"It kind of made me sad on two accounts. One was that I was very sad that we live in an age..."

"... when someone takes a picture of another person in a vulnerable moment and rather than delete it — and do the decent thing — sells it. And I’m sorry that we live in a culture that commodifies sexuality of unwilling participants, which brings us back to 'Les Mis,' that's what my character is, she is someone who is forced to sell sex to benefit her child because she has nothing and there's no social safety net. Yeah so let’s get back to 'Les Mis.'"

So there we see how smart Anne Hathaway is. (And what a lout Lauer is.)

Yes, very clever. She gets a publicity boomlet for flashing her cootch, then another one for getting the vapours and clutching her pearls when someone noticed.

Also found a way to work leftwing politics into it. Pure genius!

An ACTRESS is complaining about the culture that enables her celebrity, and is a very willing participant in her career, which involves selling her sexiness and acting skills for money.

Like a swimmer complaining about how water is wet.

Only an actress could be so gifted, yet so unaware.

"Who treats Anne Hathaway like that???"

Tut-tut. Methinks Ms. Hathaway takes herself too seriously, as does the person who asked the above question.

Its no different than the 'boxers or briefs' type of wink-wink fluff we are force-fed daily.

If Lauer had asked Drew Barrymore the same thing and it happened to her, I'm betting she would have made light of her mistake and moved on.

YoungHegelian said...

I'm sorry what sort of a moral dipshit reads Les Miserables, where one of the climactic moments of the story is the redemption of Jean Valjean by the Bishop's act of charity with the silverware and comes up with "there was no social safety net"?

No, there wasn't a government safety net, but there sure as hell was a Church-based one. I mean, her character dies under the care of a convent/hospital.

Being liberal is one thing, but being stupid as a box of hammers about the source material of the movie you're in is quite another.

Shawn Levasseur said...

It's been said that the actors in movies work for free, what the really pay them for is to do the publicity for the films.

If that's so, then Anne has earned her pay quite nicely.

Politicians on the Sunday chat shows don't do that good of a job of staying on message.

Thorley Winston said...

It sounds like someone who makes her living because people find her attractive made a wardrobe choice that either revealed more of herself than she intended or was deliberately designed to gain her some notoriety so she could feign outrage at the reaction it predictably garnered. Neither of which is admirable in my book.

Herb said...

why is it called a wardrobe malfunction?
The dress was so form fitting she didnt want to have lines show? or did she really not think wearing a dress that had a slit up the side to her hip without undergarments was the smart thing to do?

Thorley Winston said...

I’m siding with Shouting Thomas and Maguro – it’s a staged publicity event.

Hathaway doesn't see her comeliness as a "sexual commodity?" Then what does she think brings in the millions -- her fab acting chops? Well yes, I'm sure that would be her answer. Commonest thing in the world to simultaneously know but not know what butters your bread.

She made two great points about pop culture gone wild.

An actress not playing a role on stage becomes a real person with real feelings that can be really violated.

First of all, it is funny that we were just talking about this in the "how to generate more traffic" thread.

But second, I say live by the sword die by the sword. She would not have her career if not for her beauty. And she should not be surprised that people want more of her beauty than she initially bargained to give, and will pounce on whatever opportunity she gives them, however unintentional the gift.

Since I've been in the performing biz my entire life, I can tell you that actresses and female musicians share a common characteristic...

They like to be looked at.

They especially like to be looked at in provocative sexual postures. They get a kick out of it. Most of them enjoy exhibitionism.

This is reflected in their sex lives, too.

Hathaway got a hard on out of this. She enjoyed it.

To be hot, but because how often do you get to see Abe vigoda's junk. Famous people will insure their body parts for millions, yet think that somehow the everyday populace won't seek out glimpses of self same body parts if someone gets a shot?
There's also the comparison factor. How do your body parts stack up against the million dollar celebrity's?

The Dark Tight (dress) Rises!

Seems like Anne Hathaway got a little too much in character for Les Miserables; among other things, she dropped about 25 pounds while playing the role of the impoverished Fantine. Apparently, she also felt so impoverished that she couldn't afford underwear underneath her black slit-dress for the premiere of Les Mis. Oops! So the latest incarnation of Catwoman gave us a flash of her kitty while getting out of the car. Meow! Lesson: Never go commando under a dress when there are photographers waiting to snap any wardobe malfunction!

A friend asked if I had the picture and asked me to send it along if I did. I sent a picture of Mr. Bigglesworth, Dr. Evil's hairless cat from the Austin Powers movies.

