"'Sorry Hillary, I was running on C.P. time,' de Blasio responded to a mixture of chuckles and gasps."

"CPT is known as 'colored people time' the stereotype that African Americans generally tell as a reason for being late to an event or a traditionally black event not beginning on time."

He was responding to Hillary's "thanks for the endorsement, Bill. Took you long enough."

UPDATE: Much more detail on the context and the attempt to explain here.

Should be clarified that this in in the context of a skit, and CP time is later clarified to mean cautious politician time. Compare to Ali G Oscars yellow people joke.

Every country in the world can be placed on a spectrum when it comes to scheduling, according to INSEAD professor Erin Meyer. From most punctual on the left to least punctual on the right, here it is:
Punctual: Germany, Switzerland, etc..
"Flexible": S.Arabia, India, Nigeria, Kenya.

"As you get closer to the equator, the pace of life seems to slow, said Andy Case, Latin America analyst for iJET Intelligent Risk Systems, a travel security company based in Annapolis, Md."
"Low-income countries have cultures, in general, in which the value of time is relatively low," said Genevieve Giuliano, professor of urban planning and policy at USC.

It's OK. White people married to black people can't be racist or something.

Bay Area Guy said...

Yeah, deBlasio is a married to a black, ex-Lesbian, (Seinfeld disclaimer: not that there's anything wrong with that) so he is down with black people, and has implicit permission to make self-deprecating racial jokes, I think.

The rules are known to change, though, in a nano-second, depending on the political climate, so, who knows, maybe BLM will decry deBlasio as a vicious racist at his next campaign function.

@Althouse, let me know if you ever meet a Lefty who isn't deep down a racist, homophobic, anti-Semetic jerk. Not that I'm holding my breath.

CP Time? From the mouth of a New York progressive socialist jerkoff? My stars and garters, who would have thought of such. Ha ha, I'm rolling on the floor and laughing at the (half) wit of De Blasio.

That said, I would have cut him some slack if he had said he was running on "Greek" time. I've had a Greek son in law for nine years now, and if he ever makes an appointment or a meeting or a dinner on time, it will be the first time. But that's the way he is, and you learn to adjust. It's easier than trying to get him to change his habits.

The mask drops. As it always does, because the left's "good intentions" always blinds themselves to their own racism. But their's is good racism, right? Not like everyone else's.

Maybe someway when PC goes its final way out the door, people will be able to stereotype without virtue signalling rising up against it.

As it is today if you insult a white guy.

I think most "cultural groups" have similar terminology. For example, my wife is often running on JST; "Jewish Standard Time". Which used to be known as "fashionably late".

JAORE said...

I was in my 40s when I first heard the term CP time. In a diversity course, by black participants. They used it in a light, self-deprecating manner. They were shocked, and a bit incredulous when I asked what CPT meant.

But, yeah, a pass for DiBla.... he be lefty.

Among the diplomatic crowd apparently everyone knows the rules for telling the other diplomatic delegations times for a party. You tell the Americans 9:00 PM & the Italians 7:00PM & everyone shows up at the same time at 9:00.

I've heard the equivalent called "Polish Time" and "Filipino Time." Self-described by the ethnicities in question. No one gets offended unless you are otherwise being a prick or someone wants to start a fight.

I suspect that explains the hypocrisy. When it comes to Republicans, they want to start a fight. Otherwise, they don't give a crap.

Leigh said...

Agree w/@HoodlumDoodlum. The entire thing was rehearsed. Fell flat, obviously, and the humor entirely escaped me. Not being a Yankee, I'd never heard of "CP" time either. But in any event, it was all clearly rehearsed by all three people on the stage. Maybe "central pantsuit time" might have been an eyelash more amusing. But whatever. The whole thing was plainly and unsurprisingly stupid.

And @BigMike is quite right. The left's prejudice is so pervasive, ingrained and blatant, it's no wonder the media completely ignores it. "Neatly creased pants!" "Clean-cut and articulate!" "No Negro dialect unless he wants one!"

Try this experiment, which I've done several times with identical results: ask any leftist if they are concerned or bothered by the fact that roughly 80% of all abortions are of black babies (or "fetuses," if you prefer -- whatever noun you pick has no effect on the experiment). They will all tell you -- every single one of them, every single time -- that "well, it's really for the best because those aborted black children would have had such a terrible 'quality of life'" ... or words to that effect. Then ask them if they don't find it incredibly elitist and racist for them to make such an assumption about an entire race of people. You'll get a blank stare.

