"Women Can Wear Pants on Fox News Now, But Not Much Else..."

"... Has Changed."

A New York Magazine headline.

I thought it was funny to break it up like that.

Reminds me of the most popular news show in Russia a few years back.

The "news reader" was an attractive woman who would remove an article of clothing after each segment.

I could not make this up.

Reminds me of a news report on an old bloopers record I heard as a kid. The female announcer wanted to make the point that hemlines were staying the same, and not going any lower, so she said: "Women are not wearing their dresses any longer this year!"

Fox News is in the midst of showing how to kill a golden-egg-laying goose. Sad.

NYT wants Fox to drop the conservative views.

Supposedly Congressman Jason Chavitz of Utah is going to work for Fox. Bad idea.

traditionalguy said...

Blonde, cute bimbos are still cast in the news reader jobs at Fox. It was Roger Ailes secret to success. Ailes may be gone now to make room at the top for the Junior Murdochs to take credit for being born, but they kept Roger's trade secrets.

Where's the interest if you can't look up their dresses.

sinz52 said...

Yes, all the social conservatives who were fans of Fox News never wondered why the women on that network didn't dress more modestly.

Bad Lieutenant said...

I don't understand sinz, did ladies on Fox dress improperly before? Most men have been cowed out of judging most women's clothing, so what would we say?

tim in vermont said...

That headline is Dowdlerized. That's how Sarah Palin was so often quoted.

sykes.1 said...

Fox News is fully pozzed.

tim in vermont said...

No hotties on MSNBC, CNN, or even the BBC. I think that seeing an attractive woman with conservative views causes them cognitive dissonance.

tim in vermont said...

I have not watched Fox since election night, but it would be a shame if they abandoned middle America for the coasts, where the money is.

rhhardin said...

Cameltoes could get viewers back.

This is a bad rap on FNC. If anybody thinks that Fox is alone in picking beautiful women as correspondents, they clearly haven't watched enough news on other channels. They all go for looks every chance they get.

Fox didn't mind homeliness in the case of Greta van Susteren, and Fox went out of its way to elevate Mara Liasson on pure competence and skilled experience.

MathMom said...

According to an interview with Ailes that I read some time back, when questioned about why he hired so many blondes, he said that he hired whoever was most qualified, brunettes, redheads, anyone. He said they changed their hair color on their own. He also said there was no dress code at FOX, the women chose to dress that way.

And a large number, not sure of percentage, of the blonde, cute bimbos in newsreader jobs are lawyers. As they move out of the newsreader chair and move up, you learn that many of them are really high-achievers. One, Jamie Colby, who I always thought was a bimbo with a rather harsh voice, according to Wiki:

Attending the University of Miami's International School of Business, she earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting as well as a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Miami School of Law at age 22.

I wish I were such a bimbo.

MayBee said...

I watch CBS This Morning and don't remember Gail or Nora wearing pants pretty much ever.

The dress thing seems to be a very common newsroom requirement/tradition.

Bob Ellison said...

Chuck, Mara Liasson is a hottie for her age.

One of the best actual journalists on FNC these days is Catherine Herridge. She's a pretty lady, but she makes the story the story. The other best journalist over there is James Rosen. Not my type, but he and his parents got boinked by Obama's thugs, so that earns points.

Jeff Gee said...

I think all headlines should be broken up like that. It's like having the news read by William Shatner.

Original Mike said...

I find Mara Liasson to be pretty clueless.

Totally agree. But she's not just a pretty lady; she's a completely brilliant reporter.

The fact that Shine and Ailes picked her out of the NPR/MSM crowd, and put her on with Bret Baier and Chris Wallace says something about their brilliance for talent as well as Mara's talent.

traditionalguy said...

The Nets hire cute and young personality over all else, such as Savanah Guthrie on Today.

But starting with CNN, the Cable News business postured itself as Professional Journalists from the Edward R. Murrow school. They have an international segment of audience to please, so they are more neutral rather than pro American.

Ailes built FOX in the pro American niche with a deplorable audience complete with cheerleader types to add female attractiveness. The Murdoch spawn are about to discover that FOX cannot go back to CNN's ways and win.

