Can dazed and disappointed Bernie-ites hear the call of Donald Trump?

Here's the full transcript of last night's scripted, teleprompted speech from Donald Trump.
I understand the responsibility of carrying the mantle and I will never, ever let you down. Too much work, too many people, blood, sweat, and tears. Never going to let you down. I will make you proud of your party and our movement. That's what it is, a movement.
Insert obvious joke. Who writes this stuff? Maybe the idea is to write lines that sound like what he might ad lib.
Recent polls have shown that I'm beating Hillary Clinton and with all of her many problems and the tremendous mistakes that she's made — and she has made tremendous mistakes — we expect our lead to continue to grow and grow substantially.
Trump loves his bigness words: tremendous... tremendous... grow and grow substantially.

Trump, thanking his supporters, says he's going to work to win support from everybody, especially the Bernie Sanders people:
To all of those Bernie Sanders voters who have been left out in the cold by a rigged system of superdelegates, we welcome you with open arms.
Why would Sanders supporters go for Trump? The idea is: rigged system. Later in the speech he comes back to that:
Why would politicians want to change a system that's totally rigged in order to keep them in power? That's what they're doing, folks. Why would politicians want to change a system that's made them and their friends very, very wealthy?...  We can't fix the rigged system by relying on — and I mean this so, so strongly — the very people who rigged it. And they rigged it.
Rigged, rigged, rigged. If you don't like the rigged system, you'd better vote for Trump. He's your only hope. That's the pitch to Bernie-ites.

Trump picks up a couple of Hillary's themes: fighting for you and bringing us together*:
Now, I know some people say I'm too much of a fighter. My preference is always peace, however. And I've shown that. I've shown that for a long time. I've built an extraordinary business on relationships and deals that benefit all parties involved. Always. My goal is always, again, to bring people together. But if I'm forced to fight for something I really care about, I will never, ever back down. And our country will never, ever back down.

I've fought for my family, I've fought for more business, I've fought for my employees. And now, I'm going to fight for you, the American people. Like nobody has ever fought before. And I'm not a politician fighting, I'm me. You're going to see some real good things happen. Just remember this, I'm going to be your champion. I'm going to be America's champion....
This was the one line I remembered on my own: I'm going to be your champion.
We love our country. We love our country. But we can turn this all around. We're going to do it by putting America first....

The beauty of America first is that it brings us all together. Every American worker of every background is entitled to the same benefits, protections, and rights and privileges. It's got to be that way....

We're going to rebuild our inner cities, which are absolutely a shame and so sad. We're going to take care of our African-American people that have been mistreated for so long. We're going to make you and your family safe, secure, and prosperous. Prosperous again. Together, we will put the American people first again.
He's trying to leaven the right-wing nationalism with left-wing empathy. Can the dazed and disappointed Bernie-ites hear his call? It seems impossible... and yet, I think: Hillary.

* Actually, "Bring Us Together" was a slogan of the Richard Nixon campaign in 1968. It originated on a sign held by a 13-year-old girl named Vicki Lynne Cole:

Nixon's speechwriter William Safire put this into his victory speech:
I saw many signs in this campaign, some of them were not friendly; some were very friendly. But the one that touched me the most was one that I saw in Deshler, Ohio, at the end of a long day of whistle-stopping. A little town. I suppose five times the population was there in the dusk. It was almost impossible to see, but a teenager held up a sign, "Bring Us Together." And that will be the great objective of this administration at the outset, to bring the American people together.
The "again" got dropped, perhaps as clutter, perhaps because it raises a distracting question, the same distracting question raised by Trump's "Make America Great Again": Again? When were we ever together/great?

Then I realized that most of the Bernie-ites have been dazed ( and confused ) since before the start of the campaign.

I don't think Bernie's supporters are ready to vote for Trump today, but depending on how the Democratic convention goes, they might be ready come November. If they get shut out at the convention, Bernie's delegates browbeaten into voting for Hillary to give her the "overwhelming support" she doesn't have at the moment, and few of their concerns make it into the party platform, they might either be so mad they vote against Hillary by voting for Trump, or see his planned policies might actually benefit them more. Today they still have hope the Democratic Party cares more about them than Trump does, but that could change in Philadelphia.

