MSNBC takes Romney's "WaWa" remark out of context for the purpose of mockery.

Shame on Andrea Mitchell and Chris Cillizza for their clown work in this travesty of journalism.

You've got to watch the clip, knowing how completely out of context it is. Look at the bullshit blank disbelief mugging they do for the camera. How embarrassing!

Here's something else out of context:
Now I don't need no WaWa
And I know how sweet life can be
So I get myself free... of WaWa
I don't need no WaWa
IN THE COMMENTS: t-man said:

Yes, there's no internal capital W. I  checked the company's website. I was carrying over the error made a the WasHington PoSt website.

ADDED: Rush Limbaugh is opening his show today with this story. MSNBC is doing it again, he says, connecting it to the doctoring of George Zimmerman's 911 call. "It was blatant and they got caught... and now everybody is ridiculing them."

Didn't the Prof write about the faux concern from the likes of Diane Sawyer that the Romneys are out of touch because they own several homes?

When's the last time Andrea Mitchell-Greenspan and husband Alan stopped by WaWas for a meatball sandwich and Baked Lays?

Also, MSNBC actually travestied journalism twice: The full clip opens with her reference to George H.W. Bush's alleged bafflement over a supermarket scanner during his re-election campaign. A story since long debunked.

Actually, I think it is just the opposite. This is just more red meat for their base. I don't think there is anyone left watching MSNBC who is not a complete partisan. I don't know because I don't watch MSNBC, but I don't think there is anyone an air who is not a complete partisan.

This is their business model. I'm not even sure their sorry they were caught.

Wow, even taken out of context, that's a pretty dumb thing to attack on. I've grown up with touch screens, and I still think that they're pretty darn amazing when I think about them. And don't even get me started on how crazy the internet is.

Paddy O said...

Ordering sandwiches on a touchpad screen? I'll admit, I've never seen that, and I'd be impressed. I mean I've seen touchpad screens, but never where the customer uses them to order. How handy!

I still am mildly excited whenever I get to use the self-checkout and scan items myself. I get a touchpad screen there, I guess.

Not that either of these things are the point of Romney's speech, but still, I think the feigned shock by the newscasters is doubly silly. It's not ubiquitous technology in stores or restaurants (except for employees).

WaWa is a mid-Atlantic-coast entity. I had never heard of it until visiting my folks after they moved to Maryland. And I never checked out the sandwich-ordering system, because all we ever did was stop for coffee.

(WaWa is apparently famous for its coffee; they sell a gazillion different varieties, and a panoply of flavored creamers to match. Nothing is really brewed strong enough for me, but you can't complain of a lack of diversity. Especially by comparison with your average convenience-store-attached-to-a-gas-station anywhere else in the country.)

Never heard of Wawa's. Went to an Oragne Leaf frozen yogurt place. It was pretty amazing. Get exactly the flavors, toppings and quantities you want. Kinda expensive though.

Last time I went to the post office, the form was the size of a postcard. I've also learnt that you can change your address online.

Yeah, just try getting them to do something simple like close you mailbox so the rain doesn't get your mail wet and every body driving by can see if you have package or check worth stealing. Left notes, called the post office, filled out online complaints, etc. I had to write my Congresswoman. It's still left open about once a week. Plus, the USPS website isn't the least bit intuitive.

Another Post Office story. A couple of years ago, I went on a trip and forgot to tell the post office to hold my mail. I figured I could go to the post office at my destination and they could forward the hold request to my local post office. Wrong. They told me to go to the local libray, get online and make the request that way. A requaest through the actual post office would take 3-4 days. I just called my ex-wife and she held it for me. When you get better service from your ex-wife than you do an agency, something major is wrong.

In case you're wondering, the form Romney is talking about is the CMS 855 form at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services web site:

The one I looked at was only 28 pages, damn that liar Romney! (/sarcasm) It took me 10 minutes of Google searching to find out which form he was talking about. It's funny though, there is a "change of address" form on the site that is only 6 pages, but if you look at the description of the 855 form, it's used for new AND updated registrations.

