"Obama needs to stop lecturing predominantly black audiences, some supporters say."

Writes Vanessa Williams in The Washington Post.
Obama has been making this point — and stirring controversy — since he was a candidate in 2008. Jesse Jackson Sr. was incensed by what he saw as Obama’s “talking down to black people,” yet it was Jackson who was criticized. Many in the black community believed that Obama’s chastisements were necessary to make himself politically palatable to white voters.

The president’s most recent such remarks — there were only a few Sunday, but they were widely reported — triggered a debate on blogs and social media that, in part, asked why Obama continued his lecturing.
To be fair, Jackson was criticized because he added — with a brusque cutting gesture — "I want to cut his nuts out." The metaphor of brutal violence made it easy to discount Jackson's message at the time.

But typical graduation speeches are always filled with boring lecturey admonitions to grads. Some people need to realize that maybe it's not the color of their skin but its super-fine thinness.

I criticized Obama on this speech because it seemed to me like he was telling the grads to lay off the excuses and whining and help HIM (while still holding tight to grievances). Typical self-centered Obama.

What is it with blacks? Why do they feel this need to have a Congressional Black Caucus? Why this need for community organizers, or for "black spokesmen"? There is a black racism that will never go away.

Let's assume for the moment that a black has to work twice as hard and success is derived from that extra labor. Chances are he will not be a democrat. Further chances are, is that he will be labeled a sell-out and an uncle tom and face the derision of that community and a president that they yearn for success through their fruits of extra labor and upon that achievement are vilified for it. Blacks are on the wrong side. They know it, but their grafted servitude, aka neo-democrat voting bloc slavery doesn't permit them to buck the system without paying a massive toll.

Black already believe that there is a congressional white caucus. Hence why they needed one of their own. The irony is astounding.

I think Obama is a jackass and piss-poor president, but I do agree with him on this. I don't think he's talking down when he admonishes them about their out-of-wedlock single mother problems, crime problems, education problems, and high unemployment. If you don't think those are big problems in the black community, then you must be anti-science. The stats are all there, and if you don't believe them, go visit some black neighborhoods in urban areas.

I'm glad he's talking like this. Bill Cosby got pilloried by blacks for saying the same things.

Now, do I think that Obama really believes what he's saying? The same guy who went to the Church of God Damn AmeriKKKa? Hmmm.....

The most interesting bit of the linked article:

Leola Johnson, an associate professor and chair of the Media and Cultural Studies Department at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., said the Obamas’ speeches “are actually not aimed at black people.”

“They’re actually for white people, liberals especially,” she said. Liberal bloggers were brimming with praise for Obama after the Morehouse speech. “It’s the legacy of Daniel Patrick Moynihan and that whole group of white liberals who want to say it’s not just about structural problems that black people aren’t doing well, it’s about their own values.”

Saint Croix said...

I think the most unfortunate fact of the Civil Rights movement may have been that so many of it's leaders were clergy.

What?!? Now that's an insane thing to say. Have you never heard any of Martin Luther King's speeches? It was entirely a spiritual appeal, rooted in Christianity. That's what made it so powerful.

"We shall match your capacity to inflict suffering by our capacity to endure suffering. We will meet your physical force with soul force. Do to us what you will and we will still love you.... But be assured that we'll wear you down by our capacity to suffer, and one day we will win our freedom. We will not only win freedom for ourselves; we will appeal to your heart and conscience that we will win you in the process, and our victory will be a double victory."

It's mind-boggling to try to wish King into some sort of secular humanist. As if that would be an improvement!

What examples can an ardent, "let's harness government to fix it" anti-racism advocate point to as successful government policies that could not be explained equally as well, if not better, by the simple passage of time?

And, by "fix it," I mean that which lies in peoples' hearts and minds.

Yes, that's exactly right. And they're not just permanently aggrieved; they are professionally aggrieved. It's their job to be upset about race and to upset people about race. It's how they make their money.

