"'I am not particularly happy with Obama,' the retired auto-parts storeowner said of the man he supported in 2008."

"His wife, walking beside him on the Military Ridge state trail, overheard him voicing doubt. 'What about my reproductive rights?' she asked, clearly upset. 'No, we are voting for Obama!'"

Auto-parts... lady parts... somewhere in Wisconsin.
Discussing his uncertainty, the retired couple walked off along the popular recreational trail in this small town...
How old does a woman have to be before she stops thinking first and above all about her reproductive rights? Well, at least they are still "discussing his uncertainty" as they walk away, even though she made a declarative statement about how the 2 of them are voting. Maybe he needed to work through his feelings to understand why he is so fuzzy about his reasons for doing what he is going to do.

Somewhere back in the dark ages, I learned that human"reproduction" means making babies.

Interesting that feminists use the term "reproductive rights" as code for "the right to kill unborn babies".

I was once under the impression that feminism was about women being taken seriously for other reasons besides our reproductive organs. Loutish, sexist men defined women first and foremost as vaginas. Women fought for the right to become educated, to join the professions, to become respected for their intelligence and ability.

Well, silly me. It turns out feminism in 2012 is all about defining yourself first and foremost in exactly the same way those bad old male chauvinists used to - as pussy.

Similiarly, I once thought that civil rights for minorities meant working toward a society as color-blind as possible. Instead, we're as obsessed with skin color as any southern slaveholder ever was. The slave South came up with ridiculous catagories, such as "octoroons," to ensure that anybody with a black ancestor would be denied equal rights with blacks. Well, now we have created our own exotic catagories: "white Hispanics," and Lizzie Warren claiming Native American status on the basis of family stories.

My, how we've progressed.

Based on his record and background, Romney is actually the pragmatic CENTRIST the media claims these campaigns always lack.

Texan99 said...

I don't think you guys should discount the probability that a 60+ woman would consider feminist issues important in her vote. I'm past reproduction myself, but I still remember the issues that concerned me.

It's just that, for me, reproductive autonomy doesn't include either abortion or taxpayer-funded contraception, so no amount of vagina-scare talk is going to get me to pull a Democratic lever. I have confidence in the ability of women to control what they need to control in their lives as long as we have a functioning economy and some semblance of property rights.

Obama: fighting for the conceptual right of the post-menopausal to have babies!

Maybe ObamaCare will pay for a post-menopausal woman's right to use assisted reproduction technology to bear a child (it's been done) & Obama will support the right to abort that child for any reason.

Wait for some kind of update to the Life of Julia - they didn't want to turn off the youth vote by going that far into Julia's life, but if demographics show a need, they will add some panels. Post-menopausal Julia after a childless, single life will be able to bear a child of her own & of course, the government will take care of the child if/when Julia is unable to.

==================
It's not about Romney - it is about a belief many women have, hardened in stone, that the real Republican is a Right to Life fanatic that thinks all abortion is murder , all women that have had an abortion are murderers, all women that support abortion in certain instances are murderers.

Reagan could be anti-abortion and women let it pass, because they got strong signals that Reagan didn't hate them and didn't want to criminalize them.
But the Fundies and RTLrs were on full display in the Terri Schiavo fiasco. And a lightbulb went on in many women's head that it was now about Feds and law enforcement being used by the male Republicans to criminalize end of life decisions. And clearly on display in the Republican's Schiavo Fiasco was a craving to overturn Roe and make all abortions criminal since "life begins at conception as Sweet Baby Jesus ensouls the sweet babies of his".

Republicans are also tricked a little by polls that have women protesting they are not Nazi eugenicists because majorities claim they do not want abortions simply if the fetus is doomed by genetic disease or so defectibe that the mother's life is effectively over save as caregiver for the "Downs Baby Jesus gifted her with, etc.".

Steve Austin said it well...Until the Todd Akin crowd recognizes they have to tone down the rhetoric and settle for incremental progress like fighting for the partial birth ban the GOP will always be working from behind.

It's hardly a red herring when you have GOP Senate candidates saying that he opposes a rape exception because a RTL quack doctor told him that women who actually were raped vs. pretending to be raped never get pregnant.

The quack Right to Lifer says that Jesus gave women natural defenses to prevent conception and the new soul needing saving -if they were really raped vs. willingly partaking in carnal pleasures and pretending to be raped later.

That is the depth of stupidity Republican RTL zealots will go to to justify no exceptions save life of the mother.

Doesn't help Santorum trotting out his Trisomy 18 kid as a gift from Jesus every family should similarly be blessed with.

Or male Republicans that retort back to women asking "what about the physical health of the mother" with "what about the physical health of the baby being murdered?' - and leave thinking they won the debate and women will soon see the errors of their baby-killing ways...

All this fear about reproductive rights. Assuming that this is about the Supreme Court and abortion, the truth is that there is utterly no chance that Romney will appoint justices who will "turn the tide" on the court.

There are at most 3 justices who support overturning Roe. Scalia, Thomas and maybe Alito. Roberts clearly will not as he missed the cut at Obamacare. Of the remaining 3, I wonder how many actually would vote to overturn something that was declared stare decisis in 1993? Something that by now 3 generations of women have relied upon.

Perhaps none.

Despite it having been a completely lawless and impolitic decision, the window to redress it is now closed. That should sink in soon.

How many times did the Republicans mention either gays or abortion at their convention? How many times does Romney or Ryan mention either in any context at all?

