"The tweet marked the first time Trump has raised the idea of delaying the November elections, an idea he previously rejected amid concerns about the coronavirus pandemic."

The Hill notes Trump's new tweet:
"With Universal Mail-In Voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history. It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???"
Cue Trump fans to mock The Hill for taking the bait. He's just yanking your chain. Yeah, but it's gross, and we're already in pain.

I don't see it as yanking chains. I see him meaning exactly what he said. Mail in voting will be 100% fraudulent. As Scott Adams pointed out, what's to prevent any foreign power from sending a duplicate ballot to people known to vote for a party they dislike, the fake ballots of which will be discarded, giving those voters only a 50% chance of voting properly?

What's to prevent Democrats themselves from doing that?

How do you think that employees belonging to USPS unions vote?

Yup, and it puts them on the defensive to defend why they are so insistent about mail-in voting versus delaying the vote for a couple weeks.

I strongly suspect that's the end-game of the coordinated Democrat effort to shut down the US, which combined with economic destruction and stoking racial grievance represents the three-legged stool on which their precarious election hopes rests. Fuck that. If they get mail-in voting, well, the ammo's all sold out and the gun racks are almost empty too, so it's flamethrower time.

As with most of Trump's Tweets, the reactions are usually more revealing than the actual Tweet itself.

Oestensibly at least, everyone cares deeply about having a fair and honest election. The intergrety of our election process (or at least the illusion of it) may be the single most important thing we have as a country. If people lose faith in the process then we become just another corrupt cesspit country, a kleptocracy or dictatorship like so many others throughout history with no hope of betterment and no hope in general.

Unfortunately with mass mail-in voting, the potential for deeply undermining the process is very real and anybody who doesn't see that is being obtuse or lying to themselves or others. The desire to corrupt our process is possibly greater than at any point in modern history. People have strong feelings about the outcome of this election.

At this point Suburban Women have swallowed the fear so hard, I’d imagine they will swing everything. Trump didn’t create the pain we are in. Educators did, and continue to do so. Trump is right. All mail in voting is just to make left wing voter fraud easier. There will be a lot of non-citizens casting votes too as ballots will be sent automatically to illegal aliens who received driver’s licenses.

Liberal areas like Madison know voter fraud is real. Everyone does. It’s win at all cost. If they think they can just turn off the spigot of craziness they have implemented in 2020 just because Biden or whoever replaces him wins, they are kidding themselves.

GDP tanked for the 2nd quarter. Everything is going according to plan. Teachers Unions will help the 3rd quarter be a disaster as well.

Mark said, "Anything to drop his horrendous failure on COVID and subsequent economic crash off the front pages.

32.9%"

I have to laugh at this type of framing. So it's trump's fault COVID spread horribly AND his fault we massively shut down the country and crashed GDP in Q2? Both, at the same time, are his fault?

No. Trump pointed out, rightly, that states ultimately have the power to restrict the freedoms of their own citizens based upon public health information. He took some steps, probably not enough, to shut down international travel and to begin coordinating with CDC. CDC screwed the epic pooch on a massive screw-up in testing kit creation, propagation, centralized lab testing delays, and early contact tracing. I can blame that on Trump even though I think the same would've happened under OBama/Biden...but you blame who is in power, so fair enough.

But the GDP impact? No. That was our country shutting down business, travel, the entire hospitality industry, non-essential activities, etc. etc.

And that was specifically NOT advocated by Trump besides the early hot spots.

Also predictable. He's been "doing the rope a dope" [i.e. - absorbing attack with little response (for him)] since this whole thing started with the George Floyd incident. There is so much to roll out between now and election day for Trump, and he's been holding fire to a remarkable degree, a bit like the squares at Waterloo awaiting the arrival of the French cavalry.

He'll either be right in his strategy and win, or he'll be wrong and lose. We all wait for the result, as if that will give us some guide to what lies ahead. Should he lose, I suspect America will have to be punished by its new administration and taught a severe lesson about the price of straying from the narrative like it did during the Trump years. It won't be allowed to happen again.

Either way, this gets worse before it gets better. It is going to take something really catastrophic to bring this country together again.

If Trump postpones the election and tries to stay in office past the end of his term, that would be an overt act of treason and punishable by death or imprisonment for not less than five years. Moreover, as he would be committing the crime after the end of his term, he can't pardon himself for it. As he would be in the act of committing a felony, any federal law enforcement officer would have probable cause to arrest him. If he resists arrest ... law and order baby.

So who is President come January 20, 2021 if the election does not take place? Pence's term in office would also be over, so he would no longer be in the line of succession. Nancy Pelosi's term of office as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives would also be over, if the elections were not held to reelect her and the other members of the House of Representatives. Next in line is the President pro tempore of the United States Senate, Chuck Grassley.

