The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child. How bizarre! Is this just a coincidence or is this fact actually related to the rumors that went wild over the weekend, saying that Sarah Palin's new baby, Trig, was not her baby at all but her grandson?
Bristol Palin, one of Alaska Gov. Palin's five children with her husband, Todd, is about five months pregnant and is going to keep the child and marry the father, the Palins said in a statement released by the campaign of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.
Bristol Palin made the decision on her own to keep the baby, McCain aides said.
"We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us," the Palins' statement said.
"Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support," the Palins said.
The Palins asked the news media to respect the young couple's privacy.
"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media, respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates," the statement concluded.
Senior McCain campaign officials said McCain knew of the daughter's pregnancy when he selected Palin last week as his vice presidential running mate, deciding that it did not disqualify the 44-year-old governor in any way.

I think the way to support a child through a pregnancy is to be there for them, not to embark on a national campaign -- sure, it's "only" 2 months -- that will shine the spotlight on the child. Anyway, that would be my reaction as a parent.Oh, that looks like a meme. Sarah Palin must stay home with her special needs baby. Sarah Palin must stay home with her about-to-be-married, pregnant daughter. Ladies: Put your career on hold until everything in your family stops happening. I know, MM is a man and he's saying he'd stay home too, but would he? Would a man forgo his career to be there for a family member who is experiencing an important life transition?
Remember when John Edwards decided to go on with his campaign after his wife got a diagnosis of inoperable cancer? Now, I think Elizabeth Edwards was probably excited about the campaign and wanted to go on with it. In that light, why are you assuming that Bristol Palin isn't excited about her mother's campaign? Unlike Elizabeth Edwards, Bristol is not facing her last days. She's just starting out -- all caught up in life. Presumably, she's intense and positive about her pro-life beliefs, her love for the baby's father, her impending wedding, and the new baby on the way.
I imagine her eager to run around with the campaign, spreading the pro-life message to young people. Why should you think she would prefer to mope around the house, feeling ashamed, absorbing maternal comforting? On the campaign trail, she will be a loved and praised pro-life heroine, and she -- and her mother -- are likely to convert others to the pro-life side, with their glamorous and very positive image. Pro-choicers beware.
ADDED: In the comments Randy quotes my "Would a man forgo his career to be there for a family member who is experiencing an important life transition?" and says:
Ann, Joe Biden talks about facing that question when his wife and daughter were killed, and his sons injured, in that car accident. I can't recall anyone ever criticizing him for making the decision to remain in the US Senate and commute from Delaware to DC.

Are you delusional or something? It got several huge posts with 1000+ comments on it and dozens of smaller ones. At least one of the huge posts made it to the rec list before being taken off and then got pushed onto digg with huge ratings with a link to Daily Kos. It got put on Drudge with a link to Daily Kos. Sulivan picked it up from Daily Kos. Obscure!?
Good lord, I've never seen such blatant historical revisionism of something that happened just hours ago.
Couple thoughts 500 comments in --
Re the blog responses -- over on Obsidian Wings the commenters are heavy at condemning Sarah Palin's choices. Just about all of them (the choices and the commenters on hilzoy's post that it was hands off the daughter). Just FYI.
There are several claims out there (maybe they are in the comments here too... haven't read them all). One is that the Palins/ McCain were trying to keep a "secret." (? The engagement ring was a clue, no?) There seemed to be a general (not absolute) ignorance or dismissal of the truly vile and bizarre accusations against Sarah Palin and her daughter made in the first 60 hours of SP's selection. Maybe the Palins had in mind to offer that information at a time they deemed more appropriate.
Why do some here use the term; "infanticide baby killers" when describing women who make a choice, based on any number of circumstances?
Would you say something like that to a friend or relative who had an abortion?
Look, all I know is Pat Buchanan wasn't just saying "she seemed like a fan of mine", he was saying THIS WEEKEND on MSNBC that he remembers her fondly as an enthusiastic brigadier wielding a pitch fork for his movement. He was stating this as a fact he had a clear memory of. If he's a complete and total liar, okay, we'll find out.
Cass asserts that Obama released his medical records, but reveals that his (her?) reading comprehension is impaired:
The 276-word summary was written by Dr. David L. Scheiner, the Chicago doctor who has been Obama's personal physician since March, 1987. (emphasis added)
A 276-word summary is just that, a summary. "Medical records" are, you know, actual medical records. Try again.
My recollection, Mc, is that Althouse's first post on this was highlighting a Kos diary by someone named Inky99. The idea that an Inky99 diary represents the entirety of the DailyKos community or the Democratic Party is just absurd. Like I said, bloggers playing these games is so 3-years-ago.
Yet, the evidence produced that I posted suggests otherwise. Including his own campaign's press releases, including the lack of any donations by Palin to his campaign, including her being announced as part of the Forbes campaign, including the statement from the McCain/Palin campaign, and including the recollection of Bay Buchanan, who ran Pat's campaigns and would know just as well as he would.
Yet you keep pushing the other. Maybe you are a Pat Buchanan believer. You certainly seem to take his opinion and statements as the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, and we all are completely convinced that is just because your independent mind tells you so!
"Like I said, bloggers playing these games is so 3-years-ago."
Games like being a Moby?
Yes, so 3-years-ago.
LO: Ben Smith's reporting on the topic.
Give it up, will you? She was never a Buchananite.

