Live-blogging the Trump Inauguration.

1. We've been watching for a couple hours, but I think it's time to get the blog going.

2. I'll say what I suppose everyone is saying — I haven't looked — Melania's outfit is delightfully perfect. The color, the gloves, the length of the sleeves, the high cut of the jacket revealing the slimly columnar torso, the wrapped up, folded over neckline. Love it!

3. There's a scene we here at Meadehouse have watched 3 times and discussed at length. I think the title is: Delivery of the Tiffany Pizza. Donald and Melania drive up to the Obama's house. Donald gets out of the car and amiably greets the Obamas as Melania emerges from the far side of the car and walks around to the steps, and she's carrying a horizontal, flat box — the size and shape of a pizza box — and we know by the color and the white bow that it's from Tiffany. Melania, smiling warmly, joins the group, and she hands the box to Michelle. Michelle reacts as if a box of crap has been foisted on her, and she looks around as if she's truly pissed to be stuck with the box. No one off camera comes forward, presumably because they're all instructed to stay out of the photo op. The 2 saluting military men can't stop saluting. They're not like apartment doormen or hotel bellhops. They can't wrangle the packages. Michelle could pretend to appreciate the gift and hold it in a discreet sideways position. It's not really pizza. It's not as though the cheese will slide off if she turns it vertical. Obama sees he must cater to his wife's emotional needs, and he, in his last moments as President of the United States, walks over, gets the package, and takes it inside the house, and then he comes back out to line up for the big, historical photo.

4. Kellyanne Conway arrives at the Capitol. I saw her earlier on one of the morning shows and thought her majorette outfit could use a hat, so I'm glad to see she's got a nice red hat to complete the costumery. [ADDED: I'm seeing a closeup of the buttons on her coat. They seem to be the heads of lionesses. I think of what Donald Trump said about her last night: "There is no den she will not go into."]

5. Hillary Clinton arrives at the Capitol. She's wearing a nice champagne-colored pantsuit and puts on a matching light overcoat. From off-screen, some reporter yells out, "Madame Secretary, how does it feel to be here today?" Another one says: "How are you feeling, Madame Secretary?" What's she supposed to say? I'll say it for her: How the fuck do you think it feels? We overhear the CNN commentators giggling and one of them — maybe Axelrod — mutters "probably come up with a different question."

6. Axelrod says he finds it "irritating" that some Democratic Party members of Congress are boycotting the inauguration. When Trump takes the oath he will be President for all of us and there's business we need to do as a country, and we need to do it together, he says.

7. The Supreme Court Justices — all 8 of them — are here, arriving together, all in robes. Justice Breyer is carrying a ziploc bag of supplies. Alongside him is Ruth Bader Ginsburg, with a brown-colored lace collar. Is that a deliberate variation from white?! Remember she's on record having called Trump "a faker" with "no consistency about him." The Chief Justice looks determined — do not botch the oath. Clarence Thomas — who's doing the oath for Pence — looks happy. Kennedy and Alito seem spry. Elena Kagan seems fine. Sonia Sotomayor, perhaps rather weary, lumbering.

8. Trump and Obama emerge from the White House. They both look grim. Grumpy. CNN has a split screen so we also see Bill and Hillary Clinton arriving at the Capitol. They look grim too. Oh, no, now Bill is smiling. He's on camera, living in the moment, looking good. Good old Bill.

9. "She looks stunning. She looks great. She's stunning in defeat. She looks great." Meade is watching Hillary walk through the halls out toward the inaugural stage.

10. Oh, that steep stairway! So great that no one falls.

11. Trump swivels toward the camera. Looks right at us. He's waiting inside while Pence comes out. Pence has to shake many hands — Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, all the Trump ladies, etc. etc.

12. Trump is announced. He walks out. Gives a thumbs up then an upraised fist. Kisses Melania. Kisses Michelle. Takes his place. Who's that lady standing behind him doing an iPhone video?

13. Shots of Trump include Barron, sitting right behind him. Barron looks as though he might be staring into an iPhone. He's corrected by his mother at one point. He yawns. He looks annoyed, even angry.

