"Whether the Russians did or did not hack the voting of tonight’s SAG Awards, I look out on the million, or probably even a million and a half people in this room..."

"... and I say, this award is legitimate, and I won! I’m the winner, the winner is me — landslide!"

Julia Louis-Dreyfus accepting a SAG Award, under pressure to go political and doing it pretty well.

There's this thing about NYT, WaPo, and others not letting non-subscribers read their shit. I'm at the point where I float the mouse cursor over the link and don't even go if it's at a pay-only site. Their stuff is not worth green money.

WSJ, too. Man, talk about ruining a brand.

I couldn't even watch the SAG awards. I knew they'd be full of stupid politicalization. They are taking one of my pleasures from life, and I am wondering if I'll be able to watch the Oscars or not.

MayBee said...

Having said that, I saw one clip and Winona Ryder was doing the same faces that Hillary Clinton made at her balloon drop.
I wish someone would do a mash-up.

Not funny. Stale. Ridiculous.

The irony here is that her show, "Veep" is doing a great job poking fun at the Washington establishment. It's probably the best show on politics since 'K Street'.

Sydney said...

Heh. She is pretty darned funny. And that show, "Veep," is also very funny without ever letting you know which party they are making fun of. They make fun of all of them.

In jokes for the in crowd--not that it matters since like the vast majority of Americans, I wasn't watching.

Not too bad. I always liked SNL's mocking of Reagan. But that came on the heels of their mocking Carter and was followed by their mocking of Clinton. Today's SNL comes on the heels of the GREAT OBAMA COMEDY FREEZE in which the closest thing to a joke was a skit on their own adoration of their god. That era has wounded political comedy deeply. Conservatives like me simply quit watching.

At any rate, now they're free to mock the president again. It just is being viewed by half the country.

I opened up Althouse and the first three posts were this one, "If you have always suspected that 'sex addict' is celebrity shorthand ...", and "It's a good day to think about Fred Korematsu." So good. So good.

Yeah, keep doing this Hollywood. I bet it works out great for you. You don't need people to watch what you produce.

As Glenn Reynolds says, time to roll back the Hollywood tax cuts.

And it's also a great forum for the Stars to deliver FAKE NEWS and stir up a bunch of shit.

Lilly Tomlin: (One ringy-dingy, Two ringy-dingy)

"I don’t wanna make this comparison, I’m not making it any way, but the Nazis, they changed the laws if they didn’t agree with them. They just changed them and they could do whatever they wanted.”

“We need to be vigilant and we need to agree when he may have a good idea or she may have a good idea, and we should be resistant when they don’t. Oh my gosh, I feel like I’m talking to someplace in Germany many decades ago.

OK, but go ahead and make the stupid comparison anyway even if you didn't want to. Make it twice! They know the public is stupid because we still spend money on their shit.

Trump is not changing laws. He is enforcing laws that were purposefully ignored and unenforced. He is also operating within the authority of his predecessors.

Really, though....WHEN are these overpaid celebrity big mouths going to put their money where their mouths are?? A lot of them have multiple houses and millions in the bank...when they start adopting these "families" and housing them...I will start to listen to them...In the meantime you have hypocrites like Mark Zuckenberg putting up a HUGE wall around his property in Hawaii, against Hawaiian peoples wishes...

Julia won the first award, about 5 minutes in. Once this screed started, I turned it off.

Me, too. I think the magazines and newspapers are inside their bubble and they don't get any input from the other side.

I used to subscribe to the LA Times because my wife liked to read it but I quit since we moved. Now, I can't read anything so I don;t. When I did read, I noticed that half the comments on the stories I read disagreed with the editors. I doubt that had any effect as I doubt they read comments.

It's also interesting to me that Richard Fernandez, my go-to guy on most foreign stories is now mostly on facebook.

Michael Totten, who I also like a lot, is going deeper into the NeverTrump mode and I may soon have to drop reading him. Most of his commenters now are crazy lefties.

Where is the evidence that she was "under pressure to go political"?

Does it ever occur to these people that if Trump really was like Hitler, they'd all have been shot by now?

And I wonder... who did the NeverHitler folks in 1930's Germany compare Hitler to?

Attila the Hun, maybe?

It's Hollywood. What water is to fish, liberalism is to Hollywood.

Beloved Commenter AReasonableMan said...

This is not evidence. She could have just recounted some funny anecdote and been done. Why is it not more reasonable to imagine that she was reflecting her own political views.

I thought everyone's a winner and she's being tacky!

Look at what happened to celebrities who temporarily agreed to perform at the trump inauguration and were bombarded with death threats idiot.

Re outrage dilution, I see she is still talking about the crowd size at the inauguration.

At least she is not lying about it. Trump really did say it looked like a million to a million and a half people.

Beloved Commenter AReasonableMan said...

But she wasn't at Trump's small inauguration, she was in a setting where she could have just been funny and gone home. The most obvious interpretation of her behavior is ignored in favor a more tortured one (no pun intended).

Yeah, he didn't claim it was a million, he said it was a lot of people and "Looked" like a million to him.

Julie L.D. is another wealthy celebrity from a family of millionaires. I don't really care what her politics are. Compared to the newer celebrities she has an element of class. Which is isn't hard to achieve.

Are celebrities eventually going to be censured for NOT making political statements?

William said...

The Veep show is very funny, and I give her credit for making her point in an amusing way......If I were God, I would put musicians in the lowest circle of hell. It's not just that they're wrong, but that they're simultaneously self indulgent and self righteous in their fatuity. Actors are down there too, but they're not quite as awful. I would give comedians the highest circle among the damned. They say many foolish things, but, on more than one occasion, I have heard a comedian mouth an unpalatable truth in public.

William said...

Julia Louis-Dreyfus was the daughter of a billionaire. I presume she had a happy childhood, and she was obviously good looking. I wonder by what dynamic such a woman becomes a comedian.

"I am wondering if I'll be able to watch the Oscars or not."

Used to be (DECADES ago) the Oscars were must see TV. Have not been for a long time.

Why watch?

I have not seen, nor is it likely I will see, many of the nominated flicks. If I want to see a movie, an Oscar nomination means little in my choices. There are plenty of sites that offer critiques of the movies.

I can see the pretty dresses, as if I made THAT a high priority, on line with little effort.

Do I want to hear the speeches? Nope, not even the non-political ones. I can recall a few that were touching or otherwise valuable. But those are the very few needles in a very large haystack.