Maybe if you repeat that claim often enough it'll become true.
If he's a total liar, the worst yo can say about me is that I was lied to by Pat Buchanan
The worst we can say about you is that you're knowingly helping Pat Buchanan spread lies.
*Everybody* gets lied to by Pat Buchanan, after all. The man earns his living misinforming the public.
Why do some here use the term; "infanticide baby killers" when describing women who make a choice, based on any number of circumstances?
Because they're making the choice to kill a baby.
"How is this different?"
Hmm. How about a mainstream (allegedly) figure like Andy Sullivan pushing it. Got examples of that?
Hmm. How about the foremost liberal blog highlighting it as a 'recommended diary' and then having posts about it on the front page? Got examples of that, but on the other side of the aisle?
Hmm. How about middle of the road blogs like this one being set upon like a picnic sandwich by ants with rabid partisans pushing it and claiming it is valid? Got examples of that, but from the other side?
Hmm. How about mainstream media stories debunking the meme. We had those for the Muslim thingy. Got examples of that, but from the other side? (Actually, you may succeed with this one).
But off the top of my head, those are some of the ways that it is different. Oh, and that the people who were crying foul about the Muslim thing are the ones pushing this one, so we can add in hypocrisy.
Anything else we can help you with?
"Maybe if you repeat that claim often enough it'll become true."
I gave AlphaLiberal the full directions before. He needs the ruby slippers, to close his eyes, click his heels, THEN repeat it over and over. But he also has to video it, upload it to YouTube, and share the URL.
Otherwise, it won't become true.
joan, speaking of only seeing a "summary," explain how this is more revealing:
Chicago Sun Times, May 29, 2008
"The McCain campaign last week allowed a select group of reporters to study McCain's more complex medical history."
No "release."

"Yeah we know" if the Democrats / Socialists had any cojones, they'd change the official name of their party to "Socialists of America" or perhaps to "Marxist /Leninist Party of America!" But, then, whatever they have is shrunken up inside their miserable bodies.
It must be miserable to be them.
If Pat Buchanan is a total liar he should be required by MSNBC to issue a retraction and then be disciplined.
I'm sure we'll find out more about who this Sarah Palin character is in the weeks ahead. It's just so disturbing that McCain didn't feel the need to vet someone he wants us to accept as potentially the Leader of the Free World.
You could Google Obama; muslim, heroin, cocaine, terrorist, etc. and get 1,000's upon 1,000's of hits and sites and blogs that throw out anything they can type. How is this different?
Websites have tried to connect Obama with cocaine use? Gee, where'd they get THAT from?
rev,
So, whenever you encounter a friend or relative who has made the "choice" to have an abortion, even if you don't say it to their face...you think they are "infanticide baby killers??"
Be honest.
If Pat Buchanan is a total liar he should be required by MSNBC to issue a retraction and then be disciplined.
MSNBC can't go around demanding retractions of everyone who lies on their network. Keith Olbermann's their biggest draw!
"If Pat Buchanan is a total liar he should be required by MSNBC to issue a retraction and then be disciplined."
True! Get Olbermann right on it-- as we know, he only cares about journalistic integrity.
But that is not required for sentient people to be able to weigh the evidence and make a pretty easy conclusion-- unless they are trying really hard to be a partisan hack (and have given up any pretense on being an undecided independent).
"It's just so disturbing that McCain didn't feel the need to vet someone"
No, the ruby red slippers, not the pink bunny ones. Oh, and wish harder. Try again.
rev,
I like the way you pull one term out of the list.
If you want to discuss or debate, at least be mature about it.
*Do you consider cocaine use more odious than adultery?
Be careful now.
Presumably, she's intense and positive about her pro-life beliefs, her love for the baby's father, her impending wedding, and the new baby on the way.
Why would you presume that?
I imagine her eager to run around with the campaign, spreading the pro-life message to young people. Why should you think she would prefer to mope around the house, feeling ashamed, absorbing maternal comforting?
Do you imagine that it was Bristol's decision to stay out of school, falsely claiming to have mononucleosis?
On the campaign trail, she will be a loved and praised pro-life heroine, and she -- and her mother -- are likely to convert others to the pro-life side, with their glamorous and very positive image.
Wow! Unplanned teenage pregnancy is now glamorous. Amazing!
This very interesting Beldar post suggests that Bristol Palin could very well have prevailed on Sarah Palin not to enter the V.P. race if she had chosen to do so. It's circumstantial, for sure, but interesting nonetheless.
Come on, liberals. Why so serious? Why are you acting so afraid?
I'm leaving this thread. No one reads these things past 200 posts anyway, so whatever.
The bottom line is, some of you fell in love with Palin on amost nothing. She's hot, she looks hot with guns, she hunts, she's pro-life, and Dobson approved. Now you'll pretend you've been a student of Palin's career for many years and are fully confident she's ready to be Commander in Chief should anything happen to McCain.
Maybe she will prove herself in the weeks ahead, even though she's already confessed she's paid almost no attention to Iraq policy. I've long admired McCain, and I hope he didn't pick a running mate out of his ass to please the Religious Right.
I see that Tuesday monrning Good Morning America is going to examine what Americans (Republicans and Democrats) think about the Palin's 17 year old daughter's pregnancy.
Gee, thanks guys.
They didn't ask me.
I think the Palins will handle it without our dissecting it and them. They are adults (unlike the slime balls who spent the weekend tsk tsking over Sarah Palin's obstectrical history. The Palins don't need our help or opinions.
We need to get on to the issues.
Wow, up over 630.
If I can add something that I posted in the ~420 range...my comments were meant to show what I would do as a parent. I don't think the world thinks everything I do is best. (although...). One thing being a parent teaches you -- as you compare your kids to others -- is that there are many successful strategies under the Sun.
I hope you all had a great Labor Day. I helped closed down the pool, and it was the warmest day of the Summer, so very appropriate. School starts tomorrow. How can that be? Soon we will see pictures of students on Bascom Hill. In two months flurries will be flying and the election will be nearly over. I guess by then I'll have made a decision.
Back to watching hurricanes. This will be a very exciting week.
rev, I like the way you pull one term out of the list.
It was the one item whose inclusion on the list was obviously ridiculous.
Obama's not a Muslim. He hasn't done heroin, that I know of. He has terrorists among his friends, but isn't one himself. But the accusation that he did cocaine? That one's entirely true, and straight from Obama himself.
If you want to discuss or debate, at least be mature about it.
I only debate people who actually believe the argument they're presenting.

