Police spokeswoman Diane Richard ... said Todd said on Friday she wasn't sure if it was a bumper sticker on her car or a campaign button on her jacket that angered the attacker. Richard said Todd added new details to the attack, saying at one point she lost consciousness.I'm glad this got cleared up so quickly, and I hope people learn a few lessons from this. As I said here and here, it always looked fake to me.
"She also indicated she was sexually assaulted as well. She indicated that when he had her on the ground he put his hand up her blouse and started fondling her. But other than that, she says she doesn't remember anything else. So we're adding a sexual assault to this as well," Richard said.
Police said they gave a polygraph test to Todd, but they didn't release the results.
AND: Making the fake assailant black and then throwing in the sexual assault makes thing truly vile.

"How confident are you that I can't provide such a link?"
Already answered: confident. And growing more so, because - as in the Berg case - if you weren't bluffing you'd have shown your cards. You're either bluffing or playing for time.

"As a Democrat, my intentions are..."
Let me cut to the chase - your intentions are to make us more like Europe - more government, more regulation for anything you deign to leave outside of direct government control, more taxes, less freedom, less burdensome "Constitution" stuff like "limited government" or "federalism." In the revolutionary war, people like you were called "loyalists." As revenant said, if you want to do all that kooky crap with your own money, fine. If you want to take voluntary donations, fine - go build a compound somewhere. But you want to use the coercive force of the state to require people to help you build your Franco-Krypton hybrid, and that is without any doubt a bad intention that ought to be met with massive resistance.
Eli, I must say with all due respect. You are my favorite weenie.
And I don't mean that in a Titusy sort of way.
You should really be in the Smithsonian or something. Somewhere between the Spirit of St. Louis and Archie Bunkers arm chair.
You are an American artifact. God bless you man.

"I wholly applaud your using the courts to challenge anything that you see in any law that you believe is unconstitutional."
I didn't say I was going to. That's another difference between liberals and conservatives: I don't think that I get to go into court and have a law struck down just because I don't like it or in my opinion it's not Constitutional. You need someone who actually has standing to challenge it, and if that person doesn't exist, you're stuck slugging it out in the political arena.
"The purpose of the courts IS to allow ordinarly citizens a way to challenge the system"
No, the purpose of the courts is to resolve disputes between litigants who have actual stakes in the outcome. The federal courts only have the power of judicial review to the extent that they have to i the exercise of the foregoing power.
Simon,
OK, you've got one wrong:
This refers to the information I've specifically mentioned. But, there's a lot of other supporting stuff, I haven't mentioned, currently branching from the main talkingpointsmemo.com site.
It's despicable that the McCain camp was pushing this story to the media. Can you understand why they would hype this phony story to score political points? I can't, can you?
But, don't feel bad because you can still try to be one for two. Take a shot at my first question.
Don't give up!!!!
P.S.
Maybe I should be one of those modern graders. Everybody wins even if you can't answer any questions correctly. You're a winnner!!!!!!! (even when you lose.)
P.P.S.
Don't give the answer to Revenant, he's still working on his exam.
This refers to the information I've specifically mentioned.
Yes, 1jpb, we know that the leftie blogs are repeating the rumor. That's where you heard it in the first place. Intelligent people realize that "evidence" is not the plural of "allegation".
I'm surprised that nobody has cited the Obama-Biden campaign's initial response:
This is a horrendous act of violence. Our thoughts and prayers are with the young woman for her to make a speedy recovery, and we hope that the person who perpetrated this crime is swiftly apprehended and brought to justice.
Obviously, they are implicit in the hoax, and I am disappointed that the usual gang of Althouse commenters haven't brought this to the fore.
1jpb, I apologize for the imprecision in my earlier comment. What I should have said is that I'm confident that you can't link to a credible source. Oh course you could link to the John Birch Society, TPM, Lyndon Larouche, HuffPo os somewhat similar, but I thought that credible sources was taken as a given.
