It's not just what you say. It's that thing you do with your mouth, that sarcasm thing...

I saw that and thought I remembered a quote - "Sarcasm is the language of the weak" from Salinger maybe - but Google saved me. It's, "Sarcasm, the protest of those who are weak", from John Knowles "A Separate Peace", which was a big deal way back when, but seems to have passed its sell by date.

Scott Adams has become an absolute stop down whenever encountered.

It's like streaming live porn, but he doesn't look as good when he pulls his clothes off. I don't think he's going to be able to monetize this.

Scott reports what is happening better than the rest of the olitical Commentators combined.

Yep. That is pretty much the face I imagine that the resident lefties are making when they type their non sequitur responses and when they distort what others have said.

Me neither.

It's creepy.

He's lying on the couch, and speaking in that Mr. Rogers voice. I shut it down after 30 seconds. It will be a couple of hours before my sphincter relaxes.

Sarcasm means something's wrong and the other guy has to figure out what it is.

The tool of the teenager.

Deadpool (2016)

Deadpool: (imitating girl) "Look! I'm a teenage girl! I'd rather be anywhere than here. I'm all about long, sullen silences, followed by mean comments, followed by more silences." So what's it gonna be? Long, sullen silence? Or mean comment? Go on.

Girl: You got me in a box here.

On a 1 to 10 I rate this a 2 for cheap thoughts on health which will be more expensive before substantial structural changes are made from doctor training to drug costs to dealing with this country's addiction to drugs.

Look for Scott Adams videos on youtube. Somebody uploads them pretty fast. Filter for 1 day.

Whatever new system it is, it doesn't work.

Fernandinande said...

"He used sarcasm. He knew all the tricks, dramatic irony, metaphor, bathos, puns, parody, litotes and satire."

Wince said...

In a Venn Diagram to explain what Adams is describing, I'd put "sarcasm" inside a larger circle of "deflection," which encompasses other, in some cases overlapping response strategies.

Ann Althouse said...

The video works for me.

I don't want to use the YouTube version put up by someone other than Adams.

Ann Althouse said...

"He's lying on the couch, and speaking in that Mr. Rogers voice."

Yes, there's something about his very quiet speaking....

It makes me stare at his mouth. And then in this video, he does this thing with his mouth that showing how annoying and idiotic other people are. It's gross but also very funny.

Fernandinande said...

"Scott Adams teaches you how argue like an anti-Trumper"

Yeah, right, like Scott Adams graduated from Anti-Trump University.

Then you don't want anyone to watch it, since it stops working after a brief time.
I don't get this periscope thing. It seems to be designed to let him NOT be seen and heard.

It's amazing to see this creature of privilege, who has a sinicure as a Con law professor for decades (very easy & well-paid work), channeling the rage and cultural resentment of the ignorant and stupid. It's like she thinks it's cooler to live off off Disability in Appalachia.

I had to go to twitter to be able to view the video.

Does anything, in the age of Google?

I get a notification when Scott Adams is about to do one of his coffees. A lot of times, however, I'm out of WiFi range, so watching live is out.

He makes a good point. I've run into this technique with leftist many times.

For instance, how many reasons did Congress list in their authorization for the second gulf war?

To a leftist, it does not matter. According to every leftist I've discussed this with, there is one and only one reason that was given for going into Iraq (WMD), and that didn't turn out to be as true as we had been led to believe, so therefore the sole reason (the only reason they permit themselves to be aware of) for going to war with Iraq was a lie.

And it doesn't matter to leftists how valid the other reasons turned out to be. To give just one example, Saddam financed international terrorism. You don't hear much about it any more, but remember how common suicide bombers on Israeli buses used to be? Saddam was gifting tens of thousands of dollars to the families of the suicide bombers. Once Saddam was dead, the money for blowing yourself up along with a bus-load of Jews disappeared, and so did the suicide bombers.

In a post-9/11 world, financing international terrorism is a good enough reason all by itself to take Saddam out. But not to a leftist! Saddam's Iraq was peace, honey, and little boys flying kites, that is until that evil George W. Bush came along and ruined it all.

Saddam Rewards Suicide Bombers' Families (ABC)
Saddam's Suicide Bomb Funds (CBS)
Saddam Pays 25K for Palestinian Bombers (Fox News)
Palestinians get Saddam funds (BBC)

And more recently, any proposal to eliminate the individual mandate to buy health insurance gets scored by the CBO with "14 million more people would be uninsured under H.R. 1628 than under current law."

To a leftist, that translates into "throwing 23 million people off of health insurance."

If I tell you that you are no longer mandated to buy health insurance, though you can if you want, and you then freely chose to go without health insurance, are you "thrown" off of your health insurance? To a freedom loving American, no. To a "ve haf veys of making you buy from our campaign donors" leftist, yes.

If I tell you that you no longer have to pay union dues as a condition of employment, though you can if you want, and you then freely chose to stop paying union dues, have I banned unionization? To a freedom loving American, no. To a "ve haf veys of making you donate to the Democratic party" leftist, yes.

As Noonan wrote months back, this is what we have been reduced to: being patronized by our inferiors.

Despite the sharp creases in our slacks no less!

I look forward to his next video where he teaches us to talk to The Donald at a level that matches Trump's juvenile comprehension level. In-depth conversations with the president are impossible since he is either incapable or too lazy to engage in important details. But if you want to talk about Donald . . .

Yep, made billions using small words and short sentences, while being distracted.
How's your 401k doin'? Thank Trump. Winning!

Inga steps up to make Adams point. Almost like she is trying to make a joke except you know she is too stupid.

You add nothing to the discussions on this site. I am trying to think of another poster that is less mature and less insightful. Even Trumpit brings less hatred and bile while trying to make leftists look dumb.

One can only imagine what that failure Trump could have accomplished in his life if he weren't so juvenile and lazy and engaged in important details.

It is like leftists have no self awareness.

Have fun knowing both Trump and Adams are much smarter than you and much more successful than you.

It was bad enough when Trump colluded with the Russians, but now he's cozying up to our nation's enemies. This has got to stop!

They were probably published by corporations anyway. And as I have been told by leftists, corporations aren't people, and therefore do not have a first amendment right to operate a printing press.

Adams' periscope is like...high school? He obviously reads live comments and chuckles during the video. But you only know the joke if you're in the cool crowd who's livestreaming.