We were great in WW 2 and about 20 years thereafter. But blacks and women will rightly complain and that's Hillary's counter.

Trump wrote that speech by himself. His appeal is emotional; not intellectual or on policy.

Trump has two forms of his slogan.
The short form: Make America Great
The long form: Make America Great Again
The long form is for those who want nuance.

Inga said...

Hell no.

bagoh20 said...

The only way to make America great again is to stop expecting the government to do it for us. Trump, Sanders, and Clinton supporters all want a government savior. It should be an easy switch for a lot of the Bernie people, but which bullshit promise they go for is up for grabs. Trump seeming to be more different from the past has the easier sell.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Ah, echoes of the BLM movement in Althouse's rhetorical When were we ever great? comment at the end there. Of course populists tend to harken back to an idyllic period or pull at sentimentalist feelings in the populace. And just as certainly there will always be a naysayer who can point to a group or ideal or common practice that coincided with the "great" earlier time.

For those of us who grew up in the 60's and 70's the greatness was self-evident in the way the USA dominated the Space Race and we were allowed to be inspired by the great Saturn 5 and Delta rockets pushed mankind higher and farther. That was great! Standards of living and wages rose year after year with brief interruptions for the occasional correction or crisis (like the Oil Crisis) but we bounced back stronger and greater. If I had time I could write 1000 words on that wonderful patriotic feeling of growing up American and the sense that almost everyone was cheering for our athletes when Spitz swam so well in Munich, and Jenner won the decathlon in Montreal and the boys won the hockey final in Lake Placid...

Now Obama has converted NASA into a global warming propaganda factory and Muslim outreach endeavor. The only thing today's kids know about Space Shuttles is we lost two in horrific accidents and we don't have any now. We used to thrill to every launch, now we hear brief snippets about astronauts on the ISS but who are they, and how did they get there? Wages have been flat now for over seven years, with the weakest slowest most tenuous "recovery" in history. A bounce back that fails to reach the zenith of the previous high, in fact fails to do much of anything. Fewer people working than the last crisis in the 70's. And an olympics looming that will just bring more commentary on whether a "woman" with XY chromosomes can compete against the ones with XX...

And out of more than 300 million citizens the best our great nation can do is an unindicted felon and an orange buffoon. For the first time in my life I do view the choices as one of the lesser of two evils.

Again

The Democrats have destroyed the African-American community. They've destroyed the families for their own political gain, creating a cycle of dependency on Hillary's 'village'. The amount of children raised in single parent homes is 72%. That's three times what it was prior to 1964. Couldn't we have wiped out Jim Crow without destroying the family structure.

And this works for Madison's elite liberals. They get the votes. They get the comfort of saying they care. They get to chant shame at everyone else, and lob accusations of racism at anyone who doesn't agree with them. Other communities pay the price; some with diminished lives and others picking up the tab.

But most importantly they keep those people they exploit in isolated, violent communities so they don't spread out and rain on their gluten free, vegan parades.

In history we have never been fully together. But maybe some major policy changes can help strengthen the African-American community, again

The country once fought to free them from Southern ownership. Now they need to be freed from dependence on Hillary's village.

I'd rather take my chances with a shock jock than with one more particularly corrupt liberal politician who is guaranteed to move the country further in the wrong direction, chasing Europe off the abyss. The key to understanding Trump and how he would lead is to understand the raw entrepreneur. If it seems like he just throws things up against the wall to see what sticks, it's because he does. That's how most entrepreneurs I know operate. The MBA grad may believe in mission statements and five-year plans but the entrepreneur works in the moment. "Make America a Great Again" is as good as you're gonna get with Trump.

