"Three law enforcement officers were shot dead and at least three others wounded in Baton Rouge, La., on Sunday...."

"One suspect had been killed, most likely by police gunfire, and two others, described as wearing all black, were being sought, said Cpl. L’Jean McKneely, a police spokesman. 'We do believe there is more than one suspect.'"

So if Clinton is elected, we are in for a national disaster.

And if the national disaster gets here before election day, we will elect Trump.

Have I got that right?

Obama has played his "nuanced" game and gotten away with it thanks in part to a complicit media for seven years but, like all houses of cards, eventually it falls. His playing with fire in drawing equivalecies between thug behavior and police responses is now coming home to roost, as his old pastor Rev. Wright might say.

Obama may pay in history, but Hillary will pay in November.

These are attacks on public servants, on the rule of law, and on civilized society, and they have to stop," Obama said in a statement. "We may not yet know the motives for this attack, but I want to be clear: there is no justification for violence against law enforcement. None. These attacks are the work of cowards who speak for no one. They right no wrongs. They advance no causes. The officers in Baton Rouge; the officers in Dallas – they were our fellow Americans, part of our community, part of our country, with people who loved and needed them, and who need us now – all of us – to be at our best."

We have all noticed the disparity in the treatment of events by the news media involving groups favored by the left versus groups that the left hates. For example, whenever something happens involving Muslims the news media goes out of its way to play down the incident for fear (in their minds) that the general populace would take to the streets and indiscriminately attack Muslims. However, when incidents occur that involves the police as the perpetrators, the new media goes out of its way to play up the incident and they have no compunction about broadcasting rumors (such as Michael Brown had his hands up before he was shot) as fact. If they followed their own logic (yes I know that is asking the impossible) shouldn’t the news media be concerned about their complicity in these attacks.

"I am also sending in the National Guard to patrol the streets of Chicago. The murders and shootings have been out of control for a long time and they must stop. "

"America is turning into a Third World country on my watch and I don't like it one bit. It makes me look bad."

"I am now speaking to my fellow Black Americans. Stop committing crimes. Stop dealing drugs. Stop using drugs. It's not cool. You aren't helping yourself or your race with this type of behavior. I used to smoke pot and it was stupid."

Why can't other people reap the nastiness that your fellow travelers sow, I suppose you wonder? Why not look down on black America and expect something more magical and neighborly to arise from them?

Pretty weird, conflicting priorities you've got there.

Why not deny what Lee Atwater and Ken Mehlman and Michael Steele have all admitted to? Black people aren't people; they have no right to feel aggrieved about anything. They should just shut up and stop standing in the way of Republican political maneuvering against them.

I've run across way too many Republicans who make excuses for the Atwater quotes to presume that they're not happy to have benefited politically from what that miscreant (and all who worked with him) did.

In SC in 2000 Bush operatives push-polled potential Republican primary voters by asking if they'd hold it against Bush challenger McCain if he'd had a "black" kid.

I blame Obama. You should too.

He had the opportunity, still has the opportunity, to help his country.

Instead, his rhetoric and the rhetoric of his party just pours more fuel on the fire.

If a black man is killed by cops of any race or gender, the Democrats move into overdrive to fund raise off of the hurt and the pain in that community.

When cops are killed because of this rhetoric, Democrats seek to deflect the blame. They throw out strawman arguments (Just look at Ritmo here) and try and change the subject.

No matter what the truth of the past is, the present is filled with a very large group of angry people who are willing to kill the police to get what they want. What they want isn't exactly clear at this point though. What is clear is that the Democrats think they benefit as they continue to pour more fuel on this fire and stoke the flames of hatred towards fellow Americans.

We need a President who is willing to stand up to these dividers. To make clear that they aren't going to put up with such unlawful activities such as blocking highways, destroying property and assaulting people.

It needs to stop and Trump is the only one of the two candidates who will put a stop to it.

He has not done anything worse (or near as bad) for race relations as Atwater and all who denied his admissions have done. The deniers are the ones with their hands on their eyes. Blacks have been killing cops for decades. Cops have been abusing cops for decades. When's it going to end? You think a white president or a Trump can make it all better? Lol. When such as the President, or NBA stars, or TV commentators tell the nation that cops are racists, or that police-civilian shootings like one recently in Baton Rouge was about race, it empowers the aggrieved, those who already blame some victimhood for their own poor choices, and only reinforces the myth of Ferguson, of "Hand Up, Don't Shoot."

BLM, Ferguson, I Can't Breathe, Hands Up - Don't shoot, , Freddy Grey, racist cops hunting blacks...it's all predicated on lies.