Holy fuck Seinfeld just had a "BL" as in "beautiful lineswoman" joke, about the character played by Marlee Matlin Jerry calls beautiful.

George said "she is a BL" and Jerry said "what" and George enunciates "beautiful lineswoman."

Guess ya had to be there at the time to appreciate that show.

It certainly has nothing to do with me and my ability to convey ideas/thoughts/concepts. Nothing.

Fact it, I have had to sacrifice fame and fortune by staying kinda not known ONLY SO YOU PEOPLE CAN'T RESORT TO THE AD HOMINEM.

I consider your collective decency enough to continue my teaching you the focusing of argument and argument alone.

Actually, jitbag, we don't give a crap about whatever racist tropes leftist progressives come up with. But what an incident like this does is illustrate the puke-inducing hypocrisy of the progressive democrat party press, politicians, and its members and supporters. As the first comment in this thread states, if republicans had done this, the screams of RACIST would be echoing from NYC to Los Angeles and the high dudgeon would not ever be excised. Progressives would hold it up as an example of the hateful bigotry of republicans forever more. But since a couple of scummy douchey corrupt crap-ass democrats did it, schmucks like Static Ping must sweat and strain to twist this around republicans' necks while studiously shielding democrats from criticism. This rubbish is straight from the democrat party USA playbook- democrat says/does something illegal/unseemly, complain loudly about republicans until all is forgotten.

"Self-described by the ethnicities in question"- So now Hills and deBlasio are Colored People? Aren't progressives awesome- Now they can change into various ethnicities as it suits them!

Is "CP Time" really a thing? I never heard of that. But if that's what DeBlasio meant, I don't see how he escapes fallout. Just being married to a black woman doesn't give a white guy cover for that.

Yeah, the whole thing was staged, and done poorly. In any event, it doesn't matter that DeBlasio mouthed the hine. The Hildabeast has to own it too.

Wilbur's second wife was a black woman. We were invited to the wedding of mutual friends, to be held at a church in Liberty City. The invitation said the wedding was at 5:00pm.

My Midwestern upbringing compelled me to be there at 4:45. My wife tried to tell me the wedding won't start until after 6:00 and no one will be there. I insisted upon punctuality.

We arrived at 4:45 to an empty church. The next people to arrive got there at five minutes to six.

At least we had a nice quiet chat for an hour.

Jane the Actuary said...

Never heard of black people being stereotyped as habitually late. But we used to have a "diversity officer" who liked to write about how important it was to have cultural competence, and his favorite example was the fact that Latin Americans always added 2 hours to the specified time on the invitation. He himself was Latino, and wrote about this as if it was a good practice, something to be proud of, which has never made any sense to me. If you want your event to start at 9 pm, then why not specify that, and not 7, on the invitation?

ganderson said...

In Tom Wolfe's "A Man in Full", one to the black characters, Reginald White II, AKA "Reggie Too White" always arrives early to avoid being accused of operating on CPT. My (admittedly limited) experience with black people tells me it's a real thing.

(1) Yes, most of us do give a crap. People deserve respect. We accept that Polish people can tell Polack jokes, and inner city Blacks call each other by the n-word. But de Blasio is an old white man, and should know better. However he's wealthy, and off on the Left side of the spectrum being a wealthy liberal is a free pass to be as obnoxious as one wishes.

(2) Damn right I want a fight. But you're the one who started it. Now go find someone to cry to that those stinking Republicans are punching back.

First time I had CPT explained to be it was by a black co-worker (professional, two post-grad degrees). She said it was about blacks staying up late and socializing after hours. Have not tested this. but if you stay up late, it can be harder to get up in the morning,

Static Ping said...

Michael Fitzgerald & Big Mike: You are misinterpreting my meaning. The fact that the mayor can get away with this when others cannot is horribly unfair.

I'm saying that black/Polish/Filipinos/etc. don't particularly care if you discuss their lateness. Most of them would agree with you and get a good laugh, perhaps regale a relevant anecdote. The problem is if they dislike you, they will take offense not because the comments were offensive because they dislike you.

That's the problem here. The comment itself is meaningless. The offended don't care. The offended only care about the orator. It's just an excuse to say "I hate you" without being honest about it.

Michael Fitzgerald said...

Damn You, Static Ping! You didn't even lower yourself to insult me back! Your even-handed clarification has offended me- I must take offense! To the fainting couch!
