Still 100% happy I voted DJT 2024.
However, I voted John Cornyn this past week and was disappointed DJT endorsed Paxton. Paxton is a cheating bum, but he will win the R primary.
Hard for me to vote for Paxton in the general, but I will.
I think that D freak Talarico has a chance of winning.
Good God.

Jeez if you are going to change your opinion every time someone who agrees with you (allegedly) uses violence, pretty soon you'll have no opinions left. I am really surprised Trump made her the SBA chief.

And of course on the D side, they first meekly hid, and then they exploited the thing for all it was worth and more. CC, JSM

Looking at reactions to Stephen Colbert going - both Left and Right. The Left, of course, is just "OMG, we lost such a great talent". The Right's reaction is more interesting.

Given that Colbert spent 11 years attacking, usually in the most vicious and mean way, what Trump, conservatives, and people on the right believe in, you'd expect a little celebration and mockery.

And you got that from Gutfield. but a suprising amount of conservatives just limit themselves to "well, he was losing money. CBS was right to fire him". Maybe they'd have liked Colbert if he'd gotten more Trump hating Leftists to watch his show and make more $$$. Then he'd been OK!

Probably the only conservative analysis I've seen about Colbert's rise and fall that was any good, was MRC's. They noted Colbert not only wrote off half the country, he rarely had any hard to get guests or did anything memorable in the entertainment field. He devolved into a political show that occassionaly did entertainment, instead of the other way round.

In fact, watching the clips from the Colbert final show its painful how unfunny Colbert is. His opening monologue is borderline adequate, and his ability to adlib is almost non-existant. He's not witty. He's like a 2010s version of Dick Cavett only without the wit and with 1/2 the brain power.

This evening, enjoying the Sun's slow decline in the West, I am contemplating Cecil, the cat. He has flopped himself down in a capacious plastic deck chair, rather conspicuously pointing his face to the West. He is curled up, so that he can seize his unusually long tail with both his hind- and fore-legs. This enables him to subject it to a regimen of licking, together with occasional vigorous biting. All this while facing quite determinedly into the Sun, which must be blinding from where he faces it. He could easily point the other way, and have the Sun on his back. Yet he persists.
What is puzzling me is, what does it feel like to lick and chew on your tail? A tail is not a finger, or a toe, or anything else I can relate to. It seems clear that this is just a portion of his ongoing program of personal cleanliness. One could argue that this is highly adaptive behavior, because humans would not tolerate hairy creatures around their homes that did not keep themselves clean. But then there are dogs. Anyway, I have to conclude that self-grooming is what Cecil wants to do. You can say that he wants to do it for evolutionary reasons, but that's kind of irrelevant, at this juncture. Cecil wants to deal with the end of his tail, and he wants to squint into the setting Sun while he does it. So, I am just pondering how that feels.

NYT reporting that a proposed Trump-backed memorandum with Iran would reportedly release $25 billion in frozen Iranian assets.

So the "Obama funding terrorism with pallets of cash" isn't a MAGA thing anymore?

"Three senior Iranian officials said Iran had agreed to a memorandum of understanding that would stop the fighting and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

They said the agreement would halt fighting on all fronts, including in Lebanon. They also said that it focuses on opening the strait— including lifting the U.S. naval blockade against Iran and allowing free commercial traffic without Iran charging any tolls — and leaves thorny questions related to nuclear issues for a later date. Those nuclear issues, which had been a major sticking point in talks, would be negotiated within 30 to 60 days, they said, adding that the deal would release $25 billion in Iranian assets frozen overseas. It was not clear if the proposal Iranian officials said they had agreed to was what President Trump was referring to in his post on social media.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks, said Pakistani and Qatari mediators had facilitated the draft agreement." ~ NYT
https://www.nytimes.com/live/2026/05/23/world/us-iran-war-trump

Israel must know that this is their best chance in decades to put an end to Iranian support of terror against their country and to the outright hostilities in the form of missiles and drones launched from Iran. The U.S. military has Iran clearly in its sights with the big military buildup in the region. Israel will not want to see the U.S. leave with just vague, unenforceable commitments and a memorandum of understanding as a souvenir. What began as a plan for regime change cannot end with the Iranian regime still in place (albeit with a few new faces), the ability to continue their nuclear program, their ability to support every terrorist fanatic. I don't see that Israel can let this end now. And what of the Iranian people who hate the regime, the same people who were encouraged to somehow overthrow the Ayatollahs? This seems like complete a win for Iran's regime right now.

Netanyahu must be going bananas.

This is from the New York Post:

A crazed gunman who belived he was Jesus Christ pulled out a revolver and opened fire outside the White House Saturday night, before he was quckly taken down by a barrage shots from the Secret Service, sources said.

Nasire Best, 21, fired at a checkpoint at about 6:10 p.m. after being seen pacing in a strange manner up and down 17th St. Northwest, sources told The Post. He only got off a few shots before he was shot and killed in a hail of bullets from federal officers.

At least one bystander was hit and seriously wounded in the fusillade …

Apparently the Secret Service was aware of Best because he had made a habit of loitering around near White House entry gates. I understand that the rounded bystander is expected to live.

Worst Trump foreign policy failure of either term by a long margin.

Draft proposal Trump says is nearly done gets the Strait open and unfreezes billions (some might say pallets) of Iranian assets. Then negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program begin/continue.