Thanks, Randy for the shout out.
You do tend to wonder when the comments go above 500 who is reading, but this still seems like a lively discussion.
No one responded to my takedown of the "she ran Sen. Stevens' 527."
To further pull the chain on this meme, note that the 527 in question was set up in 2004. Stevens' last re-election was in 2002.
A 527 is a legal designation. They're not all goon squads, anymore than all 501(c)(3) organizations are selfless and principled.
I see that Tuesday monrning Good Morning America is going to examine what Americans (Republicans and Democrats) think about the Palin's 17 year old daughter's pregnancy.
That was the intended goal of this effort: mainstream media attention raising questions about Palin's fitness as a mother and her character (the alleged conspiracy over Trig). They got what they want, and the mainstream media gets to revel in soap opera themes that draw ratings. Who it benefits remains to be seen, but I'm a big believer in the Law of Unintended Consequences.

Ummm... that sentence was in regard to the incredulous responses on another blog to the timing of the Palins' announcement about their daughter's unplanned pregnancy. Nothing else.
Alpha,
Kos owes the world an apology. he allowed this to happen on his site. If he had any humanity, a trait sorely lacking in liberals lately, he would apologize for allowing his site to turn into an insane asylum.

Oh, John! I used it! I saved it, too because the ball is just rolling on that one. Used it in emails and conversations. It draws a laugh. (BTW, my brother says "Hi!")
Palin may or may not pan out (I suspect she will prove a very good choice indeed) but all of this is highly entertaining and illuminating, at the same time depressing and revolting.
I've seen a couple of comments around town saying Stevens was her mentor, but someone usually responds that Obama himself is on record as saying Jeremiah Wright was his mentor and that usually stops that. LOL!
Rev: I admire your restraint in talking to brick walls and thick bricks.
"I'm leaving this thread. No one reads these things past 200 posts anyway, so whatever."
Finally he listened to some sense.
Sadly, he won't be able to pretend to be anything other than what he proved himself to be in the last 200 comments, which people will only see when we trudge them out at inconvenient times for Mr L.Oaf.
It's just so disturbing that McCain didn't feel the need to vet someone he wants us to accept as potentially the Leader of the Free World.
This must be an Obama campaign talking point. I see it on all the left-wing blogs. I realize the real point is to attack McCain, but let's take it on face value.
Because the bloggers are reading these things for the first time, they assume McCain didn't know them? None of the allegations against Palin are show-stoppers, especially when you get a handle on the full stories. It's far more likely McCain knows all these stories, looked into them, and is satisfied that she is still a good pick.
I know Thomas Eagleton still rankles -- it rankles me, since I was a diehard McGovern fan in '72, and was in disbelief that Eagleton would conceal vital information from his party's presidential candidate -- but McCain isn't going to pull this nomination, especially for the piddly crap being thrown at her now.
I know that one blog is claiming the Democratic party was the first to go through the printed archives of Palin's hometown paper. That's interesting, I guess, but proof of nothing.
Once more, with feeling, She was vetted.
The linked AP story above notes that McCain's people did not search the Wasilla's paper's archives because they knew that such a search would be hard to keep quiet, and they wanted to keep their interest in Palin secret. It worked! The AP article details the extent to which McCain's people investigated Palin, including a 70-question "intrusive" questionaire. Also, the first thing that Palin brought up in her interview with McCain's lawyer was the fact that Bristol is pregnant.
I continue to be impressed with how well-run McCain's campaign has been.
Thanks mcg for the link to Beldar's blog post about how the Palin family decides things. (9:49 pm)
If you haven't taken a look, it's interesting. And reinforces my belief that the Palins are capable people who make choices with thought and input, (some of which some of us will disagree). How they make those choices is instructive.
As for the Good Morning America "coverage"... I am still waiting for Barack Obama to be vetted with similar intensity by the MSM (though more intellectual honesty) than Sarah Palin has been since Friday.
If this weren't so serious I would be on the floor in stitches watching and listening to the progressive party make total idiots out of themselves as they savage a woman for being what they have been leading women to believe they could be for the past 30 years.
Weak. The fact that we're up to 636 comments ably refutes the claim that no one reads after 200. You're leaving because you kep being challenged and can't back up the lies you're posting.
I didn't post any lies, liar.
And I was just signaling I was signing off.
I have to go to bed.
What I think is kinda funny is that Simon posted a prayer the other day for a terrible storm to hit Denver during Obama's stadium speech but it turned out the storm hit the McCain convention. Not only does God not answer Simon's prayers, God seems to dislike Simon so much He wanted to stick it to Simon!
But then it gets funnier still. I noticed a few days later that Simon had actually just plagiarized that prayer for a storm in Denver thing from James Dobson. So now I have a better idea of where Simon's coming from. He's a Dobson boy.
Just like Dobson, he's also in love with Palin. But the funniest thing of all is that the right wingers are now saying maybe it's great that Gustav wiped out the first night of the GOP convention because Bush and Cheney were scheduled to speak and it's best that no one sees those two speak. Thus, with the help of Mother Nature's intervention, we finally have these guys admitting that Bush and Cheney are a joke. The same people who took the longest to realize this fact are now saying they know for sure that Sarah Palin is absolutely qualified to be Commander in Chief and Leader of the Free World. They know this because she didn't abort a down syndrome baby, she didn't want her children to know about birth control, and she looks hot with a hunting rifle.
These people have hated McCain for many years but now are cool with McCain because they think he'll kick the bucket and Palin will be our Prez. A woman they think is qualified because she looks hot with a gun, didn't abort a down syndrome baby, and didn't teach her kids about birth control. Oh, and she eats mooseburgers!
I always identified the diarist and never said it represented Daily Kos as a whole, so what is supposedly dishonest. These criticisms of me are dishonest.
A woman they think is qualified because she looks hot with a gun, didn't abort a down syndrome baby, and didn't teach her kids about birth control. Oh, and she eats mooseburgers!
LO, you keep repeating these points as if that's all Palin brings to the table. By all means, you're free to do so, but you should realize how silly you appear when you do.
It's the equivalent of saying that Obama's supporters love him because he's a gorgeous black man who gives great teleprompter speeches. Those things are true, of course, but his supporters can point to his many fine attributes and accomplishments to explain their support. Can't they?
(crickets)
Well, even if they can't, Palin supporters have a long list of things to admire about her, not least of which was how she went up against the corrupt Republicans in AK and won.
And I didn't dig those posts out of nowhere. They were already linked to the point of high visibility. That's the only reason I noticed them
Also, I just want to say that it's pretty impressive how we've managed to stay more or less on topic throughout this long thread.
Hmm, perhaps that's what's going on here. These Dobson boys know they can't win the primaries let alone a general election, but if they force McCain to pick a religious nut as VP they can hope McCain died quick and some nutter is our Prez. Nice way to avoid the vote of the people. Dobson boys.

