Going to State College tomorrow to watch my Nittany Lions play the Badgers. Good thing the game is in State College. If it was in Madison, I suspect we might see Elmo dressed as a PSU cheerleader.

Ms Althouse, please. That's no way to talk to your husband. If Meade wants to stand there and lecture the dogs so be it.

I know the powers that be mean well... they have conjured the term/meme "going over the cliff" trying to create the right amount of impetus towards "doing something".

I'm not sure this X Games, free fall record breaking, adrenalin rush generation, "going over the cliff" means what the imagineers of the term thought to convey.

Communication is what I say and what you hear... seldom are they the same thing.

Could you not decide on the Lab so you got one of each color?

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

I mean... lets call it for what it is... "going over the cliff", in real terms, at its core simplicity, is a win win for the forces of bigger government.

In the words of Godfather... (ht Drudge) "You never want a serious crisis (going over the cliff) to go to waste and what I mean by that is it’s an opportunity to do things you didn’t think you could do before."

The only thing that occurs to me to ask is will the tax increase be bigger than the 2009 stimulous?

If the anwer to that is yes... OK OK OK...

Will it be bigger than ObamaCare?

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

It occurred to me listening to Obama that he says "we want to make sure" a lot... its code for something... something big and bold.

How else are we going to "make sure"?

I'm guessing Meade needs a "Lab" coat. Sometimes I crack myself up.

Sit!

Obama opens the "going over the cliff" metting... and the republicans go... ok ok ok.

WTF with the grill?

Chip Ahoy said...

It's "going over the cliff" now.

Then it's raise taxes by one old name and ten new names all at once and any resistance is the next new meme that it was all unavoidable but for

"Republican intransigence"

But it's what was wanted, to go over the cliff, it all goes to more taxation and more varied taxation larger government more control and less freedom incrementally and incidentally and it seems to suit the t-party types too because it instantly shrinks government and that seems a thrill. Deal with it. And any unanticipated problems arising from that like 6% tax increases on the Hurricane-struck homeowners, and unexpected increases in medical deductions from their paychecks with simultaneous increases in premiums and copays, increased energy cost, food cost, etc., and all that will be the next next new meme

"It's all Republicans fault"

But the pendulum will have finally swung by then its ineligible swing and the whole world become tired of all that and of all you, and you tired too, so back it goes to the hapless crew the clown posse the stupid party to take insurmountable debt that ties up generations and

"just shut up and fix it."

I'm seeing 1 of 4. The choco is in full sit at attention, the yellow is doing a half-sit (hip troubles or naughtiness?), Zeus looks like he's waiting for Meade's hiney to hit the deck. A portrait in Establishing Dominance. Love it! Thanks.

This is interesting:

Talks planned for next month on banning nuclear weapons in the Middle East will not take place, the United States said on Friday, a development likely to anger Arab states but please Israel.

Think maybe what's happening in Egypt has shaken the Obama folks a bit?

I saw an ad, on MTV I think, raising money to "restore" Sea Side Heights NJ... the area where they filmed Jersey Shore was pummeled by Sandy.

But the first thing that crossed my mind was... scam.

I asked a friend if he had seen the ad and he said... paraphrasing... 'Its sad to say, but I thought the same thing'.

That grill is pretty lame; not even fit for tailgating. I figured you would have one of those big, honkin' stainless steel ones that actually needs a Kohler engine mounted to it to move around. Must be hard to entertain with that itty bitty one... you would have to eat in shifts.

Something to put on your Santameade Christmas list...

edutcher said...

As I said, if Meade tried that with Yorks, one would be giving him a hard time ("ref, ref"), another would be looking at him like, "No, let's see you sit", and the third would be wandering around looking for something bad to do.

That's what the guys at Weimar thought.

Portable for camping.
Don't tell me you're a charcoal purist.

"Upscale to impress the neighbors"
Whoa! Now that's what I'm talking about! That says Meadehouse all over it! (except that one is overpriced; you can get a really good one for 4-5k).

"Effective and artsy"
Those are nice grills, but I find it hard to believe you can fit 11 whole chickens on there (unless you do them all beer can style).

"Downscale but workable"
That's what I have, minus the side burner. I had one with a side burner that I rebuilt 4 times (burners only last so long)that I finally had to retire. I was using one like Ann has in the picture, and an employee felt sorry for me and bought my current one as a Christmas present. It's still hard to squeeze enough food on when the in-laws come over for the holidays, but it beats the heck out of the table top one I had. Plus that puppy would flare up so often you would swear it was Old Testament times with the burnt offerings.

They camp out on their back porch? That's "roughing it" in style!

It may work for dogs that get all their treats from well natured masters, but looking at Drudge headlines, it sure doesn't work for people.

And is that what we want from Obamaphones anyway?

I wish I could think this through in a clear way to express my thoughts. If the actuaries made a mistake, tough. It ought to come out of profit. And the profit should be enough to cover it, without government coming to the rescue.

New Orleans was a disaster waiting to happen. Was this lost on the insurance companies? Doubtful, when people have real money on the line.

What about as genetics becomes clearer? My wife had three cousins die, leaving a father alive with the same hear disorder, three dead, within 6 months. One even planning the funeral of her sister died 2 weeks at 51 before the funeral. This was totally chance, as no one knew, and the woman, warm hearted, beautiful, had scheduled an exam. The stress probably exacerbated her genetic condition, and sadly, the father is the only one left. He had his conditions surgically rectified.

Retroactive reassessments are profit gaining, and in my mind are wrong. However, forward looking understandings should not be. Should carriers of Cystic Fibrosis obtain taxpayer, or "insurance" dollars having children at risk? I think not. Someday it will be cured, but until then, knowledgeable parents should not risk it.

The end game of folly like this is like putting the brakes on moving forward. Capitalism can help, as can the actuaries. Government, it screws it up. People need to be responsible, even if it is painful.

Try it.
It's fabulous!

My other grill is a big manly black Weber kettle. Handles a 30# turkey. The little Go-Anywhere is great for steak or salmon on a plank for two.

I have two Weber grills (both are old enough to have been "Made in USA"). One is a portable "Smokey Joe" for camping and the other is big black gas grill with a rotisserie attachment. Here's the latter in action: link

So, I'm doing some catch up reading and I come across this item about health disparity and the need to equalize health in the New England Journal of Medicine:

What the S. family and other families like them desperately need are customized support services that are delivered with empathy and an understanding of the greater contextual forces that drive and shape behaviors.

OK. That part I can agree with, and I think that traditionally religious charities have done a good job of providing that kind of service. But then we get to the next sentence:

What they deserve are the conditions in which all people can be healthy, including equal opportunities for “education, housing, employment, living wages, access to health care, access to healthy foods and green spaces, occupational safety, hopefulness, and freedom from racism, classism, sexism, and other forms of exclusion, marginalization, and discrimination based on social status....

...If we are to break the vicious cycle of inequality and uphold the tradition of physicians as champions of social justice in the global arena, we must widen our perspective beyond the individual to confront the “causes of the causes” at multiple levels, so as to help create social and physical environments that promote good health for all. In the same vein, multipronged approaches that include cross-sectorial collaboration among nontraditional partners (including health care providers, lawmakers, and welfare workers) and bold change in social policy are needed to ensure equal health and justice for all.”

No one ever told me part of my job would be to bring Utopia to America.

"Try it." - Meade

That's the wife's idea of camping. The in-laws had a mobile home in a campground up in Wild Rose. Her idea of camping includes a color t.v., oven, shower and a real bed. We did the tent thing once, she swore never again.