It's actually an excellent persuasion technique, because lately there's been a lot of concerns raised about mail-in voting. Democrats already raised the spectre of election delays with their primaries, and this is just upping the ante. If there is a new wave of COVID outbreaks in the Fall (which, while I suspect there will be a slight uptick, it will be nowhere near the level shown in models - like everything else this year) that gives Blue States an excuse to employ even more dirty tricks. If the delay is used to restore extra integrity to the process then I consider that a wise choice - but I don't think it'll happen, because I don't think anyone (including Trump) wants it to happen.

Moreover, very hard-core Dems are starting to get pushed around in relation to free speech by the present hard-left Dem party and they don't like it. Bari Weiss and Andrew Sullivan are examples of this. Preventing free speech is a much more widespread phenomenon than the riots and the people who take it upon themselves to silence or cancel others are enormously unpopular and quite unaware of it. Finally, public health in Dem areas is issuing arbitrary regulations such as mask-wearing that close schools and businesses without meeting the required standard of that a public health regulation be necessary, and a reasonable means to the goal and proportional, and avoids harm. The election is the focus for all these discontents. Polling techniques that put Hillary ahead have not changed and they put Biden ahead. I think not.

The few sudden “universal” test cases, including the partial mail-in WI clusterfuck and the NY debacle, are ad-hoc actions NOT conducted according to settled law, and proved to be more than the USPS was prepared for. In-person voting allows us same-day results as we are used to getting. Clusterfuck Democrat schemes cause harrowing delays which will prove too tempting to those if low character and in charge of voting.

The middle is holding for President Trump, at least according to CNN.

I am referring, of course, to the medication hydroxychloroquine. When this inexpensive oral medication is given very early in the course of illness, before the virus has had time to multiply beyond control, it has shown to be highly effective, especially when given in combination with the antibiotics azithromycin or doxycycline and the nutritional supplement zinc.

The social contagion is worse than the disease.

Trumpers are best portrayed by the personality and actions of Louie Gohmert, as described by Charlie Sykes:

But let’s be clear: The incident does not show us that Gohmert is the dumbest member of Congress, because that is known. To be fair, he is not alone; there was a Democratic representative [Hank Johnson of Georgia] who once publicly warned that the island of Guam might tip over if the population got too large.

Even in this environment, Gohmert has distinguished himself as a super-spreader of stupidity and mean-spiritedness. During this pandemic, he has also been both an anti-mask bully and a role model of reckless crackpottery.

Shortly after the report that Gohmert had tested positive (he was tested only because he was about to get on a plane with Donald Trump to fly to Texas), Politico’s Jake Sherman received an email from someone on Gohmert’s staff who said that staffers in his office were “berated for wearing masks.”

In light of the sad news that Herman Cain died of Covid-19 after having attending a Trump rally without mask, Trump should not be pulling anybody's chain.

"how can anyone vote for Trump?" That's the message I hear over and over and over from leftists of all stripes.

How can anyone not vote for Trump is the question they should be asking. What's the alternative? The Democrats are openly violent. They have spent the last 4 years screaming, lashing out, and stirring up hatred and seething anger. What happens to that anger and hatred if Biden wins? It's going to go away? The left will suddenly be civil? They will leave those of us who are not leftists alone? They will stop rioting, vandalizing, and attacking people for their beliefs?

Hardly. Portland and Chicago shows us what will happen to the rest of us in a land dominated exclusively by leftists. One party rule, violent suppression of all non-leftist anything, churches forced to shut down; businesses shuttered, and more.

Trump has many faults, but compared to the left? How can anyone, anywhere, who loves America vote for Joe Biden? You leftists are very open about how you intend to transform America into Communist (well, fascist) China.

Krumhorn said...

All the leftie fact-checkers out their go to great lengths to dismiss any differentiation between absentee ballots and mail-in voting as if the only discernible difference is the excuse proffered for requesting the ballot.

But, as we know, the Dems are tireless, and voter fraud is precisely the name of their game. If all mail-in ballots meet the same requirements that Wisconsin voters must meet, I'm all for it. Having spent more than an insignificant amount of time researching WI voter laws after our hostess mistakenly refused to vote absentee, I am confident that the chances for fraud in Wisconsin would be no greater than voting at a polling booth.

However, I am very confident that California will not have the same requirements....not that it matters since we already know the outcome. But Florida, NC, OH, PA, MN, West VA, MI are the tipping point of presidential elections. If rather than requiring each voter to send a copy of their license or ID and request a ballot as in WI, ballots are simply mailed to each registered voter without a request and proof of ID, the results will never be secure. Simply mailing a ballot without proof of ID to the last address on file is idiotic.

But this is how the lefties roll.