Not only is that a lie, it's a particularly silly lie since I'm not religious. Never mind, I'm sure reality will conform itself to the requirements of your delusional reality matrix. You just keep that stream of unsubstantiated lies coming... And maybe, if you repeat them often enough they'll become true!
Most conservatives I know aren't against sex education per se, what they want is the opportunity to teach their kids about sex in the context of the family's religious beliefs.
I went to a Catholic high school. We had every bit as much sex education as any public school, but along with the birds and the bees we also got a healthy dose of "how this all fits into God's plan for you".
The lip smacking of the Kos-types over the impending self-immolation of the Republican party is palpable. It ain't gonna happen over Palin's daughter. Now, if her daughter got pregnant and mom pushed her to have an abortion - that would be a problem. What conservatives are thinking about this affair right now is "I hope if that happens in my family I will also have the strength to do the right thing."
I'm always amazed at the chest-thumping pride liberals get from knowing "how they do things in France" while at the same time attaching the most ridiculous stereotypes to their fellow Americans. Maybe instead of touring the French countryside next summer you folks ought to consider having a look at your own.

Even if you had, it wouldn't be dishonest. Kos has shown on more than on occaision that he's able and willing to delete a diary when they post something beyond the pale. Constructively, that suggests that what is posted, becomes high profile, and remains undeleted is within Kos' sense of what is in-bounds.
These criticisms of me are dishonest.
Yes, they are. But about half of what has been said here is dishonest (and the other half looks rather dubious to some ;-). Seriously, anyone with an ounce of human decency and personal integrity wouldn't dream of abusing a teen-ager much less a baby in this way to get at an adult, but these people have no scruples. And if you don't play their game, you are the enemy and your reputation must be tarnished in any way possible as well.
(For some reason, the image of Tim Robbins holding up the baby to avoid being shot in the movie Bob Roberts comes to mind. I don't know why, it isn't particularly appropriate, but there it is.)
Simon, during the DNC convention I said I was astonished by what a dud the convention was so far and maybe the Dems were just assuming Obama would hit it out of the park at hius stadium speech. You said you were hoping for a storm to hit the stadium. I didn't know at the time that you were stealing this from Dobson.
"I imagine her eager to run around with the campaign, spreading the pro-life message to young people. . . . On the campaign trail, she will be a loved and praised pro-life heroine, and she -- and her mother -- are likely to convert others to the pro-life side, with their glamorous and very positive image."
After all the work of both parties and nearly all political persuasions - left, right, and middle - attacking the problem of teenage pregnancy, to now call an unmarried pregnant 17-year-old a "heroine," "glamorous," and "very positive," is hypocritical and disgusting. Is this the image we want other teenagers to have: teenage pregnancy can be "glamorous," "very positive," and heroic? Gee, why don't we tell teenagers that getting pregnant can really be cool?
Both Obama and McCain said everyone should lay off children of politicians, and several comments in this string support that, but if you're now saying she's going to hit the campaign trail as a role model, doesn't that make her actions fair game for all the bloggers most of you are complaining about?
I think most of you know the basic truth of this - the vast majority of Americans, especially those in the middle, will not see the actions of Sarah Palin's daughter as heroic, glamorous, or very positive. They'll see them as a sad mistake, and question McCain's judgement for picking Palin as VP.
I thought you were leaving, LoafingOaf? There are no second acts on Althouse. You proved yourself to be such a complete and utter douchebag in the last 24 hours or so that I can't imagine that a few more of your droppings will really change anything. I wonder what the record for comments is here at Althouse?
I wonder if there's any way we could top 1000?
Maybe LoafingOaf should stick around.. he'll be good for at least 100 or so more.

His father was a Muslim communist bigamist who impregnated his unmarried mother at age 17- then abandoned her 2 years later. Mommy abandoned him a bit later- so his "typically white" grandparents were forced to raise him.
Obama's own autobiograph(ies!) imagine an unaccomplished 40yr old with 2 autobiographical works... state that he used both cocaine and marijuana.
Those same 'autobios' name Communist Frank Marshall Davis and Black Liberation racist Jeremiah Wright as his intellectual mentors.
Meanwhile, his wife did get a $200k/yr "promotion" the same year that Obama tossed her employer a million dollar 'earmark'.
Also, Bill Ayres was a terrorist, and was a major patron of Obama's early political career.
The "truth" hurts!
Democratic Underground is now digging through the kids friends myspace accounts for more dirt.
Dear God, if you read the conclusions these people come to things in that thread, it makes your head spin.

