Hillary Clinton's Condoleezza Rice moment.

Speaking to the National Association of Black Journalists and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists yesterday, Hillary Clinton said:
“I hope you will compare what I’m proposing to what my husb— . . . my opponent is talking about...”
Here's how a similar slip from Condoleezza Rice was treated back in 2004:
Could preternaturally self-composed National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice actually have a roiling inner life? Is she tormented by needs, longings, embarrassing fantasies? So the world wondered after New York reported what it benevolently called a "poignant faux pas" committed by Rice at a recent D.C. dinner party. What Rice reportedly said was this: "As I was telling my husb—" before abruptly breaking off and correcting herself: "As I was telling President Bush." Jaws dropped, we're told. And though nobody thinks Bush and Rice are "actually an item," we were nevertheless reminded that the unmarried Condi does regularly spend weekends with the president and first lady....
Interesting that both former Secretaries of State caught themselves after the "husb" and never let the "and" out. The 2 women will be treated differently, and not just because Democrats and Republicans get different press.

Rice was talking about a man she was close to and worked with in private and could have been in love with. And as a never-married woman, she attracted speculation about what was going on with her sexual desires.

Clinton has a husband. Nobody more obviously has a husband than Hillary. That of course doesn't stop people from speculating that she may have extramarital interests, but it would be hard to think of her fixating on Trump. You can't read Hillary's slip and think it reveals a secret desire for Donald Trump. What it does reveal is how often Hillary refers to her husband. Bill is a constant presence in her mind, it seems. The term-limited former President is about to get back in office, inside Hillary's brain.

Laslo has it. It's hatred.

And the Hildabeast is a dyke. Which brings a whole new meaning to "scared straight."

Yes, there will be a huge disparity in coverage, if there is any, on this slip-up.
We citizens know and I even the media know it but they are too dishonest to admit it.

See coverage of Laura Ingraham's "nazi salute" vs Elizabeth Warren's same action.

How about the black & Hispanic journalists giving Hillary applause yesterday. The excuse making about this is truly pathetic.

So naturally, Donald Trump -- the astonishingly boorish idiot that he is -- is going to prompt even more unfair and biased reporting from the world's unfair and biased news media. The media will make more mistakes than usual, dealing with Trump's regular outrages and fantasms. And that same media will even make more mistakes, twisting itself into knots to assist Trump's opponent, now that Trump is the standard-bearer of the Republican Party.

None of this is surprising.

Is there anyone who didn't expect this? Is there a Republican who has gotten fair who has gotten fair treatment in a presidential campaign in the last 60 years? When Republicans nominated candidates noted for moderation and their ability to work across party lines, to run against Democrats who were noted for the partisanship and extremism, the Republicans were always portrayed as the evil and dangerous candidates.

I don't know what Donald Trump -- as an actual, living parody of a media-created Republican racist/xenophobic/sexist/dishonest business tycoon -- can do to cure that greater media pathology.

Let's remember that the last 60 years of general media bias has also brought us a small conservative media. But the National Review's Matthew Sheffield has an interesting take on whether conservatism is actually served well at all by a conservative media that only operates as an echo chamber:

I am going to expand on that a bit.

Both Bill and Trump share a commonality: they made themselves a persona that people gravitated towards, and that helped them succeed in their goals, making it seem effortless.

Hillary has tried on numerous personas in an attempt to replicate that, but has fallen short each time: you either have it or you don't.

With this in mind, she feels -- at some level -- that she is running against her husband (or at least a stand-in for him, depending how far down the armchair-analysis path we go).

Her anger at Trump is sublimated anger at her husband.

Solved.

I am Laslo.

Trump and Hillary were not always opponents. They used to socialize.
Was Trump hittin' that?

Laslo Spatula said...

"...and that helped them succeed in their goals, making it seem effortless."

More than "effortless." It made them seem like success was their due. Inevitable.

Replace 'Trump' with 'Bill' and that statement still works.

Maybe Trump's run for the White House is all the result of pillow talk gone awry.
Perhaps the whole Republican nightmare was conceived on a plush mattress somewhere in Trump Tower.
Was it a conspiracy or a did Trump feel challenged after some off hand comment?
Was Trump's ego inflamed by a poorly timed cackle as they snuggled in the afterglow?

So it turns out they have a much better marriage than the gossipy meme would have it.

"And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh." -- Mark 10:8

To expand on the commonality:

Both Trump and Bill have been able to portray themselves as 'self-made' men, Yes, powerful acquaintances, benefactors, etc, but that is all hazy memory dust.

