Potential "upset" in the Wisconsin recall race.

From a Journal Sentinel column titled "John Doe probe looms over Walker's recall election":
Republican activists will be upset if Milwaukee prosecutors file complaints against additional Walker aides before [the recall election on] June 5, arguing that the Democratic district attorney would be trying to influence the election.

But Democrats will be equally upset if charges wait until after the election, especially if Walker wins. Likewise, Republicans would accuse [Milwaukee County District Attorney John] Chisholm of trying to use the courts to tar the governor coming out of the recall race.
"Upset" is a funny word. Did you know that it originally meant "Set up, erected, raised up" (OED)? How did it get... upset? I think the origin is in the stomach. The meaning "Physically disordered" is "said esp. of the stomach." It seems to be the same "up" we find in "throw up" and "upchuck"!

The Milwaukee County District Attorney's office? The one where 43 attorneys and staffers signed recall-petitions?

They'll be highly impartial, no doubt about it.

What were republican activist's opinions on Georgia Thompson and timing of those charges?

the meaning changed at the 1919 sanford stakes, when "upset" was the only horse to beat "man o' war".

Also means emotionally agitated.

Which also applies.

The biggest upset would be if the Journal-Sentinel reported on the substance and effect of the Walker reforms, rather than giving a high schoolers view of the politics.possio movire

I wonder if Walker had anything to say about the Georgia Thompson indictment?

Why yes, he did:

"Unfortunately, we have a Governor and administration that condones unethical and illegal behavior," Walker said in a statement on Jan. 24, 2006. "The people of Wisconsin deserve better."

"Today's indictment provides further confirmation that the Doyle administration is damaged and must be removed from the Capitol," said Walker, a Wauwatosa Republican, of his Democratic predecessor. "Governor Doyle needs to purge his administration of individuals who place politics and special interests ahead of the people of Wisconsin."

Walker went on to call on Doyle to adopt a series of reforms that the candidate was proposing.

"Little can be said to underscore the seriousness of this charge. I am hopeful that the people of Wisconsin will allow me the opportunity to clean up Madison with the same fervor that guided my reform movement in Milwaukee County."
Link.

What was Georgia Thompson running for at that time? Gist of the column seems to be how to handle the timing of charges when the subject is running for office. Charge before the election vs. after the election.

Looks like Barrett has some experience with this dynamic, so if he wins the primary and charges would be filed, there may be a precedent to follow:

In 2004, then-District Attorney E. Michael McCann moved quickly to investigate allegations against acting Mayor Marvin Pratt, hitting him with five civil violations of campaign finance law and a $2,500 fine just eight days before the election. Pratt was then defeated by Tom Barrett, the current mayor who is now running for the right to challenge Walker in June.

I imagine Rahm is on top of this.

Straight out of the recall playbook. I, for one, would welcome Chisholm filing charges since it will reveal him as the partisan he is.

Was Doyle in the middle of a recall election when Walker made that statement? I seem to recall Doyle serving until January 2011 but I might be mistaken.

Just a 'regular' election.

Republicans tried recalling Doyle. Twice. They could never get enough signatures. Funny, there is still a Twitter handle, Recall Doyle here.

In addition, Walker helped lead the First Breath Alliance to recall Feingold and Kohl. here Even made a few bucks off it:

The effort fell short by approximately 30,000 signatures, but Walker was rewarded for his help to the organization by being one of only three statehouse campaigns to receive a share-- $697.42-- of the group's remaining funds.

But because these cases are so rare in Wisconsin, prosecutors haven't set up guidelines on what to do around election time.

Its a blue state.. why would you hamstring John Doe investigations when the target most likely will be a republican?

Read on a little further and I get my answer.. its a dam good answer btw.

But because these cases are so rare in Wisconsin, prosecutors haven't set up guidelines on what to do around election time.

But that only lead me to ask another question.. What do you do when something is rare?

In medicine I would assume you want to share it with people who are looking into it.. but in politics.. I dont know.. So I just thought I wonder what our Imperious Leader has to say?

I Googled - what do you do when something is rare?

I stayed way from complicated words like decide and chose do instead to improve Google chances of understanding my question.

So, I got my answer..

Paul Weller - You do something to me (Rare Live).. and I love it.

When you find something rare and dont know what to do..

You blame somebody!

So the Journal decides to run an article on the John Doe investigation, with absolutely zero new information. But MIlwaukee's bond rating got lowered and not a fucking peep.

Wonder why that is?

@ www.jsonline.com:

A new poll shows Republican Gov. Scott Walker leading all his Democratic rivals in this summer's recall election, though his edge over Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett is within the poll's margin of error.

The survey by the Democratic-leaning firm Public Policy Polling also found Barrett with a lead over former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk in the May 8 primary.
...............................
In head-to-head matchups, Walker led Barrett 50-45, led Falk 50-43, led La Follette 51-40 and led Vinehout 50-38.

The poll of 1,136 likely voters was conducted Friday through Sunday for the Daily Kos website and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points. Walker's lead was beyond the margin of error in all cases except for his race with Barrett.

For the primary race, the poll was of 810 likely voters and has a slightly larger margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points. In that contest, Barrett had 38 percent, Falk 24 percent, La Follette 9 percent and Vinehout 6 percent. But 22 percent remained undecided

Garage you are blowing smoke into the wind to point out on the Althouse/Meade blog all the Republican efforts at recall as they are just against it. But the smell of rats in the Walker administration during the Milwaukee period are growing stronger and may boost the recall efforts this time.

Growing stronger? Nothing has happened in months. Nah. What's growing stronger is the smell of your hopes and dreams. Thats what happens when things go bad.
