Boxing to blame for Boston bombing?

The battered brain of Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

I mean, how often do we here stories of ex-NFL guys blowing up children with bombs? It seems like it happens five six times every day, right? And don't get me started on boxers ... they just walk around chewing peoples ears off as though they were candy.

Tibore said...

I was about to object that the article headline seemed to exaggerate things... but oddly enough, it turns out to make reasonable statements. The researches quoted came out and said they doubt that CTE is the cause, yet they're also saying it's a good idea to look anyway, just for medical science's sake.

"“Am I suggesting it because I think he has the disease? No,’’ Stern said. “But would it lead to a complete picture [of his brain]? Yes.’’

Cantu said, “If they don’t do it, something could be missed.’’"

I can get on board with that. It's an evenhanded suggestion in the end.

Ignorance is Bliss said...

Should be easy enough to test this hypothesis. Just check for the level of correlation between boxing and terrorist acts. Then compare that to the correlation between his other interests and terrorist acts.

I'm sure they will be happy to follow the science wherever it leads.

To his credit, it's pretty obvious that the guy who wrote that thinks it's all a bunch of horseshit.

But the reasoning behind mass killings like the Marathon bombing, are complex and often hard to understand

Eyes tightly shut.

chickelit said...

CTE was an immediate consideration in recent tragic deaths like the murder-suicide committed by Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher and the suicide of Hall of Fame linebacker Junior Seau.

Go ahead, do the scans. I doubt they'll be conclusive though. Longshot, really.

Gambling and generally impulsive behaviour has been linked to frequent head trauma.

If we're going to start worrying about muslims who boxed and have CTE, we'd better put Muhammed Ali under 24/7 security surveillance.

Bruce Hayden said...

Yeh - let's blame anything but the obvious - Islamic Jihad. Sure there are extenuating circumstances why so many adherents of the Religion of Peace are involved on so much terrorism and violence. A religion that historically grew through violent conquest.

Bill, Republic of Texas said...

How about the reverse. He was an angry and violent man who was drawn to boxing?

Tibore said...

Folks, the question being studied is not as the professor put it i.e. "Boxing to blame for Boston bombing?". It's whether chronic traumatic encephalopathy had any role in the rapid change of Tsarnaev's behavior. That's a lot broader of a question than specifically tying in CTE and the marathon bombing.

As one of the researchers said:

"“Is it possible that some changes might have gone on in his overall functioning due to his boxing and potentially related brain disease? Yes,’’ said Stern, a BU professor of neurology and neurosurgery. “Anything is possible. But to then jump to the disease leading to well-planned behavior like this, I couldn’t go there.’’ [...]

...But there are too many people who do such bizarre and terrible acts that it’s unlikely it’s all due to one terrorist gene or disease."

None of the researchers is saying that CTE is the actual cause of the bombing suspect's choice of actions. They're making a far more reasonable statement: Let's study his brain and see what it tells us about this individual. That's what the researchers are getting at.

From the Lowell Sun 2012

"In the West End Gym program, a partnership between the Lowell Police Department and Ramalho, youth are taken off the streets and into Ramalho's gym to learn how to train like a champion boxer.

Ramalho, a longtime Lowell trainer, has turned out Golden Gloves champion boxers.

From 2:30-4 p.m. throughout the year, more than a dozen youth descend upon the gym in an old South Lowell warehouse. They work with each other and about four volunteer trainers, who also have come from the streets and trained under Ramalho as boxers.

The young men and women, ranging in ethnic background and age, learn how to shadow-box, hit the heavy and speed bags, jog, do jumping jacks and strengthen their body. Some get to spar if they want.

School resource officers, Probation Department officers, and other partners like the Lowell Middlesex Academy Charter School, recommend potential candidates to Mercado and he meets with them and their parents.

They have to write a paragraph on why they think the program will benefit them, Mercado said.

And they have to commit."

Personality changes due to brain injury from impact, drug use, or disease are not uncommon, and Tamerlan appears to have been a fairly normal young man who somehow turned dark. It could be interesting to see if there are any signs of such abnormalities in his brain, and they no doubt are doing a thorough autopsy anyway.

