"How could I have this much hate spewing at me, and I haven't even done anything?"

"I guess it's not like those old days when political views were your own and you had freedom of speech. ... We live in a different time now and a decision to go and do something for America is not so clear-cut anymore."

Said Jennifer Holliday, who was going to to perform at the Trump inauguration. I'm completely unsurprised that she's been bullied into withdrawing.

The Stalinists are very good at show trials and making weak people perform public self-criticism.

Mustn't deviate from the leftist hive mind.

Remember, the Soviets claimed anyone who wanted personal freedom suffered from a mental disease and the entire western left sided with those Soviets.

Not much has changed.

This is how you get more Trump. The Progs are burning all remaining moral capital, and it seems to me the inevitable product of the way they see the world. They have no spiritual center except their belief in secular "progress," and thus politics is existentially important, and winning is essential. All of their emotional energy goes into winning, and hating with great self-righteousness whatever might oppose them. The world is black and white. The Two-Minute Hate is real.

But most of us aren't like that, and aren't ready to go there. So as they reveal themselves, and force us to choose, they marginalize themselves.

But it will take time and cost us all dearly.

Wait; I have so many questions about this.

First, I don't know who Jennifer Holliday is. A singer, obviously. Never heard of her. I also didn't know anything about "Oamarosa," the one-named individual who has been given employment in the Trump White House.

So let's try to get this straight; Jennifer Holliday was invited to perform at the Inauguration, and she accepted. Then, there was "an onslaught of criticism." Okay. I don't quite know how to quantify an "onslaught." But I know what criticism is. I get it here, all the time. Could be an "onslaught"; I don't know. Is a "tidal wave" more than an "onslaught."

So how exactly did an "onslaught of criticism" force Miss Holliday to retire from the proceedings? As far as I can tell, the technical description would be that she chose to decline, after having accepted, because as an entertainer in the pop culture world, the criticism wasn't worth the exposure she'd have gotten from doing the performance. A choice, on her part. Is that "bullying"?

Note well that have zero empathy with the critics of Jennifer Holliday. The usual lefty activists; racialists, LGBTQ radicals, etc. At the same time, I could never be a fan who turned on Jennifer Holliday, because I was never a fan of Jennifer Holliday in the first place. But no matter what, I won't even think of criticizing entertainers who appear in connection with the Inauguration. I recognize so few of them to begin with.

And, as I posted previously, I have nothing but contempt for these secondary boycotts of retailers, manufacturers and entertainers who in any way become associated with politically incorrect Republicans. The tactic is as dated as it is repugnant. And Capital University lawprof Bradley Smith summed it up very nicely for the WSJ editorial page:

Chuck said...

I call bullshit, Matthew. Not necessarily on the wisdom of Miss Holliday's commercial decision, but rather on the drama-victimhood of the whole thing. Which you seem to have bought into, entirely.

And yet, let's both agree that this is a major problem that is not limited to pop entertainment. Increasingly, as Holman Jenkins of the Journal has frequently noted (and written about quite brilliantly), corporate CEO's the world over have to deal with the same pressures. Almost every Fortune 500 company had gone to full LGBT benefits long before Obergefell based on concerted pressure from left-leaning media and LGBT interest groups.

On that note, it is profoundly weird to me that the LGBTQ "community" is seeming to go after Trump so hard. Including, it would seem, in this case with Jennifer Holliday. But let's face it; as Althouse has surmised, Trump is pro-gay and being cagey about it. Maybe they are pissed off about Mike Pence and Jeff Sessions' places in the Trump Administration, and a new Scalia on the Supreme Court.

rcocean said...

And does any of these show-biz crap matter anymore? We old fogeys can remember when we used to have a common pop culture. We had 3 Major TV networks, no internet, no cable TV, and handful of record companies and AM/FM radio stations. So we had pop singers and show-biz types that everyone knew, cause that was all we had.

But that hasn't been the case for 20 years. We have a fragmented culture, so why have some Pop singer or dancer perform that most of us have never heard of? Just get some unknown singer to do the "Columbia, Gem of the Ocean".

It is a matter largely of industrial culture and its membership in modern tribes.
J. Holliday is a Broadway performer. Broadway seems to be a small, insular world of producers, agents, "talent", and even audiences. All of whom apparently have a raging tribal hatred of D Trump, or rather of D Trumps voters, as they probably wouldnt have cared a bit if D Trump had hired J Holliday two years ago.
This is tribal war and some industries are tribally aligned. This is sonething I suspected years ago, from the consistent, targeted efforts the governments of NY and CA were using to drive manufacturing and agriculture away.

