Brilliant positioning by Kid Rock.

I love everything about the photograph, including the salt and pepper shakers that are luring haters to say things like "Nice salt and pepper shakers, grandma."

Stroh's = Detroit, Michigan.
In August 2016, Pabst partnered with a brewery in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood called Brew Detroit to begin brewing batches of Stroh's Bohemian-Style Pilsner, a beer derived from an original 1850's Stroh's recipe. The first batch was shipped to area bars, restaurants, and liquor stores on August 22, with special events all across metropolitan Detroit on the 26th.
Here's more about Corktown. It's named after County Cork in Ireland, from which many immigrants came during the great potato famine in the 1840s. I didn't know the name Corktown, but I have been there, because it's where Tiger Stadium is was, and I've been there a couple times (back in the summer of 1976, when Mark "the Bird" Fidrych was the rage).

Here's a Google maps link to let you take a walk around Corktown in Street View.

I took a stroll on a Brooklyn Street...

This will be another object lesson for the Republican party on how to win elections.

It is too bad Rodney is no longer with us. He would have made a great senator too.

In a crime against civilization on a par with the destruction of the old Penn Station and the Buddhas at Bamiyan, Tiger Stadium was demolished in 2009.

Serious question: How will his name appear on the ballot? I say he uses his full legal name just to make his landslide victory even more sweet. "I never traded on my stage name!"

Yes, David Begley; Kid Rock would appear on a Michigan primary ballot as "Robert Ritchie" unless and until he legally changes it.

I'll never endorse, or even have a good word for, Debbie Stabenow.

The much more serious question for you is who will vote for Robert Ritchie, the pro-choice, pro-Obergefell former petty criminal, instead of former Michigan Chief Justice Robert Young, the black conservative Republican from the Detroit neighborhoods via Harvard Law School? Bob Young has won three statewide elections.

That Dan Rather video reveals a lot. Successful people (like Kid Rock) are usually talented in many ways. He speaks well, uses big words an' a' that. He shows humility about his musical ability, and he's wrong. I don't like his stuff, but he's good at it. He also talks proudly about his ability to connect with his audience. That's the most important thing, the Trump thing.

I like the bits Althouse is doing with Google Street View. The master, however, is James Lileks. On Fridays, he uses Street View to tour the downtown area of some town anywhere in the country, and comments on the buildings and their architectural styles. He toured Raton, New Mexico this past week, and was impressed.

They played a lot of baseball at Michigan and Trumbull. A place that looked and smelled and felt like a ball park.

And it wasn't only Tiger Stadium that was killed -- and there were probably a couple of sick bastards watching and laughing about that too -- Stroh's was killed too.

Hard to believe it was once the third largest brewery before it crashed and burned.

This is what you are going to have to learn Chuck.

We need Robert Richie. In order for the conservative movement to grow and adapt it needs to modernize and become more diverse. Truly diverse. We don't need anymore harvard lawyers. Robert Young I am sure is a great guy but he has been in government all his life if he is a chief justice.

The best parts of this country don't go to school at harvard and spend their life in government.

But Bob Young hasn't spent his whole life in government. He's not in government now. He left the court. Before his time on the court -- time during which his record as a conservative in the mold of Scalia was impeccable -- he was in private practice and insurance.

That was back when Kid Rock was getting arrested for petty crimes and assaults. I don't think that Kid Rock is all that representative of the best parts of this country. Not by judging the videos, including but not limited to the sex tapes.

This is going to turn into a very stupid argument soon, I fear. I have no desire to hash it out with Kid Rock fans who like him for his celebrity. Do Trump fans understand that Justice Young was placed by Trump on the list for possible Supreme Court nominations?

So I knew Kid Rock was considering a run as a candidate but hadn't paid much attention until watching the full 56 odd minute interview. Having read your prior convincing adulation, I for one would hope the Mr. Young is still on the list, and that he is presented the opportunity in the near future. Realistically, having him on Supreme court would seem more beneficial to the direction of the country. Being a Senator just makes him one of many.

Your condescension is a tell. You do not want to engage the real reasons why we might support Kid Rock. If you watch that interview with Rather you will see that he is not a lightweight celebrity much like Trump is not a lightweight celebrity. But you refuse to acknowledge the depth in these people because they didn't become lawyers and live cookie cutter lives.

We want the republican party to win going forward. That precludes the party nominating every harvard trained lawyer elected official we can find. It is the narrow thinking of all of you people that has led us to the place where we look elsewhere for leadership.

