"I felt that, in that moment, he was being typically Donald, which is performing and shocking. Almost like Andrew Dice Clay, the stand-up comedian."

"Does he really do the things that he's saying or is that his act? And in Donald's case, I equated it that way. When he said what he said, I'd like to think if I had thought for a minute that there was a grown man detailing his sexual assault strategy to me, I'd have called the FBI."

Billy Bush speaks.

I think a lot of people don't get Trump's statements because they don't understand the humor. But why should they? They don't want to let him off the hook more than they don't want to look like they have no sense of humor.

There's the famous feminist punchline: That's not funny

I think it's important to perceive the humor, so you can understand why he says some of the weird things he does. You don't have to think it's funny or have a taste for that kind of humor, but you should understand that it is humor, unless you have some reason to want to stand on your obtuseness. It could serve some political purpose that you like, perhaps for yourself, perhaps for others. But if you can understand how a statement is humor and you engage in speech that treats it as if it is intended to be taken seriously because you find it useful for other people not to see the humor, you are a propagandist.

When this first came out last year, one of the commenters here had the best take.

It was the Donald trying to sound cool and fit in. But no one talks like that. Most men have, at one time or another, heard other men, or have themselves engaged in, crass talk about women. None of us have ever heard a man say they grab women by the pussy.

It's just an odd way to say something.

traditionalguy said...

A trash talk in a private Hollywood environment demands witty sayings about the subject of sexy young women who come to seek rich men.

Taking that secret tape recording and pretending the NBC guys got a public statement about women from the President of the USA , means that you have lost your mind.

Yeah, a 60 year old man bragging about grabbing women by the pussy and getting away with it because he is famous, or trying to fuck a married woman (when he is also married), is just hilarious.

I guess you were sufficiently impressed by his ability to read from a teleprompter this past weekend that you are now back on the "defend Trump for anything" train.

So, Billy Bush tapes Trump without his knowledge 13 YEARS AGO saying something crude in a private conversation. Some how the tape doesn't surface till October 2016, just when it can do maximum damage to Trump. In fact, most people at the time thought Trump was finished.

Now Bush is back in the "news" giving us his dumb opinion that Trump is just a provocateur and didn't engage in "locker room" talk because no one talks like that in Bush's locker room. The stupidity of the statement is unbelievable.

And somehow this surfaces just when Trump is overseas and getting some good press.

This isn't fake news - its just dumb news. And another set up.

What about the statement is humorous. Please explain the humor to me. Apparently, I am too obtuse to find the statement humorous under any circumstances.

And the reason Andrew Dice Clay's fifteen minutes of fame was mercifully short (and I realize he is still eking out a living with his shtick as a D-list celebrity) is that once you got past the shock value, people (at least people who had matured past an eighth grader's definition of humor) realized Andrew Dice Clay was not funny, but actually rather pathetic and a hack.

Well, some of it may be funny.

But what was so funny, about claiming that he was sending his own private investigators to Hawai'i, to find out about the Obama birth certificate? What was funny, really, about trolling everyone via the National Enquirer about Ted Cruz's dad? What was so funny about saying, "I prefer people [unlike Lt. John McCain] who weren't captured"?

That latter one wasn't even original Trump humor. It was banally ripped-off humor, from our old friend Al Franken. Who Trump no doubt heard, or heard about, and remembered and then plagiarized the line.

I sort of agree with Althouse that a lot of this is intended by Trump as humor. Which only shows what a nasty person he is, deep-down, with a sense of humor that is rooted in, and permanently stuck in, teenage military school days.

This is a rare thing. I'm not sure you can call it a skill, it is more a type of personality. You can get angry about something or other, that is easy enough, but genuine virtue in this matter of evaluating public affairs is to attempt to be like Thucydides or Edward Gibbon.

Lost in all the fake outrage from liberals who supported Bill's slut shaming wife is that Trump was not talking about women, he was talking about gold digging whores.

And we were new money, nowhere near as wealthy as Trump. So I'm sure he had it worse with a the celebrity groupies.

So let's talk about why so many women are gold digging whores. There are some funny prank vids online showing girl next door types rejecting losers... until they see him hop into his Lamborghini. Then they are trampling each other begging to be grabbed by their pussy.

