"I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport."

"But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation."

Jason Collins has strong political connections. Bill Clinton said: “I have known Jason Collins since he was Chelsea’s classmate and friend at Stanford."

And Rep. Joe Kennedy (D-Massachusetts) was Collins's roommate at Stanford: "For as long as I’ve known Jason Collins he has been defined by three things: his passion for the sport he loves, his unwavering integrity, and the biggest heart you will ever find. Without question or hesitation, he gives everything he’s got to those of us lucky enough to be in his life. I’m proud to stand with him today and proud to call him a friend."

Collins has been in the NBA for 12 years and will be a free agent at the end of the season. Does he face abuse within sports? He says he's led a "double life has kept me from getting close to any of my teammates." There's always politics. The man has some powerful friends there.

Making people think about anything in a new light is always the wrong approach. It's the complete wrong verb because it connotes coercion. That's exactly what your opponents are fighting here.

I mean, causing people to think differently is a complete different ball of wax than making people think something. In any case it's easier to make people do things than think things.

But try do it when what you're offering demands reason, accountability, and principles.

Flighty fantasy-filled solipsism like that doesn't like hard and cold reality.

But hard and cold reality likes them.

phx,

I am always identified by others as conservative and/or Republican. Ten years ago, I volunteered my time and resources to produce, direct and edit a no budget comedy program written by a gay writer/actor. This involved donating usage of my cameras, lighting and sound gear as well as the hundreds of hours of shooting and editing.

The show starred an openly gay character and his straight female friend. One of the supporting actors was a gay man whose career is performing in drag.

One of the scenes involved the gay star kissing another man (who happened to be straight). The star had a crush on this man and was nervous about the scene. Thus, I had a three person meeting wherein I informed that I had to be convinced that this kiss was real or we would keep doing it. (The star liked that!)

I am libertarian/conservative. One of the actors on the show even labelled me a Republican. (I'm not.) At the release party for the show, I was sitting at a table with a friend of the show's creator who I had not met previously. He started gratuitous Bush-bashing to which I interrupted and said, "Just so you know, I voted for Bush."

He looked me dead in the eye and said, "If it were up to me, you would not be sitting at this table."

Phx, you, in this thread, are participating in the exact same kind of bigotry that man did.

Don't be a bigot.

Matt I have said on this web site at least twenty times, I'm SORRY for the Republican moderates. The Republican rank and file is chock full of extremists and people who scare the hell out of the bulk of undecided and moderate voters.

If you have a problem with my characterization of the right, I suggest you reread the comments in this very thread.

That said, I agree you have a point not all conservatives, righties, or Repubs are in the least homophobic. And there are homophobes in Democratic party as well.

But your side has the image problem, and if you are wondering why, reread the thread.

OK. So what's the hard part? What was it about Romney that was so bad to the reason and accountability of the 18-30 year old women?

I don't think it was Romney that was SO bad. It was the baggage that went with him. The Republican rank and file, tuned into Rush Limbaugh.

First openly gay athlete in a major American team sport.

There are quite a few qualifiers in that statement, but one that's missing is "male". Because I'm pretty sure that there are openly lesbian and bisexual female athletes in major American team sports. I'm also pretty sure that no one is hearing their names on the news, because no one particularly cares.

Matt said...

phx,

Thanks for the clarification. As it is, it is comments like yours earlier in the thread (as well as numerous other things outside of the blogosphere) that led to me, years ago, to vow to never vote for a Democrat again. Your "side" has image problems too.

I happen to agree with a number of the comments made by "my side" in this thread. Most notably, Jason Collins' coming out was not courageous. Hell, my outing my self as not liberal at the release party was more brave. (And it wasn't even that.)

Had it been the very beginning of his professional career... that would have been brave. As it is, there is a good chance that he would not have had a job next year had he been straight, gay or purple.

Now, the NBA, to NOT look homophobic will be sure that someone signs him for at least one more year. In fact, if I were a betting man, I would bet he plays exactly one more season (and probably not even a whole one.)

I am guessing that Cuban signs him to the Mavs for the token season.

The anti-gay insults are really a spirited, well-reasoned and politically astute knee-slapper. Is there no one to whom he won't condescend? I mean, other than the stupid and the prejudiced? Other than those with permanently made-up minds?