His father was a Muslim communist
That's an impressive feat. Genuine belief in one precludes the other, I think.
His father was a Muslim
Yes. But also one who derided all religion as "mumbo jumbo".
He was an atheist, albeit buried under Muslim rites (I'm guessing he didn't have a choice...).
Therefore, Barack Obama Senior was a "lapsed" Muslim. An apostate.
communist
A economist who, like many economists, was heavily influenced by Marxist economic doctrine.
The difference between actually being a Communist, that is being a Communist Party, and being a student of Marxist policy is wide.
Given that criteria, the person writing before you is a Communist, since almost all my history professors at Oxford were Commies.
Just in case there is any doubt, I'm not. Far from it.
I concede that this area about Obama Sr. is fuzzy though, but let's put it into perspective too.
bigamist
Yes.
who impregnated his unmarried mother at age 17- then abandoned her 2 years later.
Yes, and yes.
Mommy abandoned him a bit later- so his "typically white" grandparents were forced to raise him.
Yes, but abandonment sounds as if she told Barack she was going for a pack of smokes one day, and never came back.
She had moved to Indonesia with her Indonesian husband. She realised things weren't as rosy as she had imagined them, and that Barack would be much better off in their homeland. Her parents took over the raising of the kid, until she went back with her daughter, her marriage over.
Obama's own autobiograph(ies!) imagine an unaccomplished 40yr old with 2 autobiographical works... state that he used both cocaine and marijuana.
Yes.
Those same 'autobios' name Communist Frank Marshall Davis and Black Liberation racist Jeremiah Wright as his intellectual mentors.
Yes. Indeed, "The Audacity of Hope" is named after the Rev. Wright sermon which most marked Obama, and transformed him into a "Christian".
I use the scare quotes because Black Liberation Theology, IMO, has only a tangential religious allegiance to Christianity. It is a race-supremacist movement, with a political emphasis.
However, Obama has since left the Church he was in for 20 years, and practises freely as a Christian today.
Meanwhile, his wife did get a $200k/yr "promotion" the same year that Obama tossed her employer a million dollar 'earmark'.
Yes.
Also, Bill Ayres was a terrorist,

and was a major patron of Obama's early political career.
Yes.
The "truth" hurts!
Sometimes. Depends on the truthiness.

Loafingoaf, I remember saying tongue-in-cheek that it'd be cool for rain to fall that night. You seem to follow what Dobson says more closely than I do, so if he copied what I said and added some religious invective, kudos to him.
That's an impressive feat. Genuine belief in one precludes the other, I think.
Quite so, Randy.
But there are also Christian Communists like Diane Drufenbrock, current nun and once nominee for the Vice-Presidency of the USA by the Socialist Party of America.
Sister Diane Joyce Drufenbrock (born 7 October 1929 in Evansville, Indiana), also known as Sister Madeleine Sophie, is a Franciscan nun of the School Sisters of St. Francis and Christian socialist. She was the Vice-Presidential candidate for the Socialist Party USA in the United States presidential election, 1980, and has served as that party's National Treasurer. That campaign resulted in the Party's recognition by the Federal Elections Commission as a national political party. A mathematics graduate of Alverno College in 1953[1] and of Marquette University, she has taught mathematics at Alverno College, at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, and elsewhere around Milwaukee, Wisconsin, including at the then-new Kenosha St. Joseph High School when it opened its doors in September 1957.
(All roads lead to Wisconin...)
She self-identifies as a Marxist-Leninist.
Cheers,

Guys, for the record, Willow is not the eldest daughter, but the youngest. Bristol is older.
Before even I had stopped posting earlier, I had checked the dates, but didn't update the information here.
I also got two comments on my blog about that, so I felt a need to correct it, since this Bristol story is SO confusing as it is.
Cheers,
Victoria
This story of "didn't McCain vet this woman at all?!" is very rich.
In case you missed my blogpost of May 29th, I mentioned that Arthur Culvahouse, the lead VP committee member had been seen in Juneau and that's when the rumours of Palin-as-VP really took off (McCain had met her personally in February).
You can bet the team which he headed examined the pros and cons of this woman, and decided the pros FAR outweighed the cons.
The reason I say this is because it seems ironic that the people who like guy who had slow leaks about his association with Rezko, Ayers/Dorn, Wright seem to be astounded that people are not perfect, and squeaky clean.
Tell me, did the DEMOCRATS vet Obama at all?
Because sometimes it sure didn't look like it.
And I bet there's still a LOT more to come. Much more than "hoochi-hoops", a pregnant teen daughter, and a husband with a 24-year DWI.
What a joke.
Cheers,
Victoria
Victoria: Piper is the youngest. Willow is 14.
Re: the Christian Communist: LOL! Then again, Gorbachev was a closet Christian, wasn't he?
I am the mother of a 17 year old daughter that got pregnant & had her baby. It was hard on all of us, and not what we wanted for her. But we told her this was the consequence of having sex and if she couldn't handle it, she shouldn't have had sex in the first place. She faced up to her actions and had her baby. She needed lots of support from us, which we gave her willingly. After all, this is our daughter and our grandchild. Seven years later our daughter is married, will graduate with a degree in business management in a few months and is a great mother! And our granddaugher is a huge blessing to us all. It's not what I wanted for our daughter at the time, but it is what you make of it. We chose to believe our granddaughter a blessing no matter how she was conceived. I believe Sarah feels the same way. It is very hard to have this private information made public, but I feel the Palin family is handling it with class, and should be admired. All girls in Bristol's position need the love and support of their families as she does, and as my daughter has had. This child will be a huge blessing to their family as a result. How they deal with this situation as a family speaks volumes about their integrity. The Palin's are a real family, with real problems. I feel she will serve our country well and would be proud to call her our VP.
John Stodder wrote:
But he's not more qualified than Palin. Her CV is significantly more impressive than his.
Yes, in terms of Executive experience.
But Liberals, the Party of the blue-collar man if they're to be believed, have recently placed great store in an elite University situation.
Governor Clinton was slimed for being "only" the governor of a small Southern State, but the nation read he was a graduate of Georgetown, Oxford, and Yale Law.
Some people breathed a sigh of relief, and said, well he may be white trash, but at least he's qualified intellectually.
Since then, graduates of Harvard (Gore, Obama) and Yale (Kerry), Columbia (Obama) as well as Hillary Clinton (Wellesley, Yale) have been been the leading lights of the Democratic Party.
Joe Biden and Sarah Palin both come from modest educational backgrounds (Delaware, Idaho), but Joe Biden is 65, with long service in the Senate.
The problem arises when people see Sarah Palin as holding a journalism B.A. from the University of Idaho, and being the Governor of Alaska, a huge, but an underpopulated, almost unknown State.
That's double-dipping into obscurity for Democrats, even though she's blue-collar, and it shouldn't matter where you went to University or that you're not from an "important" State.
This is why many people feel the Democratic Party are out of touch, and elitist.
The people they should be championing, on the contrary, they dismiss, put down, and ridicule as inferior.
It's not hard to see why there has been such a sea-change in the American political landscape.
Cheers,
Victoria
Ack, yes, Randy. Sorry about that!
"Younger". :)
LOL, Juneau, Ruth Anne! Awesome.
Robin, that's a great story. As they said in the 90s, thanks for sharing. :)
Joan, awesome thanks for that link, even though it's by the hated AP.
Arthur B. Culvahouse Jr., the lawyer who conducted the review, told The Associated Press in an interview Monday that Palin underwent a "full and complete" examination before McCain chose her. Asked whether everything that came up as a possible red flag during the review already has been made public, Culvahouse said: "I think so. Yeah, I think so. Correct."
As I said.
Ann Althouse said:
I always identified the diarist and never said it represented Daily Kos as a whole, so what is supposedly dishonest. These criticisms of me are dishonest.
I agree, and I think more of us here should speak up for Ann in this instance.
It realise that a high-powered blogger DOES want traffic to his/her blog, but if that were the only reason Ann blogged, we would have a lot more of those "big tits" threads (there was one recently, or was that Pam Anderson? So easy to mistake the two).
I came home now, and saw that Larry King was on rerun. The topic du jour?
"Pregnancy, Out of Bounds or Relevant?" (something like that)
Obviously, under discussion was Bristol Willow's pregnancy.
But who will accuse Larry King Live of merely talking about this topic to push up ratings? Perhaps some will, but it's a legitimate newstory today, so sometimes it's BOTH the chicken and the egg, people.
Blogs, the media, etc. are between that rock and a hard place of being seen as cynically pushing up ratings/hits when they talk about a story.
But that's what blogs and media talk about -- news.
It's absurd to claim Ann should dismiss the story on her blog, because IMHO, I think she and other sites forced this smear campaign to be debunked FAR quirker than it would've been if we had ignored it.
Cheers,
Victoria

