Phoniness is inherent in the nature of the enterprise. The real question is whether she has chosen the best way to play the game.

Phony?

Not nearly as phony as the entirety of the corrupt American hack-D press who dutifully over-look the obvious criminality of the Biden family international gritting shit show.

What is true phoniness among politicians? Making up a lie about someone else and broadcasting it as true, right, Hillary and Harry Reid?

That is phoney, Symenna was chased out of the Democrat party by activists expecting obedience. Leaving is the only way to preserve your honor.

And that’s why she is a great politician!

Big Mike said...

Two “independents” caucusing with Democrats is already a lot. Get it up to three — or four, if Manchin follows her — may be more than the gambit can handle. (Yeah, the scare quotes are deliberate.)

As to phoniness, most are but some, perhaps surprisingly, are quite genuine. Bob Dole, for instance, was quite genuine in his regard for people, and his memory for names and faces was utterly amazing. I’ve not met Glenn Youngkin yet, but his Lieutenant Governor, Winsome Earle-Sears, is as real as a punch in the mouth.

She has been a phony all along, which is what qualifies her to be a politician. Mitt Romney is the model.

Sinema aside, Aaron Rupar is a moron.

Achilles said...

I want to support her.

But she is sponsoring amnesty right now. And then there is Ukraine:

“Today’s bipartisan support in the Senate for increased financial, humanitarian, and military aid for Ukraine makes clear that the United States will not tolerate Russia’s illegal and unprovoked war. As Russia continues its attacks on a free, democratic, and sovereign Ukraine, we must continue promoting our country’s and our allies’ long-term security – including by supporting Sweden and Finland’s NATO membership bids, boosting our cyber defenses against Russian threats, and increasing financial punishments on Putin and his regime. I stand ready to support policies that keep America safe while ensuring proper oversight of our ongoing assistance to Ukraine.”

She is probably getting kickbacks from Ukraine too.

Three things hit me watching this:

1) She's got eyes on a future Presidential run. Bet on it. And...depending on the landscape at the time, she could win.
2) I wonder what Aaron Rupar and his ilk would have to say about a Thomas Jefferson, a John Adams, an Alexander Hamilton, a Benjamin Franklin today if they were dropped into our laps to have a look around and had a few things to say. I know they all think they know Hamilton because Hamilton!, the play, but I suspect he'd horrify today's Left. 'Statesmen' tend to get in the way of people with a cause.
3) Aaron Rupar would still be a page boy carrying the train of Krysten Sinema's dress if she was still a loyal Party operative.

Hey, can we play?

Let's do Joe "Moderate" Biden. Or Orator Barry O. Or Kamala--though on second thought, she's authentically clueless. Or Hillary. Or Feel-Your-Pain Billy Jeff. Or how about the entire FBI?

Of course, some exude it more skillfully than others. Goes over well with soap opera women. Only a problem if it endangers the prog project, so Sinema is asking for trouble.

Coming from Rupar, that's a pretty solid nudge towards predisposed endorsement for any normal person.

Sinema has understood the distinction between her job and herself, as a brand. She is focused on her branding - her job is important, but incidental at this particular point. As an independent, she's going to split the votes nicely, especially if she does her job well

Transparently false.

Republicans understand completely what is driving this decision and know it doesn't fundamentally change anything.

Sinema support in AZ by party:
Dens: 15%
Independents: 25%
Rep: 7%

Sinema is going to try and "Maverick" her way to re-election.

One thing she won't be counting on is having a Senate leader who will behave as despicably towards the dem base as McConnell did towards the republican base in AZ and Alaska for Murkowski and against Masters and Tshibaka.

Dems dont do that to their base. Only the GOPe-ers do that to their base.

Dems spent $10s of millions in Republican primaries, to get Trumpy candidates on the ballot. While effective at keeping Senate control, it fatally damaged Trump's chances of being the 2024 nominee and made Biden untouchable in his primary run for reelection. A strong "independent" third candidate is the best shot at siphoning enough votes from a DeSantis/whoever ticket to get Biden another 4 years.

Sinema's phoniness is a necessary condition.

She’s interesting, that’s all. Most Congresscritters are dull or dumb or both. She’s not dull and boring. She’s not easily bullied. The leftists who dialed their game up to eleven and went after her made a big mistake. Now she’s a sympathetic and interesting Congresscritter who can make trouble for them. Even right wingers like me appreciate that. Centrists and independents do. Non-nutty democrats do too. Everybody who would NOT chase her into a toilet stall appreciates her backbone. Nancy and her thugs made Sinema what she is today and she certainly is not a boring phony like the rest of Congress.

People who want power will work to achieve that power. Sometimes it means kowtowing to the party, sometimes it means tacking to the center, sometimes it means playing to the base, sometimes it means all three in the same year. And somehow we are supposed to be surprised or shocked or incensed or whatever. One thing we should be certain about is that politicians at the highest level almost never do things for you and me. We server their purpose. Vote accordingly.

Lloyd W. Robertson said...

