"Cheerios had to disable comments on YouTube – I’m not going to repeat them but you can imagine the general witless racism..."

"... with stereotypes about minorities and warnings of race-mixing as the end of civilization. Late Friday night, after a day of widespread news coverage, the ad had more than 8,400 thumbs-up votes on YouTube, versus about 900 thumbs-down."

So we don't know who put up the comments and we don't have to suffer through reading them, whatever they were, but we're all watching the ad with the adorable little girl who conveys the message that Cheerios fend off heart attacks and loving females therefore feed their men Cheerios.

Viral ad campaign works swimmingly well.

Racism is bad. Well-known opinion, shared by everyone you know, is stated with indignant new fervor that seems justified by whatever that thing was that no one saw, and what slips in so easily is a genuinely questionable opinion: that eating packaged, processed grain food is good for your health.

Also, kids: In real life, pouring food on your dad when he's sleeping on the sofa is not a good way to cause him to wake up thinking I love you.

ADDED: This is a good time to look back on this great old George Bush viral video: "you're working hard to put food on your family.

Leftism works in part by balkanizing populations into victim groups. The unintended consequence is that intolerance between groups increases.

Progressives have set the stage for increasing racism and ethnic enmity. I expect more and more of this to come, like Drudge pointing out the attacks on gays in NYC.

As for Cheerios, just another ad showing men too dumb to take care of themselves. Yeah, yeah, Dad told her it was good for your heart, but he's too stupid to eat it himself, or daughter wouldn't have poured it all over him.

Race is so much more than skin color. Two things are staggering: the amount of scientific evidence that racial differences are profound and inextinguishable; the willful blindness to the evidence on the part of the bien pensants.

Buddwing - Here is a very important lesson for you. If you think carefully about this, it will probably be the best thing you learn all day. There is a interesting fact about people. It is fair to talk about groups of people and group tendencies. Groups have norms. But just because a person is a member of a group, does not mean that the next individual of that group will behave according to the group norms.

This completely explains the observation of my father. Blacks, on average test about a standard deviation lower than whites in measures of I.Q. But, pay attention, the average doesn't dictate where an individual within that group may fall! How cool! Blacks can be less intelligent on average than whites, but the single most intelligent person my father met can be black! It is difficult to get ahold of this, but if you work, it will come to you.

Anecdotally - most of the people I've heard promoting this panacea are whites who are not, as a matter of fact, taking their own advice about mixing it up when it comes to marriage and reproduction. On the other hand, I've run into a number of people in mixed marriages who are very comfortably "race realist". At any rate, the "there's no such thing as race" or "it's only about skin color" thing seems to be a faith-based belief mostly restricted to whites.

You stop worrying about disparate impact everywhere, and instead teach everyone to play (but first know) the hand they were dealt, the best it can be played. And you help them to do so, without wish-casting.

MisterBuddwing: And treating people in terms of groups will help to achieve that?

If vast amounts of social policy are based on "treating people in terms of groups", then, yeah, you have to address the fact that vast amounts of social policy are based on "treating people in terms of groups", if you want to get rid of those policies. Prattling about how you, personally, judge individuals as individuals (like everybody else here doesn't?) is an evasion.

"Disparate impact" (and other gnostic concepts like "institutional racism" and "white privilege") are based on the belief that there are no aggregate group differences in traits like IQ, and therefore that any group outcomes not proportional to that group's representation in the population must be the result of some extraneous factor that can, of course, be fixed by pouring resources into social engineering and more and more bureaucrats.

But since you're dead-set against treating people in terms of groups, we can take it that you are willing to tolerate "unequal outcomes" in profession, income, etc. by racial group? Because noticing that in the first place requires "treating people in terms of groups". As would any honest attempt to understand why those unequal outcomes exist. (And by "honest" I don't mean "ignore any facts that don't involve blaming whitey".)

The Communists were comin' around
They was in the air, they were on the ground
They were all over

So I ran down most hurriedly
And joined the John Birch Society
I got me a secret membership card
Went back to my backyard
And started looking on the sidewalk
'Neath the rose bush

Well, I was lookin' everywhere for them gold darned Reds
I got up in the mornin' and looked under my bed
Looked behind the kitchen, behind the door
Even tore loose the kitchen floor, couldn't find any

I looked beneath the sofa, beneath the chair
Looking for them Reds everywhere
I looked way up my chimney hole
Even looked deep inside my toilet bowl
They got away

[ From: http://www.metrolyrics.com/talkin-john-birch-paranoid-blues-lyrics-bob-dylan.html ]
I heard some footsteps by the front porch door
So I grabbed my shotgun from the floor
I snuck around the house with a huff and hiss and
"Hands up, you Communist" it was a mail man
He punched me out

Well, I quit my job so I could work alone
I got a magnifying glass like Sherlock Holmes
Followed some clues from my detective bag
And discovered they was red stripes on the American flag
Did you know about Betsy Ross

Well, I was sittin' home alone and I started to sweat
I figured they was in my television set
I peeked behind the picture frame
And got a shock from my feet that hit my brain
Them Reds did it, no one's on the hootin' nanny

Well, I finally started thinkin' straight
When I run outta things to investigate
I couldn't imagine doin' anything else
So now I'm at home investigatin' myself
Hope, I don't find out too much, good God