From Jennifer Holliday's signature song, "I am telling you I am not going." We are not missing much. She could deliver the song well in the 1980s but the years have taken their toll. Jennifer Hudson, who took over the lead role in Broadway's "Dreamgirls" after Halliday, does a much better job with the song.

While movie stars and singers have blessed with their political opinions for a long time, I think the Hollywood-DC nexus went into overdrive with the arrival of the Clintons in January 1993. I remember celebs like Streisand swanning into town for Billy Jeff's Inauguration and the excitement it created in DC. Washingtonians were babbling excitedly about seeing Spielberg or Hanks or some other star at the Palms. The gods are among us! It's like a homely high school girl who is thrilled because the handsome jock wants to take her to the prom.

Although the Reagans had a Hollywood background, they were not seen as glamorous, but as garishly excessive - because Republican. Remember the squawking about the cost of Nancy's clothes and new White House china? After Michele's multi-million dollar vacations, it sure seems quaint now.

The "liberals" are always easily cowed and absorbed into whatever the left drags them into.

Think of the libs/left pre-WWII where the leftist pro-Soviet line was "keep the US out of the war!!!" because Stalin had cut his deal with Hitler (Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact), then as soon Hitler invaded Russia Stalin sent out word and the US leftists, like robots, switched overnight to "Second Front Now!!".

The left has always been aligned with whatever totalitarian force wants to destroy the US. That's why the lefts support and defense of Islamic extremism is entirely predictable.

As was the lefts defense of all the Soviet backed western terrorist groups like the Baader-Meinhof's, Red Army Faction, Red Army Brigades, the fake "Palestinian" Liberation Organization, etc.

As surely as night follows day.

John Lewis showed genuine courage 50 years ago. That is not in dispute.

He then immediately joined the party that beat him. So there's that.

Lewis occupies one of the highest positions on the lefty/PC/Marxist totem pole of Victims: that of an African American who was present and a front and center participant in the Civil Rights struggle who was beaten by Southern white racist cops/dogs/water hoses etc on the path to achieving rights for blacks.

That gives him (in Nancy Pelosi's words) ABSOLUTE MORAL AUTHORITY on all issues forever.

It is understandable, given that, he would succumb to siren song of "I can never be wrong-dom" on any subject, period and that the left would use him that way: as the vanguard battering ram of the "Trump is not legitimate" faction.

In fact, if you listen to the MSM, they speak of Lewis in almost hushed and reverent tones even though he has pretty much become a tool. But hey, whatevs. I'm not concerned about that.

I'm much more concerned about the 5th column movement of establishment republicans who want to defang the conservative (and effective) base and work closely with dems to reestablish the establishment structure. Which necessarily requires the destruction of Trump and all his supporters.

snip: "One of Solzhenitsyn's most chilling stories concerned a birthday party for Comrade Stalin, held in a small, out-of-the-way town. Stalin was, of course, no where in sight, but still there were speeches and applause. Without thinking, the mayor of the town rose and exhorted his fellows to one last cheer for the evening to the honor of Stalin.

The applause continued for minutes without stopping and everyone was growing weary, but who would dare to be the first to stop clapping? As the labored applause wore on an old man collapsed. Finally the mayor allowed his arms to drop and the noise died. The next evening the mayor was sentenced to the gulag, and no charges were ever spoken against him. As he stepped into the train, a party official whispered into his ear, "Never be the first one to stop clapping.""

Or is she a victim of an unfair attack? Was she bullied? Or did she make a terrible mistake. I suggest that in this case they are mutually exclusive. She seems to have made both claims in the space of less than 24 hours. If part of the "bullying" was being forced to withdraw, AND the publication of a phony apology, let's just please be clear about that apology.

Pop culture is such a waste of time. Who knows what anybody is really intending to communicate? The language is so awful. "Imprecise" is not sufficiently disparaging; it is insulting to the intelligence of readers.

Maybe they can get Bianca Ryan to sing it. She was better than both of them. And 11 years old.

Where are you going to run to when you lose Texas?"

A point Mark Steyn has been making since at least the early 90s is that the US is the refuge of last resort. The world is getting smaller and smaller and, as he says, "Where you gonna go when the US has become just like the rest of the world?"

