"Why couldn't President Obama have put on more of a show for his British guests?"

"He looked like he simply couldn't be bothered."

ADDED: Telegraph blogger James Delingpole writes:
My favourite theory so far ... was that it was a move calculated to please his Lady Macbeth. At the moment in Britain, we're still in the "Doesn't she look fabulous in a designer frock" stage of understanding of Michelle Obama. Gradually, though, we'll begin to realise that she is every bit the terrifying executive's wife that Hillary Clinton was. Or, shudder, Cherie Blair.

We may just LURVE Michelle's fashion sense. But Michelle doesn't reciprocate our affection, one bit. Her broad-brush view of history associates Brits with the wicked white global hegemony responsible for the slave trade....

Now, there's some loose talk. There's no reason to blame Michelle. This is pure racial fantasizing. Quite bizarre. But Obama should be setting off positive fantasies around the world. That's what he said he'd do. That's what those of us who voted for him believed he would do. Come on! Where's the magic?

47 days ago we weren't looking at this.

Pat Buchannan in RCP:

"Where the U.S. government usually consumes 21 percent of gross domestic product, this Obama budget spends 28 percent in 2009 and runs a deficit of $1.75 trillion, or 12.7 percent of GDP. That is four times the largest deficit of George W. Bush and twice as large a share of the economy as any deficit run since World War II."

Plus we have his war on the capitalist wealth creators, an increase in taxes and the massive cost to EVERYONE with this cap and madness at the worst possible time.

And let's not forget his dissing of our allies, sucking up to our enemies and being played for a fool by the Russians and Iran.

And how about his unprecedented botching of the task of assembling a cabinet?

I mean it just goes on and on.

He is the worst...president...EVER. And he's accomplished that in 47 days.

Michael and Beth -- here's one view. I think this guy understands it a bit better than you. And for sure cares more.

With the economic situation the way it is, Barack "I won!" Obama can't focus and get something settled there for he good of America.

Because it is becoming clearer day by day that for some reason it is payback time, and busness is on the s**t end of the stick for him.

The guy has never worked for a living. He has no history of being wise financially and investing, planning for the future, except to be president of the United States (and that's his gravy train.)

And it shows. He's been a student, a "community organizer" and a lawyer. His associations have consisted mainly of people who are anti-free market, anti- business and anti-American.

He lives in some fantasy utopia that sounds like a very very very bad place (and which to this day does not exist successfully.)

Idea: Raul and Fidel are pretty close to checking out. He wouldn't have to work so hard. The system is already in pace there. Michael Moore says their health care is FABULOUS. I guess because the rest of their industry sucks in comparison. The climate is nicer than DC (no snow to hypocritate about). Yup. Cuba needs Barack. Please. Take him.

Geroge, the people responsible for impeachment have turned out to be just as crooked, if not more so, than the man they would impeach (not that this is any real surprise except in how blatant it has become.)

It is a matter of mind set. For all his life and Michelle's life they have been trying to take it from "the man" trying to get money from "big brother" and to distribute it to their dependants. That is what community organizing is all about. Take money or extort money from those who have it and redistribute the wealth.

Unfortunately.....now Obama is the man. Is Big Brother, in more ways than we can imagine. There is no more "man" to get the money from, so now he is going to come after all of us for his dreams of equalizing wealth.

ANYTHING to denigrate our President.

If I am not mistaken, Bush was denigrated from the very first day in office until the very last day in office. Why should the One be treated differently? Because he is what some kind of messiah?

Would we not be renegers if we were niggardly with our denigration?

Garage,

Not to go back in time but when Bush was inaugurated and the economy tanked and we had a deficit when he had not changed any spending or financial policies at all, had not even finished naming his cabinet, and the Democrats were talking about the Bush Deficit. Pot, meet Kettle. And the difference is that this little POS we have as pres HAS changed the spending and financial policies and the more he changes them the worse it gets. What does it take to wake you idiots who voted for this POS up anyhow!

--Even in the 1940's when Churchill was recognized as the symbol of a less-than-useless British presence in WW2,--

Actually the Brits more than carried their weight in WW2. It was after they went socialist that they became a joke - culminating by the Iranians taking their sailors hostage - even the females. And now the Jihadi's are in their midst beating up priests.

See the future.

Yes, he won the election, 52% of the voters went for him. But that does NOT give him the right to destroy 230 years of American free enterprise and turn this nation of free men into some $%^^$##@% socialist dependency --- and destroy the lives of hundreds of millions of people in the process.

---Carter widely gets the blame, even though it wasn't until it bottomed out, over a year into Reagan's first term---

Sorry, another lefty rewrite of history. Rampant inflation was Carter's game. The numbers you cite are correct. Reagan realized the way to kill inflation was to raise interest rates and yes, cause a recession. It hurt. But it beat the (*#* out of Carter's stagflation. - And you knew that the Gipper knew what he was doing.

I'd call him an intellectual lightweight, but that would be an insult to intellectual lightweights.

It just gets more bizarre all the time.

Sure we need some health care reform but to start another big, big project while the financial world is still crumbling around us shows, to me, his complete lack of executive or managerial experience.

No priorities or focus -- just jump on another agenda item while the political capital is still in the green.

The snubbing of Gordon Brown is just another example of a nascent Bizzaro World growing on the Potomac.

When our new president sent back the bust of W. Churchill, the Brits sent over a paper-mache bust of N. Chamberlain, thinking that might be more appropriate for President Obama's office.

That new bust was accompanied by a note that said: "Do enjoy. BTW, our hotline phone number has been changed."

Can I say, without being assumed racist, that the governing style of this President is, well, ghetto?

It's not even like a busy Barack or Michele had to devote thought or effort to go shopping. There are world-class protocol people in the White House, and no doubt State Department, who would have leapt at the chance to turn up les cadeaux justes:

- cufflinks made out of manacles from the Amistad

- an autographed volume of Theodore Roosevelt's The Naval War of 1812

- or for the kids, copies of Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians (original title, Ten Little Niggers, I shit thee not!)

- some shrapnel from a friendly fire incident in Iraq

- orthodontic supplies for those famous English teeth

never mind something warming, friendly, nice - he could have used the power of the office of POTUS to insult them PROPERLY if that was his intent.

This was just, speaking of Fat Albert, "school in summer" -

no class!

Althouse, I think you owe us all an apology. Or at least a "Happy Now?" tag - more elegant than "Oh Shit" - for all the posts like this we can see in your future.

(I would tell you the proper form for your personal apology to me, but you don't discuss your sex life on the board, so I'll just hit you on Facebook. Curiously, though, you haven't friended me yet...LOL)

I never thought of Michelle at all, but when I read of Obama's rude dismissive behavior toward the British PM, I did think maybe there was some anti-British grudge there, possibly having to do with Britain's domination of Kenya and other countries in Africa for so long. After all, Obama is half Kenyan.

BJM said...

Whilst perusing the Obama gift kerfuffle in Brit papers today I stumbled upon a fact I did not know.

"The Prime Minister's close friends have revealed that he can only see extremely large print and has needed guidance at public events."

While that's very unfortunate for Mr. Brown, it's simultaneously hilarious and appalling. Hell, the Obamacons did more research into Joe the Plumber than the Prime Minister of the UK.

I expected Mr. & Mrs. Urbane-Cool to have graciousness down pat, unlike their cowboy and hillbilly predecessors.

What next? Sending Ahmadinejad a nice ham, oh, that's right they have.
