"This is who Trump is. He was always bombastic. He always rated women. He always talked in a misogynistic, sexist kind of way..."

"... but he did it sort of proudly and out in the open; and he still won the Republican primary. In one sense, the fact that we do an interview and people's personalities come out, I'm very proud of that," said Howard Stern.
"I, certainly, in a million years, I didn't expect Trump to seriously run for president," Stern said. "All the times he came on the show he was a very good sport and he was in the spirit of the show. He's been very friendly toward me, friendly toward the show, always coming on, so I certainly wasn't going to f--- him over by releasing those tapes. Those tapes are out there on the internet anyway, so that was my stance."
"As far as my role goes, I feel proud in the sense that, I don't think anybody else does an interview the way this show does," he continued. "Everyone when they interview is sort of afraid to talk like real people. Now those words are biting him in the ass, but in general, we have a different kind of interviewing process than any other place. Which is why, all of the sudden, everyone, CNN, NBC, Fox, they have to turn to our tapes because it's a real conversation."
Talking like a real person... then running for office. That's dangerous... unless you're a saintly real person. Most politicians get on-task, self-censoring, and robotic. That's the normal way to stay out of this kind of trouble.

Like Mitt Romney? Was 2012 an anomaly?

The democrats are trying to put a rapist and an enabler into the White House.

This is only an issue so they can get another corruptocrat into office and keep money flowing to the wealthy. Anyone who holds this against trump is stupid. Anyone who votes for Hillary because of this is hypocritical to the level of moral degeneration.

There's a huge middle ground between the pronouncements of saints and those of the irredeemably damned, as Trump probably is (since bragging he's never felt the need to ask for God's forgiveness).

There's also a huge middle ground between the boring, self-censoring jurist and the nut job Richard Posner is rapidly devolving into. (And I say that as an admirer of Posner's fierce ideological independence over the years, bashing the Nino Scalias and Bill Clintons equally, for example.)

I guess it goes without saying that Hillary did not go on his show and talk like she really does to regular people to whom she isn't making paid speeches.

Regular people like, say, her secret service detail.

I was surprised to see Stern is backing Hillary. I always had him pegged for closet right of center, and figured his knowing Trump personally would have put him in Trump's camp.

I don't think Stern gets people to "talk normally" so much as he creates awkwardness where you either have to walk out on him or go into his world. That's how he kept calling Ivanka a "nice piece of ass" and Trump put up with it.

You go to war with the Trump that you have. Trump is like the First Marines put ashore on Guadalcanal in 1942 and then abandoned by their GOP/Navy. You have stand your ground and fight and fight until the overconfident Japs are killed. After all, when you are that surrounded and attacked day and night, there is no where to go.

Finally the Navy replaces the Admirals and comes back to join the fight. Trump has stood his ground, and it is turning now. Really turning. Morning Joe had an overnight change and is anti Hillary.

Your supposed friends that ran away and hid are what they are.

If Hillary wins, the people who voted for her will suffer a severe case of buyers remorse before she even takes the oath of office. The crap and corruption being exposed in the Wikileaks / Podesta emails give the GOP House years worth of material to investigate.

I will start immediately if she wins. The GOP and the Press will have to try and sweep their credibility up off the floor, so both will chew on Hillary. Her Presidency will either be locked up, or a disaster that leads us to war in Syria. She'll have to punch the Syrian tar baby to take focus off her exposed corruption.

Even the Morning Joe had to put on their pretend shocked faces today during the pre-hand washing ceremony. It took a leaked memo for them to come to realize the Clinton foundation was a shake down slush fund for the Clintons? Bullshit. They all know it. They actually looked worried. Not about Hillary losing, but the disaster that awaits if she wins.

All this Trump, pussy, Howard Stern stuff will seem like such a stupid waste of time when President Hillary goes on TV to tell the nation we just engaged Russian airplanes over Syria.

I'd hate to live in your world, where "real people" talk like Donald Trump. Would you accept that kind of talk from Meade? If the real people I know talked like that, I would be ashamed of them and myself.

You don't have to be a saint to treat women with respect. And while you might give someone a pass talking about pussy grabbing if they are a 15 year old boy, Donald Trump was 60 when that was recorded. Melania's excuse, that Billy Bush was egging him on, also might fly if he was in high school, not so much when you are a high profile and very rich celebrity and businessman.

We get it. Supreme court justices and presidential candidates can't be generators of interesting thoughts and concepts, else narrow-minded partisans use their free-wheeling expressions against them during the confirmation process or election campaign.

