Hey, Trump supporters: You should resist the "Weekend at Bernie's" joking about Hillary's stumbling, collapsing walk.

It's too much like something that is already a problem for Trump: Mocking the disabled.

Whether that's really mocking a disabled person or not, it is perceived as a gap in decency and empathy, and further humor of that type is going to fit the confirmation-bias template about him.

Trump already addressed Hillary's health problem, by saying: " I hope she gets well, gets back on the trail & we'll see her at the debate."

In what sense of the word is Hillary disabled? Taking her minion's statements at face value she has an infection and is expected to recover.

Trump is striking the right tone himself but his supporters need to keep pounding Hillary on this. Without keeping her health issues in front of people constantly her camp probably would have been able to get away with 'fainted from dehydration' lie.

A lot of American politics is motivated by a primitive urge for revenge:

"The Right mocked Ted Kennedy's death, so let's mock Scalia's death."

"The Left mocked Reagan's Alzheimer's, so let's mock Hillary's pneumonia[or whatever it is]."

Brando said...

All Trump has to do here is release his own health records (the real ones, not the phony crap about his "tremendous" health) and let Team Hillary flail about. Then say something about how their story keeps changing.

Mockery here is a bad idea--Hillary does her best when people feel sympathy for her and people already think Trump is a bully. If he stays on message this could make up his deficit.

Will his handlers control him or are they going to let Trump be Trump?

"Trump already addressed Hillary's health problem, by saying: " I hope she gets well, gets back on the trail & we'll see her at the debate.""

If he stays on that theme he's in good shape. Team Hillary is flailing now because even if this is just poorly timed pneumonia, it focuses people on an image of weakness, and any dissembling by her staff just feeds the "why is she hiding something" theme. Making this about Trump right now would be a big mistake.

Did anyone actually mock Kennedy's death? If I recall most of us made Chappaquiddick comments, or maybe pushed back on all the obits that made it seem like he was a living saint. But I don't recall any "rest in hell" type remarks.

As for Scalia, there was a lot of leftist gloating now that they had a new opening on the court, and negative comments about the sort of justice he was. But that was about it.

There was and still is a lot of nasty jokes about Reagan's Alzheimers though.

Trump has fair skin and reddish hair, and would be very susceptible to that. If he had even one spot reomved, what would the headlines be? "TRUMP TREATED FOR CANCER!"

Hillary did not "stumble." They had her propped up on that bollard, and when it came time to walk, she could not do it. Her legs buckled under her and she collapsed forward and would have made a faceplant into the gutter if they had not caught her. They did not "throw her like a side of beef," but the collapse was a surprise to the guards by the SUV, so they just barely caught her in time and guided her forward to land in the car seat. Quite undignified, but not intentionally rough handled.

Not a Trump supporter here, but anyone like Hillary who so comfortably lies to the American people, including her supporters, is worthy of nothing but contempt. Yesterday, those lies progressed from "overheated" to "dehydrated" to "pneumonia" as she fumbled for a lie the press would swallow. Obviously, there's something wrong with her that she must consider to be disqualifying, so she's going to continue to try to run out the clock before the public finds out. When did that kind of deceit and deception ever earn anyone sympathy?

After trying yesterday to agree that yes, why indeed it was pretty hot at the memorial service, only to be usurped by the pneumonia announcement, some in the press are now trying to say, "oh, by the way, members of Hillary's staff have also gotten pneumonia lately". Is that helpful? Hillary went to be with her grandchildren and then hugged a little girl. Hillary was in close proximity to people at the 9/11 memorial.

If this pneumonia is spreading around her campaign, shouldn't Hillary not be out Typhoid Mary-ing?

Glenn Reynolds just linked to the following tweet: "If Hillary cannot make it through a 9/11 ceremony, how is she supposed to make it through an actual 9/11?" In your estimation is that inappropriate humor? Or is it merely a pertinent observation posed as a question?

Then there's this proposed update to Hillary's logo. Is this inappropriate in your eyes? Your faithful commentators need to know.

