He took custody of his nephew's child, after he nephew was sent to prison, in 1997. So, no redemption. There's indication, in the ABC interview writeup, that he did support his ex-wife and son, though not, that I could see, whether he did so adequately, or what sort of relationship he maintained his son. Thomas's son did serve as his <A HREF="http://marriage.about.com/od/politics/p/cthomas.htm" REL="nofollow">best man</A> at his second wedding.