This suggests some additional insight into why Althouse has a soft spot for Trump. She is maybe the greatest generator or extractor of interesting ideas out there today. I think on some level she identifies with Trump. Of the many things Trump is, boring he is not. A lot of her defense of the guy arises when people deliberately distort his words for political advantage. I think she mentally puts herself in his shoes and imagines the controversial things she has said and how those words could be used against her should she ever, if only theoretically, find herself seeking a similar position.

Assuming I'm getting warm, I won't make the obvious rejoinder.

An interesting fact is saints are decided after they're long gone, while they were alive they did and said things distinctly not saintly from the perspective of contemporaries. From written accounts, Mother Theresa often expressed herself in a nasty way, and was regarded as strident and demanding.

Same is true for presidents and other public figures. Trump is a "salt of the earth" kind of guy, speaks his mind, calls it like it is. That is more like "normal" people than the polished figureheads we typically encounter. Yet he can be soft-spoken and careful, like when he met with the Mexican president. Ironically, Trump was criticized for not being "tougher" about the wall. See, in the eyes of the media Trump can't win for losing.

We the "common" people think of Trump as an unpolished diamond. We find his off the cuff commentary refreshing, we know what he means because we understand metaphor, hyperbole and humor. In truth, Trump is a sensitive soul, not in a thin-skinned way, but insofar as he is very much aware of the social context in which he's operating. In the Stern radio show environment of years ago, of course he'e talk like "one of the guys", just like we'd expect.

The crucial element is that fundamentally Trump is a generous, warm and empathetic human being. IMO the election will be decided by this factor: Clinton is to her core a true narcissist, while Trump is the polar opposite.

This noble knight, possessed of every virtue and completely well-prepared, was helpless before us."

Romney was about as saintly as candidates get. Successful as can be in a very unforgiving environment, and so far as I can tell, painfully ethical in his work. Impeccable and enviable family life. Huge service to the community. Mild, thoughtful, intelligent, honorable, organized, a good leader and a good listener. Did I miss anything?

What Stern doesn't say is that his show promotes women as sex objects and if you don't participate, male or female, you are not a "good sport."

What I tell acquaintances about Trump is that Trump spoke and speaks like a regular person. Hill spoke and speaks like a politician. The former reveals. The latter conceals.

We've seen the real Trump. The mediaswine have made sure of it. We know from the "email scandal" and Wikileaks that Hillary's and her campaign's behavior are about concealing her record and who she really is from us.

Fortunately, through some slips of the tongue, books by her assigned protectors, Wikileaks, FOIA releases and, however unintentional, disclosures by Comey and the FBI, we have seen that she is abusive, a grifter, a liar and an incompetent who may not even be physically fit enough for the job.

Simple. 1.) I do not pay any attention whatsoever to anything written or said in the usual "news media", 2.) I carefully observe how people behave and what they say, and 3.) study available factual evidence of conduct.

Watching and listening to candidates as they've addressed and interacted with the public, and gathering info from documented sources leads to my comments in the prior post.

Examining the record of any human who has had an active, accomplished life, there will be flaws, errors, mistakes, misstatements, gaffs, bad decisions, and even rare instances of stepping outside the bounds of strictly ethical behavior. There are always some bones to pick at. But these events do not define the whole or the essence of a person.

I'm quite certain I'm right about Trump. And even more sure about Clinton's utter lack of redeemable qualities. Frankly it's telling that no one specifies what is seen in Clinton that would make her a credible friend, neighbor, team member or leader let alone president of the country.

Exactly. And that is why Trump for a time confounded the adversary. Most of their artillery was trained on conventional challengers, more Romney-wannabe's, who could be hamstrung by real or alleged disclosures of shocking indiscretions such as giving the family dog a (much enjoyed) ride on the top of the family car. But Trump was out of scope. They had not really planned on dealing with a guy who, when attacked like that, just said "FYNQ" or (adopting the advice of a great man) he "punched back twice as hard."

Eventually they got on Trump's six --and Lord knows, he gave them enough chances-- and so here we are.

I don't know what the next candidate will be like, but since neither Romney (real merit) nor Trump (shameless contumacy) will suffice, I guess we will get the Total Hell Beast.

That assumes that we will still be having elections.

My reaction to the Howard Stern comment is "bullshit!" Donald Trump chooses his own acquaintenaces and it is striking that two of them are Howard "I make a living off sex talk" Stern and billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, who entertains famous friends (like Donald Trump) at his "Lolita" sex parties.

Add to these interactions with sex-hounds, the Access Hollywood tape and the pending charges of child rape in New York by one of Epstein's 13-year-old sex slaves and you get strong circumstancial evidence to consider when choosing your next President.