I use the scare quotes because Black Liberation Theology, IMO, has only a tangential religious allegiance to Christianity. It is a race-supremacist movement, with a political emphasis.
Black Liberation Theology was a natural response to the race-supremacist "Christianity" of Southern Protestants. The Southern Baptists in particular supported slavery and deemed it to be moral. (Northern Baptists dissociated from the Southern Baptists because the Southerners refused to abandon their pro-slavery attitudes.) Once slavery was ended, Southern Baptists and other Protestants continued to treat black people as subhuman by supporting Jim Crow and becoming active in the white terrorist Ku Klux Klan.
With its sordid history, Christianity appeared to be the last faith that a black man could adopt, the home of white anti-black terrorism.
But Black Liberation Theology freed Christianity from its association with slavery, anti-black hatred, and anti-black oppression.
Anyone passing a Southern Baptist edifice should pause to reflect on their legacy of racial hatred.
It shows that conservatives irrespective of their religion, race, ethnicity do not follow what they practice. What happened to the loved abstinence only theory of the conservatives? Had Chelsea been pregnant, the right wing lunatics would have vilified Hillary and Bill. Now there is not only a teenage mom but also a teenage bride. What an example!!
Black Liberation Theology was a natural response to the race-supremacist "Christianity" of Southern Protestants.
Sexual molestation of children by adults is a natural response to the adults themselves having been sexually molested as children. This does not mean that child molesters are something other than monsters. Morally mature adults recognize that an explanation isn't the same thing as a valid excuse.
What happened to the loved abstinence only theory of the conservatives?
At a guess, I'd say Bristol Palin didn't stick to that particular plan.
If you think that social conservatives believe in vilifying and attacking pregnant teenagers, though, you've been watching too many bad movies. The social conservative view is that Bristol made a mistake, but has accepted the consequences of that mistake in the appropriate manner. She's having the kid, getting married, and raising it in a loving environment. Not an ideal situation, given her age, but the best that can be hoped for given her original mistake.
had Chelsea been pregnant, the right wing lunatics would have vilified Hillary and Bill.
Congratulations on being just as bad as the "right-wing lunatics" of the 1990s. I might recommend that you aspire to something a little higher, though.
What an example!!
She makes a good example of what a pregnant teenager ought to do. Obviously the pregnancy itself is not something being held up as desirable. :)
AND: The hunky boyfriend.
RRRR. Wait, no, wrong, bad, bad Vic. You're going out with another guy. Slap.
First hit on Google. A webpage under his name. It's inaccessible right now. Possibly a fake, and therefore taken down, or swamped with traffic.
Oh, and did you guys see this?
People Magazine snags first Palin interview
PEOPLE MAGAZINE!
Wow, Team McCain team are banking HARD on the average, unchic, unelitist American coming through for him and Palin in November.
What an amazingly savvy strategy.
Here is a preview of the cover
Beautiful! And LOL! Looks like an ad for the newest hit sitcom. ;)

