In Krutch Park, this statue seems to implore us to pose alongside of her:
I give it my all:
Later, we have lunch at the Downtown Grill & Brewery, with Instapundit and Dr. Helen, and another pose is implored:
AND: Don't miss "Instapundit: matchmaker."

very cute!!
The story of Krutch Park is interesting.
Charles Krutch had retired from TVA. His wife died many years before him.
By the time his wife had died in 1960, he was the only member of his family in Knoxville. He spent the last 20 years of his life gardening and speculating on some stock. He died in 1981 at the age of 94. He surprised the City by leaving about $1.3 million in his will for an urban park. Krutch stipulated that it be, “a quiet retreat with trees, shrubs, flowers, and other planting for the pleasure and health of the public.”
This is too adorable.
Neo-con lawprof conspiracy exposed!
Holy crap! Two of my favorite Intertubes people ever in the same picture. Please get Kaus, the Powerline guys and James L. in there next time. Maybe even Steyn and Ezra Levant if you can swing it. Very cool picture.
Mmm...is instapundit pushing his breast out in the photo?
Panache, Althouse haz it.
UWS guy said...
"Mmm...is instapundit pushing his breast out in the photo?"
If Reynolds had man-boobs, which he doesn't, yes, it would be classic Althousian "breast-pushing" in a photo.
Perhaps he wishes he had some yaboos...
---------------
Nice Althouse, Instapundit and their mates had a get together. Both blogs are complimentary, the two have mutual law/other interests...and I am sure that poet Meade and Dr. Helen bring their own wit and charm to any get together.
Who is the sculptor of the work in the first photo?
Not sure NKVD, but his girlfriend sure was a big gal.
Where are the pigeons.
Dr. Helen can change gays to straight through therapy.
She is a miracle worker.
Caption contest: (1)A small step for Ann, and a giant leap for the Althouse Blog. (2) The northern outpost lawblog secretly meets with the southern outpost lawblog proving that the Internetiati are a conspiracy to rule the BlogWorld.(3)Hooter's Girl and friends meet at UT.
All that wit and talent in one place!
Chicks can be sculptors, too.
Camille Claudel was remarkable.
This work seems derivative of the work of Gaston Lachaise, who's muse was certainly plus size. But this is a more recent work, I would guess.
Just give a yell before Ann gets back. I got to get out of here before she sees the mess I made of her blog. It's not all me, others were messy too.
Charles Krutch's contribution is a wonderful one. It's a great way to disperse your left over money. Spreads it out over people, place and time. I like that.
I bet you guys had fun
Is Knoxville fabulous?
Is Knoxville the ex-gay capitol of the world?

::points at bagoh20::
It wasn't me....It was him...I swear!
So she can change straights to gays too, right? Consider the possibilities, Titus.
OK, I just looked up Knoxville.
Interesting, it is about the same population as Madison and the University of Tennessee is there-go Vols.
I looked up their gay scene...very, very, sad...on second thought I think if I was a gay living in Knoxville I might seek Dr. Helen's services also.
And another artist dumps a ton of ugly angst on an accommodating burg.
Women's basketball Hall of Fame-many dykes.
Median income: $27,000.
What the hell can someone do with $27,000/annually. That is just wrong and totally not fabulous.
I spend $27,000 annually on clothes alone. How sad. Come on Knoxville, get with it.
Now is the time for Ricpic to say how my father is so disgusted with having me as a child. Go for it Ricpic...give it to me. I have the lube out ready to hear you go off on me...it turns me on.
What a nice picture.
Some of my favorite web people.
Come by Asheville and environs.
Insty and Dr. H can tell you what's cool downtown. (Grove Arcade, tons of galleries there and in Biltmore....) Also beautiful mountains, great places to hike, and waterfalls!
Titus - the main street running thru the downtown business district of Knoxville is Gay Street. Hence, there are businesses named Gay Jewelers, etc (or used to be when I still lived there). There also used to be a building supply company off of Gay St. named S&M Supply. Always gets a chuckle.
I hope the food at Citybrew was better than the last time I was there!
Titus,
You need to invade the town, set up a beachhead. (nothing to do with tanned lifeguards), then colonize the whole place creating a mecca of fabulosity where half of San Francisco can move and give that beautiful city back to God's chosen people - single straight men.
DADvocate, don't forget the famous Knoxvillians transvestite prostitute known as "Frankenhooker"...
