On the new "Roseanne," Roseanne and her husband Dan will be Trump supporters.

Roseanne Barr reveals. It's “a true reflection on the society we live in... half the people voted for Trump and half didn’t, so it’s just realistic.... I’ve always attempted to portray a realistic portrait of the American people and the working class people. And, in fact, it was working class people who elected Trump. So I felt like, yeah, that was very real, and something that needed to be discussed.”

What does Barr, the nonfictional character, think about Trump? He "says a lot of crazy shit." And: “I’m not a Trump apologist. There are a lot of things he’s said and done that I don’t agree with.” And: "It’s always a lesser of two evils," but she "could not vote for Hillary Clinton is because of Haiti."

I can't tell if that means Barr voted for Trump. And what did Hillary Clinton do to Haiti? I don't remember a Haiti issue in the campaign, but I see — from a BBC article from November 2, 2016, "US election 2016: What really happened with the Clintons in Haiti?" — that Donald Trump brought it up in the last debate:
"I was at a Little Haiti the other day in Florida. And I want to tell you, they hate the Clintons, because what's happened in Haiti with the Clinton Foundation is a disgrace."
From the BBC article:
A US Government Accountability Office report discovered no hint of wrongdoing, but concluded the IHRC's decisions were "not necessarily aligned with Haitian priorities".... Jake Johnston, an analyst with the Center for Economic and Policy Research, a nonpartisan group that has studied the quake reconstruction, told the BBC "it's hard to say it's been anything other than a failure". But he believes the State Department and IHRC simply replicated the mistakes of the whole foreign aid industry by chasing short-term gains instead of building longer-term capacity on the ground. "They relied too much on outside actors," Mr Johnston says, "and supplanted the role of the Haitian government and domestic producers."...

There was a gold mine and special deal for Hillary's brother that was suspect. Given that Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world stealing from them is especially repulsive.

FIDO said...

Well, if the STATE Department gave her a clean bill of health, what can POSSIBLY be said about Hillary's actions in Hati?

Sigh.

You think she didn't have the juice to put her meaty jaundiced thumb on the GAO scale? And like most Clinton enterprises 'no one will testify but we still have to say a few nasty things to maintain credibility'.

This is not the gold standard for candidates.

Hillary and Haiti is an especially gruesome example of fraud and graft and theft from the poorest people on the planet. Hillary, Bill, and Chelsea will likely burn for that one alone. There is no better example of the phrase "Grinding the faces of the poor" than how the Clintons robbed Haiti.

Ms. Althouse,

IIRC, the emails hacked revealed that Hillary frequently asked that her specific friends got the government contracts for American Haitian aid. And I doubt their pencils were particularly sharp when it came to delivery dates, cost overruns and quality of supplies.

@Althouse, you were a professor; you should know how to do more than merely parrot what the GAO, a part of the Obama administration, had to say. If you’re going to rely on what the CEPR has to say, then who or what is the CEPR? And don’t stop at their press release, but dig a little.

You can also try to answer the following two-part question. How much money did the Clinton Foundation collect for Haitian relief, and how much did they actually spend in Haiti?

Pretty sure Hillary's brother Hugh got a nice piece of the action.

Roseanne was strongly pro-Trump on her Twitter, but she recently deleted her Twitter history to (I assume) prepare for promoting the TV show without as much controversy. SJW's were threatening to organize a boycott of the show because she was tweeting so much support for Trump.

exhelodrvr1 said...

Half the country will like the show because it is not blatantly anti-Trump, like too many shows are, and the other half of the country will at least think about watching the show so that they can complain about it around the raw water cooler at work the next day. COmbine that with Roseanne's undeniable talent, and that seems like a recipe for success.

Swiss guy hired Bill for a speech to the perfume industry to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Lime oil is used in manufacture of perfumes....Clinton initiative grabs land in Haiti to grow Limes while the industry was plagued by a disease. Donation comes back to the foundation from the industry.....

"the Wall Street Journal recently highlighted yet another questionable pay-for-play allegation between Bill Clinton, the Clinton Foundation and a powerful European perfume industry trade group called the Fragrance Foundation. The alleged scandal begins with a $260,000 payment to Bill Clinton for a January 2014 speech to the Fragrance Foundation and ends with Firmenich International, one of the world’s largest fragrance and flavoring suppliers, getting access to an exclusive supply of limeoil from Haiti with a little help from their new friends at the Clinton Foundation...but only after another $200,000 of "donations" to a Clinton Foundation company, based in Haiti, called the Acceso Peanut Enterprise Corporation.

The problem for Firmenich began back in early 2014 when the "Citrus Greening Disease" began wiping out 1,000s of acres of citrus in North America driving the price of limeoil, a key perfume input, through the roof. Per the chart below, the price of limeoil hovered around $15,000 per metric ton for decades before surging to over $50,000 per metric ton in June 2014."

Google Clinton foundation, limes and perfume industry. It's out there on the interwebs all over the place.

Mistakes were made, but the 17 million dollars the foundation paid Bill for a part time job working for dear old Clinton U? Not illegal. I am sure Putin, one of the foundation's largest donors was fine with it.

Possible state department aid in assisting the foundation purchase the land to build the lime grove so Bill could collect a speech fee and the foundation gets a donation? Not a huge leap.