The entrepreneur learns by talking with others far more than by reading books. He or she (more men entrepreneurs by far than women) is gut-driven but does not despise data. He just needs an expert he trusts to explain the data to him. Entrepreneurs are visionaries. They envision the glory and majesty of the buildings they will build. They are also hopeless optimists. Failures are immediately forgotten. Tomorrow is more favored than yesterday but today is king. Trust me, Trump has already forgotten about the Judge Curiel misstep.

Trump as president is a work in progress. I think he'll do fine as a president though I'm certain there will be bumps in the road. There will be surprises but most of them will be positive ones. Hillary will be exactly what you know she'll be ... and that's why I'm voting for Trump.

Hillary Clinton is a very well known quantity. A Hillary Clinton presidency will largely be a continuation of the Obama presidency. If you truly believe that what Obama has done as President has made America stronger, wealthier, happier, and better off then Hillary is the obvious choice. It's known that at the very least she is capable of deceit and putting her own interests ahead of the security of the American people. And depending on whether you believe that certain Federal guidelines are Law or just recommendations, she could be in fact an unconvicted criminal.

On the other hand, so far what we know of what Trump presidency may be like is based purely on his personality, which is mercurial to say the least. He takes things personally and won't let things go. He's touchy. And many people are scared of what he might do as president. But the one thing I have said and continue to say about a theoretical Trump presidency that is almost assuredly true is that he will be heavily scrutinized from all fronts. There are a lot of people on both sides of the political spectrum that are truly terrified of his presidency. The media, the political establishment, the Supreme Court, and probably a majority of the public will be hypercritical of him out of fear and concern. You may argue that this is the case with any president, but I believe that it will be orders of magnitude more severe with Trump.

This is my (maybe completely wrong) arm-chair analysis of Trump:

I don't believe that Trump is an unhinged lunatic.

I think he loves himself and loves being loved. I think he likes beauty pageants, flashy ostentatious stuff like big shiny buildings and casinos, he loves impressing people, and above all else being the center of attention.

I think he's quick to anger and quick to forgive as long as the person who he feels wronged him apologizes. He likes bowling over people with the strength of his personality. He loves being unpredictable. He doesn't mind changing positions on issues if he thinks it'll benefit him. He says over the top stuff to get attention and dominate the discussion.

None of these traits indicate to me a crazy person, or a sadist or some angry person filled with hate who has it in for some group of people necessarily. It might indicate narcissism. It may indicate a reckless nature. I don't know.

I also think that Trump will probably find himself hemmed in as president. He may want to make some big moves but the congress, the Supreme Court, the media, and the public at large may make such moves difficult or at least unpopular. As I said before, Trump loves being loved. He doesn't strike me as a President who would go wildly against popular opinion.

This doesn't mean that I think he'd be a great president, just perhaps an ineffectual one or less effectual than many people hope or fear.

Again, I freely admit could be way off on all this.

It was intriguing that the overall sense was they felt "betrayed" by Google. Not betrayed by Clinton for endangering American Intel (over the past few months purusing Reddit, they seem to just shrug off the home brew server issue) but personally betrayed by a giant corporation they "loved"--which I guess speaks to the Culture of Narcissism. Some started to agree that Trump was right--"the system is rigged" "this is a real life House of Cards" and someone started a "BernoutsforTrump" meme.

These are mainly young people, so you could write it off to immaturity, but they are voters, and I sense that over the next few months many may support Trump. They seem to view him as a bit of a racist now, but when faced with a choice between someone that they feel personally betrayed them and a generic racist, I'm betting they punish the betrayer.

Not in a merely cosmetic, she looks older now way: contemporary Hillary could be eight-year-younger Hillary's mother.

Like some horribly exposed Dorianne Gray, something is consuming Hillary from within, all out of pace with the calendar. It may be related to her persisting hacking cough, it may not. But it's quite easy to see her being chosen as the Democratic nominee as not only the zenith but also the culmination of her political career.