I rate that comment 80% truthful. Most voters are either unaware of what is happening, or get most of their info first hand from radio news at top of the hour, or ABC, CBS, NBC news at dinnertime.

Agree or disagree on whatever subject, we on the internet who are interested and semi, or well informed are a minority. I acknowledge being ill informed, but am a virtual encyclopedia of info compared to many of my educated neighbors.

If he runs, there will be inevitable comparisons to Trump. Equally inevitably, those comparisons will be superficial and, I suspect, mostly wrong. As a person and prospective politician he actually reminds me much more of Obama in a single but significant way. Obama had a self-definition - a person with a unique skill to bring people together - that one got the sense he saw as political destiny. I think Kid Rock has a similarly motivating self-definition as a person who can move seamlessly between disparate worlds and operate from a ruthlessly honest perch just above with that birds eye view . That picture says what I believe Kid Rock believes about himself: I am all of you and none of you, and you never met a motherfucker quite like me.

As with Trump, this is somewhat contrived with Kid Rock. Apparently, he grew up in a nice very large house on well manicured 5-6 acres. Etc. His father was apparently a car dealer. Not car salesman, but rather the guy who hires the car salesmen. Growing up, we had a number of them in the neighborhood. It was boom and (mostly) bust, but when they were booming, they tended to have the biggest houses in our upscale neighborhood. Notably bigger than the doctors and lawyers did.

For the record, Corktown started as a slum for non-English speaking immigrants. Became known for the well kept, colorfully painted houses. It fell into disrepair like the rest of Detroit, and was on the verge of being annexed by Mexican town next door (Mexican town, by the way, was the best kept working class neighborhood in Detroit).

Then, the Hipsters made a run on it.

Corktown is now Hipstertown.

No, Ann, the new stadium -- Comerica Park -- is near the Fox Theater, just off Woodward north of Grand Circus Park. It is now part of an impressive complex of stadiums. Ford Field, the new Little Ceasars Arena (Red Wings and Pistons, opening this fall) and Comerica.

And, while it is nice and family-friendly, it is utterly soulless.

They do not make stadiums like Tiger Stadium anymore. Tiger Stadium and Fenway Park were built in the same year. They used lots of steel columns to place seats very close to the field; you are so right to observe that. The problem was that all of those pillars created restricted-view seats. So Tiger Stadium had 40,000 amazing seats and 14,000 dubious seats. I have been to a lot of MLB ballparks. Tiger Stadium was as good as any, including Wrigley and Fenway and the old Yankee Stadium. Dick Enberg, the old NBC Sports anchor once compared Center Court at Wimbledon, to Tiger Stadium.

The corner of Michigan and Trumbull where the old ballpark is forlorn and abandoned. There is a ball field there, maintained by some charitable organization that has little events.

Probably doesn't hurt tying Stabenow to Schumer. Much of America considers him almost as odious as Pelosi (And here in MT, some of Gianforte's most effective ads tied his opponent to her). No doubt that if Obamacare repeal ever hits the Senate floor, Stabenow and the rest of the vulnerable Trump state Dem Senators will be forced, by Schumer, to vote against it. The numbers are so tight that Schumer can't afford any defections, so won't have any.

When you talk about it being the third largest brewer, it was Schlitz not Strohs

You have it exactly backwards.

From Forbes magazine -

How To Blow $9 Billion: The Fallen Stroh Family
July 21, 2014 issue

in the 1980s Stroh's surged, emerging as one of America's fastest-growing companies and the country's third-largest brewing empire, behind only public behemoths Anheuser-Busch and Miller. The Stroh family owned it all, a fortune that FORBES then calculated was worth at least $700 million. Just by matching the S&P 500, the family would currently be worth about $9 billion.

Yet today the Strohs, as a family business or even a collective financial entity, have essentially ceased to exist. The company has been sold for parts. . . . The mammoth changes came in the early 1980s. John Stroh had moved into the chairman's role in 1967 and handed control of the brewery to his nephew, Peter, who became CEO in 1980. Like John, he had a plan to grow, but not incrementally: He would do it by acquisition. . . .

The next year, in what family members describe as "the minnow swallowing the whale," Peter Stroh bet the family business, borrowing $500 million (the book value of the Stroh business was $100 million at the time) to buy Joseph Schlitz Brewing of Milwaukee. Suddenly Stroh was the third-largest brewer in the U.S., with seven plants and a national footprint.

