The tendency of men in groups, in bars, to take to singing...

IN THE COMMENTS: Laslo Spatula said, "Dear God your headline made me think of this":

I laughed a lot, and — can you believe it?! — I have never watched that scene. Never saw the movie "Top Gun" or even vaguely wanted to. Never saw "An Officer and A Gentleman" either, and I get the 2 movies mixed up.

Dear God your headline made me think of this.

Can I start the morning over?

I am Laslo.

Obama clip: Some of this is still the hangover from what happened in 2007 and 2008 and this is part of the reason why we have to keep our foot to the accelerator in terms of doing the things that need to be done to keep the economy growing and keep it strong. We should not let up from the progress that has been made.

Howie Carr: It's the world's longest hangover, Mark.

Mark Steyn: Yeah, and I love he's the greatest orator since Cicero and his line is when you're in the ninth year of the world's longest hangover, you just need to put your foot to the accelerator.

We're not yet to La Marseillaise vs. Deutschland über Alles, but we're getting there.

That's one of my favorite performing groups doing my favorite number...but the acoustics and recording quality are lousy.

Click here for the studio version. It might bring tears to your eyes.

Yeah, I've stopped going to bars because of all the singing.

I thought the recording was remarkable considering everything.

Maybe it's on your end, Bob. I could follow the basso line with my big toe.

I heard these guys in Vilnius, Lithuania. Beautiful.

I was in Brogen's at St. Simon's and a Don McLean song came on the radio. And the whole damn bar, men and women, sang American Pie. It was beautiful.

You remember the day the music died. (The damn NYT, missing the news again!).

I always get tears and a tug in my heart just seeing the title. Thank you for the link, they are great.

Another great rendition, with Chanticleer and the Navy Choir. Young men in uniform, performing precision harmony.

The conductor repeatedly signals for them to lower the volume. When he asks them for full volume, it fills the room and the soul.

DAMN.

Well, that's the most unAmerican thing I've heard so far today. Seriously, you should just self-deport at this point.

I watched a bit of "Hot Gun" once. . . . . .

@ holdfast

I've never seen The Godfather, any Rocky movies, and no desire to. The same me as Althouse for Top Gun or Officer and a Gentleman. Meh Also didn't see Saturday Night Fever until just a few months ago, being forced to watch by my husband. It was OK I guess. The song, however, made a whole lot more sense after seeing the movie.

I started to watch On Golden Pond. But couldn't get past The LOONS!!!! The LOOOOONS!!!! The acting was just horrible.

I guess I should self deport too.

@Bob Ellison,

Thanks for the link! I didn't know what piece they were singing. I could tell from the harmonies right quickly that it wasn't Renaissance, and then it became obviously a "conservative" 20th C composer. That much I got right. So, now I've got a name --- Biebl -- to go with the piece.

Among the Irish (including Irish Americans) this is what's known as a normal night at the pub.

I like it. A lot.

Conrad Veidt and his nefarious Nazis were singing "Die Wacht am Rhein."

Bob Ellison said...

YoungHegelian, good musicology there. Biebl's version is the best "Ave Maria" by far. I'm glad you picked it up.

Jason said...

I'm not a fan of Justin Biebl, but I didn't know he had a version of "Ave Maria!"

I used to know all the verses to "Sparrow in the Treetop." We would get around a piano in the bar that was my favorite in college. Knowing all the verses was a plus.

A buddy of mine started to go home with a woman who looked like Eleanor Roosevelt. Real "coyote ugly." We rescued him but were laughing so hard we were almost helpless.

Lots of beer.

Whoa! Whoa! Them's fightin' words, O'Malley!

Once in a drunken stupor me and my college buds locked arms and did a rendition of Piano Man while falling over in drunkenness. MY guess is, it wasn't very musical. But Short of that, we generally didnt' sing much. Unless we were doing karaoke.

I thought those kind of bars were dying out, what with gay marriage and all.

Saying that listening to Chanticleer reminds one of Tom Cruise is approximately the equivalent to saying that seeing a Rembrandt reminds one of Thomas Kinkade.

Top Gun, wow, 30 years ago...

I'm getting------ old...

The only reason to see them is to gain a deeper understanding of a true masterpiece - "Team America: World Police."

Paul Snively said...

Now let's ponder the irony of gay Tom Cruise singing to gay Kelly McGillis.

MacMacConnell said...

"Top Gun" is worth seeing for the flight scenes. Officer And A Gentleman is worth seeing for Greer's Triumph and Debra Winger when she was still hot.

My frat would occasionally break out in verses of "Barnacle Bill The Sailor" in bars.

The Godfather said...

If, in my misspent youth, I broke into song in bars, I have fortunately forgotten it.

But Althouse, you ought to see An Officer and a Gentleman (Top Gun you can skip if you want to; it's up to you). Think of An Officer and a Gentleman as an up-dated Great Gatsby, and you'll get the idea.

Top Gun takes on a whole new life when you watch it with Quentin Tarantino's take on it. It is all about homosexuality.

Why the hell would the studio care? We were at war.