You might want to go back and check, believe that it's a pre-planned press meme to equate him with mere mortals without alterman’s skills and monk like endurance, when they say "scripted and tele prompted" best we can see from here, and we can see pretty well the only thing on the teleprompter was talking points he wanted to be sure he covered , including a few questions his staff asked that he wanted to be sure to answer, everything else was spontaneous, unlike Ms. H, Mr. O. and his previous opponents. Including Mr. Romney who took a good shot, but you can only do so much with poll tested messaging. Of course your pTb will never correct people or press on stuff like this since he wants to maintain this advantage of his, perhaps forever. This one of the reason people are uncomfortable with him. He seems omniscient, few people know any one like this, so does he walk on water too?

Most of them will go for Hillary. And by most I mean over 50%.

The next largest majority won't vote or will go third party.

A small percentage will vote Trump. Maybe less than 5%.

This feels about right to me. The key will be how many sit out. Since she is so repugnant and the enthusiasm for her is so low, this number could be substantial.

By the time November rolls around, Trump will have dug himself into a hole so deep (as he can't help himself, his mouth rules him. He won't be muzzled by the RNC for long) Clinton will look like Pollyanna.

Re: Mr. Sanders. Grandma remembers a joint discussion with your pTb where after Mr. Sanders listed all the things he believed in, your pTb said he and Sanders only disagreed about a fraction, and perhaps how to get from where we are to there. Wager this is how he gets a large fraction of the socialist's vote. By committing to do the best he can to get results not a how. By not having a policy but means and intensity and ability to convert those that don't believe and gain their support. Grandma said the last time she saw this level of intensity was when she watched some Jew that could walk on water. He had loving followers, fans, who would and did put up with all kinds of abuse, including stoning and drew many more haters. Of course he didn't last and suffered greatly to change the course of your poor planet for a short period of (our) time. But now you worship dirt, returning to a time before this fellow. So sad. In a while we expect we'll need to fertilize your planet again with our insects. AGW is a strange reason to ignore common sense and allowing your people to vote with their pocketbook but other planets in other universes have destroyed for more foolish reasons.

Take it from somebody who was around for the last couple of times this has happened. The issues cited here, and by the commentariat in general, are irrelevant. They are cited by many, including Trump and Sanders supporters, only because we do not have a term in our current lexicon that expresses the zeitgeist.

This is a "throw the bums out" election.

Trump and Sanders supporters are on the same page. Things ain't working. Time for the old guard to pass into the history books and let somebody new try to straighten things out.

The Donald vs. Hillary? Add together the number of votes garnered by Trump and Sanders and you might get some inkling as to what is "blowing in the wind".

Some other words from the "blowing in the wind" guy:

Come gather ’round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you is worth savin’
Then you better start swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won’t come again
And don’t speak too soon
For the wheel’s still in spin
And there’s no tellin’ who that it’s namin’
For the loser now will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin’

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don’t stand in the doorway
Don’t block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There’s a battle outside and it is ragin’
It’ll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin’

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don’t criticize
What you can’t understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is rapidly agin’
Please get out of the new one if you can’t lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin’

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is rapidly fadin’
And the first one now will later be last
For the times they are a-changin’

It's not surprising that a wealthy real estate developer is frequently sued. Money attract lawsuits.

It's more surprising that Democrats support a candidate under FBI investigation.

"It's not surprising that a wealthy real estate developer is frequently sued."

I was on jury duty one time in Newport Beach CA. Newport is full of wealthy real estate guys.

During voir dire, the judge asked if anyone had been sued. Everybody in the jury pool raised their hands.

The case wound up with the case being a mistrial on voir dire.

OMG, we've got another Inga on our hands. I find the constant one-note ad hominem haranguing by Miriam to be both tedious and boorish at best, and a huge waste of time at worst. She totally spoils the experience of the blog.

Althouse has been my go-to blog for several years now to read intelligent commentary from a range of political positions. But I have to say that I will now be avoiding the blog posts in which she comments, which saddens me. But I've done this before with Inga, and Garage, and Crack, and Doubting Thomas. I have better things to do than waste my time with their stupidity.
