Photos from the set.

Rick Lee has photos from the set of the movie "We... Are Marshall." The movie is set in 1970s, so the costumes are horrifying, especially on Matthew McConaughey. It's one thing to have to look like a guy in 1970, quite another to have to look like a coach in 1970. That's a truly humbling hairstyle and a frightening mixture of stripes and plaid.

A commenter on the linked blog stated that he was sorry that he missed out on 70's fashions. I find that amazing. I can only think of one plausible reason for what people wore during that era - acid flashbacks.

And the verification word is xsukke - 'nough said.

I remember how we thought about those clothes. We thought we were becoming free, and that those who went before were straitlaced, uptight, and conventional. We were bursting out of all those constraints, truly living -- at last!

No comparison, look to Matthew McConaughey as David Wooderson in Dazed and Confused. There in all his Texas bad boy attire; wispy mustache, sideburns, David Soul haircut and Ted Nugent t-shirt. Jeez, now I remember why I try not to remember 1976, except for the fireworks.

Oh, rats, I just remembered double knits and Golden Breed shirts.

It was I who made the statement of regret for missing out on the fashions. It was made with tongue firmly planted in cheek. I think I understand Ann's explanation for how the travesty occured, and it seems plausible enough. You're saying that you knew it was outrageous, and that was the point of it? Not that anyone thought it actually looked good?

There's no explaining fashion. It's change for change's sake. What looks good yesterday goes out of style and then you hate it and then miraculously it comes back someday (with some modifications). Hip-hugging pants for women were big in the 70s, but you didn't see bare tummies like you do now. But I think the early 70s really were different. As Ann said, it was an era of throwing out the old rules. Drastic, radical change was the order of the day. Yes Phil, we wanted to be outrageous but we really did think it looked good too. I was in 9th grade in 1970 (my sister was in her first year of college at Marshall, the year of the plane crash). I remember double-knit polyester pants I had that were wide striped blue and white. I thought they were great! I proudly wore a giant floppy bow-tie to church! I wore (gasp) platform shoes... that were orange! It truly horrifies me to think about that stuff. In the later 70s I bought my first traditional conservative grey suit. In the early 70s I was sure that those things were gone forever. Some of you may have missed an earlier post which showed some extras in their outfits. This scene is so perfect it freaks me out. That is SOOO 1970.

I forgot to mention that in the early 70's, I also parted my hair in the middle. Cool, huh?
