"Can you imagine Ronald Reagan sitting there and saying ‘Oh, by the way, I can’t do this because of some budget document?’ "

"Or George W. Bush saying, ‘You know, I’m not going to invade Iraq because I can’t get the aircraft carriers I need’ or even Bill Clinton saying, ‘You know, I’m not going to attack Saddam Hussein’s intelligence headquarters,’ as he did when Clinton was president because of some budget document? Under the Constitution, the president is commander-in-chief and employs the force. And so we now have the president going out because of this piece of paper and this agreement, I can’t do what I need to do to protect the country. That’s a kind of madness that I haven’t seen in a long time."

This is the beginning of the Obama story crack-up.

The press will be dragged along kicking & screaming. The squish-lefty press will never go along. But, when an eminence grise like Woodward, "the man who brought down Nixon", starts saying this stuff, it becomes more & more difficult to deny what every plugged-in DC-ite knows: This administration is fuck-wits from top to bottom.

The faked government implosion that the administration will try to pull off because of the sequestration, so it can blame the Repubs will be its undoing.

If you're partial to blogging lawyers -- and who isn't around here! -- I recommend PowerLine blog (http://www.powerlineblog.com/). John Hinderaker has an excellent sequester analogy from yesterday. If a Big Mac Meal Deal is the Federal Budget, the sequester is equal to 2.5 french fries. The amount we're talking about (except for the military) is ridiculously tiny.

Especially because we are talking fake cuts of the distinctly Washingtonian variety, i.e. a reduction in the rate of increase, despite the fact the budget (if it existed) is increasing this year.

If your preference is for visual analogies. Please see Michael Ramirez' excellent sequester "pie" cartoon
(also available at the PowerLine blog). Priceless.

Maybe he thinks we must raise taxes; that's the important thing; that will level the playing field. Putting the Washington Monument and the deer frolicking on the lawn around it at risk could convince the electorate to support raising taxes.

Maybe he wants to destroy the GOP. I find this non-compelling. Does he seek total destruction? Unlikely.

Maybe he wants power, and in his relatively long life he has learned that the best avenues to power involve protest, victim-ideology, and drastic, unyielding blaming.

Bingo. Obama wants power. I assume that that's his goal. He doesn't care much how he gets or wields the power he acquires. He simply wants it.

This relates to your earlier post about the health care lobbyist who worried that sequester wouldn't be catastrophic. All government agencies and departments, including defense, have an incentive to make the cuts as painful as possible. As if there isn't plenty of waste and non-essential defense spending to cut.

What's remarkable is the willingness to play these sorts of games with America's troops deployed overseas.

Garage,

Obama can do layoffs of some of the nearly 1 million Department of Defense civilian workers. Nothing in the law compels the administration to recall carriers (it does prohibit any payroll cuts to service members).

I get it the repubs are bad for not sticking to a budget therefore dems don't even have to pass a budget at all. If your side can't even do the most basic thing required of them under law, don't go grousing about the other sides lack of ability to stick to a budget. You have to submit one before you can gripe about the other sides malfeasance.

And that goes for the sequestration too. Woodward pwned Obama and pointed out that he is lying about the sequestration and demagoging the idea that these cuts are going to force him to recall air craft carriers. But, in fact Obama has been doing this for his entire presidency.
He and the dems, are incapable of actually addressing spending in Washington. It's about this time that the Obamabots start hyperventillating. The more of a nerve that gets pinched the more outraged they become. So you see Ellison hyperventilating on Hannity's show, and you watch Garage Mahal essentially shove his head up his own ass.

Good. Let Obama complain about the auto-spending cuts 50% of which rightly target the military industrial complex even though it needs to be done. I wouldn't talk about self righteous douches if I were you. Obama as part of the deal to get the debt ceiling raised proposed the sequester. Then tried to demagogue republicans and say that it was them that suggested it. Woodward had to come out and say "Sorry, you're lying". And now we are getting the usual pablum from you.
As I mentioned earlier, I thought democrats liked the idea of military cuts. So then why are all the dems going on the news programs and saying this will mean drastic things to the military?
He should own that he suggested this and that he has offered no alternatives to it being passed (other than, we need to raise taxes AGAIN).
Obama got his tax hike not even two months ago. Now it's time for cutting. If he doesn't like the cuts in the sequester THAT HE AND HIS ADMINISTRATION suggested, then pick and choose from the cuts suggested by the repubs.
Or, here's an idea. Why don't the dems offer an alternative of their own for the sequester.

Aren't they required to pass a budget by law?

Here's some douchebaggery on display if you want to talk about douchebaggery:

Let’s set party interests aside, and work to pass a budget that replaces reckless cuts with smart savings and wise investments in our future....” (President Obama, State of the Union Address, February 12, 2013)

Only a few days ago, Obama is calling for passing a budget. Is he not aware that his side hasn't done so for his entire presidency? That he's submitted a late budget four times already, the most of any president?
That he talks about replacing reckless cuts with smart savings but that neither he nor his compadres in the senate have actually offered an alternative to the sequester.
He talks about cuttnig loopholes. That's all well and good to reform the tax code but not to add to spending. Does Obama think cutting loophose amounts to savings? That's revenue increases not savings. Yet more spending.
Your side, Ritmo doesn't care that he is talking out of his ass on this and has been doing so for the entirety of his non existent recovery.

Maybe lefties are growing a bit anxious about the drip-drip-drip of bad PR the Obama team has been getting of late.

Bob Woodward, old and worn as he is, is still one of the guys who broke Watergate and so has credibility among even those not usually willing to question Obama.

The Republican record on balancing budgets and keeping spending under control is indeed worse than mediocre: a C- at best, even on a generous grading scale. Saying that Republicans are not allowed to criticize Obama's record on the same is still stupid.

Look at it this way. If Chris Christie were to call someone (besides himself) fat, we would normally laugh and point and make fun of him as a hypocrite. However, if we're talking about one of those 800-pound guys who hasn't left his bedroom or his bed in years because he's too fat to fit through the door and too heavy to get out of bed, who can't be taken to the hospital for treatment without a crane to move him and a wrecking crew to take the wall off his bedroom, well, even Chris Christie is entitled to call that guy 'fat'.

There's a fundamental difference between just plain 'fat' but still able to function as a normal human being (Christie) and monstrously obese and utterly helpless (the 800-pound man). Of course, the difference in scale between Obama's deficits and Reagan's or Bush's or any other president's is even larger than the 800/350 ratio in my analogy.

Guildofcannonballs said...