The situation is grave. If elected, is it likely that Hillary Clinton will be healthy enough to carry out the duties of the office of President of the United States? Or is she more likely to be incapacitated for lengthy periods of time and possibly die in office? Humor is one way to point out that a sober assessment of her health is needed. Does Hillary Clinton have an advanced case of Parkinson's Disease, as at least one qualified doctor has pointed out? (This diagnosis is consistent with her public symptoms, right down to the coughing and pneumonia from an inability to swallow properly.) Are you ready to discuss this issue, Professor, with or without barbed humor?

They can try to make hay out of something minor, but it's far less effective than what they can put in your head when you're holding back.

Look at Hillary's Goldman Sachs speeches that she won't release (or even ask Goldman to release). What do you suppose is really in there? Now, it could be some slightly embarrassing stuff about "how much good big finance" has been, or her sympathy with entities like Goldman, but far worse is what we can imagine when she won't release them. We can picture her mocking the OWS and populist nonsense, and promising to keep the tax laws favorable for fund managers. We can picture a great quotable moment like her promising to be their advocate in the White House.

What's in there has to be worse than what most people are going to figure is in there when you're hiding it.

Michael said...

But the thing that's worse than campaigning? Actually being President.

Hillary isn't evil. She is just wrong. But just because she is wrong doesn't mean we should hate her. She needs our love and compassion.

In that light, anyone who votes for her must really hate her and want her dead. Shame on you. Hillary just can't take it. Leave her alone! Let her retire.

Sometimes we have to act in others best interest even when they don't want us to. Ask Hillary, she will tell you! It takes a village people.

Hillary's and Trump's health is an important factor.

To mock or make a big deal about the physical disability or health of a random person is something that is uncalled for, rude, boorish. It is not any business of ours since that random person is not in charge of anything or will be affecting our lives.

HOWEVER, the health of the next person to be the President of the United States is of utmost importance. The Presidency is a highly stressful occupation and the person in that office needs to be able to withstand the stress. Able to act appropriately, quickly, intelligently, with full facilities to make crucial decisions that may be life or death decisions. Deciding and acting on things that can affect millions of people.

The health, mental and physical of the President IS our business.

Trump and his campaign would definitely be foolish to mock Hillary over her ill-health. But if Hillary is unhealthy-- and in that video she sure looks ill-- if she is not healthy enough for the stress of holding the most powerful office in the world, the voters have a right to know. His campaign needs to approach the issue with tact -- is Trump capable of that?-- but it needs to be talked about.

As for his supporters, well of course Trump is held to account for his supporters, unlike Dem candidates who are never made to. The Clinton camp and her minions in the media will highlight the "nastiness" of Trump supporters, which may turn off some sensitive younger voters. (Trump haters will, of course, feign outrage, but who cares; they were never going to vote for him anyway.) But older voters know this tactic of blaming the Republican candidate for every mean comment on the internet is bullshit. As you said in another post, it is a tradition to mock the powerful. Politics is not for the faint of heart -- no pun intended.

The other issue regarding that video is how it will affect the undecided voter. Is the visceral impact of seeing her weakness something that will instill confidence in her as the future commander-in-chief? Scott Adams says her campaign is effectively over. It may well be. There are reasons why leaders and wanna-be leaders wish to keep their afflictions hidden.

Trump really ought to play the gentleman with respect to Clinton's illness. He can call out that, for example, even if he thinks she's "crooked," he still hopes she gets some rest and gets better. Because she's not a witch and she's not a monster. He invited her to his (upteenth) wedding, albeit before all the seamy business with the emails and the Clinton foundations came to light, and you don't generally invite monsters to your wedding. Gives him the opportunity to undercut the, ah, "overheated" rhetoric coming from Clinton II's team, by reminding the voters that Clinton and Clinton II have been pretty chummy with him over the years, regardless of the words they're mouthing now.

Not with the media covering for her. The only reason we even know about her latest "medical episode" is because an ordinary person was able to record it without being noticed. She will not be betrayed by the media; however, she is being betrayed by her own body. Her handlers must be terrified that she will have a seizure at an highly inconvenient time (like during the debates) and they won't be able to pretend that it's just heat exhaustion or allergies or dehydration or rockin' pneumonia and the boogie woogie flu. She's lying and hiding but her body is telling the truth.