For those of you that have never been in a Wawa, you have no idea what you are missing. They are awesome stores. 15 types of fresh coffee and everything you need. And Romney was 100% correct in his enthusiasm for the machine where you order a fresh sandwich. (24 hours a day I might add). Sadly, I live out west now but I just went home for 11 days. I went to about 10 different Wawas over that time, and went to one at least once a day. My daughters LOVED that they could click on the machine, pay the cashier, and their sandwich was ready for them, just like Romney said. Of course MSNBC has to selectively edit the video, because they can't show where Romney speaks freely without a teleprompter and is quite compelling. He is proving to be a much better candidate than I dreamed he would be. I will enthusiastically be voting for him, unlike McCain.

Touch-screen ordering is terrific. Versions of it have been around for years (government-owned Amtrak does a good job with it for example). There's nothing wrong with praising touch-screen ordering. But to call it "amazing" sounds slightly out of touch. If you disagree with MSNBC's point, fair enough. But Romney's remark wasn't taken out of context.

So is he saying it should be easier to commit Medicare fraud?

Garage,

Is the problem that even a 33 page form does nothing to stop actual Medicare fraud or that the government is spending such a grotesquely huge amount of money on medical care that even 33 pages of forms and months of missing payments does not stop a legitimate provider from dropping Medicare?

Distant, centralized control + gobs of cash = certain fraud

Shanna said...

If so, you just lost Romney, because despite criticizing the inefficiency of Medicare -- and blaming Obama for long-term budget projections that are largely due to Medicare -- you're never going to hear him call for cutting Medicare. On the contrary, he's criticizes Obama for slightly cutting Medicare.

At the same time, he supports the Ryan plan, which retains the name "Medicare" but replaces actually existing Medicare with private health insurance.

And because this new system of private health insurance that is nothing like Medicare as we know it would still be called "Medicare," anyone who accuses the plan of ending Medicare as we know it is lying.

I've worked for a private insurance company, for two physician groups, and for a hospital. I can say that AF, you are unequivocally full of it up to your earlobes.

Medicare is WAY more difficult to deal with from the provider AND the patient side, than any individual health insurer.

MSNBC deserves all the abuse they are getting for their selective editing, and then some. This is just a taste of what's to come this October, I'm sure.

That much said, I so want Wawa to come out with a line of advertising that makes predominant use of the word "amazing" or "amazement." I want them to somehow benefit from this, because they're the best convenience store ever, hands-down. I was 30 before I ever visited one, but now I'm a convert. Clean stores, fresh fruit, fee-free ATMs, gas and restrooms (at some branches), and the touchscreen ordering is so convenient.

Just looking at the validity of the 33 page form claim, I found the 6 page form and, thanks to Xmas, the 27 page form.

They seem to be in conflict as each offers an opportunity to change the provider's address.

And note that 27 plus 6 equals 33.

I can see how conflicting forms, and differing responses from ill-informed CMS operators turned a simple address change into a major headache.

Whether or not that can be expanded to a general condemnation of all things governmental is questionable, but it does make a good talking point.

You still don't get it or are pretending you don't. They edited out his remarks preceding the Wawa moment. His example of amazing was the difference between Medicare and Wawa.

I just got off the phone with UPIN, another government entity. Apparently, a secretary at the medical school where I teach filled out the application years ago and guessed at the secret question answers, like where I was born and what my father's middle name was. I tried to log in and couldn't do it. I spent 30 minutes on hold and talking to a nice lady who finally let me in to correct the file.

The Post Office has touch screen ordering. Romney could have used that comparison at how stupid Medicare is. Medicare pays doctors about 20% of what they bill and two years later. That's why a lot of us have quit.

I can't explain the sheer joy of ordering a sandwich on a touchscreen, taking your receipt to go pay for it and whatever chips or drink you're getting, then returning to the sandwich counter to have your freshly made sandwich ready and waiting for you - complete with lettuce, brown mustard (not yellow), and extra pickles. Or onions, oregano and oil if that's your thing. Or extra meat but still just one serving of cheese. The possibilities are endless and all right there on the screen.

I don't fault Romney one bit. It IS amazing. Now if only every restaurant let you order that way...

And to those who have questioned whether Wawa is really the best convenience store in the country - it is. Hands down. No question. I haven't had one near me since 2004, and I still miss it. Wawa puts Kum & Go, Open Pantry, Sheetz, 7-11, Quick Trip/ KwikTrip - puts them all to shame.

