Watching the Trump/Putin presser I noticed that Putin doesn't really make eye contact. Here you see it again. Cultural? A listening posture for the translation? Beta fighting for control in his alpha? Maybe Merkel just wants to jump up and down like Ripley getting the Alien Queen's attention: HERE!

Gahrie said...

Interesting..that's pretty much my reaction listening to what she says.

Fabi said...

Can we guess what Putin was saying to her?

"You're trying to ruin Western civilization again, Angela."

or

"I really want to sit next to Mrs. Trump at dinner tonight."

As I watch this, I don't have any feeling at all that Merkel is bored/frustrated/offended by Putin.

Putin speaks German. No doubt; they are having a nice little conversation in German, Merkel is engaged, and Putin has just said something about some topic wherein the two of them are in agreement. The eye-roll from Merkel is a reaction that reflects something like, Oh yes, we both know how ridiculous that is...

Now, we are left to wonder, "What subject of importance at the July, 2017 G20 Conference would strike both Putin and Merkel as personally ridiculous?" Hmmmm!

"Mansplaining, G20 Style."

A common theme involving our President is how different people hear what he says differently.

Some hear only idiocy and venality.

Some hear refreshing truth and vigor.

It all depends on who is doing the Trumpsplaining.

Regarding Putin and Eye Contact:

1. Never look at Putin's eyes directly without protective eye gear. Even sunglasses cannot protect your eyes from the damage the Putin's rays can do to them.

2. Always keep your back towards Putin while looking at a pinhole projection.

3. Do not look at Putin through the pinhole.

Frau Merkle was probably wanting to discuss whether she should let the British escape from the EU as easily as Hitler let the Brits escape the German's owned Continent at Dunkirk.

And Puttie insisted on discussing Russia getting a swing loan to make up for the oil prices drop until the War with North Korea gets started. Only Deutsche Bank's Junkers know for sure.

Depends how you define "century"; less than 100 years ago (and a just over 100 years ago, sigh) the Germans did a pretty bang-up job of destroying Europe. I hope they don't succeed again.

The Free World was an expression used in the Cold War to distinguish the West from the Iron Curtain countries. It is obsolete. Try to keep up.

A common theme involving our President is how different people hear what he says differently.

Laslo, as always, hit the core of the issue. As illustrated by some commentators on this blog (who shall not be named) they have one interpretation of what Trump, says, does, intends. To them that is the ONLY way to see the issue and are utterly and completely unable to even imagine that other people can possibly have a different and legitimate point of view.

No amount of rational discussion will ever open their eyes to the fact that not everyone thinks the way that they do. No amount of evidence presented can persuade them that other people even exist. This is why they are so shocked, shocked, shocked that Trump won the election. "How can this BE!!!! Why isn't everyone seeing what I see. Why can't the deplorables be smart like ME!!!!"

This is why responding to those people is really a gigantic waste of time and pixels.

sunsong said...

After Trump's speech to Poland anyone claiming Merkel is the leader of the free world is a traitor to western civilization. Merkel is doing her best to destroy her part of western civilization.

It is ok though right lefties? Only poor German women have to deal with the rape epidemic in Germany. Break a few eggs and all that.

I love it that you guys think "the world" has changed so much in 6 months.
Merkel became leader of the world when Obama was in office giving Vlad more flexibility and stepping back from red lines.

Unknown said...

So Merkel is the "Leader of the Free world" now? Hmm. I must have missed her soaring rhetoric; her champion of individual liberties; her robust defense of Christianity under assault.

No, wait: she's said that you should appreciate the rapes; that only Muslims have rights, and echoing Obama that no one should insult the prophet of Islam.

That's why leftists look to her for leadership: for whatever reason, submitting to barbarians from the 700's who want to rape and murder is the left's highest priority now. And there's no one more experienced in betraying her country and selling out to Muslims and enabling rape and murder than Angela Merkel. At least, now that Obama's gone that is. The Prime Minister of Sweden is making a valiant effort though, to allow as many Swedish blonds to be raped as possible.

The left is cheering this race to submission, naturally.

Merkel, wish she was our President. Such an intelligent rational decent woman. She knows what Putin is all about and won't be falling for his lies anytime soon, unlike our President, who is Putin's useful idiot. Just think, a Russian asset sits in the White House. We Democrats, liberals and anti Trumpists are the true patriots.