Trump really ought to play the gentleman with respect to Clinton's illness. He can call out that, for example, even if he thinks she's "crooked," he still hopes she gets some rest and gets better."

I believe that is what he has said thus far. That and he doesn't know what is wrong with her.

I think his handlers probably had him tied up with a ball gag in his mouth yesterday to prevent him from doing his damn tweeting.

Hillary's people need to get upbeat about her disease. Pneumonia is just too plain jane, so I would suggest "Walkin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu."

Trump's charting the right course right now, which is just as you say. His 'deplorables', on the other hand, are entitled to a little gloating, aren't they?

I'm not a Trump supporter so I claim an exemption from this rule. I don't want Hillary Clinton anywhere near the White House. If it takes a major illness to prevent it, so be it. If on the other hand, she should choose to retire from politics, she should live and be well with her grandchildren. Voters have a right to know if someone who would be president has a debilitating disease. I've had it with 25 years of lies and deception from this woman. She obviously believes there is nothing more important than her becoming president. She's wrong.

I do not see the point with playing nice with Crooked Hillary. She isn't a nice person. Many of those supporting her aren't nice people. It was just sit fine when they made fun of John McCain III and the first injures that disabled him as a POW at the Hanoi Hilton. Instead of serving in that war honorably, Crooked Hillary was consorting with known communists. This is the woman who sold American foreign policy for Clinton cash, and hid it by illegally using an insecure private email server, tablet, and smart phones, to send and receive classified information, much of it overseas, while traveling those million miles. Whose people had the server bleach bitted after its contents had been ordered produced by Congress. The woman in charge of destroying the lives and reputations of the women her sexual predator husband attacked. Who laughed when she got a rapist off the hook. Who was instrumental in the failure of Madison Federal as the head lawyer enabling the pyramid scheme transactions. Etc. there is nothing redeeming or good about the woman, except, maybe, that she is a mother and grandmother.

Taking the high road should be fine. It is the good and noble thing to do. But the Dems and the left always cheat, and will win at any cost. If positions were reversed, and it were Trump, and not Clinton, who had the medical issues, the negative coverage would be wall to wall. And what do we have for this double standard? A runaway federal govt, a doubling of the national debt over the last 10 years, much of the Mideast in flames, with the blood of tens, if not hundreds, of thousands on the hands of Obama and Clinton. And with that violence spilling over into terrorism becoming a routine occurance in Europe. These people are evil, and will lie, cheat, and steal to gain and maintain power. Every time you take the high road, you make it just that much easier for them to do just that.

It's not about playing nice, and certainly not about playing nice because Hillary deserves nice treatment. It's about recognizing when you have a good issue working in your favor, and helping it fester rather than hijacking it into a story refocusing attention on "some crazy thing Trump said today" which has been his pattern. Saying something like "I'm worried about her health" drives home the point that she may be sicker than her lying campaign lets on; adding "her campaign should come clean about this" is even better--reminds everyone of the lying, which they already associate Hillary with (part of her own pattern). Also, the longer people are talking about her being sick, the more she becomes associated subconsciously with weakness--a good way to frame the election.

What would be a dumb move? Anything over the top, or even distracting--like "weak Hillary, can't even walk properly!" or "can we get back to talking about how much I love Putin?" That's the sort of save the Clinton campaign looks for, and it changes the story.

The leftists had John McCain with one foot in the grave in 2008. It's their playbook. They can't complain now the shoe is on the other foot.

And good on his daughter for very vocally calling them on it. They had no problem discussing how horrible McCain's health was --- but Hillary's health is an unfair issue?

McCain was a horrible candidate for plenty of reasons --- his health was not a big one for me since he showed no signs of medical difficulties while running or governing for years.

The New Yorker cartoon made it into my facebook feed within hours of being published. And I shared it. And two of my friends shared my share. Everyone but her most diehard supporters is making fun of her situation.

Couldn't happen to a nicer person.