More from the link:
Media accounts have chronicled rapid behavioral changes Tsarnaev experienced in his early 20s, and most have attributed those changes to his renewed commitment to Islam. Finding religion led Tsarnaev to give up boxing, alcohol, and smoking, according to the accounts, and he also took a six-month trip to his native Russia, posted radical videos posted on YouTube, and lost the man who was reportedly his best friend in a grisly triple murder in 2011. These are all plausible factors that might help explain his motives, and they’re all worthy of investigation.

Finding CTE in an individual who has committed a violent act hardly proves correlation.
Wouldn't you first have to prove that extreme violence is more likely in people with CTE.
Have srudies shown that?

Icepick said...

Or how about this for a medical line of investigation: Chechens are known for their gangsterism and terrorism. There's only about 2 million of them (IIRC), and yet they've been responsible for an inordinate amount the crime and terrorism in the former Soviet Union, including two of the more spectacular terror attacks ever. (Obviously not on par with what happened on 9/11/2001, but the Beslan attack and the attack on the movie theatre in Moscow were pretty spectacular.) Not only that, but Chechens apparently have some ... INTERESTING ... cultural practices, and were insane enough to take on both Stalin and Stalin's heirs.

Which is to say, they've got more than their fair share of homicidal tendencies.

Some ethnic groups are known to have higher levels of testosterone than others. Higher levels of T are associated with risky, impulsive decision making, as well as an increased propensity for violence. Has anyone done a study of Chechens to determine exactly how high their T levels are compared to other ethnic groups? Has anyone thought to check the T levels in either Tamerlan or Joker to figure out if they're higher than what would be expected for men of their age?

This has the added benefit of explaining how it would affect both men, whereas it is pretty much impossible to explain how Tamerlan's brain damage has affected the behavior of his younger brother.

(I'll note that Joker's comments that his brother did all the planning and such is really damned CONVENIENT, and has all the moral weight of "We were just following orders.")

Icepick said...

I'll also note that the worst cases of violence I've heard associated with CTE were all spontaneous in nature and were frequently fueled by drugs or alcohol. I'd be happy to hear of cases that run counter to what I just wrote.

Given the cases I do know about (and suspicions about the Chris Benoit case from a few years back) Tamerlan giving up on drugs and alcohol and planning a bombing spree do NOT sound like hallmarks of CTE. I have and I've had lengthy conversation about it as well. It's in the commandments, however, no one I know would outwardly discuss it. After thousands of years, it is accepted that the Christian god is the only God. He clearly got his wish.

However, if you read it in Deuteronomy 5:7 you can see that God is setting it up the Israelites that he should be the only god for them and they clearly accepted it. Considering the Paganism of that time, not to mention the distinctions between the Egyptian and Greek pantheons, it would be in his best interests to have it that way.

Anonymous said...

Another thing to note is that as an amateur boxer Tamerlan would have worn headgear for all his fights. Headgear is not foolproof but does provide some measure of protection against brain injury. Amateur fights also are only three rounds in length, which is a round shorter than the shortest professional fights. Finally, because scoring in amateur boxing is based largely on a simple count of punches landed, without much regard to how hard the punches may be, amateur boxers don't throw hard knockout punches anywhere near as often as the pros.

Well, if you look at pressure cookers, what is a pressure cooker? but an artifact of a bygone era when the men ruled the world and women were slaves...

One day, the rice was burned, again, so a man named Saron Ricin went and invented a pressure cooker and the cooker saved the women some time. Time was a luxury at enslavement camp, the so called kitchen, where they were kept barefoot and pregnant... and now they had some time to watch a soap opera or two.

But you see, the pressure cooker was a trick. For now it only meant that the women would have less of an excuse not to perform their wifely duties... and the cooking continued, relentless, while the women were dying inside.

And so it was, that, at the Boston Marathon, on this past April 15th, that the crock pot and the pressure cooker were exposed for the fraud that they have represented... A tool for the enslavement of women.

You see, when the brave bombers blew up those crock pots, they were sending a message of liberation to hundreds... thousands... millions of women all around the world.

These Boston crock pot bombers were a gift to women.

I'm sure Freeman Cunt will be in here shortly to tell us all how their murdering of a woman was FAR WORSE than their murdering of an 8-year-old boy.

Sisterhood before all, bitches!

Enjoy the decline, feminazis!

