"The end of the world is coming in a second… I’m your death. I hate democracy. I’m a terrorist."

Shouted by a woman rambling through the streets of Moscow and holding up the severed head of a young girl.

Could be part of Putin's PR campaign - "Warm up to Russia, we're tough on terror"

This was one of the most disturbing stories I'd ever seen. Which in a time of amazing disturbances is saying something. Why the world won't unite and demand that this religion reform itself and move into modernity does not make sense.

Big deal. It was just an everyday Muslim at work executing infidels for allah.

It's a little difficult to sever this story from the notion that women are sometimes insane.

My personal theory is that Jihad, like the terrorism we saw in the 60s and 70s, is going to attract a certain percentage of people who just want to hurt and kill others, but desire an ideological reason for their depravity.

She hates democracy...in Russia? I don't think that word means what she thinks it means.

Is Putinland a democracy?

I suspect it's going to be a buyer's market for Muslim nannies in Moscow.

I wouldn't want to be the parent who had chosen this woman to be the nanny.

Must have been another one of those Buddhists. Or Hindus. Or something. I have it on good authority that Muslims aren't any more likely to kill people for no reason other than religion than any others.

Police officials remain mystified as to the motive for the attack. The investigation continues. In other news, AG Lynch announced a new initiative to identify hate crimes against Muslims and other minorities. President Obama spent the weekend golfing and shopping for mirrors.

Oops, wrong news cast. President Putin announced a new air campaign in Uzbekistan beginning immediately, targeting terrorist training camps and mosques. In other news, Moscow Police have shot more than 100 Uzbek prisoners who were attempting to escape. A plebiscite was held on the new bombing campaign and 102% of the Russian population voted "yes". Slightly more than 100 voters of Uzbek ethnicity voted "no".

So I guess women cal also be terrorists? And a baby sitter? How many refugees from Syria present as an ordinary woman who might take care of kids. How would you vet this woman?

What makes you think we're any more a democracy than Russia?

Absent further evidence, there's no reason to suggest it does.

Rather, she seems to be a deranged woman shouting random declamations. She could just as easily be shouting about radio waves commanding her to kill being transmitted to her from orbiting satellites.

She doesn't hate democracy or its minority ruling classes, but rather someone else's democracy and minority ruling classes. She is, in fact, a good democrat, and pro-choicer, too; but, she violated the first rule of the penumbra, and brought her baggage into the public square. Sharing disarmed and decapitated bodies in the public space is considered impolite and causes material damage to the reputation and profits of Planned Parenthood et al.

..but she wasn't. She was shouting Allahu Akbar. We can try and claim it doesn't really have anything to do with Islam, but evidence is scant for that view.

So let me see if I have this straight:

A man shoots up an abortion clinic. He is a) mentally ill and b) a Christian. He says he did it to save the lives of the babies being aborted. The media and the political left blame the Christianity instead of the mental illness.

A woman beheads a small child. She is a) mentally ill and b) a Muslim. She says she did it to further the goals of Islam. Is the media and the political left going to blame Islam instead of the mental illness?

Note the disparity here:

1. We know the man was mentally ill because his family said so and there were numerous indications of it. However we only know the woman is mentally ill because of the act itself -- at least I don't think that act could be done by a sane person.

2. The man's act was misguidedly geared towards saving the lives of children. The woman's act was geared towards taking the life of a child.

Jim S. said...

And of course, the big question:

a) Does Christianity sanction such acts as those of the man?
b) Does Islam sanction such acts as those of woman?

I call this the big question, since I suspect many Christians on the political right will have the opposite responses of those on the political left: they will blame the man's actions on his mental illness rather than his religion, and blame the woman's actions on her religion rather than her mental illness. But if there is a difference between what these two religions teach about such acts, this can be resolved. If Christianity does not teach that actions like the man's are acceptable, then the man was not acting in consonance with his religion, so we are justified in blaming the mental illness. If Islam does teach that actions like the woman's are acceptable, then she could have been acting in consonance with her religion, and we do not have to appeal to her (hypothetical, unproven) mental illness to explain her actions.

Hey Cookie - Reports are that she was mad because her husband took a second wife (I can't imagine why with a catch like her . . . ) - which religion is that permits multiple wives? Unitarianism? Lutheranism?

And if we note that "this woman" just happens to be Muslim, we're "Islamophobic."

Phobic? You mean, am I afraid of the type of person who is capable of beheading a four-year-old and setting the parents' home on fire, or gunning down 14 co-workers with automatic weapons, or [insert the murder rampage you find most disturbing], all in the name of that particular religion?

Hell yes.

But she's not. She's shouting the call to jihad.

As some other wag on this great blog once observed,
"Moderate muslims don't want to kill you. Moderate muslims want radical muslims to kill you."

Have to say that I think this is an actual case of a very mentally ill person committing an insane act due to mental illness. Like the untold numbers of crazy people who rave on about being Jesus and God etc. and who sometimes act out aggressively. I read the entire article and the totality of the circumstances convinced me it's mental illness and not a conscious, voluntary jihadism.

Agreed. As noted elsewhere, seriously/dangerously mentally ill people populate existing paradigms with their mental illness all the time, but that doesn't necessarily indicate a genuine belief in that paradigm or that they were sincerely motivated by it.

Earlier Althouse was pointing out the state of North Carolina's ridiculous stance that it can tell a Jew how to practice Judaism.

Here we have the Leftist Robert Cook telling people who say they are acting in support of Islam that they are practicing Islam wrong.

Robert Cook is no smarter than a North Carolina prison official.

Chicken or the egg. What is it about Islam that it attracts so many homicidal maniacs? What is it about homicidal maniacs that they're so attracted to Islam.........The axe murderer as nanny would make for an interesting story line on Downton Abbey.

Islam creates 'homocidal manics', William.
When the central tenant of your religion is,"Convert or die" many believers take that as lisence.