14. "And God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you..." The Bible reading seems to refer to Trump.

15. Clarence Thomas administers the oath to Mike Pence.

16. An ultra-smooth rendition of "America" by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

17. President Donald Trump. It's real now. It happened. Good luck, America!

18. Oh! The speech. I'd forgotten. We have a whole speech to go. "We are transferring power from Washington D.C. and giving it to you."

19. The theme: YOU. Today is "The day The People became the rulers of this nation once again... Everyone is listening to you now."'

20. "When you open your heart to patriotism, there is no room for prejudice."

21. Trump ends his speech and raises his fist. Waves it around in the air.

Effective capitalists capture and repurpose everything! And Trump is a master.

Trump has already repurposed populism and captured segments of the Bernie wing and brought back the Reagan Democrats and led Repubicans to this full control of government scenario.

Or, as Chuck would put it, this horrific position the republicans find themselves in.

When over a third of Democrat representatives boycott the peaceful transition of power, when Democrat mobs smash windows, vandalize cars, start fires and hurl rocks and concrete at police within blocks of the inaugural parade route, maybe its time we recognized that a majority of Democrat voters probably don't want a peaceful transition of power to Republicans.

There are probably millions of Trump voters who have come to realize this in their own lives over the last year, and who have taken steps to conceal their true allegiance in order to avoid loss of jobs/business and vandalism. I think we are far closer to open civil warfare than we have been in 100 years.

@robother, you would think that Democrats would have learned from the Scott Walker era in WI -- extended violence and protests do nothing to win people over to your cause.

These paid riots are a good teaching tool that needs to be seen by the pro sanctuary city/ open borders crowd.

When a public protest is 70% Americans and 30% provocateurs seeking a TV audience, very little happens.

But when you reverse the numbers and 30% Americans face a crowd that is 70% provocateurs seeking a violent, then all hell breaks loose. Soros, Inc. is counting on that.

Darcy and April Apple:

I lived in Boulder in the late 60s-mid 70s. Then in Denver for 13 years. Lots of homeless in both places even back then. In Boulder they were mostly zonked on a combination of STP (Angel Dust, mixture of LSD and horse tranquilizer and sundry other chemicals) and heroin. There was a loosely affiliated group of these so-called street people known as the STP Gang or some such. I was a bartender at the Sink and Tulagi on the Hill and had to deal with them all the time. Awful people.

In Denver the homeless hung out in what was then the city's skid row district, i.e. Larimer Square and below in what is now called Lo-Do. I think the Mission where they congregated is still there. I tended bar at a skid row dive on Larimer, when it still had skid row dives, and fed booze to the derelicts. They were a dangerous lot. One of them was a known serial killer. Everyone who worked on Larimer knew it and the police knew it too -- but no one could do anything about it. He was called "Indian John." He was a scary, demonic creature just to look at, scarier still because we know what he was and what he did: he preyed upon rummies and drunk prostitutes who hung out at the Mission. One day, however, he just sort of disappeared. No one knew what happened to him and no one cared.

If he trims some fat, gets us decent justices, that's a darn good term.

More like he thinks antagonizing Russia (or anyone) for no benefit to America is a net loss. I suspect Democrats believe mostly the same except they substitute Democrats for America, and since anti-Russia rhetoric energizes their core they believe the cost is acceptable.

This explains why they were so obsequious to Russia before recently (blaming first Bush and then Romney for any friction) but are now pretending to be the tough sheriff. Revealingly they only play tough sheriff to the townsfolk and never to the outlaws.

The Left these days are a lot like the Fundamentalists of the 20th century. They're posturing and outraged about cultural changes and think they still hold a moral sway over people, so that shaming and outrage will cause people to cower.

Shaming is very useful if used sparingly. But after a point, it becomes ignored.

That's why calling homosexuals sexual deviants and such had a reverse result. People adopted the labels, turned sexuality into an identity, and made major inroads into social change.

The very people who were disgusted by conservative Christians and who would laugh at the thought they had any influence in changing minds, are now using the exact same tactics and rhetoric.