Victor Hugo lives on.
A giant of his day, his works continue to have a huge global audience. And spawn innumerable plays and movies and other literature directly from, or inspired by, Hugo.

Besides Les Miserables, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, the romantic poetry, and his very intriguing art and paintings that famous artists of the art noveau period credit as a wellspring of their inspirations. A life active in politics. With his works directly inspiring and cited globally for over 100 years as justification for efforts bettering social and workplace conditions.
The work to rennovate the dilapidated Notre Dame Cathederal and feature it as a crown jewel of man's past - traces to reaction following the "Hunchback" that the Cathederal needed private and public funding to bring it back to glory. Thank Victor Hugo with setting that in motion if you have ever been there and marvelled....

Pretty impressive.

Second, going commando promotes good environmental practice: there is no need to use up energy to wash your skivies--you'll save money on detergents, hot water and the whole panoply of energy wasting things that come from washing a daily load of skivies. Third: you will save money by not having to buy skivvies.
Finally, if you are a guy, its easier to scratch your balls is you are commando. I see no downsides to going commando.

Who doesn't support a "safety net"? The issue is that redistributive change is a sponsor of corruption, of providers, beneficiaries, and institutions. It transforms a producer to become the involuntary servant of the consumer.

The goal should be rehabilitation first, and welfare second, for the exceptional cases who are incapable of productive output due to physical and mental impairments.

The goal should be to distribute social responsibility beginning with the family and moving outward. For example, the parents care for their children, then the children care for their parents.

The goal is to promote self-moderation in order to preserve liberty and to mitigate the progress of corruption. To offer rehabilitation when a member of society falters. A safety net is not in and of itself the goal.

The goal should be to develop functional members of society. Not to promote a progressive dysfunction. That is the only way to preserve individual dignity.

That said, what is the purpose of opening Les Miserables on Christmas day?

so long as the three problems of the age—the degradation of man by poverty, the ruin of women by starvation, and the dwarfing of childhood by physical and spiritual night—are not solved

I wonder if involuntary exploitation, elective abortion, euthanasia, and marginal care could be considered the lesser evils. If rejecting and mocking tradition and philosophy (i.e. spiritual) could be considered the lesser evil.

Anyway, the generational rebels have asked the wrong questions, conceived the wrong answers, and have progressed from extreme to another. They are following the wisdom of fanatics.

I don't buy the "avoiding panty line" argument. Don't actors employ all sorts of teeny, tiny, inconspicuous "genital coverings" when filming nude scenes?

We can put a man on the moon - yet we can't devise a way for a woman to cover her snatch when wearing a slinky dress?

I vote for the passive/aggressive theory: she fully intended it, but is playing "uptight feminist" and how DARE you try and sneak a look.

Further...whatever event she was attending - did she plan on sitting down and "secreting" all over the inside of the dress? I mean...unless she's dry as a bone down there...

Over at Big Hollywood they were complaining about Ashley Judd and had a "nude" picture of her up and someone's all... you're sexualizing and objectifying her, shame on you... but it was a still from a movie she'd voluntarily made. Yes, Hathaway is cashing in on her looks, certainly, and on being sexy, certainly... but unless this current movie has skin shots of her, I don't think she's done it. Not for big bucks and not for her "art".

Maybe I'm wrong. After all, I'm not googling the internet for nude pictures of her.

That this happened is evidence that it was intended. Maybe it wasn't.

I assume her statement and Lauer's prompt were all planned out ahead of time.

It's just too pat.

Anne Hathaway is one of the worst actresses in Hollywood who continually attempts to recreate roles that she has simply no chance of performing.

She dared to attempt to mime the insouciant charm of Barbara Feldon as Agent 99 in "Get Smart."

Then she made a fool of herself trying in her waifish attempt to embody the smoldering sexuality that was Julie Newmar as the Catwoman.

She is fraud I tells ya. A fraud.

Please have her take her bony twat elsewhere and leave the runway to the larger than life talents of Christina Hendricks and Sofía Vergara.

She needs to stay off my screen until Quentin Tarrentino begins his remake of "Popeye the Sailor Man."

Olive Oyl is just her speed.

I vote for the passive / aggressive theory, too: uptight conservative men LOVE talking about Hathaway's pussy but LOVE shaming HER.

I'm an uptight conservative man? No, I'm an old whoremonger.

Who's shaming her?

It's a clever PR move. It worked, didn't it? And, I haven't got anything against women flashing their beavers.

You think that Lauer voluntarily agreed to portray himself as a jackass?

