I have a suggestion to increase Althouse portal usage:

We send Meadehouse the receipt for our purchase and you send us back the Associate amount received. This will equate to a discount for your beloved readers and thus motivate an incredible increases in purchases. To increase sales even more you could send us double the amount you get. It sounds crazy, but you will more than make it up on the increased volume.

I was told this works by a Nobel Prize winning economist.

Meade, I again thank you for the opportunity to post an excerpt from, Taken For Granted, by Leslyn Amthor Spinelli. I encourage all to buy this book written by my wife. She worked very hard on it and folks who have read it, and are not bullshitters, say they really like it. It's set in Madison. Please buy this book through the Althouse portal. It is now available on kindle for only $3.99.

I followed Doug through a labyrinth of cubicles to a sparsely furnished, institutional beige office and took the straight-backed chair he offered. “Who’s dead, and what’s it got to do with Kate Daniels?” I asked.

“I always appreciated your disdain for small talk,” he said with a half-smile. “So I’ll give it to you straight. Your client—or friend or whatever she is to you—is in deep shit.”

“Tell me how deep.”

With nail-bitten fingers, he flipped through the pages of a battered notebook. “At 0130 hours, our officers responded to a 911 at an apartment on Willie Street and found Kate Daniels giving CPR to a non-responsive adult female. The victim’s roommate—who made the call—said she’d just gotten home and had no idea what happened. Said Daniels shook her head when she asked if she’d called for help. The EMTs got there within five minutes and didn’t even bother to transport. Rigor had already begun, so they called in the M.E. to pronounce. We secured the scene and brought in Daniels and the roommate to take their statements.”

I shook my head in disbelief. No way could I envision Kate in this picture.

Tell Leslyn that's wonderful.

I'm constantly impressed by the level of the readership here - so many smart and talented people. It's hard enough just to find one or the other, yet so many here are both, and/or married to someone like that. Just awesome!

bagoh, I will and thanks much. I married up, that's for sure.

Not my genre, but Mom just got one gifted to her for her new Kindle. She loves that stuff.

bagoh, You're a good son. There's drugs involved so I hope mom isn't offended.

She's cool. Raising four kids broke her in plenty on the subject.

In fact, I hear bag's mom was the one who got all four of the bagoh children started on their candy cigarette habits. She can't really be blamed. Back in the 50's all the en vogue childrearing books recommended wax lips and nickle nips for calming colicy infants. Who could have known they were gateways to the harder stuff?

Offended? Bags' mom self-published The Book on raising child junkies.

That's funny because I just ordered more candy cigarettes about an hour ago. Talk of Mom triggered the darkness, and in a few days (Prime shipping) I will carry that monkey again for a day.

She made my brother eat a pack of real cigarettes, so I guess I got off easy, except for the Friday night enemas.

I was camping last weekend in SW Minnesota. I went into a convenience store, because I needed a fishing license. The place sold candy cigarettes! Such dangerous substances are prohibited in my city. I bought a pack for my 3 sons, in what I considered an act of rebellion.

I asked them: "Do I need to tell you that smoking real cigarettes is a bad idea?"

"No, Dad. We know. Now gimme the lighter and fetch me a beer."