He also makes that point about Canadian healthcare frequently. Lots of Canadians get their healthcare in the US because it is not available in Canada.

Now, maybe even the US is closing in. We are not quite to the point of "Where are you going to run when you lose Texas?" but we were certainly headed that way.

We may still be but at least now there is a glimmer of hope that this will change.

True. The United States is the Number One medical tourism destination in the world. And nothing about that statistic bothers me.

At the same time, many Americans find it in their financial interest, to go outside of the U.S. for some elective procedures. This "list" of places for the best healthcare in the world shouldn't be taken too seriously, at least not for overall care. If I get sick, I pray that I will be in the U.S. at the time.

But this business of medical tourism is highly selective, based on a patient's wealth and income, your insurance, your national citizenship, your nation's national healthcare planning, etc.

https://internationalliving.com/2017/01/4-countries-best-healthcare-world/

I've always found it laughably disingenuous when Donald Trump spouts off about how he's going to repeal Obamacare, and replace it with something wonderful and fantastic. Something that we'll all love, and find amazing. Who is so stupid as to believe that? Mind you, I have no doubt that we could improve national healthcare. With Republican-led (and hopefully, in the end, bipartisan) reforms.

But I have no expectations that Donald Trump, who once praised the Canadian system that you are now ridiculing, knows the first damned thing about how to fix it. Congressional Republicans will do it, and I hope and expect that they will proceed with great caution.

On the other hand the usual left-wing persons who show up do not attempt a proper argument. They do not discuss in good faith. They assert a point, usually through quoting something grabbed from their information stream, and do not engage the following rebuttal, but thereafter go to insults and ad hominems, or sneers. CNN breaking news alert from Russia: The NFL team named Seahawks from Seattle in the Russian territory of Alaska, that extends south to the Russian River in Sonoma County, California has been cheated by the KKK's Redneck Falcons, who obviously were the ones on Steroids and Growth Hormones released to Trump by Putin.

Exactly. "Trump is awful!" "Trump said this!" "Trump did that!" True (sometimes), but it could be worse. It could be worse.

Stil mystified as to why the gay community in particular was key in this bit of lefty groupthink. What mean things has Trump done to the gay community?

As I hypothesized above, it's because LGBLT leadership is allied with Muslims. Why? The only commonality is anti-Christian sentiment. Myopic? Of course it is.

Query: Will it be a conflict of interest if Trump's kids running the Family businesses buy CNN and fire all of the Clinton apparatchiks?

In any event, expect more dem/Deep state rumors to be launched this week along with accelerated trolling online in conjunction with expanded "heated" reporting by the MSM all leading up to the inauguration.

The desperation on the left is palpable. If you've seen Robert Reich on MSNBC or CNN the last several days you would see that he was continuous and embarrassing screeching mode.

It was beautiful.

CNN appears to be ground zero for the attempted media/Deep State driven coup so if you get a chance wander over there every now and again to see how they are working with this hoax to spin it.

Should be very interesting.

"LGBLT leadership is allied with Muslims"

I recently had it hypothesized to me by a younger person, who is more in touch with the thought currents of today, that the big fear on the LBGTetc. side was that Trump == Reagan, and Reagan maliciously let all the gays die of AIDS, therefore Trump would let all the gays die of whatever the next bad disease would be. (No, he didn't seem convinced by this either.)

Hillary never sincerely conceded. She has a lot to answer for. She dragged her party down the road to defeat to serve her own sense of personal entitlement.

Oh, for chrissakes, drama queen, we're making comments blog not nailing the 92 theses to the door in Wittenburg. Unlike being an Trump supporting entertainer threatened with a very real loss of employment or a business woman threatened with a boycott for giving a contribution for Trump, it takes no bravery whatsoever to post here. Nobody is going to fire chuck or you. Unlike that guy in Chicago who was beaten for being a Trump supporter, nobody is going punch you out because you don't like Trump.

The only person here who has run any personal risk for expressing their political opinions in our hostess, who was threatened by intolerant Madison leftists during the Walker recall.

So stop acting like you are some sort of noble martyr braving - well, what, exactly? Drago's deadly barbs?

If people are nice to me, I'm nice to them. I'd rather have constructive conversations, but if people are nasty, I can dish right back. If you fall apart when some stranger says something about you on the Internet, you might try toughening up a bit.