How many times did the Democrats mention gays or "reproductive rights" at their convention? It was all "vagina" and all "yay gay military!" all the time. Over and over. I watched it and listened to the speeches just like you did.

The Republicans aren't going to be allowed to change the subject.

Because if the Democrats talk about the economy (or now, foreign policy) they know they lose.

O had close to 5,000 yesterday as the pavilion was almost full. Then again how many were union types picked up on free buses and bribed with food and a day at the lakefront remains to be seen.

I'm disappointed in that mustard museum. You call that Mustard 101 at Poupon U?

It's a crap quiz, films and such, a joke.

You'd do better at Wikipedia. But here's what Professor Ahoy would teach at his Mustard 101, it's a very simple class, everyone gets an A.

To make the most extraordinary mustard you will have ever tasted once you do this, buy a tin of mustard powder and dump it into a bowl. Add a few tablespoons of your favorite vinegar to a thick paste and behold the amazing aroma that knocks you backward. Add water to desired spreadable thinness and continue thinning to your heart's condimentment, I mean, contentment.

No salt, no MSG, no additional spices, no nut'n. Do this once, and you will never buy prepared mustard again.

Additionally you can buy seeds yellow or brown and heat those if you wish, or not, or crush them, or not, and add them too, or not.

The mustard family, Brassicaceae, includes horseradish and wasabi. I find those components are evident in mustard prepared directly from powder. And the effect is so awesome to me that I recommend it, and as much as I do recommend it, I note also, other people like this a heck of lot more than I do.

And you're over there thinking probably, "So what. That family you mentioned also includes cabbage and radishes, so does your mustard carry those elements too?" Then I would say, "No, it doesn't, Smartass. I was wrong about everyone getting an A. F for you at Poupon U."

One of the things she said was, "I don't know how any woman could vote for Romney". I don't know what other thing this could be other than "reproductive rights", but there may be some other women's issue she had in mind.

I did not however respond in the two ways I was tempted to do: One, point out that my wife intends to vote Romney and two, the real voter gap is not men v. women, it is married people v. unmarried people. I didn't want to point this one out because she was divorced a couple of year's ago.

What a load of horseshit.
We lost lives because an enemy attacked -- a radical Islamist enemy we in some ways cannot change, in other ways that we went out of our way to piss off.

The crap about holding Presidents responsible for each life the enemy takes is utter partisan extremist drivel.
Like Lincoln, and not a better President who would have had Zero Casualties - killed 660,000 people in the Civil War. Or FDR and Truman failed utterly in WWII because we had 280,000 dead.

Same holds true of the idiot notion swallowed by both right wing and left wing extremists that bin Laden was the SOLE person with the LEADER/CEO of Terror authority to launch an operation on the USA.

And by their brain-dead logic, which "dreams" typifies:

1. Clinton KILLED 2900 people on 9/11 because he failed to kill or arrest bin Laden, which would have ended all activities by radical Muslims to kill Americans.
2. Bush in turn also KILLED the same 2900 Americans because the "attack happened on his watch and he didn't stop it"!!
3. And of course, "Obama ended all global terrorism by leading the mission to kill bin Laden, the SOLE Head Evildoer!!".

What a brainless crock of shit.

When you face an intelligent thinking enemy in battle, you will take casualties, no matter how well-trained and talented your "high tech heroes" are, no matter how well led a military or government is.

And in the scale of wars, 2900 is a pretty low piddling amount as wars go...and no, the 9/11 Victims and the famous Victim Families are not held by the world to be the Greatest and most Sanctified Victims Ever.

More so than in the past, but our idiot Democracy has always had a certain number of single issue voters.

Both Parties have taken damage when they listen too much to, or gear Primaries so, that those single issue voters have undue clout that does not advance the nations welfare.

Government employee unions have damaged the country by only voting on who gives them the most goodies from taxpayers.

Blacks who only vote on skin color damage the Party and the country by elevating incompetent black leaders for life that damage the country, even blacks.

The Republicans kow-towing to Right to Life fanatics and boot-licking the Top 1% that has concentrated most new wealth created in America to themselves in the last 30 years - has damaged the Republicans with the far larger woman's population (also with too many single issue voters on reproductive issues), and workers who see the Republicans as in the pockets of the 1%.

And by workers, I don't mean OWS nutballs, but the workers that haven't seen their wages grow in 30 years in real dollars, jobs threatened weekly with export to China..while Republicans bootlick the bankers and owners whose wealth on average has quadrupled in the last 30 years.

This.

Liberal women don't seem to be able to grasp that it is a diminishment of themselves, of their individuality and brains, to reduce their political concerns to "reproductive rights." They are doing to themselves exactly what they accuse sexist males of doing. The same is true of blacks and Hispanics who vote their skin color, or gays who base their vote entirely on the gay marriage issue.

With the help of a sycophant press, Obama is running a brilliant campaign. His people issue decrees which conflict with the rights of the Catholic church. When the Republicans defend the Catholic church he accuses them of being against women's reproductive rights. That is a double win for him. He attacks the largest Christian church in the world, and in the process turns his attack into a Republican War on Women.

At the same time the women are angry at the Republicans because of their manufactured War on Women, he is doing his best to promote the interests of Islam at the expense of Christians, Hindus, and Jews around the world.

You have to give Obama his due. He has no consicence, but his ability to lie and deceive is exceptional.