Ultimately when you game this through the US must submit to Irans demands in large part. There is no way out otherwise. A war just prolongs the economic and therefore political pain and all other routes lead to the same result -- the US can't win.

Dr Weevil said...

Hahahaha! Did Trump say we're going to pay reparations and allow Iran to charge tolls? Because you just quoted "Three senior Iranian officials" as saying what "Iran had agreed" to, without even claiming that the US had agreed. And Twitter says the IRGC (which is not "Iran" but a brutal clique ruling them against their will) is still demanding the right to charge tolls and keep their uranium. Sounds like bullshit to me.

Saint Croix said...

NYT reporting that a proposed Trump-backed memorandum with Iran would reportedly release $25 billion in frozen Iranian assets.

That's the carrot, obviously. Iran is desperate for money and we're holding over $100 billion of their money frozen. It's not just us, it's the entire world doing this. The largest chunk is $20 billion, frozen by China.

It's obvious to everybody that the media does not give a shit about the people of Iran. As always, they are obsessed with making Trump look as bad as possible. The media is effectively on the side of Iran in this negotiation. That's how much they hate Trump.

Of course the frozen assets are on the table. That's the carrot. More bombs is the stick.

Trump has been negotiating deals his whole life. He wrote a book about the subject. I'm sure he's really involved with this one. Unlike the delusional media, it's obvious to most of us that Iran is negotiating from a position of weakness and desperation.

Trump is worried about losing the mid-terms. Right? That's his big fear. Happened to Reagan, happened to a lot of people. The media is desperate for that to happen. The DNC is desperate for that to happen. That's what they want, more than anything, in this negotiation. That's the way they will spin it, always -- Trump screwed up, vote Democrat.

It's not the end of the world to lose the mid-terms. Just like the election of 2008 wasn't the end of the world, the election of 2016 wasn't the end of the world, the election of 2020 wasn't the end of the world, and the election of 2024 wasn't the end of the world. People who worry that an American election is the end of the world are idiots. Including me(!) back in 2016. An American election is not the end of the world. Cancel your subscription to any delusional typewriter that thinks otherwise. We are a very stable society, with an unhinged media class.

We are the new world and losing the mid-terms (oh no! unthinkable horror!) is a new world problem. (Europe = old world, USA = new world, Iran = third world). People object to the term "third world," but that's the view from our perspective.

Iran has third world problems. They murdered 30 million of their own people, who are unarmed, starving, afraid, and hateful. Iran's "supreme leader" is dead, or in a coma, or he's horribly scarred by bombs. (Think Roosevelt hiding his wheelchair, now multiply by 10). The head of the terrorist group who murdered the 30,000 people, Ahmad Vahidi, is a threat to murder the negotiators on their side. We'd like to know where he is so we can arrest that asshole. There's an Interpol Red Notice on his ass for murdering Jews in Argentina.

We fought this war to remove the uranium, and to dismantle their military assets. We're trying to remove a very serious terrorist threat who has been terrorizing the world -- and especially us -- for decades. We'll see how it goes. These are very sensitive negotiations.

it wasn't the end of the world when Obama, or Biden, or Trump was elected. It sucks, but life goes on. Whatever happens, of course Iran will spin it and try to save face and claim they made the negotiators cry. "We won the war! We've got all our assets unfrozen in 2032!" Or whatever.

We also need Israel to agree not to bomb or attack Iran. And liberals thought the Egypt-Israel-USA negotiations were tough for Carter. This is probably the hardest negotiation Trump has ever had to do. I am so happy he's the one handling it. He's a master of the deal.

Saint Croix said...

Thoughts of the USA negotiating team. "Man, gas is $4 a gallon. China is threatening to release $20 billion on its own. Israel is threatening to kill the IRGC. We'd like to kill them, too. I hope we don't lose the mid-terms. That would suck."

Thoughts of the Iran negotiating team. "We probably shouldn't have murdered 30 million of our own people. The entire Middle East is mad at us now. All our military has been destroyed. We don't know where our mines are. I wonder if we actually mined the strait? What a horrible bluff. Vahidi is threatening to murder us and rape our families if we lose face. Sadat won the Nobel peace prize. And then he was murdered. And nobody is giving us a peace prize. Fuck. I wonder if we could flee to Russia? Really cold in Russia. It feels like God hates us, and Satan is winning. We keep praying for death, murder and rape. We thought God was on our side on 09/11 and 10/07. Why has God forsaken us? I hope nobody kills me tomorrow. Our plan to assassinate the president isn't working. If only Kamala Harris had won the election. Ooo, Kamala, I love you so much."

Anyway, Wolf would go on to get married and have a baby. And mature Wolf, out of the indoctrination factory of the Ivy League, would write: Our Bodies, Our Selves: Rethinking Pro-Choice Rhetoric

Historians may (or may not) come up with accurate figures a few decades or centuries from now.

At any rate, it's not as if bandying numbers supplied by interested parties is getting us anywhere. Whether the count is 3, 3O, 300, 3000 etc the only relevant metric is the US national interest.

In my lifetime, displays of Confederate flags have gone from very common to very, very rare. They could be seen on homes and businesses everywhere, especially outside the bigger cities.

I used to speak to local Sons of Confederate Veterans camps, and they began meetings with the prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance to the US flag (which I participated in), and a Salute to the CS flag (during which I stood in silence).

FWIW, the percentage of SCV members who were veterans of the US military was easily ten times what you will find among college professors, or randomly selected members of the bar.