Why would you assume that? I thought you encouraged skepticism, but here you are eagerly embracing another goofy theory.

I've done a lot of radio and TV interviews.

In the green room, it's common to go over your plans for the interview with either the interviewer or his rep.

The idea is to produce dramatic or comedic value on TV. These guys are actors, got it?

See above, Jake, you dumbass.

It's show biz!

Shitting Dumbass -

Evidence that something happened is not evidence that it was planned (i.e., "That this happened is evidence that it was intended").

No offense, Dumbass, but you are one of the dumber Althouse lemmings.

No, no, no, Joke.

Per shiloh/Jake, I'm Althouse's #1 doting seal.

After some thought - this is what I would do if I was an actress who had to deal with cameras aimed at my crotch.

I would have a special kind of panties made with a photo image silk-screened onto the outside of the crotch. The image would be the biggest, hairiest scrotum I could find. Let the press talk about THAT.

OR, another version could have a motherboard - the press could then speculate if I was carbon based or not.

Or, how about an image of a hand flipping the bird?

Or, an image of a stack of pancakes - confusing!

Darcy said...

I'm a little skeptical, too. With a slit up to your hip it would be hard not to be aware that you're constantly a few inches from revealing everything. They also know that they'll be photographed as soon as the car door opens.

Clever reply to Lauer, though. Tying it to her character in the film she's selling was masterful.

Ok, ALP might really be Lady Gaga.

She knows too she'll be taking a 3" leap out of an Escalade flash flash flash flash flash flash flash.

The stage show sure has a lot of good music in it.

So does that other one with the crap pile up all over the place. Cats.

I just watched it again, in fact.

America's guys were wildly in love with Feldon because she always showed Max she was satisfied with him even when he screwed up, just for trying. That was marriage itself.

Women set quests for their men, the men try to please them, the woman shows him she's satisfied with him. That can repeat forever.

It goes wrong with not showing she's satisfied and turns into nagging. That's sort of what feminism did wholesale, on a larger scale.

Hathaway's character isn't Feldon from the start, but a modern feminist competitor to Max, and her version of Get Smart is a traditional guy gets girl story with low key playing off of the militant feminist to Max's undiscouraged performance.

So not a replacement of the originial.

"I will never fly Virgin again. Last time, Dario and I were in the first-class section, and they seated us where we could hear EVERYTHING going on in the galley. Clink, clink, clink, the whole time. I asked them to stop, and the little motherfuckers gave me such attitude. It was horrible -- my husband saw what was coming, and he reached out to hold my hand, and I bawled all the way from Los Angeles to London."

This is from the one and only Ace of Spades, quoting someone quoting Ashley Judd. It is very apt here, now, and should be welcomed with open arms.

You little motherfuckers flying to London anytime soon might want to take extra notice of your boorish behavior.

And per Joe Biden every dollar not spent on cops causes rape, hence after Sheriff Joe did his job and President Obama went line by line through the budget, any waste is Democrat Direct Rape Per Official Statistics And Nothing Less.

Frankly, dressing like that makes a lot of sense if they ever have to rush you to the hospital emergency room.

Sure, if you're going to the emergency room because of some mishap between your legs.

And, by the way, you can have a vulnerable moment due to illness, or emotional trauma. I once had a friend who basically lost control of her body when she got the news her father had died. That is a vulnerable moment. But every woman knows how to exit a vehicle without flashing bystanders. That's not a vulnerable moment; that's a "hey, look at meeeeeeeeee" moment.

Why, beyond the truth, do you know Joe McCarthy?

Because many years ago he defined how an American, from Wisconsin no less, should act: Dead by 43.

It is assured that Democrats demand death when men like Reagan or Breitbart or McCarthy speak truth.

So, NotquiteunBuckley, you ask, then what's the answer?

"In the green room, it's common to go over your plans for the interview with either the interviewer or his rep."

When the interviewer is on your side. I've done maybe *one* radio interview in my life and we talked over all the questions and then on the air did it again, same stuff.

However... it seems to me that at a certain level "journalists" have decided that if they're not antagonistic they aren't doing their jobs. Barbara Walters asks Cristie why he's fat? Rosie scolds Tom Selleck about guns?

Most of what was intended may have been talked about in the green room but not all and not always.

Lauer is indeed a jerk, and I've been a fan of the lovely Ms. Hathaway since her show-stopping rendition of Queen's "Somebody to Love" in "Ella Enchanted."

But those female celebrities who choose to wear no underwear while wearing short skirts to their public appearances are hardly "unwilling participants" in their sexual commodification.