Titus, don't go all downtownlad on us. One is enough.
Is the McCallie School the fancy private school in Knoxville?
Ralph...McCallie School is in Chattanooga at the Ga/Tn line. It is a good prep school built from the traditions of a Military Academy, including good discipline.
Posing with a statute?
You, a bunch of law professors!
Look what Blogs hath brought together! Let no man tear asunder.
I don't mean to be a dick but Instapundit appears to have like a 36d chest. And firm. Anybody else?
Thanks. A McCallie from one of those towns lived next door to me freshman year. Pretty sure he'd gone to the school with the same last name, but 30 years later, it's kinda fuzzy. His roommate was the only other Ralph of 1400 students.
Garage, I think it's just shadow and his arm position wrinkling his shirt oddly. Or he needs a better-fitting bra.
Remember Althouse's Reynolds vs. Sullivan poll? I left a comment on that poll and someone left the following highly-intelligent comment using a pseudonym in reply:
ShutTheFckUpLonewacko
Oddly enough, using their IP address it looks like whoever left that was located in Knoxville. And, the IP address of a similar comment from before was from the University of Tennessee.
Now, I'm not about to accuse Reynolds of leaving either nastygram. For instance, it could have been one of his students trying to make him look bad or something like that.
Not the first thing noticed in the group photo, but Reynolds does have extra large lungs. I wonder if he was a cross-country runner in his youth.
The posing AA would make a good decor photo in several places inside and outside the Biltmore House in Asheville.
Now, I'm not about to accuse Reynolds of leaving either nastygram. For instance, it could have been one of his students trying to make him look bad or something like that.
Nah, go ahead. It'll be a hoot.
ShutTheFckUpLonewacko
Heh. Indeed.
TD, surely you never expected Althouse to make it to the beach? She's MUCH too white for that kind of romp.
Besides, she's in love with a guy who likes gardens and tills the soil. I feel a compromise coming on. ;)
Her pictures of the coffee houses surrounding the Biltmore estate are going to WOW us.
Nice photo of lovely people.
When you are with GR in person, are you allowed to comment? Or has he turned the comments off and gone all Dinner With Andrae?
"So she can change straights to gays too, right? Consider the possibilities, Titus."
David, Titus is a practical man. When faced with the full potential of magical thinking, he goes with the odds.
Why else would a gay man regularly seek out opportunities to squeeze female breasts?
He will enter his "new and improved" world as an experienced second base man.
A very cute picture of the four of you!
As for the statue... Professor Althouse, you simply cannot emulate that in dry clothes.
Nice pictures. Althouse and Meade look particularly good together.
Now, Lonewhacko, as an experienced troll-tracer, I'd be very interested in how you got the IP of a particular comment. The only thing Blogger gives you directly is the profile of the commenter. That does NOT include the IP. If you're looking at the Sitemeter, it is very difficult to associate a unique visitor with a specific comment.
On a busy thread, many people leave comments. The times indicated on Sitemeter can be as much as a half hour different than the actual times of the events with which they seem to be associated, owing to sequencing and time-out issues.
On a sparsely-attended thread with few comments, you might be able to detect the sequence correctly, and thus infer the IP, but even this is not certain. A commenter can use a proxy or any number of IP-blocking methods, and leave no trace, while another may comment any time within approximately 30 minutes, and seem, from the sequence of commments, to be the one you're interested in.
I have occasionally used two computers with different browsers to monitor the Sitementer and comments on a given thread. Others have mentioned even more elaborate methods to track the origins and identities of trolls. It's an interesting bit of detective work, but I know for a fact it can lead you to wrong conclusions. And, in the end, it's really not worth the effort.
So, if you have a method of accurately tracing commenters' IP's, please let us know what it is. I'm sure there are many people who would be dying to know.
Not the first thing noticed in the group photo, but Reynolds does have extra large lungs. I wonder if he was a cross-country runner in his youth.
He's Secretariat, reincarnated as a blogger.
Artist is Leonda Finke
Other Images
Due to the artful crop, I can't see how many of you are wearing shorts.
Gosh, that Meade is cute.
I see the expressionist in her work, don't see the influence of Chiam Gross. Since this is a modelled work, and Mr. Gross was primarily a carver, that stands to reason. The surface is not related to reductive sculpture at all.