I predict there will be the occasional vote where she dramatically sides with the Republicans, at least for a delay "so we can try to get away from partisanship." Otherwise she will be a good soldier for the Dems, unless there is some move to conservatism on her part I'm not aware of. McCain made the occasional move to the left, and moved all the progressives to tears. Climate change! Campaign finance! Tobacco! And eventually saving Obamacare--although to his credit, McCain said on the last one he didn't read the bill--it would be rare for a Senator to do that--but he did consult with AZ seniors. They wanted to keep the individual mandate or whatever it was--a source of revenue. McCain: done.

I agree with others: the Dems who are Twitter storming Sinema are fools, and the Dem establishment will not be so stupid as to try to primary her. She is golden in AZ and to some extent nationally. Won't the Dems be needing a candidate for Pres fairly soon?

Bob Boyd said...

Sinema isn't really phony. She's faking it.

Yancey Ward said...

Sinema's move is smart. It prevents the Democrats from running anyone against her in Arizona in 2024- a three way race between a Democrat, a Republican, and Sinema would certainly elect the Republican since Sinema votes in the Senate just like any other Democrat, and will still be caucusing with them and voting for Schumer's committee selections and Senate organizing rules- she would draw most of her votes out of the Democrat candidate's hide.

So, in one sense, Rupar is correct- this is a sort of phony explanation, but Rupar still doesn't really understand the why since he is as dumb as a box of rocks.

Enigma said...

Sinema is doing the 1990s Clinton 'triangulation' move. She was going to challenged from the left in the Democratic Primary, and may have lost as a Democrat. Now, as an Independent she's set up to split D voters and make the D candidate lose if she is challenged. So, she'll either run without opposition from the left or hand the election to the Republican candidate.

That's the gamble. With Arizona being home to many California refugees (e.g., similar but notably different politics; some very pro gun elements too) and retirees (e.g., conservative as long as they get their social security/pension and healthcare checks), she might win.

Phoniness is general and universal in politics. Middle Class Scranton Joe. Just Folks Barack. Aw shucks Dubya. Good Old Boy Bill. Everybody is putting on an act and playing a role. Rupar may think that up and down the line partisanship is authentic and real and that it shows a lack of calculation. More likely it just shows a lack of independent thought and judgement.

I don't see Sinema running for higher office. Parties don't nominate renegades and third party or independent presidential campaigns always fail (that too is baked into the political system). She may have quite a career as a public speaker, writer, TV personality or guru ahead of her though.

Karl Rove was paid republican donor cash to create "pro-Oz" Senate campaign commercials that simultaneously "pumped up" (by comparison) the democrat Shapiro's governor's campaign against Mastriano. Republican donor dollars used to help the democraticals and attack republicans...just like in Alaska.

That little despicable GOPe-er move was right after Gov Doug Ducey, head of the Republican Governor's Association, told Mastriano he was just "not our kind of people", and then Ducey completely cut Mastriano out of funding loop from the RGA.

That occurred simultaneously with the McConnell/McCarthy/Luntz crew telling major republican donors to NOT donate directly to any campaign of the icky republicans.

Naturally, Karl Rove was out yesterday with an article blaming, who else, Trump for the republican electoral failures this year!

Our Turncoat GOPe-er Perpetual Get Out Of Jail Free Card.

The GOPe-ers do it because they know there is a legion of moron GOPe followers, like some on this very thread, who will go along with any BS excuse for the purposeful "failure" while the GOPe insiders continue to cash in.

FYI, it was Karl Rove himself in the 2000 South Carolina Republican primary who ran the "John McCain has an illegitimate african-american daughter" and "John McCain was a traitor in North Vietnam" ploys in the Bush Campaign's desperate bid to hold off a 3rd straight McCain primary win.

And there were about a dozen more of those as well.

Remember that the next time the "respectable" and "principled" GOPe-ers start to lecture you on any subject.

Sinema is going to try and "Maverick" her way to re-election.

It is a pretty good calculation on her part. That often works in Arizona.

It all depends on whether the AZ Democrat Party abandons her to Ruben Gallegos. If he gets the Dem nomination, then a halfway decent Rep candidate (not a given in AZ) will win.

It would be a very interesting scenario if Kari Lake got the Rep Nomination. The GOPe would work really hard for her opponent(s).

My best guess is that Sinema becomes a maverick Democrat (with support from the party establishment) and runs without Gallegos in the race.

Lurker21 said...

1. She will run and win her seat in 2024. D and R candidates will both be wingers.

Arizona doesn't have run-off elections. Sinema could position herself as the sane moderate and win, but in a three candidate race, someone could win with only 33 percent of vote -- or even less with minor parties in the race. So even a "winger" could win. I don't think one can assume that either party or Sinema herself would lie down and give up in a three person race, so anything could happen.

2. Biden will run again and win easily. Inflation will abate, and Trump will run as 3rd party candidate just to screw the R's.

Anything could happen there as well. And there's also a three-way contest there. Inflation, recession or neither? So maybe there's a two-thirds chance that the economy will suck in 2024. Will abortion still be such a big deal for voters after years of Bidenomics? Trump is a wild card, and I don't think anybody can predict what he will do.

HBTPFH: "I do wonder - who will Trump pick as his running mate? Surely Trump's loyal fan base know who it is."