One thing almost highly publcized police shooting has in common. Someone was breaking the law, was confronted by cops, was resisting arrest and failed to follow the lawful orders of the police. Oh, and they were almost all high on dope.

In the recent Baton Rouge police shooting, a convicted felon was breaking the law selling bootleg music CD's, carrying a concealed firearm, which was another felony by itself, when he threatened another person with the firearm (another felony). Cops were called, and when they tried to search the suspect, he resisted (he was on felony probation, plus as a convicted felon, he would surely go to prison for that gun, forget the agg assault and resisting arrest). The cops knew he had a gun, which he was probably trying to pull. One cop was yelling "Gun Gun" and the other can clearly be heard warning the suspect to stop something or get shot. It cannot be surprising or unreasonable when the suspect was then shot. But immediately, our idiot President called this "racism" and wrong. Are we still in a nation of laws? This premature and almost certainly wrong call by El Presidente Supremo was outrageous, but nothing new.

And now, 3, or maybe 4 cops are dead in the same town. Several others are wounded. Thank you President Obama.

I don't like Trump. At all. But his election cannot come too soon.

The Atwater strategy amply explains why blacks bolted from the GOP after about 1970. It's only an "obsession" if you want to blame the Republican abdication of the black vote on blacks. Two RNC chairs thought it was important enough to come to terms with, apologize even. "Nobody is buying it?" You're a big nobody compared to them. A BIG, BIG MAJOR nobody.

I trust what they've said about their own strategy over what you say. Apparently they have more to gain by being honest than you do. White privilege must really be that strong. Much stronger than the political privilege that they have over your peon/footsoldier/grassroots self.

Over at The Federalist - a rabidly anti-Trump blog site, there is this analysis by John Gibbs – a black man - of what Obama has done. It explains the last 7 ½ years well.

"My view of America is that we are a place of great promise and opportunity, where someone like me, who is the grandchild of illiterate black Southern sharecroppers, can achieve success and reach the American dream. We are a place occupied by fair-minded, hard-working people whose culture and values have built a nation that is the envy of the world. I am proud to be a part of that culture.

Our Founders, while imperfect and a product of their times, were visionary heroes who made hard choices and compromises to give us the successful system we have today. Because Americans are good, we’ve worked hard over time to right the wrongs in our society that our Founding Fathers could not eliminate in their time. In summary, we are a fundamentally decent people blessed to live in a phenomenal land with a rich heritage.

But not so for President Obama. His view of our nation seems to be very different than mine and that of many other Americans. I believe that when President Obama thinks of America, more so than a place of hope or opportunity, he thinks of a place where racist white Christian fundamentalists came here from Europe, committed genocide against Native Americans, enslaved and segregated black people, denied women, gays, and other minorities their rights, and used capitalism and a rigged legal system to oppress poor people for centuries. He also believes this is still continuing today.

Given this view of America as an evil place in need of forceful justice for her sins, the president’s overarching goal has been to eliminate what he sees as the structural, institutionalized discrimination that defines America. He has done this by taking every opportunity to see disparities between groups as evidence of discrimination, then using all available resources to fight this perceived discrimination by going to war against the Americans he believes are responsible for it, who are almost always whites, men, police, and Christians.

A small sampling of the ways he has done this are: accusing whites of “white privilege,” which means having an unfair advantage due to being white, an advantage built upon oppressing minorities; accusing the police and justice system at large of racism; blaming pay differences between men and women on discrimination; and casting Islamic radicalism as a legitimate response to discrimination (ostensibly by white Christians).

This strategy has had two effects: 1) It’s caused the alleged victims of the perceived discrimination to become more militant, hostile, and only willing to make demands and not willing to engage in dialogue due to increasing their sense of victimhood, and 2) It’s caused the alleged perpetrators of the perceived discrimination to feel unfairly blamed for problems that are not their fault, thus less willing to engage in dialogue with people who will do nothing but accuse them of wrongdoing.

In other words, both sides are moving away from each other. This means that, contrary to unifying the nation, the president’s leadership has caused division and discord."

It means that there will be a lot more incidents like Dallas and Baton Rouge as long as Obama’s in office and if Hillary presides over Obama’s third term.

Atwater was a man before his time. I did admire him, for the Willie Horton ad, and for saying he would "peel the bark off of" that queasy little race traitor Dukakis.