The stride of that particular piece seems to relate to Rodin's St. John The Baptist Preaching, although the stance is reversed. The tilt of the head seems related to the work of Kathe Kollwitz.
Thanks for posting Ms. Finke's name - I told you chicks can sculpt!
And I think Glenn is Instadrunk, as usual. He extols the virtue of alcohol and appears to be drunk in every picture I see of him. Cheers, you sloshy wino government droid.
Titus, you are mistaken.
DTL lies about this regularly, you my friend, are just mistaken.
I was there for the post and commented in the thread. Let me set you straight. In a manner of speaking.
Dr. Helen was complaining about the APA trying to limit the kind of therapy that psychologists may use. There is an approach to therapy, I forget the name as I do not believe it works or use it, that purports to help people change their sexual orientation.
Dr. Helen clearly stated that she did not believe in it either, which makes perfect sense. She is an avowed libertarian. But she bristled, and rightly so, that patients could not choose what they want to work on in therapy.
I have had, and she has too, miserable people who want to no longer be gay. They are tired of the homophobia and shame. I tell them that I do not know how to help them not be gay, but that we can discuss the shame and perhaps reduce that. I also refer them to some of my gay colleagues that have experience in that area and may be more helpful to them.
I bet Dr. Helen does the same.
The point is that we as psychologists and the APA as a bureacratic organization have no damn business telling people how they should live. If people do not want to be straight or gay or have an attraction to children that is their business, not ours.
And certainly NOT some organization that gave their president an award after she slept with a patient.
For the record, as a Christian, I accept homosexual sex as sin because it says so in my Scripture. It also says that I sin when I look at a woman with lust in my heart. The point as I read it is that all of us are sinners and with no hope accept for God's loving mercy and forgiveness. Thank God.
But Dr. Helen does not make gay folks straight. She is not interested in that. She is interested in people making their own choices and living their own lives without interference.
I would think you would appreciate that.
I know that I do.
Trey
Gross.
The Macho Response
No matter how you put it, feng, taking her to a motel was low class.
accept is not except. I know that. Really I do. I can accept it, except I cannot spell it.
Trey
If people do not want to be straight or gay or have an attraction to children that is their business, not ours.
I pity the poor schmuck who goes to you seeking help.
There is an approach to therapy, I forget the name as I do not believe it works or use it, that purports to help people change their sexual orientation.
Has anyone tried surgery? They've identified a small part of the brain that's different in gays and straights, so so maybe a transplant from a straight who died of heart failure or something would work. Worth a try--a chance to cut is a chance to cure.
ZPS wrote: "I pity the poor schmuck who goes to you seeking help."
Why?
Because I am a Christian?
The grandfather of the little girl I just saw who was sexually abused by her stepfather and whose mother told her it was her fault was very happy to have his little girl seeing me. He cried a bit.
Why do you pity my patients? They get better.
Trey

Are you sorry for being a self-righteous, judgmental bastard?
P.S. Was that softball on purpose?
Did you take that pic just to drive Sully crazy? Or maybe I should say "crazier." :-)
Self righteous? How do you get that?
Judgmental, how do you get that?
The point of the post and Dr. Helen's initial post on the subject was that we as psychologist's do not have the right or authority to tell people what they should want or need.
You are clearly projecting your own issues on to me. I have never helped someone not be gay. I do not think it can be done. That is what I told the two people who have come to me asking for help with that in 18 years. Do you think I should have tried to "fix" them? I don't. We just disagree on that.
Where is the self-righteousness or judgmental attitude?
Or, is it that your blood is boiling that I follow the creed of my Scripture which states that sex outside of traditional marriage is sinful? Feel free to disagree, I did not write that. But how is your calling me names my being judgemental and a bastard? That is quite a trick!
You are confused if you see that my believing my scripture that all people are sinners is judgmental or self righteous. See, in the post I admitted to being a sinner. That makes it very difficult for me to be self-righteous.
But then, as a conservative, I support people who disagree with me. While I do not believe it is smart to want to change from being gay, or even possible, I have no desire to make someone think otherwise.
You do.
Now who was it you said was judgmental?
You and ZPS who are being rude because someone disagrees with you? That is open minded? Hardly. And to be more specific, you could not even read the post correctly. When you read that I follow a religion that holds sex outside of traditional marriage a sin you lost it. Sorry, but you can work on that with a mature gay therapist. I know they could help you grow more tolerant and less judgmental.