Trump's ass and belly are twice the size of Merkel's.

She shut down her nuclear power plants in a bid to go green that left her dependent on Russian natural gas. How much more idiotic or useful to Putin can you be?

I love how we can declare a whole population of women as having one opinion.
Are German Women not individuals with their own opinions?

MayBee said...

You don't think they were talking Gazprom business?

But you all really do know Schroder and Putin built a pipeline together when Merkel took over, right? It's like for the left, Russia just appeared on a map in 2016 when Hillary needed them. Like they popped up as an all purpose boogey man. One day, in collusion with Trump. The next day, hating Trump with Merkel. Whatever the left needs to hate Trump for, they use Putin to do it.

Time to play America's favorite game, John Birch Society Member or Contemporary Progressive?

^I thought that was more original than Obama's use of a tired 20 year old David Spade joke about the 80s calling. Speaking of that though - hey unknown, why did progs think it was funny to be dismissive of Russia as a threat in 2012? Why did progs have no complaints about Obama promising Putin he'd be more obviously submissive once he didn't have to pretend to be tough in front of American voters anymore?

Ralph L said...

"Mansplaining" is a vile, sexist slur. Men explain things in simple, basic terms because that is how we learn and understand the world, not unlike the linear progression of a mathematical proof. This is very unlike women who tend to interpret the world as a gestalt, which can be misinterpreted as shallow and superficial. The fact is that both ways of looking at the world are necessary to solve problems.

chickelit said...

The Swiss are not joiners. They're swatchers.

Mary Beth said...

The US President for the first time in the history of Summit group pictures, was placed at the end, no longer front and center as in past year's group photos.

The rows depend on their position in government. In each row, the ones that have been in office the longest are in the center.

Find Obama in the 2010 photo and tell me again how this is the first time in history that the US President wasn't front and center.

Is that where the term "broad" comes from?

Saint Croix said...

When you look at the size of the various economies around the world

it's pretty clear that the EU exists because of an urge to compete with the USA

we can't actually get there through growing our economy

so we'll do a merger instead

this is known as "diworsification" when a corporation does it

when a continent does it, ouch

Mary Beth said...

I don't guess, I Google. http://www.cnn.com/2017/07/07/politics/g20-class-photo-annotated/index.html

big fan of their chocolate

I think their knives are overrated

Howard said...

Chicklit: I hadn't thought of that, I always thought "broad" was the dimension of their caboose.

Saint Croix said...

I actually like swiss cheese

American cheese, hands down, the worst

although granted I am no cheese expert

probably there are far worse cheeses in the world

American cheese is the Trump of cheeses

you could probably do a lot worse

but it's just no damn good

except maybe on nachos

if you dump jalapeños on american cheese

it works

that is probably what Donald Trump told Marco Rubio in 2016

Saint Croix said...

surprisingly I am okay with brie

not sure about brie with nachos

as long as you dump jalapeños on it, should be fine

chickelit said...

I was going to say "like the swiss" but that's probably just their cheese

Emmentaler-style cheese came to America in the 19th century. Actually, Wisconsin played a big role in popularizing "Swiss cheese." I don't believe there was ever a bigger concentration of Swiss immigrants than in Green County.

Ha, Mary Beth. I wonder who is peddling the talking point Unknown was repeating?

n.n said...

So, men "mansplain", and women "nag". Equal and complementary.

Another explanation is that Merkel loathes reminders of the anti-native, anti-democratic factions that arose in Ukraine and forced global refugee crises in order to coverup the collateral damage from premature evacuations and sustain a perception of "clean", "green" wars.

Google has nothing so far. It may be an original thought. A stupid wrong original thought that a few minutes of research debunked but an attempt.

This leads me to think it is Meade. He has critical thinking skills absent on the left and may not have links to the fever swamps they get their talking points from.

It's an easy mistake to make if you only read the headlines of articles like this one - https://www.rt.com/news/395618-g20-group-photo-placement/ - and not the actual article that explains placement is a matter of protocol.

OK, Merkel, not the US, is now the leader of the free world. So tell me: What has she done to destroy the Islamic State? What has she done to defeat or impede international terrorism? What has she done to improve the environment by replacing coal and oil as major energy sources with natural gas and nuclear power? Which eastern European countries has she agreed to protect with anti-missile missiles? I could go on, but you get the idea. She’s not even protecting her own people from sexual assaults by immigrants.