The idea that there is anything upon which Pogo hasn't already made up his mind is about as sensible as entertaining the existence of the Loch Ness Monster, The Abominable Snowman or Bigfoot.

Hence, reason is expendable.

Republican candidates often lose me, but Democrats almost never gain me.

This is the thing I hate about Democrats, the assumption that by throwing gay people a crust or two, I'll be so grateful that I'll vote for them automatically, despite the fact that their other ruinous, Statist, anti-liberty policies handily cancel out any small "gay rights" gains that they advocate (and only advocate when it appears absolutely safe for them to do so).

No one cares about you and your self-hating, glib vote. Most gays are more socially astute than you.

Sorry. I'm just pointing out a political reality. Much as you like to think that being "nice" means lying to you, it's a dis-service. The Democrat party can go fuck itself. I've been around long enough to remember many instances of that party telling gay people the same thing. The only reason that the Democrats have decided to embrace the gay issue is because it's safe for them to do it. If it becomes unsafe again, they'll throw us queers to the lions, once again.

Any freedoms that gay people have re-captured were hard-won by gay people, not as the gift of a bunch of politicians.

Don't look to the government to "grant" you rights.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

I remember one time offering to buy one of Palladian's midlevel talent pieces of art - almost as much out of pity for his economic situation as due to some tiny lingering bit of actual interest or appreciation, and he told me how honored he'd be to engage in this bit of economic exchange. He was really excited about it.

I often prefer transactions with small business owners that I know. Who work in my neighborhood or nearby. Who care about our community and actively seek to contribute to its economic betterment.

And then I thought, Palladian believes that the only compassion due anyone is that which should NEVER be compelled.

So I decided to wait. I figured, if he ever achieves that step in becoming fully human, where he realizes that our obligations to one another are necessary and only a choice if one prefers to promote an immoral society where nothing - not even any right - is due anyone else, then I might indulge him.

Suffice it to say, he never achieved that last step. And I watch as he falls on his sword over it as we speak.

Good luck, Palladian. To each his own (fate).

I love watching people crowing about supporting a President who was re-elected with fewer votes than the 1st time around (a first in modern history) say the Republicans - who fully control 26 state legislatures, the US house, and 30 governorships - are super-duper unpopular.

Of course by pretending the only thing that matters is the Presidency, they comfort themselves in that warm little cocoon.

Exactly right. The part that scares me is when politicians get so complacent that they think that the equation works the other way around, that the public moves when the politician forces them to.

And you're backing up my earlier point, that any gains that gay people have made in re-capturing our rights have been made by activists, artists, writers, and individuals. (Most) politicians just step in at the end and steal the applause.

BTW, I say "re-capturing our rights" because I believe that human rights are innate and endowed by our Creator, not granted by government. Government can only either protect those rights or take them away, not "grant" them. That's one of my fundamental problems with the gay marriage spectacle; it's conceding too much power to the State.

Drago said...

Hence, non-stop steering of the conversation to the war on women (someone alert the Kennedy's!), right-wing white Christian militia's, gay marriage, etc.

"That's one of my fundamental problems with the gay marriage spectacle; it's conceding too much power to the State."

And I also feel the same way when I hear religious people and social conservatives decrying the inclusion of same-sex couples in secular marriage; it's as if they're conceding that marriage is solely defined by the State, and that any change in the State's definition of or requirements for marriage will destroy an institution that, in their view, is ordained and defined by God and their churches. Don't give the secular government so much credit!

I do think that it's legitimate for religious organizations to worry that the State will eventually impose their secular definition on the various religious definitions. That's why I advocate the complete removal of government from the marriage business. Everyone's problems solved, everyone's rights intact.

If Palladian has the condition he says he's been told he has (and I'm done addressing His Highness directly), then that would explain why he doesn't get this. Politics involve/requires making coalitions. Democrats didn't have the votes for gay rights all along, it took time to build the coalition and lobbying support to get there. Same on civil rights. The progress was slow and steady, but in the right direction (unlike the way the Republicans reversed themselves on it by 1970).

These are social realities that anyone with the basic capacity for it can understand. Maybe your explanation might make sense to him, but based on the immaturity he's showing, I doubt it.
