A sign for Occupy Inauguration — taped to a lamp post on the UW campus.

IMG_1349

The image of Trump looks like he's saying "fuck." The event

Somebody saw fit to edit the sign:

IMG_1351

I've looked at the Facebook page for the event. It says:
Donald Trump and the reactionary core of the Republican Party are coming to power in 2017 on a platform of racism, sexism, xenophobia, and pro-corporate policies....

The Democratic Party has proven they are incapable of stopping Trump. It is time to build a new party for the 99% based on the united power of all exploited and oppressed people, on movements for social and economic justice, on the belief that we CAN do better than this corrupt and rotten system!

So are the organizers now saying that the 99% of the US are "exploited and oppressed people"? That's going to really go against a lot of their narratives. Or are they saying that 99% of the US will come to power on the backs of the "exploited and oppressed people"? That sounds pretty bad.

Making education free is actually an almost achievable goal.

It may be, very nearly, already here with online services, for a vast range of categories of "education". The cases where specialized equipment and manual skill transfer for job training are not usually the sort of things defined as "education" by this sort of activist.

This sort of education for instance is a bit difficult to do online, or "free" -

http://www.naltc.com/

But I digress.

Whats not (usually) free are credentials and hand-holding, i.e., dragging the horse to water to make the beast drink. Thats the main problem with education in the modern world.

Much like with health care, the first step of making it universal and "free" is to figure out how to bring down costs. And much like health care, education costs are high largely due to government interference (and attempts to make it "cheaper" with subsidies, which amazingly only inflate the prices anyway).

For any significant modern language (and insignificant ones too - want to learn Basque ? http://bcbasque.com/links/euskara-links/ ) also there are piles of Internet resources that twenty years ago you really would have had to pay for. Drago, I would never want to completely undermine the election of Trump. Let's get a SCOTUS nominee who is worthy of Scalia first, okay? I wouldn't wish to completely undermine Trump until he decides to move forward with punitive import tariffs, the expenditure of US taxpayer money on a border wall, a monopolistic bargain with drug makers using the government-instilled power of Medicare, a national daycare program (thanks, Ivanka!), and a federalized recasting of defamation laws.

Most of that bullshit is undoable by a president alone, so maybe there's nothing to worry about.

Somehow I would think that the sign alteration was misplaced. After Abdul Razak Ali Artan's knife attack wounding 11 on the Ohio State campus, all death-fearing students would unite against attacks by Muslims. White lives also matter as do brown and yellow lives, but attacking Muslims get killed.

Back in 2015, Faisal Mohammad, a Muslim and student at UC Merced, wounded several people using a knife. Despite the fact that his “manifesto” was filled with references to Allah, the motivations of the Muslim student were pegged by campus authorities as just “teenage anger.”

Then there was the Muslim woman at UL Lafayette who concocted a nasty tale about an imaginary Trump supporter who yelled racial slurs at her, beat her, and stole her wallet and hijab. The story turned out to be a hoax.

Invincible ignorance (boy I love that term! Brother Victor used to say that Invincible Ignorance is the most easily vincible sort, because once the word is made available that problem, at least, goes away) in most of these cases that I have seen, is the result of a failure of popular culture, in that achievable knowledge and skills are made to seem inaccessible, and therefore become so through forms of mental blocks whereby learning is not even attempted.

This, of all social problems, seems to be that most easily resolved through propaganda, of the good sort. It is not in the public consciousness that every sort of useful knowledge, or any knowledge at all, that even the most distinguished scholars can accumulate, is available free, for the price only of personal effort. The personal effort that would be the same for one in any quartile of the income distribution. The kids of the 1% or those receiving food stamps will have to plow through the same material to learn Latin. Its not clear that a teacher makes much difference, ceteris paribus. Learning is democratic.

Our educational methods were designed at a time when the only form of rapid transportation available to the vast majority was the railroad. Most of us have long since made private transportation arrangements, but the vast majority still rely upon an educational system in which everyone must go to the same place, moving at a pace appropriate to the slowest. This has always been inefficient and dreadfully boring, but now that this inelegant system has become the means whereby the very worst among us secure both wealth and influence, it must be stopped. I don't know how, but civilization cannot be saved if the power of the "Liberal Artists" is not broken.

Meanwhile, in 10 years, if you mention Occupy to people, they may say, "Isn't that where people pooped on cop cars?""

The problem for them is they believed their own rhetoric about the Tea Party, assuming it was just angry screaming in public places, and figured they'd do a "progressive" version of that. What they missed was that the Tea Party was effective in focusing their pressure on specific issues to oppose (stimulus, ACA), and directed it at media and officeholders to get their message front and center, and ultimately used this in elections to "brand" candidates and support them. They became a powerful faction in the GOP and the Right in general.

OWS though, just stuck with street theatrics, and the stuff they called for was so disparate, often contradictory, and directed wildly rather than focused on key officeholders, that there was no way they could achieve anything but make themselves look silly (and peter out after an initial burst of energy). That, and they kept messing with the cops and getting the inevitable results of said messing with the cops.