Re: Trump and his permanent adolescence. It is weird. Maybe testosterone poisoning but more likely a dominance thing. Frankfort's classic "On Bullshit" seems very relevant here (and is, in any case, a worthy read). Bullshit --whether on sexual prowess or on athletic skill or superb financial acumen or how one carved the corner with the engine at redline and the back-end almost breaking loose-- is just bullshit. In its low and primitive form it is bar-room bragging to no real effect. In its highest form it is stunningly outrageous hyperbole so perfectly presented that the audience simply applauds at the audacity of such assertions.

It has only a very limited connection to empirical reality.

That doesn't make it any the less reprehensible, depending on one's appetite to be a victim who claims offense at hearing the bullshit, or the bullshitter's skill in holding a line in that magical zone between incontestable fact, plausible exaggeration and utter fantasy. The nature of bullshit and the judgement thereof necessarily entails a good deal of judgment.

One might say that it is a Scold Trap: the bullshitter puts out an absurd proposition, elicits statements of outrage, and then isolates them as unimaginative and angry little scolds.

In Trump's case, we are way off the charts. I defer to others, more expert in bullshit, to help us find the shore.

I turned on the car radio years ago and heard a caller ask Fran Drescher about her rape, laughing and saying she must have enjoyed it to some extent. Drescher was tough, tearing him apart, but Stern, the asshole, said approximately, "you have to answer the question."

Stern is not a man.

And we are discussing Trump's language, even though he is more on right on the issues and possible solutions. We are becoming a small people easily swayed by the national media.

I am not discussing Trump's language, I am discussing his character and his honesty. One rapist is enough, so I am not betting on Trump's character. You can explain to your grandchildren why you voted for him. FiveThirtyEight tells us that only 41% of the people voting for Trump are doing so because they like him - most of the rest are voting against Hillary - and I am not sure that will end up as a better result. So neither will get my vote.

As for Trump being right on issues, I don't think that he is. Consider the tariff/free trade choice he says he is making. Read here what Economist Don Boudreau at Cafe Hayek has to say.

Dude asks: And does anyone remember something called a "groupie". You know a woman who wants to sleep with rich, popular and powerful people so they can just say they did. Exactly what is the difference here between what Trump was referring to and a groupie? As Scott Adams said, women sitting next to a rich and powerful person sort of act a little different.

Yes, this phenomenon was discussed a month or so ago regarding the same topic. Good to remind people, though, that some women are attracted to fame, power and money and that some collect rock musicians, politicians, athletes or moguls.

rhhardin said...

Consider the tariff/free trade choice he says he is making.

Economics loses sight of the big picture, that wealth-creating voluntary transactions depend on no fraud and no force. The latter two are enforced by a national government.

If the country you're trading with uses fraud and force in its citizens, you import fraud and force into your own country, and the economic Pareto optimum doesn't exist any longer; and the transactions no longer increase wealth.

An added oversight, independent of this major one, is that once the economy is big enough, it already has all the variety you need to get the benefits of trade internally. The benefits saturate with size, so to speak.

Neither of those come up in economics 101.

Nobody has critiqued Trump more on his past positions than me, but everything Trump has evolved on is in the right direction. Although I found him much more articulate when he was young, his changes in position are nearly all improvements. He's getting better.

Clinton has evolved from a little carnivorous dinosaur into a T-Rex. All her positions are worse than they were before. She has become more corrupt, more greedy, and more dishonest every year.

Watch the "Morning Joe" video linked above by AprilApple:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Or0WYLnQ1BE

Even people on her side are amazed and disgusted at her corruption and "sliminess". Not simple words spoken long ago that effect nothing, but actual acts of corruption, crime, and treason.

Trump is an asshole, but this is an easy call.

bagoh20 said...

" Real business economic transactions are based fraud and force. Big boys understand this as the baseline norm. "

Both are bullshit.

Most business is small business, and most of it has nothing to do with fraud, or force. It is simply getting someone to voluntarily trade what they have for what you have with money as the vehicle. That other shit may happen, but it is nowhere near the level that books and movies suggest. You voluntarily traded your money and attention for that bogus insight from someone. Maybe they defrauded you, but you swallowed it voluntarily.

We understand the need for you Clintonistas to project. But honestly, Trump's best defense is Hillary. That's why she hides and the media and the trolls always hold the conversation to Trump.

Also baffled a little by the iambic keyer. It sends stuff I don't think I put in, but I have bug reflexes. That keeps the speed down.

Voluntary trades: Wealth Comes from Disagreement

If you prefer something I have to somethihg you have, and I prefer that same something you have to that same something I have, we can trade and we both come out ahead.

We disagree about value.

Our combined wealth increases by the amount of the disagreement. This is miraculous, because there's only a rearrangement.