Since we were talking about musicians and ballparks, I just watched Ice Cube lead the seventh-inning stretch at Wrigley Field. If there was any doubt that rap is not music, Ice Cube confirmed it with his version of "Take Me Out To the Ballgame." I don't think he hit a single note right. I'm used to hearing various tone-deaf celebrities butcher the song at Cubs games, but you'd think someone who made a living in music would be able to carry a tune in a bucket. Nope.

He WAS loud and enthusiastic, though. I guess that probably counts for more in rap than the ability to carry a tune.

Kid Rock would appear on a Michigan primary ballot as "Robert Ritchie" unless and until he legally changes it.

Does Michigan not allow nicknames to appear beside the candidate's legal name? I have chuckled at the number of times I've entered the voting booth to be confronted by more candidates with nicknames printed than not. James "Jim Bob" Tucker, James "Jimmy" Smith, James "Chuck" Jones...

Heywood Rice said...

I didn't realize it had that connotation. I meant it more in the sense of victim of a con man, in some circles known as a member of the "church of the savvy".

The Strohs story was interesting, Mark.

A somewhat similar story of brand destruction was Lowenbrau.

In 1975, Miller Brewing acquired the North American rights to Löwenbräu. After two years of exports, Miller began brewing Löwenbräu domestically with an Americanized recipe, and exports of Munich Löwenbräu to North America ceased. Anheuser-Busch, whose Michelob brand Miller had intended Löwenbräu to compete with, called the attention of regulators and the public to the changes Miller had made to mass-produce the beer for the American market, changes which introduced artificial ingredients that would not have been allowed under the German Reinheitsgebot that Miller had advertised Löwenbräu as being compliant with. No regulatory action was taken, but sales of Löwenbräu dropped to the point where it was clear the brand would not seriously compete with Michelob for the premium-beer segment.

I drank Lowenbrau in college. Miller killed the brand, sort of like "New Coke."

I drank my share of "fire-brewed Stroh's" in the Cincinnati area decades ago, just about the time (1971?) Schlitz hired a new head brewmaster who switched the hops they used. Apparently, about 10-15% of beer drinkers including my wife and I thought it gave the beer a soapy taste.

And as an impoverished student I drank a lot of Red, White, and Blue beer, which I think was the generic Pabst. :) Not a bad beer for the price.

Way back when, when democratic politics was invented, it was clear to those Greeks and Romans that the key to political success was to become well known. An unknown candidate was a loser. There was no divine council granting righteous publicity that would allocate public attention to the otherwise worthy. Nope, it was up to the man and his own wiles and charisma.

So they invented the arts of rhetoric, to entertain and persuade the crowds.

These days it is not the need for rhetorical arts thats changed, but their form.

Of course, the Romans, mostly, had a cursus honorum, a chain of required experience, executive/judicial/military posts held with honor and success, to vet candidates. This has been largely abandoned in US democratic politics, and this happened long ago. US politics is full of "pure" politicians who have never done anything else. By that standard, a talented musician is not a lesser being.

You have to decant the whole bottle to avoid getting the yeast sediment stirred up and those battle washing parties often resulted in the previous batch being consumed on the spot.

I question his corn selection. No bi-color sweet corn in my household, never, no sir. Only freshly picked white sweet corn (preferably from my county, but Lancaster Co. corn is OK). Turn off on most semi-rural roads and the farmers have wagons loaded with ears and an honor box for payment. The corn is late this year due to a wet spring, but is looking quite promising now. I got excited yesterday at the market when they had Cumberland County sweet corn available, but it was all bi-color. I felt like Yukon Cornelius...'ehhh, nothing'.

OK, all my experience with corn, including my grandfathers farm, was with yellow sweet corn and white "field corn" which is mostly sold for cornmeal. Farmers that I knew did not grow sweet corn as it was mostly grown in truck farms for marketing fresh,

Maybe times have changed.

Karen Galle said...

Michael K. - I did a quick inter-web search because I was unsure of the difference. Apparently white sweet corn is a newer variety / hybrid. Yellow sweet corn has beta carotene, making it more nutritional than white, but the white tastes sweeter. On a rational basis, it would seem that the bi-color would be ideal, mixing the more nutritious yellow kernels with the sweeter white. Our family, however, believes that in corn, rationality is out the window.

Because Stroh's as a beer went from good to bad simultaneously with the Schlitz acquisition, I had assumed that Schlitz bought and killed Stroh's. Right down to adopting Schlitz's narrow can packaging. Now I see it was suicide. But why? Schlitz had ruined its brand by the time of its acquisition. Appparently why It was vunerable. But why would Stroh's willingly adopt Schlitz's mistakes?
