Audible Althouse, #22.

47 minutes of entirely Althousian talk. Take it or leave it. Do I say anything devastating about OSM? Do I say anything not about OSM? Wouldn't you like to know?

Dave: He's a grrrrrrrrrrrrrrl!

Professor A: ventriloquist
Joe A: her cute dummy/proto-blog

Professor A: I'm not digging the edits...I much prefer the real-time pauses, glitches, distractions, digresses.

It's a podcast and not a broadcast, so let it be 'podcasty'.

Hey, it got you nominated for a BOB. Ya' gotta' dance with the one that brung ya.

Ruth Anne: I'm not really taking anything out at those edits, just struggling with the problem of Garage Band stalling on me. You might have noticed in the old ones that there were gaps. I was just trying to close those up. It's not ideal.

Ruth Anne Adams বলেছেন...

Perhaps I *didn't* notice the gaps before. Tonight was the first time I listened with headphones in a long time and the sound quality was much better than I normally hear. That might explain why I noticed them on AA#22 and not the others.

If Moby Dick is our lens, I would think Roger Simon is Queequeg! And Ann, you don't want to be Ahab, but Ishmael, because as a blogger, you alone should be left to tell the tale.

Is there an Audible Ishmael podcast?

Ron বলেছেন...

I'm "live commenting" the podcast! Oh, how science moves on!

it's not so much the gull; experience is what you get when you don't get what you want!

Please, no more on the bodily fluids of OSM! er, ah, what?

Noooooo! oh well...

Ron বলেছেন...

54? No way! You sound like you're still in art school! Xinghua? Is that like Mothra? Is Simon trying to be Rodan to scare you?

The thuggishness of much web conversation is something that a bright light should be shown on! Keep it up!

Ron বলেছেন...

A hybrid mule? It may not reproduce, but it gets better mileage...

Ron বলেছেন...

OSM: Maybe everybody just wants to cash out! That's why they're so touchy! It's about the golden goose that is blogging?!?

Ron বলেছেন...

It does indeed sound like the clown car has come to a halt and all the pajama-clad are now spilling out!

Ron বলেছেন...

Why Cilais'logo? Because they've already bought the red sports car, and the Ferrari logo was taken?

Wouldn't it be sad to have a bad scone on your last breakfast on the Titanic? "...and then THAT happened!"

The OSMer's won't let you in their treehouse! Selling out? There's the art school major, right there! Be there be free? Would you like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony? ;-) or blog?

[Ann gets all whispery near the end...cue the music!]

I'd like to thank you on behalf of the blog and myself, and I hope I passed the audition!

Prof. Althouse has less Melville and more Swift in her, so here's my vote for replacing the Moby Dick references with a Gulliver's Travels frame.

Ann is like a majestic houhyhnhmn mare grazing the grass of insight while gazing down on all the smelly yahoos befouling the fields with their odious behavior.

(lately there have been a few yahoos flinging what yahoos fling)

And Prof. had you used Althousian before or did you appropriate the term from one of my recent comments (or did I steal the word from someone else entirely, can't remember)?

(and still waiting for the SquismTM money to roll in)

"Althousian"?

Squism me?

Probably should listen and then comment, next time.

Two phrases leapt out at me.

at about 23:45 into the 'cast you said regarding blogads "you can't just appeal to people's dissatisfaction, you have to have something better".

My reaction to that comment is, shhhhhhhh, don't let the Democrats here that, they might start winning elections if they took that advice.

And the other comment that I found beautiful, and from your tone heartfelt, at about 45:00, "the joy of blogging, the great joy of having a place where you can open up your mind to the entire world, and be there and be free, to live freely in writing".

If it were a different subject I would probably say damn, hippies. But in this case it's true, blogging is a two way conduit both opening the individual to the masses and linking the masses to the individual.

We find ourselves at the beginning of something that until now was impossible, yet in the future will be so commonplace as to be not noteworthy.

There were diarist, pamphleteers, columnist, and gossips before, but never were the tools for broadcasting the thoughts of individuals so global, so immediate, and so accessible.

It's still a minor audience for blogs, most people don't get it, many people don't want it, yet everyone will feel the effects of the awesome shift in the speed and democratization of information gathering and dissemination.

Every blog, from the high traffic behemoths to the as yet unnoticed vanity projects, are helping shape the world we live in and I have no doubt that those changes will improve the human condition.

If Edmund Burke were able to observe these changes I'd expect him to say, "hell, yeah!"

And cause no post is complete without a SquismTM comment, Once people are hooked on SquismTM you could also market a product to help people wean themselves from their SquismTM dependency. This product would be called XSquismTM, and you should get Steve Martin as the spokescelebrity and the ad would simply be him saying, "Well, XSquismTM, Me!"

(Victoria's above comment inspired that fancy, blame her not me)

Iron Fist: You're my hero! I happen to have an external firewire thingy -- a ProMAX. So, I plug it into my Mac... and then? Can you point me to a step-by-step procedure.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Slocum: Some folks have long drives, walks, and runs. It's an iPod thing.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Sorry, IF Cat. Thanks. So the program doesn't need to be in the drive, just the project?

This is going to be great! This problem has caused me hours of trouble and marred nearly every podcast so far.

Pete বলেছেন...

Slocum,

At last! Someone who agrees with me that these wonderful podcasts are just too long.

So, let's see, that's you, then there's me, so that makes two. Clearly this is the beginning of a trend.