I'm on a Melville kick, and have been reading and rereading a lot in Moby-Dick and in literary criticism of it. MD is absolutely full of humor -- some of it dated, and not always that funny, but it's packed full of it. And yet the academic commentary is insufferable -- OMG Gay! OMG Racist! OMG Eevil Capitalist!. I mean for God's sake, the book has fart jokes. It has a whole chapter about a seven-foot-long penis. Ishmael routinely makes fun of intellectuals all through the book, as should we in life.

The Left has "pro-choice" ethics.

When Bill Clinton actually grabbed Monica Lewinsky by the pussy (consent given) and stuffed a cigar in it, they turned the other way. Why? Because Clinton was their man.

When Donald Trump talked about "grabbing pussy," the Left went apeshit. Why? Because Hillary was their gal, and Trump was in her path.

In circumstance 1, they chose option A.

In nearly identical circumstance 2, they chose option B.

Why? Because the quest for political power is a heluva lot more important than any pussy grabbing. Indeed, it depends on whose pussy is being grabbed -- in theory and in practice.

That's how the Left rolls.

@Chuck,

Resorting to machine gun, off-topic, rhetorical questions does not an argument make.

"But what was so funny, about claiming that he was sending his own private investigators to Hawai'i, to find out about the Obama birth certificate?"

Yep, a mistake. Obama and the Dems capitalized on this error. The whole birther stuff was a stupid mistake. Obama was born in Hawaii, no doubt. Off-topic, though.

"What was funny, really, about trolling everyone via the National Enquirer about Ted Cruz's dad?"

Too obscure. Nobody cares about this. Cruz is a big boy, and tried to fight back, but he lost anyway. Still, he is talented and young enough to become Prez some day, so no big deal.

"What was so funny about saying, "I prefer people [unlike Lt. John McCain] who weren't captured"?"

Dumb comment, but so what? McCain is a big boy and can fight back. That Trump is picking on high level peers (Obama, Cruz, McCain), actually proves that he is not a bully. He, literally, is picking on folks his own size.

I'd say your citations, Chuck, don't support your claims.

More so, actions speak much, much, much greater than words. The Dems are obsessed with pointing out remarks that violate some PC speech code, and then voting the offender off the island.

What people don't like about it is that it is a truth we don't like. Women are "superficial" when it comes to their reproductive choices. They are willing to give everything at the chance of reproducing with highly successful men.

Now, let's not make value judgments. I'm wondering what I would let Megan Fox do to me if she wanted to, and it's probably a lot of stuff. Or just about any hot woman I see on TV. Or even not so hot women on TV. Or really, . . .

People are angry with Trump because he told a truth we don't want to accept.

Billy was part of the in-crowd who got caught up in Trump's statement. If it was as patently offensive as they needed it to be, Bush could not survive not having filed a police report. And if it was "locker room talk" and nothing more, then it wasn't as patently offensive as they needed it to be.

We now hear Bush saying it wasn't locker room talk but it wasn't patently offensive. And now we'll see what happens to that trial balloon so his people can adjust the next one.

Eventually he'll be back on the red carpet interviewing Mel Gibson with the appropriate level of contempt.

Brando said...

Ann, you're forgetting what that whole "Billy Bush on a bus" thing was really about. It was a convenient excuse for Trump's reluctant supporters to drop him when it was looking bad for his campaign and they were afraid it would drag them down in their reelection races. I doubt there's a single person who was perfectly fine with Trump but changed their mind when they heard that tape--rather, it was people worried that he never "pivoted" in the general election, and were seeing that he was polling below them in their respective states and districts, and needed a handy excuse to say "now, I have to bail on him." Many (such as Jason Chaffetz) used the "I can't face my daughter now!" complaint, to make it seem extra "real".

But in reality, what was it but the usual bragging from Trump about how well he does with women? He wasn't even really saying "I do this even though those women don't want me to!" It was just the use of the word "pussy" and the weirdness of "grabbing" said pussy that made the statement stand out, and gave the wavering GOP the excuse to retract their endorsements.

