Simels is some sort of "pop music critic", which explains his remarkable ability to provide us a seemingly endless stream of monotonous repetition.
I would think, however, that a "pop music critic" would be used to talking about onion ring pussies and vegetal cocks, given that august medium's love of embarrassing sexual metaphors.
Funny, though, a "pop music critic" scolding people about intellectual incoherence and breathy self-absorption.
Ann wants to weigh in on the Hardball Coulter-Edwards encounter....driven to separate herself from her liberal millieu...Ann will be searching or attempting to construct an angle that places the media, liberals, and/or dems in an unfavorable light.
"I would think, however, that a "pop music critic" would be used to talking about onion ring pussies and vegetal cocks, given that august medium's love of embarrassing sexual metaphors."
I looked at his blog and saw that he seemed to think it was worth it to let people know that "Pictures of Lily" is a song about masturbation. What powers of observation! 40 years later. In the year, 2047, is he going to let us know that some obscure political figure named Hillary Clinton once released a video that had sexual allusions?
"I looked at his blog and saw that he seemed to think it was worth it to let people know that "Pictures of Lily" is a song about masturbation. What powers of observation!"
Of course you didn't look closely enough to note that somebody else wrote that item. Talk about powers of observation.
BTW -- unlike the Hillary video, "Pictures of Lily" actually is about sex.
The author, Pete Townshend said the song was about masturbation. Lily was Lilly Langtry, who, as the song says died in 1929, 38 years before the song was recorded, so even necrophilia was out of the question by then.
Here are the lyrics, BTW: I used to wake up in the morning I used to feel so bad I got so sick of having sleepless nights I went and told my dad
He said, 'Son now here's some little something' And stuck them on my wall And now my nights ain't quite so lonely In fact I, I don't feel bad at all
Pictures of Lily made my life so wonderful Pictures of Lily helped me sleep at night Pitcures of Lily solved my childhood problems Pictures of Lily helped me feel alright
Pictures of Lily Lily, oh Lily Lily, oh Lily Pictures of Lily
And then one day things weren't quite so fine I fell in love with Lily I asked my dad where Lily I could find He said, 'Son, now don't be silly'
'She's been dead since 1929' Oh, how I cried that night If only I'd been born in Lily's time It would have been alright
Pictures of Lily made my life so wonderful Pictures of Lily helped me sleep at night
For me and Lily are together in my dreams And I ask you, 'Hey mister, have you ever seen' 'Pictures of Lily?'
Ann, Bill can have all the onion rings he wants, in the Lincoln Bedroom.
The funny part will be Hillary's re-election campaign. When the Godfather parody occurs, and a Senator from Arizona says he has many good friends from Arkansas and would like to visit there as well...
But no Althouse participant (including She herself, if Ann herself hasn't seen it) should be without seeing the stockings on display in this (among other things, they stop at low thigh: you know, just a bit above the knee).
It's too late now, but it would have been way, way, way too much fun to have seen Lat and Althouse spoof off this one (maybe even wave, if not wear, facsimiles of the stockings?).
In any case, and despite anything (everything?), the last link is worth following, if only on account of the fact that it leads you to an encounter with the incomparable Buddy Rich.
Well, of course, you know, only if you're into that sort of thing.
***
As for the pairing of Lat and Althouse? Yeah, baby--I think that one has legs.
Hey--URL in the second link is wrong--and for some reason, I can't bring back the original one, even going through history. Dead page, and I don't know why.
So try this one, if interested. The thing is, it isn't the one I originally found (origin: Germany), and more important, it's a medley.
Of course you didn't look closely enough to note that somebody else wrote that item. Talk about powers of observation.
BTW -- unlike the Hillary video, "Pictures of Lily" actually is about sex.
Mr. Simels:
Thank you for finding the term intellectual incoherence to describe Ann's blather. I often suffer from word finding problems, so I appreciate you bringing a more precise terminology to the table. Nonetheless, I believe her popularity will continue to grow. The hole in her attention bucket (i.e. craving for attention), superficial novelty (a former liberal law professor, now conservative convert, from Madison, Wi), willingness to deceive others (at this point it is hard for me believe that she does not accept that her freudian interpretations are simply a popularized caricature of analysis...then again, maybe she is also deluding herself), her Coulterish-O'Reilly sadism, and the blogging fad itself are all likely to carry her to greater heights of popularity.
Ann, I think you should issue Mr. Simels an apology.
The Left at its angry best. Classic examples of the belligerent response seen when primitives interpret outsider behavior as an attack on their village idol. Where's a conservative social anthropologist when you need one? Oh, wait. Extinct species...