With its sordid history, Christianity appeared to be the last faith that a black man could adopt, the home of white anti-black terrorism.
And yet one of the most underreported aspects of Black America is their INTENSE Christian faith.
Whereas other nations with sizeable black populations have a distinct animist culture (Brazil, Cuba, Haiti), American blacks are characterised by their adoration of Jesus Christ, his message, and the various pentecostal churches which comprise their heritage.
Another underreported fact -- black Americans comprise the single fastest growing Catholic demographic.
Must be the schools. When they can receive a more structured education at a private Catholic school, public schools become a distant memory.
Cheers,
Victoria
Just because Trig Palin is not Bristol Palin's baby does not necessarily mean that he is Sarah Palin's. There are still some very odd aspects to her announcement, and the birth and delivery, that deserve further examination.
There is also the issue of flying 10 hours after one's water has broken to have a baby in an obscure rural hospital based on one or more phone calls with a doctor thousands of miles away.
Sarah Palin is doing the right thing by Bristol Palin. Her conduct and judgment in connection with the birth of Trig Palin, however, are not beyond question -- factual and ethical -- at this point.
Pregnancy is natural...and i'd say what like 50-100 odd years ago having kids at 14 was the norm. People shouldn't rush to judge someones decision to bring in a child into this world. Albeit the longer one waits...the chances for providing a better future increase. But in Bristol's case, they seem pretty well off...so i doubt she'll face any "real" hardships.
Perhaps Sarah Palin should be at home, taking real care of her family rather thenm campaigning around the country on "family values".
Ahh, I see the pregnant-barefoot crowd have arrived.
Okay, who's got a shoehorn on them? I'll take off her left shoe first.
The tragedy is that it looks like we're just going to miss 700....
Wild ride.
My theory is that this will all rebound negatively on Obama. And that they won't be able to stop. 8-9 weeks more of this?
And yet one of the most underreported aspects of Black America is their INTENSE Christian faith.
Which, of course, is one of the stubborn facts that makes FLS's attempt to excuse the racism of Black Liberation Theology so nonsensical. The overwhelming majority of American black Christians belong to normal, non-racist Christian churches. The nuts like Wright -- and, until the heat got too much, Obama -- are a distinct minority. Implying that blacks have no choice but joining a racist religion is both wrongheaded and insulting to the majority of black people.
LAST!
I hope.
Democrats lost my vote tonight after seeing them on Larry King make such a big deal of this.
Obama was born to a teenage mother. Does that mean he was raised without family values?
No way, Trooper.
The nuts like Wright -- and, until the heat got too much, Obama -- are a distinct minority. Implying that blacks have no choice but joining a racist religion is both wrongheaded and insulting to the majority of black people.
Is it a wonder this happened to him though?
Obama self-identifies as black, but he's not a descendant of the dominant black-slave culture.
His mother grew up with non-practising Methodist/Baptists parents, and his father was Muslim. Both were religious sceptics, to the point of atheism.
This singular lack of input from the black American Baptist culture, so crucial to understanding that community, must've made it that much easier to join a hate-filled, un-Christian church like Trinity.
It's not the only explanation, but you have to imagine it was a crucial component.
Cheers,
Victoria
I'm just a bit curious. The Magazine HOLLYWOOD GOSSIP reported 0bama's profiles were found on the famous 40+ rich women seeking affairs site [ seeking40plus dot com ] last week and he was seeking his mature baby there now!
Isn't it great that Palin's daughter had a CHOICE to decide what to do with her pregnancy. Its not that I agree with abortion..becuase I don't...but it is a women's CHOICE not the governments decision. The Palin's are proud of the choice of their daughter..they should be...BUt BE PROUD SHE HAS THAT CHOICE AND WE LIVE IN THE GREAT USA.
Screw the left, screw Daily Kos and screw Obama. Let's go out and win this one for John McCain and Sarah!
The birth certificate and testimonial from medical staff who attended the birth are ways to rebut inferences about maternity, stemming from numerous objective facts, including that in a photo when somebody was seven months pregnant with Trigg, Bristol looks to be with child and Sarah does not. Add to that the facts (1) that Bristol Palin missed five months of high school with "mono," during the conclusion of someone's pregnancy with Trigg, (2) that Sarah Palin did not announce her pregnancy until shortly before Trigg's birth, (3) that she never appeared to "show", and (4) the fact that Sarah Palin allegedly flew from Texas seven hours to Alaska while IN LABOR. At the very best, this woman had a high risk pregnancy at age 44, did not slow her schedule for the welfare of her unborn child, did not have a healthy weight gain to nurture him, and took enormous risks with her health and Trigg's to fly cross-continent while IN labor. At worst, we have a former Miss Wassilla desperately obsessed with appearance, and willing to lie about the maternity of her kin, and to fabricate a "new" pregnancy for her daughter, all to avoid "scandal."
I am skeptical that Bristol is "really" pregnant just now. How come now she is rail thin when while she was deathly ill with "mono" and someone was 7 months pregnant with Trigg, Bristol looked like she'd swallowed a watermelon? I'm predicting the Palin family will "tragically" report a "miscarriage" in the next month or two and hope that the fake preganancy/fake birth mom of Trigg will be pulled off as an epic hoax.
Either way, this is a woman who went wrong somewhere in teaching her teens about "where do babies come from" but holds fast to the notion that the public schools should not do it.
Repeat, I don't think Bristol is pregnant now. HOAX!
Wouldn't it be cool if bloggers honored the children of candidates and no one posted diddly about the children and no one else wrote comments about them?
she is a teen mother and you people are prasing her like she should get an award......it is a disater waiting to happen.......a marriage waiting to fail.......because their parents decided they should get married because she is having a baby.......What ever happened to first come marriage then come baby........she is not a hero ...she is another unwed, teenage, immature girl having a baby........ANOTHER BABY HAVING A BABY...........
I don't have time to read all of the comments and never heard the rumors about the youngest of the Palin brood. However, this proves that the abstinence only approach to sex education, which Palin endorses, doesn't work. It's all well and good that her daughter has decided to keep the baby and marry the father. However, it is not unusual or extraordinary. Young girls do that each and every day and have to struggle in ways the Palin daughter won't have to. The main issue here is: what policies will a McCain camp bring to the table to stem unwanted teenage pregnancies? Will they continue to support an abstinence only policy that didn't even work in the vice presidential candidates family?
If she is 17 and 5 months pregnant, how old was she when she got that way? And the guy? He has said he wants no kids and lives only for hockey! nice match.
That said, I could never support a politician who tried to ban books and then, when the librarian refused, threatened that librarian!