No. She played the Wawa portion about the buttons and the government could profit from a little competition, but did not play the contextual setting about the optometrist who moved across town, needed to change his address with the Feds so he could get paid by Medicare, and was hit with a 33 page form. To fill out the form he called the Feds for help, completed the form, sent it in. A few weeks later the Feds said he'd filled out the form wrong and provided him with a fresh 33 page form.

That's when Romney went on to compare Wawa with WaDC.

Shanna said...

Depends on what it is. For sandwiches in particular I think it would be great, because there are SO many options - condiments, meats, veggies - that it would be an efficient way to order for you and the employee.

Dust Bunny Queen said...

@ Chris

Didn't Romney say something about a "33 page form to change your address" at the post office?
Last time I went to the post office, the form was the size of a postcard. I've also learnt that you can change your address online. Perhaps Romney should get out more often.

If you are a licensed professional (as is the person in Romney's illustration) it is a huge big fucking deal to change your address. As a licensed securities representative, life insurance agent and registered investment advisor (RIA) when I moved my office, I had to contact at least 4 different federal agencies, several at EACH state where I was licensed to do business. PLUS contact each and everyone of the many investment and insurance companies that I was licensed to do business with.

It is even worse when you are also changing your banking/direct deposit at the same time.

"Romney told the audience about an optometrist who wanted to change his address and subsequently received 33 pages of paperwork from the federal government, which begat a months-long bureaucratic nightmare during which the optometrist in question wasn't receiving his checks. "

Perhaps you should try actually reading the linked article instead of spewing without thinking.

WaWa's strikes me as a clean place packed with the latest in foodstuffs. One hopes that Romney didn't order foie gras, which is forbidden in Romney's native Chicago by orders of the city council. Just outside the city's borders some restaurants offer the forbidden meat as a delicacy.

Romney spent time in Paris as a youth, where they eat frogs' legs and all kinds of meats, including foie gras and eyes of newt. Obama might just order up a dog as a cold cut sub, though, forgetting he's no longer in Indonesia and can't have Fido on a bun.

But to show Romney was out of touch, they couldn't resist doctoring video..just like it was necessary to get the hidden racist truth about George Zimmerman out.

2. Pity they live in the age of the Internet. They get caught where in the past, "Out of touch", "he deserted the military!" liberal and progressive Jewish "Narratives" against their enemies stood relatively unchallenged.

3. One reason the people detest media and certain pols is that we know they are of average intelligence at best, perhaps lower fot most, certainly lower for some....Yet on air they pretend to be wise and all-knowing and are SHOCKED!! and APPALLED!! that some leader they detest does not know all the details of Dingell-Norwood, the Ledbetter Act, or that the whole country already knew about and was impressed with the WAWA ordering system before "out-of-touch rich man Romney" said it was amazing.

4. And it sure helps their Black Messiah in a swing state to denigrate the other candidate for saying he saw something in Pennsyvania that impressed him!!! To inform people in Pennsyvania that the wise media pundits in the bag for Obama say that they really don't have anything special and worthy of praise in the state...compared to DC and Manhattan....The only thing Pennsyvania has are problems - the people who suffer in black areas of Philly - all the hero government police, firefighters and teachers that need the Federal government to save their jobs. Nothing that their state has would please or amaze a better informed man than Romney..

As of July 1, the currently for profit multi-specialty physicians practice for which I do billing will become not-for-profit like the hospital system that owns it. We started the credentialing process for the change in August of 2011. Why? Because that 33 page form to change our billing information with Center for Medicare/Medicaid Services had to be completed and accepted by CMS before we could begin the process of changing our credentialing information with commercial insurers.

CMS controls not only our Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement, but also the National Provider Identifiers which every one of our 70 doctors, physician assistants and nurse practitioners must have attached to his/her medical license before any commercial insurer will credential them.

33 pages x 70 doctors and then another, albeit shorter, set of forms for each commercial payer. And we know that even though we've worked more than six months on this, there will be payers who don't pay us at all during the month of July.

I wish it was as simple as a postcard...heck, I wish CMS were as simple as BlueCross and BlueShield.