Few would perceive Hillary as 'self-made', unless the 'self-making' was the conscious decision to attach to a more powerful host.

Again: Hillary is running against her husband. If she beats Trump, she symbolically defeats Bill.

I am Laslo.

David Begley said...

Bill and Hillary are not married at all. It is a sham marriage. A dishonest political bargain. My questions to Hillary, "When was the last time you had sex with Bill? And if so, is there any evidence of this sexual encounter?" A marriage involves sex. Hillary is dishonest to her very core. Dishonesty defines her very being.

I give Laslo my proxy to ask the above questions. Verbatim. No deviations.

Laslo Spatula said...

I thought that this would coax an erudite comment from Althouse. If not the subject for the post "Is Hillary Running Against Her Husband?" with numbered takes on the layers therein.

MUST. WORK. HARDER.

Or is the idea of 'self-made' primarily a male construct? Important in men, suspicious in women?

Was Gloria Steinem 'self-made' or just reactionary to outside forces?

Here kitty kitty.

So. in Hillary's case it would be blurting "Huma" instead of "husb--"?

OT, @Chuck: "it has now become possible for a conservatively inclined people to consume all kinds of news and opinion catering to their specific tastes and viewpoints. Many right-leaning people have hailed this development, believing that they have finally defeated the hated liberal media." No "right-leaning people" believe that. Everyone knows the MSM are the MSM. Con circle-jerk may be harmful in some ways, but no one thinks it defeated anything or anybody. Lots of other things wrong with that piece (I know the term can mean anything these days, but O'Reilly is "conservative"?).

Of course the epitome of Hillary is it being necessary for her to be of service to a stronger man, and then to rob him of his strength and use it as her own. That is what she does with a "Husband."

I don't think it matters inside the soul of The Hildabeast whose strong man authority she is going after at any moment. Whomever's, her great need remains to capture it for her own uses.

And as sensitive as Trump actually is, down inside of his PowerMan act, he understands her. And therefore he understands there is a fight to the death going on for his male authority . In the end, either she will capture it, or he will have ignored all politeness and killed her off.

Its all one huge love intertanglement. Hillary had Qadaffi killed because he was so hot for Rice.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Tim, you're right. I forgot all the "hot talk" out of Kaddafi directed at Condi. "We came. We saw. He died." Indeed.

Trump has a head full of ideas. Regardless of who wins in November, Hillary divorces Bill and he marries Hillary. Donald calls that plan "The Super-Duper Boomerang."

Me too! But it was probably not lack of mettle but an abundance of good sense that keeps her out of politics.

Hildebeest actually has the hots for The Donald but knows she's never been his type. As with many strong women, she unconsciously looks for an even stronger man. Bill has, of course, been a big disappointment.

When you fail the bar exam, you just take it again. Many fully capable, smart people have failed. They don't just conclude they can't do it and quit.

I've changed my mind about Hillary.

I used to think she was lying to all of us. That she knew she was telling us a load of horse pucky when she would say things about her Email, or Benghazi, or sniper fire, etc.

But watching her these last months, I've changed my mind. She isn't lying. She is mentally unstable.

Seriously. Watch her and think to yourself, "Is this woman lying, or is she mentally unstable?"

I think you'll come around to my point of view. She shouldn't be allowed near the nuclear codes, or state secrets.

mockturtle said...

Eric, I do think she is unwell. Whether due to the head injury or other issues, she seems to lack stamina and avoids engagements. We really need to think about Kaine vs. Trump or Kaine vs. Pence. I'd be very happy with Pence but horrified by Kaine.

mockturtle said...

But she's still a liar.

eric, I've come to the same conclusion; Hillary Clinton has dementia (a medical condition, not a rhetorical barb.)

I believe her concussion in 2012 was much more severe than anyone realizes or now admits.

Her gaping smile, exaggerated laughing at inappropriate places, losing focus, having to be reminded who she is talking to on the phone, falling asleep in meetings, completely detached in meetings and interviews, saying the most outlandish lies and then this. In isolation, each of these could be dismissed, but when looked at together points to a form of dementia.

"You can't read Hillary's slip and think it reveals a secret desire for Donald Trump."

Why not?
a) Because she's already married to someone else. Ha ha!
b) Because a woman can't feel sexual desire for an attractive man with whom she is in conflict? Ha ha ha!
c) 'Cause she's a raging bull-dyke? Hmmmmm....

It does seem unlikely that Hillary's "secret desire" is to marry someone considerably less wealthy than herself.

Jupiter said...

Why would she want to marry one of the "little people"?