There's a clear difference between screaming in pain and screaming because of a tantrum. Most people recognize the difference and the latter makes them more and more indifferent.

He is being agnostic. Agnostics are neutral on the existence of God. Neither doubting or believing. Same thing with LBGT. Agnostic about LBGT as in not taking sides.

Okay, so this is bullshit as surely as anything Trump has said.

Just no more Obama/Holder/Lynch/Jarrett/Democrat extremism on those issues. That's not "alt-right" that you are talking about. It's the President of the United States, and majorities in both houses of Congress.

You've got a long four years ahead of you.

Chuck, you have a trait I have observed in many very intelligent people. Having never experienced the bad side of town,or suffered a poor public school education, you occasionally miss the forest for the trees.
See, we all know Trump lied and conned his way into the White House. It was necessary to get the former Obama voters to stay home, or to vote against Hillary.
The man was going for the biggest prize in America, up against a gang of miscreants who have had decades of public exposure while lying, twisting, and spinning the truth. Obviously over his head, being only accustomed to middle school whoppers, he lacked the finesse of the billion dollar Clinton organization. That is why he resorted to grade school taunts while clearing the field of 15 other republican contenders.
You may have noticed his insults and lies regard Hillary were a step up/
Expect him to become so smooth while in office that even you will not be able to distinguish between the truth and a lie.
Meanwhile, you must be delighted in his cabinet choices, am I right?

Now things get serious.

New York Times: “Conflicts that for months have been theoretical are now about to become real — most immediately a possible challenge by the federal government. It owns the building that houses Mr. Trump’s hotel and has granted him a 60-year lease. From the moment he is sworn in as president at noon Friday, Mr. Trump may be in violation of that lease, given a provision that appears to prohibit federal elected officials from renting the Old Post Office building, the Pennsylvania Avenue landmark that houses the hotel, from the government.”

“Guests at the hotel include foreign diplomats and politicians who could be looking to curry favor with Mr. Trump — but even the act of paying their bills as they check out after the inauguration may open Mr. Trump to a challenge that he has violated the United States Constitution, which prohibits federal government officials from taking payments or gifts from foreign governments.”

Well, the Obamas made a few of their own protocol gaffes early in their administration, and also gave a few sinker gifts (remember when he gave the UK PM a bunch of movies, but in US, not UK format)?

So I don't think they have a lot of room to judge.

Well I was in D.C. today observing the "resistance" in action although it was a much smaller "resistance" than advertised. The "resistance' seems to specialize in breaking car and store windows and in setting very small fires in trashcans using their own signs as fuel. You may have seen said fire because there were a dozen or so photo "journalists" squeezing in to get a shot showing a fire of consequence along with the angry man burning his own signs. It was a sad fire actually, hardly a fire at all and it could easily have been stomped out but it burned out first. The "resistance" flamed out at that little intersection.

Oh, and the blocking of the interstate, that time honored social justice maneuver, was also flawlessly executed doubtless winning over hundreds of commuters on this Friday afternoon to the cause of the "resistance."

That above from the US foreign-public relations side.

From the US internal politics side, she is a valuable asset to the Republican party, also in large part for racial/gender/identity politics reasons.

UN Ambassador is a high profile job with national exposure; Haley is a valuable piece on the chessboard that needs national exposure. Governor of SC gives gravitas but few know or care about small state governors. People need to know who she is, all those cameras at international this and that in Kazakhstan or Paris. A few years of the UN and she will have "international" chops and would be high on the candidate list for anything, Senator, Sec State, or VP or President.

Here's my prediction: the rioting/violent protests will continue on Saturday during the Women's March.

Here's why -- today the protests were hampered by bad weather & the presence of a large, hostile crowd. Mostly, the violent protests occurred where the crowds weren't. On Saturday, the crowd will be "friendly" (i.e. not given to beating these clowns up if given the chance), mostly female, & large enough to be used as cover. Also, the weather will be better.

I imagine the DC cops are thinking the same thing & are keeping their guys on alert until at least Sunday.

We'll see if I'm right or not. It's just hard to tell the future, ya know?