It seems like a bad idea. Trump is too polarizing, and Trump supporters can never be portrayed in the MSM as anything but racist. After all, if some alt-right group or Klan klavern supported Trump, that must mean all Trump supporters are racist, right? I know a Dem who actually thinks Hilary is attractive, does that mean all Dems are perverts?

I assume the whole Clinton Foundation operation is shockingly corrupt, but it's not where I am going to apply the skills I have. I'm particularly uninterested in finance. I think it may have something to do with the general decline in ratings of ABC’s other scripted programming. Roseanne was a very popular show during its time (consistently in the top 20 and number 1 for a while) so if you’re ABC and you’re bleeding ratings and the cast of a proven hit show is ready and willing to come back, why not role the dice and take a chance? If it fails after a season, you move on to something else. If it ends up being golden a second time around, even better.

It's not a question of doing your own investigation, just considering sources other than the notoriously left-leaning BBC. You devote half of the blog post to speculating about what the Clintons did in Haiti, cite a source that more or less exonerates them, and then when someone suggests a different source, you say "No." Strange.

They do share some of the same creative people (Chuck Lorre who created The Big Bang Theory was also an executive producer on Roseanne) and cast (Johnny Galecki, Laurie Metcalf and Sara Gilbert) but despite seeming to be directed at different audiences, I know a lot of people who loved Roseanne when it was on (except for the last season) who are fans of The Big Bang Theory. There’s a lot of the same irreverent humor and flawed but likeable characters that people like. I would not be surprised if the two shows share a lot of the same audience when airing during the same season.

From a show business standpoint, I think the worry about the Rosanne show (and what she is capitalizing on) is that there are a LOT OF VIEWERS who are Trump supporters and they won't watch TV much anymore.

Most of the media don't want that audience, going by their content. That a show might CATER to that demographic is troubling to the liberal elites.

I won't watch it because I didn't like Rosanne. I think it will be an uphill climb to get Trump supporters but I could be wrong.

One thing the Clinton Crime Family has going for it is that there have been so many financial scandals that most go down the memory hole. That is, if their allies in the MSM don't shove them down the memory hole.

Interesting fact: Rosanne, like Sam Kinison, suffered a traumatic brain injury when she was young (she was hit by a car). And just like Sam Kinison, her personality changed dramatically; she became more impulsive and outspoken. It's interesting to think that her entire career in comedy is most likely do to that injury.

I believe the original GAO quote was "merely to include the word 'wrongdoing' in a report on the activities of the Clintons is an injustice", but they or the BBC toned it down to "discovered no hint" to reassure everyone that they're impartial.

I didn't watch the "Roseanne" show, when it made her a star.

I did watch "Family Ties" where young Michael J. Fox, played a right-wing teenager, living with his ex-hippie parents. That was a pretty good show.

Hollywood is stuck. We live in a country with 2 major parties, almost evenly divided, but they have difficulty imagining that there are "normal" right-wing kids & families, who aren't sheet-wearing, KKK, ex-Nazis, lurking in the shadows.

Oh well.

Roseanne on Twitter was especially supportive of the Jewish population both in the US and internationally. So in addition to her support of Trump and Jews she knew she needed to be off of Twitter and delete whatever she could. The liberals will still go crazy and call for boycotts of the sponsors of her show.
Tim Allen's show, which had some conservative leanings, was cancelled even though it was very highly rated.
Conservatives never have a long life on TV. If it's not crazies threatening boycotts it's the staff behind the scenes that can bring down a show. Imagibe the writers being told they have to write a show with conservative leanings week after week? Roseanne made a deal that she has final control over much of the show. She obviously had the clout to make those demands!

tim in vermont said...

The funny thing about Family Ties is that they thought that they were making Alex unlikeable. The writers made him apologize all the time. It only made him look like the only sane one trying to get along in his nuthouse full of people he loved. They learned their lesson in the reboot “Modern Family Ties” I call it, when they made the “Alex” character kind of chubby and not good looking.

In the Midwest we call that good manners. My Midwestern Irish-German yeoman upbringing inculcated, firmly and ineradicably, certain values in this regard, namely: it's rude to talk about money, rude to ask how much something cost, rude to tell anyone how much you paid for something, rude to tell anyone how much money you have or how much you're worth.

With all due respect, Professor, I doubt you have the imagination to comprehend the level of corruption. Knowing that Hillary Clinton practically defined the phrase “vindictive bitch” and was widely expected to win the presidency, can you imagine why people might try to spin the story of Haitian relief to give her a pass?

I have a lot of empathy for people who find themselves struggling due to circumstances beyond their control. Haitians. People whose homes burned to the foundation in California, or were washed away by Harvey, Irma, Marie, or some other hurricane. I have no sympathy for people who prey on folks like that.

DavidM said...

I heard some official from Haiti on talk radio a while back raising hell about the relief efforts. His hatred ran white hot for the Clintons. He accused the Clintons of using pay for play with the contracts to rebuild things in Haiti. If you wanted a contract, you had to donate to the Clinton foundation. The highest "bidder" got the contract. The people getting the contracts, didn't really care what they were doing and made a gigantic mess of things.
