Slutskaya wore pants!

And Sasha Cohen?

As they say on "Project Runway,"
"too much tootie." Quit aiming that thing at me.

Seriously, I love the Slutskaya unitard approach. It creates an unbroken line and feels coherent with the winter setting, unlike naked-looking legs. And with those flesh-tone tights, you've always got that contrasting strip of fabric across the crotch -- like a sanitary napkin! And it is repeatedly displayed, and we can't help staring at it! Why is that not considered grossly vulgar? The unbroken black line of the great Irina Slutskaya speaks of grace and taste.

Haha, I said the same thing to a female friends of mine last night. The pants are less distracting and create an unbroken line. She told me that I sounded really "gay" when I said it. I'm glad somebody else sees it the way that I do!

and oh yeah, I thought their skating was terrific.
Watching poor Kimmie in the stands see her lead evaporate and the camera did cut to her after each of the top skaters performed, was so sad. I could see the difference in the skating though.

That unbroken line leaves me staring right at Sasha's crotch - I'm just glad she is not muslim, I couldn't bear to see any more embassies attacked

I think that, in a way, the pants made her look more like an athlete, and less like a little girl.

I don't know, Slutskaya looks like she's wearing a wet suit. And I don't think she really needed any more help looking manly.

I thought Sasha Cohen's outfit was perfect for her song and performance.

-and while gaping at the ladies, Ms. Ann, you look very Norsk with your hair like that - an anonymous fan may leave a kilo of lefse on your desk someday....

What if she wore flesh-tone everything underneath her dress? The first time she kicked a leg up, viewers would say "did you see that?"

Jennifer: I agree that Slutskaya is relatively unfeminine, so look at the pictures of Cohen when she's practicing. She wears a black unitard and looks just great. Don't let Slutskaya's lack of prettiness undercut support for the unitard.

Allens: Hilarious!

Goesh: Funny. (But I'm not Scandinavian.)

And you can't beat that name. It complements the visuals......Slutskaya

Ok, I just checked out video of Sasha Cohen practicing. You're right, the unitard can look very pretty.

I still like this particular little skirty number though - I'm not sure a unitard would have worked for a Russian folk dance.

Comments have me laughing...but the topper:

I like the flow of the skirt as they skate around the rink, it reminds me of the velocity of the sport. The unitard was flattering for Slutskaya but I kept thinking she needed a cape to look like a real superhero.

The ice dancer's are hands down the best dressed of the games, lots of fleshtone fabric over there and not much tootie. I assume that ice dancing is a lower velocity 'sport' so they compensate with longer skirts.

"Like a sanitary napkin!" I will never see ice skating the same again.

Haven't been paying much attention to the Olympics but they cannot be any less dressed than the incredible ladies on PBS ballroom dancing competition who with those terrific bodies barely covered by scraps of cloth tentatively held together by a strap here and there, go whirling, bouncing, sliding and flipping into the air with never an accident.

Dude, who does Slutskaya remind me of...?

I've been racking my brains since last night, when I saw a close-up.

Is it Isabella Rossellini? Hmm.

Anyway, about the 'tards:

Yes, it was an interesting change-of-pace, but since I'm a Conservative in most things, I'll just say that I prefer the traditional skirts.

Like the recent sea-change to the dressy black suits instead of dinner jackets at the Oscars, I say, if you can't put on the ritz even for special occasions, then when?

I don't mind if Irina did it. I do mind it if it becomes the norm.

P.S.: I like Sacha Cohen a lot, and her programme was way better than Slutskaya's, but poor Irina. She seems like such a sweet girl, coping with a lot of emotional duress with her sickly mother.

If she wins the gold, fine.

Cheers,
Victoria

LOL!

And I don't think she really needed any more help looking manly.

Her rump is frankly quite boyish -- muscly in all the wrong places.

However, before I saw Ann's caption, I thought she had posted a BELATED photo of Johnny Weir.

My gaydar is going haywire here.

Cheers,
Victoria

You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have The Facts of Life, the Facts of Life. ...

Obviously, Kimmie is Blair, Irina is Joe, Sacha is Natalie, Arakawa is Tootie, and Emily Hughes is Mrs. Garrett.

Cheers,
Victoria

Well, thanks for destroying figure skating for me forever. Instead of thinking about grace and beauty I'll be thinking about feminine hygiene products.

