-17 here (NW Pa) @ 6AM. With the wind chill it's -4,314 degrees. Actually there is virtually no wind.

The only issue is the furnace struggles to keep up.

It dawned on me this morning, literally, that while Obama tans America freezes.

It would have been a great moment for him politically to go to Minneapolis or the slums of Chicago....to be in the cold...but no. Of course not. He doesn't do empathy.

Too busy watching trashy TV shows and hanging with his bros.

Fine with me. I'd be fine with him staying in Hawaii. Gives the rest of us time and space to focus.

Pretty cold. Actually, very cold, until youse Midwesterners check in.

Lets hope that the models for global warming are at least partially correct and that there is a positive feedback by water vapor in the atmosphere. If history is any guide, we could arrive at the end of our present interglacial age soon and return to a new ice age. That would be much more destructive than global warming. One can only hope that global warming will prevent the next ice age.

Well, dammit, let's burn down the EPA with coal fires, tear down eagle-killing windmill joke farms, ban green subsidies that only benefit Democrat/progressive business cronies, and cut down some trees to get some more damn CO2 in the sky. And outlaw stupid electric cars unless they convert to coal-fired turbines.

I am so tired of talking about the weather.

I am so tired of talking about the weather.

This has been overhyped.

We weren't even -20 with this outbreak. So Madison can continue its record string of time between consecutive -20 readings (last seen Xmas day 2000).

I'm sure people are suffering in the cold. But that's not what the hype is about.

We're still planting things in the garden down here in Fort Lauderdale. Batches of Rainbow Carrots until March or April, then Sweet Potatoes over the summer.

Arrived at work and the high efficiency furnace condensate hose was frozen. Fifteen minutes with a properly aimed torpedo heater did the trick.

The invention of the torpedo heater ranks right up there with the DVR and the microwave.

And it's 70 degrees here, so I have to turn on the airconditioner. Look, "Your position is old and wearisome, and your expression about it has been mightily tiresome, which is to say, I'm tired of hearing about how cold you are."

(Kidding, with affection.)

If you take the Hockey Stick at face value, and trim off the blade due to global warming, we are back to the French Revolution, fighting over scraps of bread while the major breadbaskets of the world face crop failures and glaciers expand, and only God knows what would be happening with the current lull in solar activity.

You can't have it both ways, either Global Warming has saved our collective butts from catastrophe thus far, or it is so weak it doesn't matter.

BTW, I moved to Vermont from Florida, I am betting we won't see any Floridians bragging about their weather between April and November.

Things must be improving in SE Wisconsin. The usual cast of characters have reappeared at my bird feeders. Yesterday, things were so bad only the juncos (and occasional finch) were willing to venture out from their roosts.

Why would anyone turn on the a/c at 70?

Open up a window!

Illuminati: Yesterday I was informed by our local NPR affiliate of the current (presumably mandatory) terminology to use. During an article about the cold in the eastern US, the "expert" consistently used the term "climate turbulence", where the day before I would have expected to hear "climate change".
Gotta keep up with the times, man!

There is some research, lately, on how a warmed Earth will have interruptions in seasonal weather. I guess that's a way to put it. Point 6 in this link. I don't know if 'climate turbulence' is a good phrase -- turbulence in aviation meteorology has a very well-defined description that could be hard to overcome.

In foxholes ringing the woods outside BASTOGNE in mid December 1944 the weather was -4, windy with icy rain. And when Patton's Fourth Armored and Third Army attacked night and day for 72 hours to relieve the siege it was at its very worst.

That was a Polar Vortex that often came down on Belgium, but it was the worst in memory of living men.