So why did they become radicalized? because they were against the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Again, they hate us for our policies. Standard lefty boilerplate arguments.
Now suppose they were going to pretty much any college in this country and surrounding themselves with the bush lied people died, 9/11 was an inside job, there is no terrorist threat, Bush is the real terrorist crowd.

Oh, wait. They did attend college and most likely were exposed to that rhetoric.

If Tamerlane is becoming more radical in his Islamist, he certainly was given an awful lot of ammunition from the left that would enforce his view that America was the Great Satan. Because that's how the left has viewed Amerikka since the 60's. and certainly during Bush's term. And certainly during the War on terror.

With friends like this, who needs enemies?

There's video all over the place.

Jones is a disturbing freak someone should punch when his acting out becomes threatening in the name of anticipatory retaliation and personal security.

If boxing caused tamerlan to become radical, what caused his younger brother to become radical in the same way? Did he have a boxing career I wasn't aware of? Did tamerlan go home and use his face like a punching bag to train, so his brain was damaged the same way?

Maybe this CTE stuff is contagious. I mean if you look at it, nearly everyone who gets it has been in close physical contact with someone else that has it. Then again, it's the same with Islamic Crazy Ass Murdering Nutjobism (ICAMN).

Tough call.

The left has become a sad parody of itself. The American people are rejecting leftism.

Boxing to blame? How about welfare?

[Mass.] State officials confirmed last night that Tsarnaev, slain in a raging gun battle with police last Friday, was receiving benefits along with his wife, Katherine Russell Tsarnaev, and their 3-year-old daughter. The state’s Executive Office of Health and Human Services said those benefits ended in 2012 when the couple stopped meeting income eligibility limits.

Didn't know about that incident... just saw the video and I found Jones behavior as that of an intolerant bully.

Makes me want to say I'm sorry I've ever paid any attention to him... not because I'm not interested in dissent... Dissent is the check on the path towards the better direction... when there is no dissent, that's not good, and there is a good chance that something might be very wrong.

But there also civility, in the other hand, of the hand in hand with the message... And if you cant be civil, it could be because your message is so full of holes that you have no respect for it.

Its just puffery showmanship assbaggery.

Alex Jones is a troofer and conspiracy theorist of the 1st order - all things which play very well into the particular pathologies of the islamic mind. And btw, trooferism has been, by in large, a liberal sickness (at least during the Bush admin.).

"Did anyone care about McVeigh's family life or sports? Anyone care about why handsome Ted Bundy murdered? Try to explain and defend him?"

In fact, the FBI studies the personal histories and psychological profiles of all manner of violent criminals, in an effort to understand them and to discern, to the degree possible, if there are are any common or identifiable triggering factors behind their behaviors. You can bet Bundy's life and childhood has been closely studied, both before and after his execution.

Such endeavors are not made in defense of the respective offenders, but simply to understand them, the better to understand all those like them who will be committing offenses in the future. If we can understand them we have a better chance of apprehending them.

It's very primitive thinking to assume the effort to understand behavior is an effort to justify or defend that behavior.

Prof. Althouse, I’d like to to discuss Rand Paul's comments on domestic use of drones. I know this isn't the correct topic for this post, but I hope you comment on it. I'm afraid that a clear strategy the left (and some of the right) will use to destroy Paul is because many of his positions are nuanced. We saw this with his comments Civil Rights Act’s effect on private enterprise and again we see it here with his comments on drones. The logical fallacy of, "if you're not for this, you're for that," will be used continually against him. Some of his dad’s nuttier supports don’t help this. Further, he doesn't have a lot of other politicians that will defend him or help clarify his points. So hopefully we can discuss it. Thanks!

An acquaintance said he had heard Tamerlane go on anti American/911 rants on more then one occasion. When asked why he didn't turn him in he said it's because of all the anti Muslim sentiment. Plus, it was Cambridge, many people talk that way, Christian and Muslim so it wasn't all that unusual.

What does "anti-American/911 rants" mean? What was the substance of his rants? Did he express a desire to inflict violence? Did he merely criticize the government for its policies and behavior, abroad or domestically? Did he express overt support for the violent actions and goals of Islamic terrorists?

Many here criticize the American government--often vehemently, and from opposing political perspectives. Should criticism of America's government or behavior--absent any expressed wish or intent to cause harm--be considered suspicious such that it should it be reported to the authorities?