If people can go down to the Publix, gas station, Costco and protest in the streets they can certainly go to their usual voting places. Hire an extra person to sanitize and spray lysol every couple of hours on the voting booth and we can call this good.

"Can someone explain the why "universal mail in voting" is bad but "absentee voting" is good?"

I'll simplify it for you. Absentee voting is a smaller subset of total votes as compared to in-person early voting and voting on Election Day. Absentee voting ranged from 12% to 22% of total votes cast over the last 7 national elections. Not insignificant, but not the whole megillah. Others have pointed out the potential for fraud or negligent mishandling of votes when they are mailed in. Amplify that by a factor of 5 or almost 10 and the potential for major issues goes up accordingly.

I have many stories about the abuse of absentee ballots, including my favorite kind of caper, which I have never done or condoned personally, but which happened regularly in my neighborhood. I was one of the goo-goos. But, to keep it short....

The dead in Chicago vote entirely by absentee. No mope goes to the polling place on election day pretending to be some rando dead voter.

wild chicken said...

"Is an absentee ballot really secret?"

In Montana, yes. For absentee there are 3 envelopes: the one it comes in, one one it's returned in, and a blue secrecy envelope that holds the ballot itself. The blue envelope is separated from the rest of the package on election day and after verification of the signature under the flap of the return envelope.

Dead voters would flunk signature verification.

Eventually some poor schmucks have to take the *anonymous* ballots out of the blue envelopes and flatten them out to go into the counting machine.

No one has a clue how you voted.

Only scheme I can think up is all D's mark the outside of the return envelope in an agreed way and *all* the ballot receiptors are in on it and trash the ones that aren't marked. Somehow.

Best I can do for now.

As he would be in the act of committing a felony, any federal law enforcement officer would have probable cause to arrest him. If he resists arrest ... law and order baby.

Its a lot easier For President Trump to get our allies to spy on Biden and other powerful Democrats, Run human assets at the Dems, get them in compromising positions, maybe set them up with hookers pee on beds and leak documents, bank transfers, e mails to the media. Hunter would be a great target for Mossad to work over. All of this quite above board, well with in the US power to do counter intelligence investigations for national security. Or so the Democrats have explained to me.

Every election day, you get to about 7:30PM and in Democrat run cities like Detroit, Milwaukee and Cleveland Democrat advocacy groups start getting injunctions to keep polls open longer.

We already know that the Post Office's sloppy delivery means thousands of ballots sent on time could be delayed by weeks.

You can bet big city Democrats are already drafting the memos about why we need to keep the polls open an extra six hours because of social distancing, and accept mail-in ballots an extra three days... five days... two weeks.

Then when the big cities have tallied up just enough votes to outweigh the out-counties, their votes will be certified and every squeaker will be in the Democrats' favor.

Just watch.

I hope, when election day comes, everybody who shrieked about Trump today screams just as loud if the elections in Democrat cities suddenly start announcing that the election needs to go a little beyond November 3rd after all.

As if.

Every damn day, we're warned to wear our masks. I hope the same people stay on people's asses to send their mail-in ballots two weeks early cause if it ain't there by the fourth it won't count. But you know they won't. They'll be standing there crying at the judge's chambers that democracy will die if the election Trump suggested postponing is actually over on November 3rd.

Milwaukie guy said...

Wild Chicken asserts that the dead's absentee ballots are caught in signature verification.

No forgery? Every election checker is a forensic writing expert? Does the party in charge of elections, which in Chicago would be the Democrats for the past 90 years, have any incentive to investigate voter fraud by its own minions? Have you graduated elementary school yet?

gbarto said...

Wild Chicken,
It's not about the ballots that arrive by election day. It's about the house to house collection of mail in ballots from people who didn't get around to voting the morning after election day when the voting trends are starting to get clearer, followed by the discovery of a bunch of mail-in ballots that really should be counted because people didn't realize they hadn't voted in time.

If you will join me in fiercely demanding that any ballot not postmarked by 11/3 and received by 11/5 gets dropped in the shredder, I'll join you in supporting mail-in voting.

But come the first injunction to consider ballots not received on time and I'm assuming fraud.

Milwaukie guy said...

Secrecy of absentee ballots? Have you heard of ballot harvesting? How many "voters" get a mail-in ballot but who aren't really interested get "help" from activists to fill out their ballot?

I realize that having 1,000 homeless people use a single address for their ballot as in King County [Seattle] Washington recently is fine. The homeless vote, about which I'm sure they debated the issues in their camps, is just another fine example of expanding the franchise. I'm not a h8ter.

Even if this is an edge case - which I hope is true - the fact that Democrats were squealing about marginal differences between a win and a loss means that edge cases are actually extremely important.

It also exemplifies that a single vote can sway an election.
