...Thanks Unknown for the Monty Python You Tube....

It's my belief that we need to teach academic argument to students in high school through college graduation (and beyond as much as any pursue the 'life long learning path' that commencement speakers repeat ad nauseum....

We live in such a serious time on this planet with so many serious problems. We need people who can effectively manage arguments to persuade those who disagree with our "thinking" - we need to all learn how to become much more aware of the power of persuasion in all we do, say and posture.PianoLessonshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17501310618624381801noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6329595.post-476193929884216702013-05-10T17:45:05.305-05:002013-05-10T17:45:05.305-05:00The Greek word for that "truth seeking" ...The Greek word for that "truth seeking" is logos (and be very careful about the many fallacies of logic your opponents will throw at you). it helps if you have ethos (and if your opponents do as well). It helps if you resist pathos to seduce (like Sophists and Madison Avenue) your audience into thinking you really can "Bake Someone Happy" with a Betty Crocker cake.

Finally - it matters much that you have kairos - being at the right place at the right time to speak as a rhetor (a writer or speaker)...

Finally - whether you think you are trying to persuade purposefully or not, there is subtext (what you do not say) and situation (when you speak and to whom). The Art of Persuasion is just what we all do from infancy and beyond. That's really all we ever do. Every one of us. All the time.

All human communication seeks to persuade. It's inescapable (as we have word choices - and body language choices)....

Stop. OK. Go On. No. Yes. Whatever.

I actually challenge you to offer up one possible human utterance that is not persuasive.

(This is a grad school Rhet and Comp challenge and as far as I know - it has never been achieved)

PianoLessonshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17501310618624381801noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6329595.post-1844663656011522712013-05-10T17:22:59.102-05:002013-05-10T17:22:59.102-05:0057 comments in and no one has mentioned the eristi...57 comments in and no one has mentioned the eristic Monty Python?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQFKtI6gn9YUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00839027050501396224noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6329595.post-29238439704644422902013-05-10T16:40:06.393-05:002013-05-10T16:40:06.393-05:00that describes many an argument between me and the...that describes many an argument between me and the missus.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6329595.post-43954414827979633712013-05-10T16:35:57.493-05:002013-05-10T16:35:57.493-05:00maundermaunderchickelithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10773887469972534979noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6329595.post-59776121549718380292013-05-10T16:31:19.994-05:002013-05-10T16:31:19.994-05:00meander.meander.J2https://www.blogger.com/profile/13084492313358056173noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6329595.post-61379354104320713142013-05-10T14:33:31.015-05:002013-05-10T14:33:31.015-05:00Philosophy, Socratic dialogue, symposium