It looks like our resident McConnell/Romney-tard has picked up ALL the bad habits of his dem allies Inga and Howard (Inga and Howard have been very impressed with their ally HBTPFH as of late)

In this case, the bad habit is extraordinary forgetfulness.

Up until about 15 minutes ago HBTPFH schtick has been Trump us completely washed up, no supporters, zero leverage, etc etc etc.

But now Trump winning the nomination is a done deal! Thats it! Period!

Of course, both positions are moronic given where we are on the calendar and what the GOPe corruptocrats at the DOJ/FBI will be up to and are certain to do, but thats our HBTPFH for you.

He can only see what his GOPe-er betters put right under his nose.

People in politics believe all sorts of self-serving and manifestly false things. Why is it so hard to believe that she might actually believe the spiritual stuff she's selling?

Maybe she knows what it takes to be in politics and to be president and realizes it's not for her. Her future is bright whatever she does, and as a bisexual, she has twice as many opportunities as other people.

Who will be the running mate?

YE?
Mike Lindell?
Mike Huckabee?
Kari Lake?
Blake Masters?
OZ?

I have no agenda, I am genuinely curious.

Sure, she's phony. Apparently Rupar thinks all of his other Democrat heroes are straight-shooting, down-to-earth truth tellers.

What was quite genuine was the distress of unbiased independent journalist Jake Tapper who is absolutely not a Democrat hack, no sirree.

I'll repost this for the benefit of our slow-on-the-uptake McConnell/Romney-tard:

I dont think I can dumb it down anymore than that for you-know-who.

Dems dont do that to their base. Only the GOPe-ers do that to their base.

@Drago, I wonder whether Mitch McConnell realizes what the base even is. He’s 80 years old (for the benefit of Quayle, that’s 4 years older than the oldest Baby Boomer). He’s obviously quite set in his ways, and probably he resents the changes that Trump made to the base. From where I sit Trump realized two things: (1) that the working class — both non-union but, strangely enough, union rank and file — were being screwed over by the modern Democrat Party and they knew it; and (2) corporations, through the Chamber of Commerce, were dictating Republican policy, yet those same corporations were giving the bulk of their campaign contributions to Democrats. Trump also recognized that it would not be hard to put in place policies that greatly benefitted the workers and small businesses, and so make them part of a new and stronger base.

In my view McConnell figures (probably correctly) that he doesn’t have to adapt to the new GOP base to win re-election and he’s too set in his ways to be bothered to learn anything about the wants and needs and aspirations of the new GOP base. That’s probably also true of other older senators. An exception is Mitt Romney. He’s 75 but I don’t think he is necessarily old and set in his ways. I think he’s just an asshole.

Trump IS bleeding support - but that won't matter to the people who are actually in control.

“Sinema might have a strategy - or perhaps she is the opposite of phony. Perhaps she is guided by principle?”

All of a sudd3n, the Dems can’t bully her. They were probably thinking of taking some of her committee memberships away, for when she thwarted her party on, for example, the filibuster. Now they can’t do it. She just switches over to caucusing with the Republicans. She probably still is a die hard Democrat, but they can’t take for granted any more.

HBTPFH is like a child groping about in the dark.

Dont worry HBTPFH. More instructions will be delivered to you soon.

In the meanwhile, you can focus on the highest priority agenda items of your GOPe heroes: DACA amnesty, open borders and unlimited cash for the Ukraine grift machine, etc.

All the things your preferred candidate in CO, O'Dea, had to promise to support to get cash from McConnell.

What a visionary, eh?

But you did. Oddly enough, even proudly.

So, congratulations?

You were wrong about Trump in 2016 during the primary.

Trump supporters were right about Trump in 2016.

Trump proved that he could actually get shit done Republican voters wanted done and he pulled the masks off the controlled opposition traitors in DC.

Until you come to grips with that truth and accept that you can be wrong you are going to hit refresh on this stupid blog post demanding answers to your stupid childish questions while adults are out raising their kids and doing shit in the real world.

You are acting like an immature child.

We have real enemies and massive problems to solve. If you want to be a stupid git go ahead. You provide a reasonable foil for intelligent people to point out what is really going on and how stupid GOPe tools are.

I would prefer if you grew up and started facing the actual problems in front of us though.

It's cool to have so much power.

Was the phoniness always there, or did is start suddenly, just recently, perhaps exactly when she decided to leave the Democratic Party? Is there a previous public record of her being noted by the press and punditry as exuding phoniness? If only there was some way to access her past public appearances and public utterances, and the reactions thereto, like a website that was a searchable archive of past information. Pity we can't have that.

mikee said...

Hey, google reports that the WaPo had a piece in January 2022 calling Sinema out for her phoniness over a filibuster reform proposal. So she has been a phony all along, or at least all of 2022. I guess that sort of thing can eventually wear down even a Democratic Senator and make her want to stop being phony. Or perhaps she became so very very phony that she had to leave the party because her phony adherence to it finally could not be supported.

Either way, she has a past as an accused phony.

No one ever said any such thing. Again.

Its a daily thing for you now.
