Sorry Joy, but I like species tulips better than cultivated ones.
Maybe it's because they're wildflowers and have garish color combinations and shapes, but they always seem somehow more exotic to me. Or maybe it's because the species are hardier than the cultivated ones. They don't need me and I appreciate that.
Paulie: [about Adrian] She's pushing thirty freaking years old, and if she don't wise up, she's gonna die an old maid. Rocky: I'm thirty myself! (Rocky,1976)
Both are lovely, though I prefer taller tulips to the shrimps.
Alas, I'm in a part of the US where, if I don't dedicate part of my refrigerator to bulbs for a few months each winter, tulips are other people's flowers.
Please, if you might all forgive the humble ravings of an excitable, and oftentimes impertinent (yet oddly decrepit) young man, Peter Palladas is one of the all-time GREAT Althouse commenters, from the olden times.
I beg of you all, pay heed, that he might remain.
(Now if we can get Original George back I’ll be batting .375. And where I come from --the dirtiest part of South Jersey -- that ain’t bad!)
Peter, did you see Chris Muir's centerfold of Palin on Day by Day today?
Big fan of the species tulips, myself. I have the ones in this pic and was out deadheading them in the rain this afternoon. The hybrids just look fake to me - too contrived, too perfect. Not to say I don't have them, but still....
In a place where marijuana legalization is batted about, where deaths are noted with youtube remembrances of days gone by, where music is discussed to the umpteenth degree and where i feel like i am being ignored by a bunch of hippies turned republicans 10-15 years older than me, I just cannot believe that pete seegers 90th birthday was not mentioned here.
at least i found a fitting photographic tribute in a cloud gate, if you have ever checked my blog, ann.
My father purchased my grandparents farm when they moved into the "city"=that city being Lodi.
The farm has a spring and a river that passes behind it.
During this time of the year, or maybe it's too late, there are wood lillys or trilliums and jack in the pulplits. And another flower some kind of shooting star or something. They are so beautiful.
Peter, I’m from Camden County, more or less. Please forgive me but I don’t want to get any more specific than that. I’ve been on the lam ever since that guy saw me naked with Christie Todd Whitman’s horse.
Thank you for that, Peter. Very sad and exactly the way I remember it. There is no reason to think that things in Camden are going to get any better anytime soon.
IIRC, Camden was giving away houses for one dollar with tax abatement but the plan bombed because purchasers were required to live in them for one year. That requirement was a deal-breaker. I guess being within walking distance of the new aquarium wasn’t all that wonderful an enticement. Go figure.

She eats tulips, doesn't she.

Althouse / Palin - still can't decide. OK, I'll take both. Forget the tulips. Bring them if you must. Rose petals preferred.
Just add sliced pears, oranges, onion, and crumbled blue cheese. Serve with a steak and baked potato. At last an end use for Tulips.

Species tulips are great. Beside the fact that many naturalize, the array of colors sizes and textures are fantastic.

Bissage, you're from South Jersey?
I grew up in Woodbury. Probably not what you'd consider the dirtiest part of the 51st state.

Bissage, I understand. My condolences to the horse, by the way.
Camden County does include its share of gritty locales. As for Camden itself, have you seen this photo project about paired houses?
Thank you for that, Peter. Very sad and exactly the way I remember it. There is no reason to think that things in Camden are going to get any better anytime soon.