Trey
I don't mean to be a dick but...
... actually I do, so here's my dick-ly comment...
OMG-I agree with NKVD. Reynolds does sometimes look a little tipsy in his pictures.
Is Dr. Helen's hair thinning?
I understand what you are saying Trey.
I know Knoxville is not Nashville, and they're 180 miles apart, but if you pass through Nashville on this trip (and haven't already), then you should be sure to stop by and visit the century-old full-size replica of Athens' Parthenon — but intact, not a ruin — that the city has there. Seeing the 41 ft. tall statue of Athena within alone is worth the visit. (It's probably by far the largest pagan temple in America, I expect.)
The statue looks like "Wrath" by Giotto:

TM,
WTF?
Your blather about projection and so on make me think of a psych 101 student run amok.
I've always (w/o a shred of actual knowledge, and a little bit tongue in cheek) disparaged psychologists as losers who couldn't make it through medical school to become psychiatrists. But, after reading your comments I'm thinking it may be time to remove the proverbial tongue.
Maybe you're at the lower end of the psychologist brain power spectrum. Hopefully your colleagues can provide insight beyond the boilerplate psych 101 blather you specialize in. But, I doubt it, y'all really are losers who couldn't make it through medical school. Sheesh.
BTW, did it ever occur to you that ZPS was not impressed w/ your conflation of gay folks and child predators? Duh. Further, do you think it's possible that I may have been playing off of (i.e. not being completely earnest regarding) another recent Althouse post in which you expressed sort-of contrition? What did the sticker in that post say?
Dumb is as dumb does.
Trey didn't deserve that.
Meade is your fiancee?
Sorry, I'm the Compulsive Copyeditor.
No, he didn't.
Sometimes a miserable person comes along and sucks you into conversation, and you belatedly discover that all he wants is to inflict his hurt on you. At that point you feel sorry for him, and shut up, in that order.
The vast majority of child predators are breeders. I also referred to straight people in the sentence that caused you such umbrage. Just because words are close to each other, does not mean that they are being conflated. I included child molesters as an extreme example to make a point about not telling people what to do as their therapist, not to insinuate that child molesters were in any way similar to gay people. If I wished to say such a stupid and false thing, I would just say it out right.
Sorry you missed the point. There was no insult in the post for anyone.
The problem is you are confusing me with a legalist. That is why you thought I was being self righteous. I am not a legalist who counts on "good" behavior to earn God's favor. The people who do, like that sorry excuse Fred Phelps, attempt to make themselves feel good by making false comparisons. Gay folks are the favorite false comparison. I trust in God's grace, His undeserved favor.
Trusting in grace is different from taking a licentious position, from saying that God accepts all behavior. That is contrary to Scripture. Many Christians will not speak of sin because they get jumped and called names and insulted when they do. As you can see. 8)
My point is that there is no moral or spiritual difference between gay and straight people when it comes to sin. None. We are both sinners. Heaven is full of sexual sinners, since we are all sexual sinners. I have no moral leg to stand upon in order to condemn any person, gay or straight. And I do not, and have not. Read my posts, go back for years. I don't do that.
Now I do hate sexual predators. But that has nothing to do with being straight or gay. I know that, I work with their victims.
Capiche?
And why insult someone you disagree with? It is unseemly to go off on someone while you accuse them of being intolerant. It destroys your point.
And thanks Titus, I am glad you understood the point.
I bet I will have more to respond to tomorrow. Till then.
Trey
Sorry, I missed the point you made about contrition in my earlier post. I appologized for being rude to Jeremey and DTL. I never made homophobic remarks about either. I don't do that. In fact, I always found it amusing when DTL would call me "Twink" as I am a hairy fat guy, much more bear like than twinkish. But it is sad that a gay guy would try to insult me by calling me gay.
And my saying something that you find offensive or disagree with is quite different from my being rude or mean.
You misunderstood. That is different.
Trey
The vast majority of child predators are breeders.
Aren't the vast majority of people breeders?
Isnt it strange that this thread about Ann's visit to Knoxville has been hijacked by a couple of GLBT folks who are attacking Trey, becasue Trey dared to express his beliefs.
Shame on you GLBT folks. I thought y'all were the "better" and "more evolved" and "more civilized" than us lowly breeders.
Please sir, be advised that these are the new facts of life at Chez Althouse.