If you want people to judge you by the content of your character, rather than by your [class] diversity, then it's probably a bad idea to wear a pussy on your head, to color your complexion, or to drape an unworthy child on your arm.

Anyway, I refuse to bow down before [class] diversitists, female chauvinists, and congruency makers for political progress and democratic leverage.

I agree that "bad jokes are still bad jokes" but there is the tag line - " bad in the eyes and ears of the beholder." And in the case of Donald, his personality takes definite form reminiscent of his character. He responds emotionally in almost all situation, exactly what you would expect from an adolescent. Predictably, these responses are habitual and automatic. He first reacts with anger if he believes that he has been attacked personally, a condition brought on by his solipsistic condition. He is a slave, forever and always, to his own feelings.

It's bullshit and hyperbole and expected to be understood as bullshit and hyperbole.........There's another moral issue here. Both Billy Bush and Trump were in the employ of NBC at the time of the conversation. They had a reasonable expectation of privacy and, moreover, a reasonable expectation that their employer would not take active steps to destroy their careers and reputations by releasing a tape of a private conversation........Bush got a good pay day out of it, probably for the NDA as much as anything, but it was a cold act of betrayal on NBC's part. Also, I can't help but wonder why this important revelation was released not during the primaries but during the general election. Trump and Bush don't look particularly good, but NBC looks especially despicable and manipulative.......If Obama or Hillary said something stupid off mic what are the odds NBC would rush to bring it to the attention of the American public.

When the net worth is much higher, lots more women reach their "stripper" level, willing to put up with quite a bit for the money train. This is a typical case of the depravity of modern US politics.

The matters truly in question - the size and power or the state and its agencies, economic policy, international strategy, the nature of the polity itself (via immigration, corruption, etc.), the long term decline of enterprise and innovation, are fought over in an arena of trivialities.

This is really quite a strange thing. In most countries their open political arguments are much closer to genuine matters at issue, a clash of interests in the open. And I mean even in poor countries with democratic politics.

Here the battle over interests is avoided, and all that is discussed and argued over is, well, dumb things.

This is of course a propaganda technique, to displace the battlefield of discourse to somewhere favorable to the propaganda machine, to fixate on an inconsequential detail while obfuscating the big picture. The Soviets, for instance, very early figured that they would do poorly in their ideological war on the field of, say, median standard of living, where Marx laid out the arena. That was why the argument was displaced to matters where there were no objective criteria, hence the exploitation of (non-Marxist) emotional identity politics and all the slew of issues of the new left.

Its easy to understand professional propagandists that do this, it is after all their job. It is a little difficult to understand other people though. A reasonable approach to their own interests would seem to dictate a preference for rational discourse, if one is to have a discourse at all.

Stretching it in the other direction, I could read it as a wistful complaint about the "Access Hollywood" environment.

Brookzene: : That's fair. But don't you agree that "They like it" is probably a very poor defense of Trump compared to "I don't think he did it."

It beats the hell out of your poorly constructed house of innuendo leading to (another!) charge that Trump is guilty of something with no evidence.

Physician heal thyself.

Or don't.

Whatever.

I don't know if he did or not. I don't know if Trump was lying or not. If he was telling the truth then he probably did assault some women.

Yes, but I find it hard to believe that anyone actually thought he was going around physically grabbing women in such a manner. Well except for Inga maybe. It was obviously a mixture of hyperbole and metaphor. Pretending to have the vapors over it was what you did if you were already a Hillary supporter. Or Trump hater.

As I said earlier, this is a guy from Brooklyn whose family was working class when he grew up. With money, but still working class. People who go door to door collecting money from deadbeat tenants as a teenager may have slightly different sensibilities than those whose parents interviewed to get them into the best pre-school possible so that they may one day enter the hallowed halls of Harvard. Just saying.

As I recall there were at least some women who said he did. I don't know if it happened or not. It was enough for me to know he had bad character, that was indisputable and enough. Whether he actually assaulted women...?

No, we get more Trump because there is a rising number of stupid people who just like to be entertained and their prejudices reaffirmed."

Good. You just keep on thinking that and calling them stupid.

That's a great strategy! It will work wonders for you!

If he was telling the truth when he said what?
