I'm looking for the headline that makes it easiest to resist clicking to find out what political statements were made last night at the Grammys.

And the winner is: "Celebrities Voice Their Opinions About President Trump, Politics at the 2017 Grammys."

If you just want to know what pregnant-with-twins Beyoncé wore, go to Tom and Lorenzo:
They’ll be talking about her empowering, dazzling, beautifying, defiantly fecund performance for years – and rightly so.... This is not the kind of sentiment that tends to win over many Bey fans, but we’re never not going to roll our eyes a little at any pop star or celebrity who elevates herself to godhood. We’ll credit her for having true artistic and cultural reasons for doing this, though. It’s not solely about her ego.... This costume is stunning precisely because it directly references goddess figures and mythical tropes about them. It’s not about Beyonce commenting on the iconography; it’s about her becoming the iconography....
ADDED: I'd like to see a Venn diagram of people who adore Beyoncé's theatrical display of egoism and people who are appalled by Trump's theatrical display of egoism.

T and L needed to up the snark-o-mat a bit. They were too kind.

Where do I sign up for the high-paying job to write BS like that?!? Awesome.

Making Trump look humble, modest in comparison

That's a relief. Because it's important. And because it's quite interesting. So I'm looking forward to hearing their talking. For years.

defiantly fecund

Defying who? Planned Parenthood?

Apparently that "ancient" weird document called the Constitution, which the left has longed to re-imagine and fundamentally alter, is suddenly back in vogue on the left.

That should last about 15 minutes before the left returns to ignoring all that icky stuff create by Dead, White, European Males.

She looks like Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Bgates: agree, "defiantly fecund" is a keeper. Not yet endemic the way "fiercely independent" has become, but a real contender.

Is there a consensus on pronunciation here? "Feh'-cund" or "Fee'-cund"? This should be sorted out quickly, before the meme takes off.

So, I clicked over to T Lo since you felt it would be worthwhile.

But, ever since they announced that they would not be commenting on Melania or Ivanka or any other member of the Trump family (in contrast to never ending gushing over Lady Michelle), I avoid 'em. At one time, I clicked over every few days from the link you provide, but . . not worth my time now.

It's real brave to talk and act like a Lefty in front of a roomful of Lefties. The counterculture totals one now. The singer in the MAGA dress that they've just threatened.

bgates said...

Owen, to fit Beyonce (and Tom & Lorenzo), I should think "Fey-cund".

"Defying who? Planned Parenthood?"

Indeed. Teh traditional conservative position is that women should be pregnant. Barefoot is optional, but considering what passes for women's shoes, barefoot seems prudent, especially when pregnant.

Didn't watch the Grammy's, but the two take-home points were:

1. Trump is bad
2. America is racist for picking Adele over Beyonce.

I did like Joy Villa and her MAGA gown though. There's a gal with guts and humor and self-confidence.

This, by the way, is the Dominant Culture, whose creators we rubes are supposed to be happy to rule over us.

Defiantly fecund is better left to the imagination—at least after the first trimester.

I don't get Beyonce.

I only watched Adele's tribute to George Michael-she was very good.

From comments over there:

I'm LIVING for woke Beyonce (and I'm not even a Beyoncé fan)

I am totally a Beyonce fan, but I love her evolution, too, so damn much. It's like she's bringing us deeper and deeper inside her experience as a woman, as a black woman, and I love watching her assume her Queendom. She deserves it and she fulfills the role beautifully.

snort

Who are these people?!

I Have Misplaced My Pants said...

Why does she "deserve" her "Queendom?" What does that even mean?

@ I Have Misplace My Pants

If they had said she deserves a condom it would make more sense. A little late but I would get the joke.

"I don't get Beyonce."

Why not? Isn't she another big grand diva or some kind of playing with that old tradition.

She's a goddess. She's telling you that. Why do you reject her when you accept other female performers who operate in that mode?

To me, the best answer is that she's too closely connected to a man. She needs to be bereft of a man for the psychology of loving the diva to work.

Just a theory.

Would you feel different if her husband were very attractive?

Birkel said...

Althouse,
Individual tastes being what they are, attempts to distill them into reason are impossible. You cannot reason somebody into a position they didn't reason themselves into, as the kids say. I'm a little bit country. She's a little bit rock and roll.

Personally, I reject Beyonce because of her support for racialized and illiberal politics. It has little to do with her singing, dancing or acting. Rather, I accepted her message that I was not her target market and will spend my dollars elsewhere.

That's unfair, Professor; no one would ever expect to see Beyonce at the White House. I mean, what kind of a President would lower himself to the level of some talk show celebrity or YouTube "star"? It's unthinkable.

Here's Barstool Sport's take. Plenty of snark to go around.

My distaste for Beyonce goes back to her Destiny's Child days. I remember them giving an interview where Beyonce specifically talked about how they wanted to make wholesome, empowering music for girls and they were careful to not be too provocative in their stage show (I think she said something like "we might show a little stomach but not too much cleavage, or cleavage but not too much leg--we keep it classy"). The marketing of Desinty's Child at that time specifically contrasted those nice gals with dirty gangsta rap (also popular at the time). Godly, even (lots of crosses, talk about signin' in church, etc).

Their next album was not only raunchier but included a song about how they needed a "soldier," someone who's down with the streets, a criminal, someone who'll spend ill-gotten money on the girls & kill others. Oh, and also someone with large genitals--just to keep things classy. The song featured felons TI and Lil' Wayne, and of course by conflating street gangsters (the kind who routinely murder innocent kids in Chicago every few days) with actual soldiers it insulted members of our armed forces.

I thought it was pretty shitty to talk up your pro-girl, feminist church side and then sell albums with your ghetto fabulous criminal-loving message. So I've disliked Beyonce since then. She has some catchy tunes, mostly written by other people, and is a good dancer/choreographer. Otherwise: overrated. Residual bad feeling, too, for Jay-Z's respectability (he of the drug slingin' past, naturally).

I'll paste the chorus:
If your status ain't hood
I ain't checkin' for him
Betta be street if he lookin' at me
I need a soldier
That ain't scared to stand up for me
Known to carry big things
If you know what I mean
If your status ain't hood
I ain't checkin' for him
Betta be street if he looking at me
I need a soldier
That ain't scared to stand up for me
Gotta know to get dough
And he betta be street

Ugh, more of this Beyoncé nonsense everywhere because apparently we all must worship her. Not "hey this is some good music, give it a listen" but "bow down and respect how relevant she is". As in "OMG, they didn't give Beyoncé a certain award, look how irrelevant the grammys are!" as if anyone gives a crap about the grammys anyway.

It won't get better with age, either. When she's 90 and creaking out on the stage we'll be hearing how much she redefined age, and she can have it all, and she's so relatable, and we must worship her more.

There's never been a better time to retreat into old music than now.

pfffft. I am thinking of a much more direct point of hypocrisy on the left.

Has Trump stopped the oceans from rising yet?
