"It looks like Harvard women got the last laugh on Larry Summers."

"When Summers was president of Harvard, he got in trouble for suggesting that women like Liz Warren might be innately deficient in science and math. But I guess she has Larry’s number, because she just made her first kill. And it’s Larry. She may be only a fresh-faced senator, while he’s the genius economist and hugely powerful former Clinton Treasury secretary who was supposed to be Obama’s pick as the next chairman of the Federal Reserve. But Liz objected, and took him out, making way for the Fed to promote current Vice Chairwoman Janet Yellen, a girl. We hear Yellen is pretty good at math, too. Oh, it’s all too delicious for words. But it gets even better for Liz...."

Boys against girls... she just made her first kill.

Laughing and killing...

Why does it appear that our elected officials, their staffs, and members of the bureaucracy act like the Russian Imperial court and bureaucracy from about 1890 to 1915? Nothing like putting palace intrigue ahead of actually governing. (And I am no Larry Summers fan)

Feminism is a plague.

Never mind that Summers did not get in trouble for "suggesting that women like Liz Warren might be innately deficient in science and math".

So I just haven't been following this at all. Was Sommers dumped solely for the "women scientists" issue from so long ago? And is Yellen in line as an affirmative action pick?

If a woman can't understand the difference between a characteristic of a population and a characteristic of an individual, then no, she's not particularly good at math.

He: Men, on the average, are taller than women.

She: That can't be true. Sally played basketball in college. She's a lot taller than YOU.

They: She showed him.

I have no problem with Summers going down. I'm pretty tired with the establishment candidates sliding from job to another; from one administration to another.

The irony of course is that "the girl" is just as much the establishment as Summers. (...Vice Chairwoman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Previously ... President and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, Chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers under President Bill Clinton, ... Professor Emerita at the University of California, Berkeley's Haas School of Business.).

Meanwhile, the comments at the linked story are pretty brutal. This is the Herald, not the Globe.

He suggested no such thing--but once something gets into The Narrative™, there's no getting it back out again, is there?

Larry did not suggest women are innately deficient in science and math, he posited the idea as theory during a discussion with the intention of later refuting the theory.

Larry is often lacking in patience and social graces, and therefore capable of rubbing people the wrong way.

Larry has strong beliefs re: economic policy.

Barack has strong beliefs re: the role of government re: redistribution of income.

Larry's beliefs re: economic policy are inconsistent with Barack's beliefs re: redistribution of income.

Barack will nominate an individual with beliefs consistent with Barack's beliefs re: redistribution of income.

People rubbed the wrong way are a convenience re: Barack not nominating Larry.

I have no clue as to whether Summers is more qualified than Yellen, but it's disappointing that it apparently didn't matter.

Warren is intensely prejudiced. Perhaps it is also personal. Let the biased equalization effort continue. Is her claim to minority status part of that effort?

I bet Summers turned it down. He is no fool like the Government Medea wants to make us with this suggestion.

When the FED stops the inflation money pump, then the stock market will crash and dollar re-valuation crisis will be blamed on the sitting FED Chairman and that poor lady appointee is going to take the heat.

Thank god this is not about something so irrelevant as monetary policy.

My understanding is that Yellen wanted to keep printing money full bore, while Summers wanted to begin tightening things up again. Now that's a policy difference worth debating.

But if Margary Eagan wants to paint this as boys vs. girls and Fauxcahontas vs. Wall Street, well I suppose that plays well to the low info crowd.

I wonder if Ms. Eagan has read the headline they attached to her article. If so, I wonder if she even gets that it directly contradicts the message she's trying to sell.

The fake Indian just claimed her first scalp. marvelous. Now we are going to get a fake Fed Reserve chairman who will lead the band as the ship slowly sinks. Good catch Henry, the analogy is obvious even a blind man can see it.

Wince said...

Beside Eagan ignoring the fanfare among "Wall Street types" with Summers being passed over, she argues...

When Summers was president of Harvard, he got in trouble for suggesting that women like Liz Warren might be innately deficient in science and math.

My understanding is that Warren's problems with data were instead intentional and ideological, rising to the level of "scientific misconduct".

The writers make extravagant and false claims to originality and priority of research. There appear to be serious errors in their use of statistical bases which result in grossly mistaken functions and comparisons. Some of their conclusions cannot be obtained even from their flawed findings. The authors have made their raw data unavailable so that its accuracy cannot be independently checked. In my opinion, the authors have engaged in repeated instances of scientific misconduct.

The market isn't always right, but it's worth noting that Apple stock took a tumble after the death of Steve Jobs and that--worldwide--the markets rallied on news that Summers was out.

Larry J said...

From what I heard yesterday but have not confirmed, Summers was in favor of ending the quantitative easing ($85 billion a month being added to the money supply) and low interest rate policies that have done nothing positive for several years. That's why the stock market soared yesterday when he announced his withdrawl. The woman who'll likely get the nomination is in favor of keeping things as they are. The stock market is addicted to low interest rates and QE forever.

Summers made a conjecture while at Harvard. It was politically incorrect, and it has been twisted ever since. Pretty soon, he will be blending female puppies.

Nixon was a liberal. Kennedy was a conservative. The Republicans were founded to defeat slavery and were the force behind the civil rights movement. The Soviet Union killed more people than Hitler dreamed of killing, and Hitler was a socialist.

Lefties can't digest these facts.

There's something about her that reminds me not of the feminine per say, but of the more soft-spoken, serious, earnest Americans you see speaking on old newsreels and tapes ... very-1930s through early-1960s.

Wow. Such rhetoric. I wonder if this clear appeal to violence will go unnoticed by the liberal press. Heck, Sarah Palin was crucified for far less by the media.

James Taranto of the WSJ pointed out the author's hypocricy in his Best of the Web today:

Two New Tones in One!

■"Violent Imagery Must Go: Now someone actually has shot a gun at Gabrielle Giffords, also a prime target on Palin's 'hit list' of 20 politicians singled out last year for favoring health-care reform. . . . I don't know if Sarah Palin and her lock n' load set have it in them to also admit they feel chastened and rebuked, to announce, today, no matter what, an immediate change in tone. But if not, they're done."--Margery Eagen, Boston Herald, Jan. 9, 2011

There are lies, damned lies, and academic bullshit that has a half-life greater than Uranium.

Though Summers never said it, in a way that statement is true. It's not "women like Liz" that are deficient in math. It's just Liz.

Super. Warren will get us a chick head of fed. Wall Street, evil evil Wall Street, will be happy to get her based on the market reaction to Larry S throwing in the towel. She is more of the same. Cheap money. A little Jimmie Carter inflation will round out the term of our poor dear leader, so dumb and confused a man. Sad moments when affirmative action collides with the real world.

He didn't "suggest" any such thing. He was aware of the fact that more men (not boys, since sex differences show up during and after puberty) have have more math-talented people on the high end than women. At IQ's around 140, men:women is nearly 2:1.