I loved the unitard on Slutskaya - loved the unbroken line - it really emphasized her extensions and, to me, anyway, it seemed to "show" her work better. I thought it was the best I'd ever seen her skate, and I have been known to remark, previously, that she skated like a tank. The unitard did her well.

Cohen also skated the best I've ever seen her do, and her costume suited the "carnival of venice" theme, but in another year or two that color, those wickety-wacks, will make her look very old and tired.

I thought both women skated very well, but Sasha had the edge in choreography. Hers was perfect!

Tampons, people. Tampons.

"Arakawa is Tootie."

You can't say that here! Not on this post!

I put a few bucks on the Vegas line that today's meme on Althouse would be feminine hygene products and ice dancing... I now own France!

Bottom line, if you will: some women, including Ann, do not share the typical male reverence for the tootie. For many of us, it is nearly impossible to have a flawed presentation. And the concept of "too much tootie" is frankly ridiculous.

Palladian said...

I personally favor the unitards, and I'm glad the men all wear them. It makes their muscular thighs and uh, other attributes quite easy to appreciate. Even the catty little red-gloved twink Johnny Weir (must.. resist.. temptation.. to.. say.. Johnny.. Queer...) has a fine, abeit lithe, body. It's funny how the unitard on female skaters make them seem less sexually provocative, but on men it actually emphasizes certain manly attributes. After all, putting Cohen's outfit on Johnny Weir wouldn't do much to augment his rather tenuous manliness , to say the least.

Ann Althouse said...

"Terrance and Phillip" -- LOL.

"And the concept of 'too much tootie' is frankly ridiculous." You didn't see the episode of "Project Runway," with Emmett's "dowdy and vulgar" skating dress. The skirt was too short in the front. No matter how much you like short skirts, you can't have "tootie" showing below the hem. That's just odd looking. And sorry, I hate the camera angles where it's aiming straight at me.

jeff said...

Regarding the "tootie" thing, every single skater out there, including a lot of the female ice dancers, were doing what Sasha is in the photo - and worse.

I'm sure that Slutskya made the same moves - and if she hadn't been wearing black, it would have been staring you in the face too.

I do like the unitard (Slutskya's outfit). It looks grown up as opposed to something that looks like it grew out of the kindergarten ballet tutu...

Wade Garrett said...

Maybe I'm just unconventional, but I think that Emily Hughes is by far the cutest American figure skater. Cohen looks a little too . . . what's the word for it? She's almost obnoxiously satisfied with her good looks, and something about her makes me think that she would be extraordinarily high-maintenance. Emily Hughes seems a lot friendlier and is adorable in a girl-next-door sort of way.

David McDougall said...

Yes, Sasha is totally high maintenance. that's why she's had 3 (or is it 4?) different coaches over the last 4 years, looking for someone who will help her win Gold.

did anyone catch her say "F*ck Yeah!" after she nailed her short program? it was clearly visible as she skates away. that was enough to make me a fan - as if cute and (presumably) Jewish didn't already do the trick.

I'm not sure that the traditional tiny-skirt skating outfits are that vulgar. It's all about context, and the focus is so heavily on skating performance and so little on being 'sexy' that I think its not what the spectator is naturally drawn towards.

Ann, you're not getting all prudish on us, are you?

I knew this post was going to be filled with a host of irresponsble comments by women praising the unitard.

Is there any way to kill what's left of the dwindling interest in the Olympic games?

First off, who wants to see a woman dancing in the same semi-gay outfit as the men? Who wears unitards in real life? Astronauts! Garbage men! Maintenance crews! Pullease. I don't want to be looking at my tv screen, seeing some gal with short little boy hair, and a unitard, making me think little Tommy next door suddenly made it into the Olympics.

When the Olympic movement is finally dead and buried (and it soon will be due to cost, incoherent rules, bad tv coverage and lack of interest), the unitard will have a hand in that.

For a guy, the biggest thrill in ice dancing is not the performance. It's what you can see, or think you see, or hope to see, as some woman spreads her legs all akimbo excuting the various moves. I'ts one big "love my cooch" performance.

Like that pair of skaters where both the guy and the girl somehow leaned back on each other, and spread their legs wide. The announcers noticed the "interesting" position, and from the comfort of my home, I applauded their "inventive" and "creative" positioning.

Unitards... please! (And you women hope to be president some day... gawd).