If this crew copies their tactics, they'll be about as successful, and a few years from now we'll all be like "remember those poop rallies? Whatever happened to them? Did they shave off their dreadlocks yet?"

In fact, if you look close, you can see big chunks of it. Eeee-yuck!

Of course, it also seems likely that the Republican Party, and more importantly its candidates, have always failed to live up to Chuck's fastidious standards, even when they were ineffectual losers like Romney and Ryan.

It's almost as if "lifelong republican" Chuck wants the party to abandon every single issue that led to flipping PA/MI/WI to the republicans.

I'll speak to Michigan, of those three.

Here in Michigan, we have a two-term Republican governor, a near-supermajority Republican state senate, a solid majority Republican state house, and an overwhelming Republican majority on the state supreme court. Thanks to 2010 redistricting, we have a Republican-majority US Congressional delegation. That was all the case, since about six years prior to Donald Trump.

We have two Democrat US Senators, in considerable part because Debbie Stabenow (Class I) was re-elected in an Obama year (2012) and Gary Peters (Class II) was elected in 2014 against a Republican nominee who quietly imploded in one of the more notorious and mysterious electoral failures of this new century in Michigan politics.

Trump "flipped" Michigan from blue to red presidentially by the narrowest margin in state history. And Trump managed that, entirely as a result of anemic voter turnout in Wayne County, which voted in record numbers for Obama in '08 and '12, at rates of more than 95% for Dems.

Cambridge History of English Literature - Historical context of the Canon - online

IA Richards, Empson - Read the Canon with no context; do formal analysis of the Canon showing no meaning, only formal relationships.

Michel Foucault - Social analysis of the canon as documents of oppression by dirtbag whites

Why read the Canon of dirtbag whites?

There are no humanities, only dirtbag oppression by dirty whites. Humanities courses abolished in the universities following upon their conversion to ranting propaganda by ignorant leftist incompetents. Dark Ages within the universities.

Alt History - Renaissance

Matthew Arnold - Read the canon of great literature

Cambridge History of English Literature - Historical context of the Canon

CS Lewis, Tolkien (who were educated in the tradition of the Cambridge History of English Literature) develop an alternate understanding of the canon from Anglo-Saxon times to the end of the Renaissance. Millions outside the university read this version. Humanities Renaissance begins. It has no influence within the university where the humanities enter terminal decline (see above)

Somehow .... the alt-understanding of the classics and the humanities enters the universities.

I'm seeing lots of Chuck offering honest and mostly reasonable opinions about his disagreements with specific Trump policy-potentials and his likewise honest and reasonable hope that should Trump begin proposing these in a strong way, that Congress push back. Not really seeing the rabid Anti-Trumpness I was expecting. Cool. On balance, I strongly disagree with ya Chuck, cuz I want the wall and I want certain tariff proposals and ideas to be explored in a serious way and even floated as trial balloons, if not actually implemented. I don't much worry about Trump's effect on First Amendment rights, and I would argue that in this day and age of Fake News (too many recent examples to mention), false accusations (Mattress Girl, Jackie and Rolling Stone, Duke lacrosse team), and Internet smearing/bullying, stronger or reexamined libel and defamation laws wouldn't be a bad thing.

I'm also reading Chuck's pretty accurate description of what happened in Michigan, which despite being a surprise flip to the media at large, was not actually much of a surprise to certain residents who could drive for miles without seeing a Hillary sign in a single yard. And, flip though it was, was truly a close call. I would venture to call Michigan a purple state, given that we know the right kind of Democrat (blue-collar appeal or African-American or both) could either flip some of the Trump voters (even with all the antics the Left has put on since Election Day, though possibly even more Dems would flip to the Right . . .) or bring out more African American Democrats to the polls, or both. Either of which puts Michigan solidly back in play.

Gotta agree with Todd above. The "lifelong Republican" moniker is getting overused. We all know how Chuck feels about Trump and I believe him when he claims he voted for Trump. I'm loving mostly all of what the Trumpening has reaped so far but I won't pretend I didn't take a very deep breath before making my choice on that brisk Tuesday morning. There are some things Trump could and might do that would certainly slacken the support of many of his voters, if not his more outspoken fans. It's also understood that those who doubted Trump could possibly win were in fact wrong. Very wrong. He won with a comfortable margin in the only election that mattered, Electorally, and flipped states he didn't need to flip. Not a very impressive margin, historically speaking, but quite impressive (IMO) for a man who was deemed "unelectable", especially given the money and organization behind his opponent (though not so much once the character of said opponent is factored in). Well, Trump proved those critics wrong. He won.

The mission now is to get the GOP as on board with Trump as reasonable, and keep the train rolling along the right track. Honest disagreement, sans whining and sans a shit-ton of Trump hate (which differs greatly from snark), over what that track oughtta be is a-okay with me.

I've got a question. When they say "attacks on Muslims," do they include fighting back when some Muslim goes all jihadi on you?

Today was my last day.

Well. Damn, young lady.
Congratulations or condolences whichever is appropriate.
Or should we say;
Novus ordo seclorum
or however that's spelled.

Poor libtards haven't got tired of losing. My advice, don't nominate a candidate under a DOJ investigation.