Was a Bill Ayres all that different than your average 60's radical? Other than that he took his action further?
But if you asked WHY he bombed the various govt buildings he'd tell you a view of America that most 60's radicals shared.
So too with the Left now. Tamerlan was a Muslim fundamentalist, but he was also steeped in anti American leftism I'm sure. He too thought bush was the REAL terrorist. He too thought fire doesn't melt steel just like Rosie O'Donnell. Thy might disagree with the solution (namely socialism versus Islamism) but they were both in agreement with the target of their Anger.
America. Racist America. Decadent America, imperialist America. America as the source of evil in the world.
Certainly not America the exceptional.

I see it as sort of a pre-existing state in the progression of a disease. Many expressing rabid anti-Americanism thoughts are able to hold it in check. Others snap. Are you that willfully obtuse, Robert Cook?

exactly! Bolded part. Only it's leaving out the leftist secularists who most assuredly talked that way. Again, the lefts views aren't all that different from Tamerlans when it comes to Amerikkka.

Your insult doesn't answer the question. What was the nature of Tamerlane's anti-American rants? More to the point: Does any criticism of America warrant suspicion? Must we all now fear that any opinions we express that are not wholeheartedly in agreement with the American orthodoxy will be reported to the authorities, or that such remarks will bring about an investigation of us?

If we infer from the description of Tamerlane's remarks that they were "like" the criticisms of many others in Cambridge, then we must assume either that everyone in Cambridge is declaring their wish to inflict violence on America (or that they support such efforts), or, more likely, that he echoed the entirely legitimate (non-violence-wishing) criticisms that many Cambridge citizens probably have about the government.

So: does anyone know whether Tamerlane's rants were violent and threatening in nature?

After thousands of years, it is accepted that the Christian god is the only God.

Nah. It's a simple redefinition of terms, in accordance with the Christian mythos: the term “god[s]” becomes “God” the Creator and pervasive “deity-ific” presence in the Universe — while the (formerly known as) gods are not denied per se but rather relegated to being demons in the Xtian system.

Look at Hinduism for analogies. Shiva/Vishnu is the (basically) monotheistic God of the Cosmos (Vishnu's dream is the world we experience) — while the so-called gods of Hinduism are so far down the ladder from that that they might as well be dust by comparison. (See the “Parade of Ants” myth about Indra the king of the “gods” for vivid illustration.)

Accepted by around 1/3 of humanity and rejected by the other 2/3. Although if you acknowledge that Muslims worship the same god as Christians that's more like 50/50.

That's fine. Frankly, muslims are repugnant offal that have little to zero merit in this world or any other. Should they cease to exist tomorrow, the world would cheer and be a better place. They can have their moon god and death cult religion. The other third no one gives two shits about because they still live in an 8th world shit hole with no sign of improvement.

Deuteronomy 5:7

Akin to the pledge of allegiance, really. A statement of where the loyalties of the people should be, not a denial of the existence of alternatives.

I think that's a matter of opinion When you set up, in your own words, and allegiance of this kind and the those that you want it with accept it, then frankly everything else or any other gods become a non-issue. Israelites of that time became monotheistic and considering that God decided he would bet on them to have a larger reach through and then through his Son would see non-jews come to the him of their own free will is saying something of willful exclusivity. Whether other gods exist is irrelevant considering that without worshipers, they evaporate into antiquity and obsolescence. Conversely, Hindu's have what, upwards of 300 million gods or 100 gods. Gods for everything, which in turn makes them useless even if they are some perceived facet of a singular god.

I'd rather take the known. The rest of the unwashed masses can have the crumbs.

Methadras said...

Methadras painted Muslims as ignorant of the ancient origins of their god. I simply pointed out that Christians and Jews are similarly ignorant of the ancient origins of their god.

Compare and contrast the levels of ignorance of muslims vs. christians. Would you prefer living in the US or the ME. You live as in irreligious person an agnostic or even an atheist in this country. You can live as a believer of any kind or a non-believer of any kind in this country. It is Christendom that has paved the way for this. In the ME it is self-evident what would happen.

Multi-culturalism as a functional outgrowth of political correctness from decades of leftist indoctrination and inculcation in our public school system and through the activities of 5th columnist Marxist implants in the halls of government has brought us to this stage. It has been a long and successive campaign to target the US. You are seeing it as it unfolds.