ANOTHER BABY HAVING A BABY...........
This Alaskan baby can hunt moose with her mother.
Welcome to the world of survival of the fittest, which matures you much quicker than anything which grows up at the strip-mall.
Agreed. Let them stay in Alaska and hunt moose. Has Palin ever been out of state?
Isn't it great that Palin's daughter had a CHOICE to decide what to do with her pregnancy.
"You're having a baby, aren't you glad you could have killed it before it was born" is probably not an argument most people will find convincing.
God, this looks just like Desperate Housewives. Where was Trig during Palin's last 2 months pregnant? Who says that the boy was realy born in April? who can assure that trig is really 5 months pregnant? Why is the boy deficient? maybe her mother couldn't take an ecography, cos then everybody would know something that everyone tried so desperatly to hide.
Too many questions, for just one situation. It just doesn,t smell right.
Okay, why isn't anyone saying anything about the age here ...there are quite a few instances out there where the boyfriend ends up getting prosecuted for having sex with his underage girlfriend -- suddenly the right-wing lawmakers are quiet. What's up?
I checked Alaska's laws already and it seems that this guy is in the clear on statutory rape. And the Supreme Court has already ruled that forcing a child to deliver an unwanted baby does not constitute child abuse. So, at least legally, these people are in the clear. But this entire episode could be from the Jerry Springer Show. I feel sorry for the girl to be stuck with suck cold-hearted parents.
Why is this such a big deal when you consider Obama has sponsored a Bill called the "GLOBAL POVERTY ACT" that will cost American taxpayers OVER $870 BILLION in the NEXT 10-YEARS??!!
This Bill has PASSED THE SENATE and will soon be a reality!! WAKE UP, AMERICANS!! Why has almost no one heard about this Bill yet? Ask the Obama loving-media.
Sarah Palin has an unmarried teen daughter. Big friggin' deal. Obama is bankrupting America by putting the ENTIRE WORLD ON POVERTY!!
Think I'm lying? Look up S. 2433 GLOBAL POVERTY ACT sponsored by Barack Obama.
Abstinence does work. Unless you get artifically inseminated or IVF.
The thing is that people will do what they want to do often times. There are less and less willing to "deny themselves" and wait until marriage. The value of that teaching has been lost what with the liberal education system.
Females will get pregnant whether being taught abstinence or birth control but there are still many young ones out there waiting for marriage.
You have to wonder at the numbers of aborted babies by those who were given condoms and taught about birth control. They don't always use the knowledge and get pregnant anyway.
We just aren't made aware of it because of the liberal media bias not reporting it and because the babies are killed and not allowed to be born.
I admire Palin and her daughter for putting baby first.
It shows their character more that "getting pregnant before marriage" does.

Why is Bristol Palin being pregnant big news! It has nothing to do with who her mother is or how she would be a good or bad vice presidential canadate. Teenage girls don’t always listen to their parents even when brought up in a good home with good moral/values. I am living proof of that. Children are not punishments, they are a gift, and sometimes that gift makes you grow up a little faster than plannd, but at the end of the day, even on the bad days that child is the number one thing that keeps most young parents going. Yes Bristol is pregnant, but what about those other YOUNG parents out there? You dont see them making the news. I don’t see how her being pregnant and getting married to please the US population is any of our concern. I didn’t see the media being alerted when I had my son at 21 or when my classmates in high school at age 16-19 got pregnant.
The Palin family released this information themselves. Shocking to you right-wingers, but true. If it was Chelsea Clinton, would you be falling all over yourselves to defend her?
Let's be clear on why this is public in the first place. Damage Control.
I work for a non-profit, that deals with "special needs children". Our company has lost 80% of its federal funding over the last 8 years. What Sarah said last night is the first time I've heard a major candidate mention this. I've also had the opportunity to meet some of the older parents who got married at a young age, because of an "unplanned" pregnancy. Most of them talk with an undercurrent of regret, and even my own in-laws (who had an baby before finishing college and got married on the fly) have said they wouldn't of married if it wasn't for the baby. They've been in counseling and decided to stay together to keep the family together.
My point? Well, two points are being presented here, one, Bristol didn't make a good choice--Getting married isn't the best follow up choice IMO. Second, the Palin's are being as up front about this 'private matter' and really overly supporting this incident to quash any further media speculation and the rumor mill.
Let's be serious, there were times in our country where this type of activity was condemned. I grew up a staunch republican, my parents went to a church where a girl was excommunicated as a result of a unwanted preg.
Sarah gets no kudos for treating her kids well or with compassion/support. She gets them for talking about supporting the children who really need us.
Sarah Palin can not even take care of her family, how is se suppose to take care of the country. Now that she and her daughter are in the limelight she has made her child look like an "unmentionable"!!!
The memes take a while to leak out to the fringes, apparently.
Does Sarah have 4 or 5 children. We “the people” need a simple fact check! If you want to know the truth about the Sarah Palin pregnancy HOAX, check out this website which has all the links and facts/lies in one place. Give yourself an education and then you can judge for yourself! These are almost all news articles and some simple mental conclusions.
http://www.ourchiropractic.com/sarah-bristol-fake-pregnancy-hoax-links.html
the responsiblity of teaching your children about pregnancy and safe sex or abstinance should not fall on the shoulders of the state it should befall the parents. the state should not be responsible for raising everyone's kids, that is the parents job.
and when obama stated that if his children made a mistake he would not want them "punished with a child" is ridiculous, since when is a human life pumishment? babies are gifts from god not punishments, and if he were to rid hi family of this so called punishment he would have to murder and innocent baby that has never done anything wrong. abbortion is wrong, if someone murdered someone elseyou wouldnt punish their kids, you would punish the murderer.
obama does not know what he is talking about and will ruin this country if elected, he is fed information and has absolutely no experience and doesnt understnad the consequences of many of his plans.
and along with his plans, he never says what they are or how they are going to work, he only has them, which enforces that fact that he ha absolutely no idea what he is talking about and is going to get pounded in the debates against McCain.
NOBAMA VOTE McCAIN!
Right-wing claptrap! What Palin is doing is child abuse, pure and simple. Don't defend such disgusting mothering.