Louisa, the Republicans were responsible with their computer systems and the Democrats were not, and the Russians, plus who knows who else, had much opportunity to cause the havoc that has been caused by Wikileaks, etc.
So, no, I am really not concerned with connections/problems between Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin and Russia, no matter what: it is much preferred instead of seeing Putin dealing with Hillary Clinton --who would have been the most God-awful President ever.

Louisa, The most REAL danger going on this week is the subject of this post, but you don't want to talk about that. The most REAL danger going on for this country this very week is the precedent that entertainers are being bullied and intimidated so fully -- apparently by the LGBTQ jackboots (why dear ones, do you choose this road of "BakeTheCake!" zealoutry, so sad) -- that freedom of expression is being shut down.

. . . By those who call themselves "Liberals" and "Democrats"

It is so hideous. The very thing they project onto this fascinating man, Donald Trump, as some demon that will force all kinds of evil on others. In fact, That is what they are willing to do, here and now. Force all kinds of evil on others for their wrong stand.

Hideous.

(Godspeed, America)

I think that this is true. A few days before the election, NPR was interviewing voters about their choice for prez and letting them give their reasons for their choice.
One person they interviewed was an openly gay man from Atlanta. He was voting for Hillary (of course!), and part of his reasoning was the Pulse nightclub massacre. He blamed it on homophobia. He never mentioned the word Islam. He thought that the shooting was the result of homophobia and slack gun control laws.
I think that driving a homophobic and gun control narrative was the reason behind Lynch's early refusal to release the 911 transcripts. All that Mateen spoke about in the calls was his allegiance to ISIL and its Caliph, and the US bombings in Syria. The 911 operator tried to get Mateen to give his name, his location, etc., but Mateen refused to be driven off message. All he would say, again and again, was that he was killing people in revenge for the US bombing of ISIL in Syria and Iraq, and the bombing death of an ISIL cleric. Mateen never mentioned gays. He only wanted to talk about the US bombings and the death of an ISIL cleric. He also claimed that he was a mujahadeen (an Islamic warrior fighting a religious war) and that he prayed a lot.
Given the facts of the case it takes a lot of work to make anyone that the shooting was due to inadequate gun control and homophobia.

Personal anecdote: I shook the hand of a Marine general (ret) and MOH recipient today. He gave a short speech and mentioned that he spent time Trump last year--he was the warm up speaker at a few Trump events. He said Trump in person is very different from what you see on TV. He also said he got to fly on the Trump jet and was anticipating a fancy lunch on board (caviar, etc) but when he got on he smelled McDonalds and they all ate Big Macs. "My kinda guy!"
End anecdote.

The reaction to the Pulse nightclub shooting amazed me. Here was a guy saying over and over again he was killing people for ISIS, and the victimized group turns right around and says, no, it was hateful Republicans at fault. How can you reason with people like that?

Putin is a bad actor.

Compared to NK, China, Iran and ISIS he is small potatoes. Russia is neither economically powerful like China, nor does it have millions of ideological loons like the Muslim countries or ISIS et. al. Putin is not Kim Jung Il crazy either, he'll invade a region or two but he doesn't want nuclear war. .

The left needed a rallying cry they felt would dissuade some Republicans from voting for Trump, and the old Koch Brothers weren't cutting it, especially because they didn't support Trump, they needed someone who wouldn't be sympathetic, to their base, so the Muslim states were out. They probably remembered Romney's comments about Russia and Putin, and figured he'd make a good Boogyman, plus it was plausible considering Trump's business. And so it began "Russia, Russia, Russia!"

We do, but only after a president dies in office. We must be careful what we wish for.

Been on a bit of a Talking Heads kick of late, was reading an article in the New Yorker about a book on their album "Fear of Music".

Came across this quote:

"As with Warhol, they were wrong. Byrne claimed in his book accompaniment to the 1986 film “True Stories” that the era’s “new patriotism” was “a trick,” and he included a list all of the people falling for it. But, he goes on, “none of them is wrong. They are setting a good example, and in this film and book I’m teaching myself to appreciate them.” For years “we have been taught not to like things. Finally somebody said it was OK to like things. This was a great relief.”

Reagan era comment that scales to Trump.

People are tired of being told "not to like things."

Meanwhile the Progressives are all doing Attitude Karaoke to "Life During Wartime."