I watched FOX [past tense] because it was the only non-leftist news network. But, being a woman, I found the bimbo brigade annoying. Even my favorite, the highly intelligent Harris Faulkner, would dutifully sit with upper thighs exposed. How seriously do we take news analysis by someone dressed for a seductive rendezvous?

Still, the reason I stopped watching had nothing to do with bimbos or the exit of the loathsome O'Reilly or his equally loathsome female counterpart, Megyn Kelly. It was the tenor of the worldview--elitist to the core, anti-Trump and anti-Trump supporters--that drove me away [not that they would care]. I do watch Lou Dobbs on the FOX Business channel.

We are not "social" conservatives by any stretch of the imagination....however, we noticed the slutty dressing. Especially Me-again Kelly who looked like she was dressing for her night time job as an expensive escort/whore.

My husband, who appreciates the female figure, even remarked on the low cut cleavage of many of the female talking heads. Here comes whatshername...and her girls! Pretty sure he wasn't DISapproving :-) [he is a man after all] just remarking on the inappropriateness of trying to convey intelligent political commentary while wondering how soon her boobs are going to spring out.

I wondered about the physics of their bras and where I might buy some of those.

@clint, it was called "Naked News" and on one of my business trips back before I retired I discovered that the hotel I was booked into had it on their movie channel. According to Wikipedia it's a Canadian show with imitators in various countries and if you're interested (I'm not) you can still subscribe to a web site. A number of countries had imitators on the air, but I don't know whether there was a Russian imitator.

Agreed. She is professional, concise, informative, with no hint of personal bias. A pleasure to listen to and quite pretty in a Audrey Hepburn sort of way.

We mostly look at Fox Business for our news as well.

Although, I have my husband frequently pause the show to criticize Lou Dobbs' suit, shirt, tie combinations. Seriously! Blue checked shirt, red polka dot tie, striped suit jacket! all at once. Is the carnival in town. Someone dress this man!

mockturtle said...

It's funny, DBQ, but I've never notice Dobbs' attire. And maybe that's good?

Leave old Lou Dobbs alone. He may be a clothes disaster who likes to repeat himself with emphasis 5 times over 5 minutes, but he is on our side in the GOP President v. the Ryan's RINOs secret guerilla war.

We need to rename Lou as Howling Mad Dobbs, in honor of a certain Marine Commander in the Central Pacific Campaign. They both like fast victory.

ABC has opted not to renew the longtime Friday 8 PM anchor, 'Last Man Standing,' for Season 7 despite the fact that the blue-collar sitcom was ABC’s second most watched comedy this season with 8.1 million viewers in Live +7, only behind flagship Modern Family (8.7 million). It was the third most watched ABC scripted series overall behind Grey’s Anatomy and Modern Family.

Seems like shareholders of ABC should sue over breech of fiduciary responsibility. Getting rid of your second most popular show because it has a slightly conservative perspective sounds like you're cheating shareholders out of profit for non-business related reasons. 21st Century Fox shareholders should sue the Murdoch kids back to the stone age when they ruin the Fox brand and profits.

Bret Baier maybe, but not Chris Wallace. He's overrated and quite full of himself because of his being Mike Wallace's kid. I heard him get all testy on a Friday morning Fox & Friends where he previewed a story he was going to do on Fox News Sunday. Kilmeade asked him about an angle of it that everyone was reporting on, and when pressed, Wallace said something about "you can report about that on your little show, but I'm not talking about it on mine."

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Gotta agree with Chuck here. IF there ever was a dress code then it wasn't enforced on Greta. And someone could help me understand the importance of this stupid story by jotting down a quick list of women on other news channels (other than the uber-butch Maddow) who doesn't hew to the dress and heels "code" on TV.

Callahan, Chris Wallace did studiously avoid the FACT that it is reported that Obama taped everything in the Oval. He did dishonestly set up a question with the preamble about "Trump setting up a taping system..." which I found very disturbing. To deliberately ignore a report by a frequent Fox contributor that he was handed a transcript of a just-concluded interview with Obama (and Dan Pfeiffer explicitly said they "record everything") just to set up an anti-Trump talking point disgusted me.