I remember when Obama was elected, there were all these people who saw it as their job to assure us that racism was alive and well. America is still racist! Just because you elected a black President, doesn't mean that racism has gone away.

As if you were sitting by the pool waiting for some lackey to bring it to you once you snapped your fingers.

And each time it sounded lamer and lamer, so I don't blame you for trying to deny it.

But then, once we call you on your nonsensical pontifications, you always have to try to change the subject.

And I must say, it's interesting to see you claim that Obama's life story makes him a white guy.

What was his mother, an Arab?

Of course, he's white. And that's the way he was raised and that's the way he lives.

Apparently, minorities can't be upper middle class.

You said that, not me. All I've said is that your pathetic attempts to portray your Messiah as some downtrodden black man fighting for the rights of his people are absolute nonsense.

There are a variety of tribes or ethnicities; but, there is only one human race, where men and women are biologically compatible with each other.

For all the reasons you stated, our integration will continue to be delayed. Exploitation of real and manufactured differentials and gradients sponsors corruption. It is fundamentally corrupt to denigrate individual dignity and devalue human life. This is the source of all evil in the world.

It is, of course, motivated by dreams of material, physical, and ego instant (or immediate) gratification in the general population; and a desire to advance political, economic, and social standing in the so-called "elite" class.

And so the cycles of redistributive and retributive change continue under the selective oversight of individuals and cooperatives with "good intentions," which are often short-term solutions (e.g. treating symptoms) that engender individual, institutional, and cultural corruption, typically through dissociation of risk.

Get back to me when black people stop voting 95+% in a single block, and when they stop ostracizing successful members of their own race for being different (look up Thomas, Clarence).

Then I'll take you a little more seriously.

I agree with your comment as a whole, I just figure if black people are going to act like a group (or a mob, in some cases) then the group should be treated as a group.

That's throwing away your responsibility to act with high standards and blaming it on someone else.

Phx: "That's throwing away your responsibility to act with high standards and blaming it on someone else."

Wherein phx provides the perfect description of the Obama operational model.

It's always easy to discount Jesse Jackson's message, because he's a pathetic race-hustling fool...

Someasshole always comes along and complains of nonspecific raaaacism.

The first thing that should spring to mind when someasshole accuses you of racism is to demand specifics. What was racist? Is talking about black people in a post regarding black pundits' opinions about a black president racist? By that standard, wouldn't anybody making blanket generalizations about blacks be "racist?" Wouldn't Vanessa Williams (the writer) and Barack Obama (the prezzie) also be "racist" then? Can anyone anywhere talk about black people critically in any context, without being racist? If so, what context? This context? If not, why not? Can anyone talk about black people in any context? Without being accused of racism, that is? Define racism. Define racist. Is Obama racist, by your definition? If not, why not? Do black people make you nervous? Anxious? Do you start to sweat just thinking about the topic? Like you might be thinking "bad thoughts?" Yannow, like, totally inadvertently of course? So better to shut down the topic immediately? And what to do if a black person looks at you? Like, when you're walking down the street? Panic! What's the protocol? Does one avert one's eyes, even if it's not Beyoncé? If you mention Obama, is it correct to merely bow or genuflect in the direction of Washington DC or must one go full bottoms-up Muslim? Too obvious? Should you charge black people rent if they are living in your brain and controlling your thoughts? What if there's rent control? Is it fair to ask for a little compensation for always yelling about racism even though you're white and only bring it up in order to shut down ideological opponents and other white people who seem like they might be trouble? What if you're half-white? If you're half white can you still "lecture" blacks at a graduation ceremony? What if you're just pointing out the obvious, stuff everyone already knows? Isn't that a little, um, self-serving? You're not really "lecturing" blacks in that case, then, are you? You're lecturing everyone else. Duh. What if you're too dumb to figure that one out on your own? What if you rely on Vanessa Williams and Ta-Nehesi Whatever the fuck in order to interpret world events and how to think? ARe you doomed? Is it racist to point that out?

ETC.