But really, R&B, if you want to take a dispassionate look at who has been poisoning race relations in America, what about shit-sacks like Willie Horton? Here's what Wikipedia has to say about his accomplishments;

"On October 26, 1974, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Horton and two accomplices robbed Joseph Fournier, a 17-year-old gas station attendant, and then fatally stabbed him 19 times after he had cooperated by handing over all of the money in the cash register. His body was stuffed in a trash can so his feet were jammed up against his chin. Fournier died from blood loss.[2] Horton was convicted of murder, sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, and incarcerated at the Northeastern Correctional Center in Massachusetts.[3]

On June 6, 1986, he was released as part of a weekend furlough program but did not return. On April 3, 1987 in Oxon Hill, Maryland, Horton twice raped a local woman after pistol-whipping, knifing, binding, and gagging her fiancé. He then stole the car belonging to the man he had assaulted."

Quite the goodwill ambassador, Willie was. Pity the SCOTUS didn't legalize abortion in time for his Mom to get one. And then there's the million or so blacks who destroyed Detroit, and the worthless black parasites destroying Baltimore. Yeah, you call Republicans racists, R&B. Which ghetto do you live in? Received any good pistol-whippings lately?

It seems the Democrats are torn by the cop killings in Dallas and Baton Rouge. On the one hand, their allies in the BLM movement are showing their chops. Some may be concerned that it's not good for their image. But like Hitler in Munich in the 1920s (who got people joining the Nazis by showing that his followers were tougher than all the rest) it's critical that they are seen as the toughest bad-asses on the block. That they are tougher than the mayor and the cops. And at the center of power, Obama isn't going to do more than make a pro-forma denunciation of violence. He's got their back. He's not going to do anything. The only time he sends in the troops (FBI, DOJ) is when the shooter is white and the dead man is black.

You thought he was kidding when he promised to fundamentally transform the country?

The killings at Rev. Pinckney's church in Charleston were not so long ago. The residents of that city, black and white, benighted Southerners all, gave a great example of forbearance, sympathy and mutual respect.

We are in a strange time when South Carolinians are setting the best example for race relations. But they are and perhaps the rest of us could profit from the example.

Yes. His Muslim neighbors said he was not religious. Now that you mention it, Cook, how do we know that any of these dead murderers "acted in the cause of Muslim terrorism?" Just because a terrorist organization claims responsibility and, in this case, the victims' government say it was Islamic terrorism, what does that prove?

We may have Islam all wrong, just like Hillary and Barack are reminding us. Just because 99% of these attackers are Muslim, doesn't mean it is Islamic terrorism. It may just mean there is a high degree of violence inducing mental illness among Muslims. You may be on to something here.

Yes. Why are you providing transcripts from the Orlando killing to prove the Nice killer was acting in the cause of Islamic terrorism?

(That aside, I have commented here about my similar doubts about Omar Mateen's actual degree of motivation by Islam extremism. He is described as an angry, maladjusted person who may have been covertly homosexual or troubled by homosexual feelings. It is not so certain that he, either, acted as a muslim terrorist. There are many fucked up people who erupt and kill all the time. It is very easy for them to claim a greater cause for their actions by shouting expedient political or religious slogans, thereby hiding the truth, that they were just crazy or more of life's losers.)

Robert Cook said...

Robert Cook said...

""The cause of Muslim terrorism"? Cookie, the guy was a Muz, and he was a terrorist."

Was he? Descriptions of his behavior by his brother don't sound at all like a devout or even marginally observant Muslim.

His act of senseless mass murder was certainly terrorism, but there's no reason as yet to accept that he was a part of any organized Islamic extremist groups or was acting in their behalf or for their cause. At this point, the simplest explanation is that he was crazy and anti-social, like Dylan Roof or Jared Lee Loughner, and other similar crazy mass killers.

buwaya said...

Life has many losers everywhere. What they do about it is the result of memes that they absorb from the milieu. There are fashions in madness, fashions in misery.
Islam, historically, has a constant meme of "kill your neighbor". This recurs, frequently, constantly, among individuals, small bands and whole societies.

chickelit said...

Cook asserts: Yes. Why are you providing transcripts from the Orlando killing to prove the Nice killer was acting in the cause of Islamic terrorism?

As for the Orlando shooter...had he lived, his 911 call would most certainly have been admissible evidence in his trial. Why do you refuse to take it as prima facie evidence that he was motivated by radical Islamic ideology? Why must that conclusion be avoided?

buwaya said...

One recent meme is mass murder. Fifty years ago these people would have been just as mad or evil, but wouldnt have considered killing as many people as possible was their goal in life. Its become popular.
In Islam, this sort of thing was always popular, if directed at the enemy peoples. Granted it was generally organized by clan, tribe or band, but that was when people had tighter communal links.