Go for the eyes, Ann.
Not everyone questioning Ann is from the 'angry left'. I never voted for Clinton and am desperately hoping for an alternative to someone like both Hillary.
It is my speculation that Ann is most comfortable in a polarized environment.

But Mindsteps: you are a nut case. You make it sound like you have devoted your life to trying to figure out the phenomenon of this person with a blog.
As for Steve Simels, perhaps he is a good music critic. But Pauline Kael was a great movie critic. Her political acumen was legendarily crappy, though.

You mean I am even more of a nut case then say Rush Limbaugh or Bill O'Reilly who on a daily basis, both rightly and wrongly point out the liberal biases in the mainstream media.
Alhouse's fans permit her and others to critically review and question her liberal surroundings, yet want visitors to suspend their critical thinking when it comes to examining Ann's material or those who echo her point of view. On those few liberal blogs that I visit (I can barely stomach them), I question their agenda driven drivel as frequently.
I am simply asking folks to consider the possibility that Ann's political takes are less influenced by reality and more influenced by her own reactions to spending so much time in Madison, Wisconsin.
Is it a problem that I want to encourage people to reduce the finger pointing and simplistic name calling and take more responsibility for their own failings? Look call me on hypocricy as well. So call me a nutcase. I think the tendency to attack others for behavior we are guilty of ourselves is childish.
Mindsteps -- You would be a complete nut case if you dedicated any meaningful part of your life to yammering and yammering about what Rush Limbaugh says or what Bill O'Reilly says. Or Ann Althouse. A comment here and there? Fine. But you passed that line weeks ago.
At some point you need to accept the fact that you don't see eye to eye with a single blogger and either broaden your comments to substantive issues, or move on.
Seven Machos....I can see your point. I have been relatively monomaniacal on the issue, so I will back off. Here is the reality...I actually 'know' very little....about very little. On a rare occasion, I do comment on substantive issues when I feel like I have something over and above what anyone else has to say.

Please let it be more vegetable porn.
Anything less would be a betrayal of your high standards of intellectual incoherence and breathy Peggy Noonan-esque self-absorption.
ann....this is not to your post...but i would appreciate your thoughts on the Cheney/executive status.
thanks
Wow steve simels, et al have already burned up the comments over there,
Legally chocolate says As a female and as an attorney, I can say that this woman is an idiot.
I'm guessing she's not much of either.
"Althouse - great onion domes."
The Russians would love you.
Vegetable love - it is a pure Andrew Marvell thing. Tell me you have him by your bed every night.
I couldn't really love a woman who didn't in turn love our metaphysical poets.
Call me parochial, but there you have it.
Nothin, and I mean nothin beats battered and deep fried vagina with my burger. Mmmm mmmm mmm. An American classic.
Veggie porn obsessed Steve Simels has to turnip on every thread to squash others' creative insight.
I expect quite a rhubarb out of this bloggingheads.
Also, lockstep, unimaginative, unthinking insult loosing isn't my personal definition of 'intense'.
Wait'll you hear what I say about onion rings. I do not back down. I crank it up a notch.

I swear that some people have no sense of humor whatsoever.

I have an observation I would graciously like to make, if I may...
If that is THE Steve Simels, he is a damn fine music critic. I don't read his posts here much, but a fine music critic.
Trey
talking about onion ring pussies and vegetal cocks
Thanks alot Palladian,
Now I have the odd thought of an 'Onion Cock Ring' rolling around in my head.
Aren't us folks on the right supposed to be the prisses?
Couldn't tell from the lefties who are always attacking this site over some perceived impropriety of the sexual politics variety.
Onions are to Carrots
as
Garlic is to Parsnips
Even your post title could be conscrewed as sexual.
Althouse: I crank it up a notch.
Emeril: Bam!
Prediction:
Ann wants to weigh in on the Hardball Coulter-Edwards encounter....driven to separate herself from her liberal millieu...Ann will be searching or attempting to construct an angle that places the media, liberals, and/or dems in an unfavorable light.

It is indeed me. Thanks for the kind words.

How about a banner that said "masturbation for Jesus"? How do you suppose the Supremes would rule on that?
My guess? Not protected free speech. Public health risk. Don't want kids going blind and growing orange hair all over their hands...

Run rings around him!
La de da de de, la de da de da
That'd be the song that instantly jumped to mind upon reading this post (hours passed, though, before I could listen to it).
Here's a clip of the "originals" doing it.

We shall see.
And, yeah, Althouse (etc.), I could have--ought to have ???--simply used the word "because" in place of "on account of the fact that."
But I didn't. On purpose. Because.
So there.
Hey--URL in the second link is wrong--and for some reason, I can't bring back the original one, even going through history. Dead page, and I don't know why.