Chris ain't Tony Snow. Chris is a paid-up member of the DNC-Media complex riding the nevertrump train.

Unless their dress was determined by force (e.g. legal obligation), then it was their choice. It seems like NYMAG's report is a case of a social liberal who wants to have her baby and abort it, too, while crying bigot all they way down. Normal people would recognize the order is choice, then conception, and respond on principle (e.g. human rights). The principle in this story is that there is a reasonable and practical standard of "appropriate" within context.

Naked News has been kept afloat by a Russian millionaire/billionaire for some time now. He was featured in a cable show a few years ago that showed behind-the-scenes when they were trying to come up with new ideas to keep it alive. NN was one of the biggest hits in the early days (circa 2001) of the internet when most people had dial-up. One of the things that made it stand out was having newsreaders like Victoria Sinclair, who could have worked for any TV news show. They didn't employ strippers that couldn't read from a teleprompter. Then, something like 16 million people visited daily. It never made the transition to paid subscriptions. The Russian was shown teleconferencing with the Toronto people from Moscow prior to his visit.

It will be nice when Fox and the rest of the Oligarch owned media are fully dead. Do people realize that pewdiepie has an order of magnitude more viewers than any of these networks and makes more money than any of the on air talent? Even Rush Limbaugh has more listeners every day than any of these networks have viewers.

Fox will sink to the levels of CNN and MSNBC. The major networks will follow shortly thereafter as they don't have any viewers under the age of 65. Good riddance.

I think that the thing, with me, that sticks out about Fox is the number of women it has working for it in front of the camera, most of whom are decently good looking. Probably more than the other cable news shows combined. They seem to have a huge stable, and it skews female. And, the females tend to be more accomplished than the males, at least at the on air, entry level. A lot of attorneys. Or, as I would say, if I want to be hit, as a sexist, "lawyerettes".

Interesting thought - which show do you tend to see the most thigh on Fox News? My guess, it is most likely "Outnumbered", which runs at noon Eastern time, and, thus, is primarily aimed at a female audience. A thinking woman's "View" or "Talk". You can also detect the female orientation by the women happily talking over each other - like women do a lot more of in real life than men do. And, the premise of the show, of one guy outnumbered by 4 bright, attractive women (ok, not sure that Ms McCain is that bright, and is a bit pudgy), all showing a lot of thigh, sitting around him on a circular sofa.

Much ado about nothing. If you want news, you can read it, in newspapers and magazines, or on the web. If you want news with video, you can get that on the web too. If you prefer to have the news read to you, you can listen to the radio. Why would you watch news on TV? Because you prefer to have the news read to you by good-looking women wearing revealing outfits.

"The Path to 9/11" followed a decadal development through several administrations that may work as a miniseries. The real mystery is why the modern press is suppressing the 30 second elevator speech that preceded and coincided with invasion of Libya, Syria, Ukraine, etc., and the forcing of catastrophic anthropogenic immigration reform for non-profit profits, democratic gerrymandering, and plausible cover-up.

Hannity is an outlier on his own network.

Shep Smith (their only real "anchor") is avowedly anti-Trump.

So many "contributors" are semi-never-Trump establishment types: Dana Perino, Charles Krauthammer, Rich Lowry, Sandra Smith, Meghan McCain, etc. Prior to being sacked, O'Reilly had been a Trump-skeptic while keeping a neutral stance (what an idea!). And of course every left-of-center regular and contributor (Juan, Bob, etc.) except maybe Geraldo, has been rabidly anti-Trump.

The Fox & Friends crew has been fairly pro-Trump, but then he did used to appear on their show every Monday morning. (And that was when I stopped watching them.) But the general zeitgeist of FNC is Establishment. Not eGOP but plain old DC-centric Establishment. It oozes from Chris Wallace. It suffuses the headlines and chiron graphics, and thei topics are clearly driven by "What did the NYT write today?"

We need a conservative channel.