There's a story of a chaplin in a WW2 prison camp who would take his monthly Red Cross box and set out trading cigarettes, meat, jelly, and so forth, each trade reflecting the preferences of the other guy, say of jelly over cigarettes, and return to his bed with the equivalent of two Red Cross boxes. All he did was know who preferred what, and came away leaving everybody better off, yet with a profit also to himself. This is the vocation of the middleman. Disagreement is his melieu.

All voluntary trades raise the combined wealth. Trades that don't benefit both sides don't happen, at least not voluntarily.

Add up the voluntary trades over the nation, and the national standard of living rises by that amount.

The rule for generating the maximum amount of disagreement over value is: specialize and trade. The specialist values his output at much less than his customers do, and so he acquires a job. So long as the disagreements survive, his job is economically possible. The national economy booms.

For his needs, the specializer trades with other specializers.

Self-sufficiency, by contrast, is the route to extreme poverty.

Obama is the master of closing disagreement gaps, and with each closed gap a job disappears. Obama's is the economic policy disaster of the century.

I seem to remember this being near the top in popularity among "law blogs." When a campaign has a $billion, Soros, PACs and who knows how much under the table, why leave any stone unturned - even if your candidate may be hiding under one of them?

I live in the real world of business - not the mostly imaginary one of novels, movies and socialists where deals are all by design exciting, underhanded, dramatic events with winners and losers. 99% of transactions are win/win. Otherwise they would not happen. Is that really hard to grasp? I know it's not how it looks on TV, but there is a reason for that and it's also a win/win transaction. See, you do it all the time, and you still have all your fingers.

@Freder when Lyndon Johnson drafted me back in '68 I heard way worse language than Trump's from my drill sergeant and fellow troopers.

Navy for me, 1967, Company 368, BT1 Mason our "DI". He was one of the most imaginative cussers I have ever heard in my life. Anyone who has been in the military finds being cussed by SJW folks to be like a soft warm hug. They just have no use of language.

"Pussy"? I was probably called that 20-30 times a day, individually and en masse. It was decidely not meant to signify a cat or a kitten. Mason would go into graphic gynecological detail about various pussies at times. Mothers, wives, sisters, girlfriends, women in general's pussies. He needed to be sure we understood exactly what he was talking about.

Compared to BMC Bishop of our sister company, though, Mason was a pussycat.

What I cannot for the life of me understand is why a whore would be offended by a man offering her money to do her job. Offended perhaps if it were not enough but otherwise? And she can always say no. As she did in this case.

Allegedly, anyway. Since Gloria Allred is involved, I doubt that any of it happened.

I read it and find it wanting. Taxes are not the same as prices. Cutting taxes can be done while prices rise because of tariffs, they are not equivalent.

Taxes go to a government entity that takes their cut and doles it back out after getting either a campaign donation or some other special privilege.

Prices go to a company that is used to pay x number of people's salary, who created something, and those salaries were used to raise their family, buy other stuff and save.

It is ridiculous that this yahoo equates the two. A rise in prices is NOT a tax.

This is the same crap the republican elite have been selling, it is snake oil.

In 2020, we'll hear complaints that a candidate isn't as pro-gay as Trump and why couldn't we nominate intelligent folks like him.

I'd hate to live in your world, where "real people" talk like Donald Trump. Would you accept that kind of talk from Meade?

Have you never said anything anybody might find objectionable? If no, congratulations, you're the most boring person in existence.

Meanwhile I see that Hillary Clinton is using Morgan Freeman to make the final case for her in a commercial. That would be the same Morgan Freeman who called us all racists for being upset at paying more for worse coverage under Obamacare.

The same Morgan who is marrying or has married his own step-granddaughter. We'd know this if he was a conservative, mind you.

Pitied because the robotic future has no place for hayseeds and good old boys.

Small problem: We're armed, numerous, and versed in using guns. We also know our backyard really well and our military, honestly, has never been very good at guerilla warfare. And given how much of our military is "good old boys", you'd have issues with mutiny and the like should anything be tried.

I love that you feel the robotic future has no place for hayseeds and good old boys. No other group has an issue. They can just be slaves.

Can you explain WHY I should do anything to help this country? Why I shouldn't sell whatever I can to another power, given that this country, per you, gives no shits about me?

If you want to fight back, get an education in skills that will be in future demand because the leftists you fear are cold-hearted wild-west free market capitalists.

Nothing says "wild-west free market capitalists" like people demanding government subsidies for their businesses.

Really. I saw the same documentary and came away with my impression of Mitt reinforced. Nobody ever claimed that he wasn't a devoted family man.

He just opposed Obama, so had to be accused of numerous types of horrible actions. But it was all his fault. Because Progressives are all about not blaming the victim.
