"There wasn't a thought of 'I'm gonna get in trouble' or 'Should I say something?'"

"It was more 'Holy cow this hot teacher is into me!'"
"She came to me first," he said. "She initiated it by telling me she had a dream, where in that dream we eventually kissed."

[Laura Elizabeth Whitehurst's former student Michael] Cooper said that he was "a hormonal 17-year-old" who saw an opportunity and "just went with it"....

Sounds about right. Most 17 year old boys are pretty hormonal. They'd probably screw a cow if it winked at them.

Second that, but the headline "Calif. teacher who allegedly had baby by underage student suspected of sleeping with other teens" vindicates the new wheeze:

Your kid is more likely to be abused by a union teacher than a Catholic priest.

'Holy cow she's into me' - is at least the honest and authentic reaction of a horny hormones-a-ragin' 17 year old boy.

She's a teacher and like any authority figure, we expect our teachers to behave themselves. What was she thinking?

p.s. your pedophilia tag is misplaced. You're looking for ephobilia.

I don't think the agenda media will go with that angle at all.

I propose that we should solve this problem with a redefinition of the relationship between teacher and student to include such loving, caring bonds as these.

After all, the moral disapprobation of "pedophilia" is merely a social construct, and like all other social constructs is an anachronistic remnant of a formerly prudish christian era, worthy - no an imperative! - of being torn down in the name of personal freedom.

What would you expect from a 17 year old who is getting hit on by an older woman who is attractive? If he was an 18 year old high school student, there may be some grumbling but no one would really give it much though after that. She's clearly a predator that has no qualms about ensnaring young men to get what she wants and whatever that is, who knows.

Surely if a 16 year old girl is mature enough to make a decision to purchase an abortion pill from an adult pharmacist and drug salesman, this 17 year old boy is old enough to decide whether to engage in sex with an adult woman.

and if 16, then why not 15.

And if 15, then why not 14?

Consider that these women, or the state acting on behalf of the child, then collects child support from the boy (or his parents -- they're not picky). Then think about "age of consent" in these terms -- at what are are you old enough to "consent" to paying 18 years of child support?

(Here in Illinois, we've decided that 17 year olds are mature enough to vote -- but only if their 18th birthday precedes the next general election. If you're 17 at the time of the general election, but your birthday is the next day, then, by the way the calendar falls, you're not old enough to make a reasoned decision.)

Jane the Actuary said...

Hey, if a man statutorily-rapes a teenage girl and he ends up with custody (a stretch because women generally "own" their children, but let's suppose she has addiction issues), can she be forced to pay child support?

Call me sexist, but I would personally have a much bigger problem with a male teacher having sex with my 17 year old daughter than a female teacher having sex with my 17 year old son.

A prerequisite for liberty is individuals capable of self-moderating, responsible behavior. This is, among other reasons, why we distinguish between children and adults. Often with arbitrary criteria and insufficient wisdom.

Clearly, you're just publicly admitting to a belief that is, judging from a comparison of jail sentences handed out to male & female offenders, very common.

Would you mind explaining your reasoning so that we can discuss it in the calm & rational manner that is our SOP here chez Althouse?

Sadly, in today's world, it is entirely possible to become an adult without having been given a moral compass.

Morality requires making judgements and judgements are mean.

In California they hit a 15-year-old rape victim for 18 years of child support.

His rapist was 34.

"Our point of view is that the newborn is the victim in these matters," said Carol Ann White, a lawyer who heads the attorney general's child-support-enforcement unit.

Hey, look, the government discovered a baby!

"No matter what the circumstances of their conception, babies deserve to have two parents.

Our baby-killing feminist overlords are looking out for the baby! That's rich.

Hey, why don't we force the rape victims to marry their rapists? That way the baby will have two parents.

Oh, wait, you just want money. Never mind then.

Can feminism be any more corrupt? You kill any babies you don't want. And then when you want money you sue the boys that you raped, while talking about your baby love.

Unbelievable.

Gahrie said...

From St. Croix's link:

Until 1994, the state's statutory-rape law didn't even apply to boys; only adults who had sex with young girls could be prosecuted.

Kind of says it all, doesn't it?

What I never get in these cases-- What on earth is the attraction of a 17 year old boy? Heck, even the 17 year old girls think they're too immature and want college guys!

To lust after a 17 year old boy, you'd have to have the maturity of a 13-14 year old girl....

There's nothing to explain. No reasoning went into it whatsoever.

I'm not saying the legal consequences should be any different based on the sexes involved. And we can certainly discuss things here in a calm and rational manner, but if such a thing happened involving my daughter, calm and rational would not be in my vocabulary.

I'm not trying to be unkind here, but I'd be interested to know how often liberal parents have a problem with this situation. Female teacher having sex with their teenaged son (or daughter).

If they did have a problem with it, I'd like to ask them why.

@Deirdre,

Th other day I mentioned that sane women tend to be too trusting of the sanity of their fellow women. That's on display here.

Women "on the prowl" manifest all the fetishistic behavior men "on the prowl" are noted for. This woman had a fantasy involving screwing a 17 year old for some reason (e.g. slim, trim, and someone to initiate into the sexual world).

If you'd like proof of the fetishistic behavior, just go to Craigslist in a metro area and look under Women looking for Men. Big cocks & black men (or a combo of both!) are very popular requests. It's not like these chicks are looking for a guy to marry, after all.

I'm just grateful that while growing up no such incident ever happened to me. Men are, through all the stages of their life, fairly obnoxious, but the peak year of obnoxiousness is generally around seventeen.

When my brother was at University of Toronto doing graduate work in the early 80's, his girlfriend admitted to him that she & her girlfriends discussed among themselves that they had the hots for hunky teenage boys.

This was the most demure, scholarly, chick imaginable, too!

In the light of the shifting and politically correct moral standards of modern life, especially in California, and as Quayle points outs, this is just folks doing what comes natural.

From the article: Whitehurst worked Citrus Valley High School during the alleged relationship that resulted in a child.

Hilarious - and very apt - lack of the word 'at'.
I.e., she worked the high school, rather than worked 'at' the high school.

Clyde said...

When I saw the first picture of her without makeup, my first thought was "Hot teacher"? That guy needs an eye exam. In the picture further down, she looked somewhat better. Still, she definitely needs to stick with the makeup.

Joe said...

Wow, Quayle, if we're going to use your moronic reasoning, why not go the other direction? If 16 is too young, why not make the universal age of consent 17, 18? Hell, make it 21.

One way to eliminate this problem is to stop high school at 16 and to stop trying to extend childhood forever.

Blair said...

Age of consent laws are funny things. 17 is perfectly legal in most Western countries.

Personally I think some people (most?) aren't mature enough to have sex until they are well into their twenties. But I do think 17 is plenty old enough to consent to sex. The age should probably be set at 17.