It's not so hard to see for those who are not blind. Mehlman's and Steele's quotes are shorter, less equivocal and hopefully less "controversial". Here they are:

"By the '70s and into the '80s and '90s, the Democratic Party solidified its gains in the African American community, and we Republicans did not effectively reach out," Mehlman says in his prepared text. "Some Republicans gave up on winning the African American vote, looking the other way or trying to benefit politically from racial polarization. I am here today as the Republican chairman to tell you we were wrong."

“This party was co-founded by blacks, among them Frederick Douglass. The Republican Party had a hand in forming the NAACP, and yet we have mistreated that relationship. People don’t walk away from parties, Their parties walk away from them.

“For the last 40-plus years we had a ‘Southern Strategy’ that alienated many minority voters by focusing on the white male vote in the South. Well, guess what happened in 1992, folks, ‘Bubba’ went back home to the Democratic Party and voted for Bill Clinton.”

Enjoy!

And do, do try to see about how you can stick to your mission of trying to kill the message, rather than the messenger. I'm just a simple American, informing himself of what your party chiefs have been up to.

Good riddance to Michael K. Won't miss him a bit.

Me neither. If there's one thing the guy could never, ever handle, it was being wrong.

People like that just aren't worth conversing with.

Lee Atwater died 25 years ago. Steele pointed out that the "southern strategy" involved focusing on white voters. OK. Agreed. Who would disagree with this and why? This is not some breakthrough bit of political forensics. It has become pretty clear that it is a waste of time for conservatives to try and overcome the wonderful job that Democrats have done for black Americans. So, why try? Democrats have run Atlanta, Memphis, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Baltimore etc for many decades and the great prosperous and productive lives of black Americans in those cities speaks volumes about the excellent outcomes the Democrats have been able to pull off on their behalf. So why would Republicans try to do more when the job Democrats are doing cannot be bettered?

Yes indeed.

Definitely not a racist comment. Just presumes that blacks were better off during the days of segregation and prior to civil rights. Other than that, let me know which apples you're trying to compare these oranges to.

"great prosperous and productive"

Sorry to let you down about the new reality, Scarlet O'Hara.

Some you seem to enjoy sparring more than discussing the issues. Makes it hard to find the wheat for the chaff. A hell of a lot of chaff here...

More of the Atwater tape:

But Reagan did not have to do a southern strategy for two reasons. Number one, race was was not a dominant issue. And number two, the mainstream issues in this campaign had been, quote, southern issues since way back in the sixties. So Reagan goes out and campaigns on the issues of economics and of national defense. The whole campaign was devoid of any kind of racism, any kind of reference. And I’ll tell you another thing you all need to think about, that even surprised me, is the lack of interest, really, the lack of knowledge right now in the South among white voters about the Voting Rights Act.

The tape is more about Atwater than it is about the GOP.

It presumes nothing of the kind. Simply a fact that Democrats have run these cities for decades. Their record of advancement for black rights, black economic health, black education, black safety speaks for itself. It is not something that I would be proud of if I were a Democrat. For the most part the governance of these cities has resulted in abysmal outcomes for the black community.

Definitely not a racist comment.

I agree. It was a partisan comment -- perhaps a highly partisan one. But it was R&B who added the racism via projection.

Michael said...

Not sure what is partisan about pointing out that certain cities have been run by a particular party for decades and the outcomes for black Americans in those cities has been less than satisfactory.

Unless, of course, inconvenient facts are by nature partisan. And racist.

Of course. There is absolutely nothing racist about telling a black guy that he's better off without equal rights as long as you pay him off well enough. Nothing at all. Who wouldn't prefer money to their rights and equal dignity under the law?

Well, apparently chickie and michael would.

So which of your rights, chickie, should we start taking away from you for the mere fact of being white?

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

And how much would you sell them for?

Whatever may be the limitations, I believe that the Althouse blog should ever encourage that continued and fearless sifting and winnowing of wit from chafe by which alone the truth can be found.

And who wrote any such thing or held any opinion like that on this thread?

It's plainly obvious that's how you feel. You substitute economic changes for the actual, meaningful massive political change of gaining rights. And then not pandering to the people opposed to those rights, as the Republicans did.

It is plainly obvious that you have a screw loose. It is plainly obvious that you think you know what people think based on what the voices in your head tell you they are thinking. The voices are wrong.

It is plainly obvious that you cannot explain the horrible and clear decline of the black community in those cities that have been run by Democrats for half a century. You turn to the voices in your head for answers.
