"Breitbart’s Obama Video Is a Total Dud."

Says Brett Smiley at New York Magazine.

I agree. In the video — which appears in long form at the link — Obama is a Harvard Law student introducing a highly respected Harvard Law professor, and he does an outstanding job, displaying the  now-familiar charm, and even breaking the tension and getting a laugh from a crowd of protesters that had been displaying a grim, aggrieved demeanor. I am impressed by Obama's mildness and moderation in this video, and I remember very well the controversy that led to Professor Derrick Bell's protest in 1990. I was a visiting professor at Boston University Law School in the fall of 1990, and I used to attend a reading group called "FemCrits" that included BU, Harvard, and other female law professors in the area. I saw and heard plenty of the radical lawprofs of that era, and Barack Obama does not come across as their acolyte. He seems independently well-grounded and perhaps even aloof from the controversy. Obama had just been elected president of the Harvard Law Review, its first black president. That put him in a position where he may have been called upon to do the introduction, and he handles the task with diplomacy and aplomb. What I see in that video is a great and natural politician, not some hardcore radical.

I doubt Bell calls them “white people.” After all, he calls his fellow professors “white boys.”

Granted, this was way back in 1993. Before the end of Jim Crow. Before the Civil Rights Act. Back then, every black professional referred to their Caucasian peers as “white boys.”

You know, the guy who think Katrina was some kind of punishment from God. (Which God...there's a bunch of 'em??)

So...they're racist because a college founder was a bigot?

Imagine the shock and awe when Duke students learn that their college's founder --- well, wasn't exactly a believer in racial equality.

Ditto Harvard.

And what exactly is your bizarre obsession with Reverand Wright...other than being a racist yourself?

Stunner. Love won't hold a black man to the same standards she hold a white man to.

Color me amazed.

I mean, going to that school = bad but listening to "Reverend" Wright for 20 years = not bad.

Jay, they're Progressives. They assume nobody listens to blacks because they surely do not.
They don't think anybody views blacks as equals because they do not, have not, and likely will not ever do so.

I've visited the site on a number of occasions and it's filled with hateful, bigoted and racist commenters.

Less so than Daily Kos, LGF, or any other Prog sites.

And for you to assume the people who attend Pat Robertson University aren't in tune with his political and religious beliefs illustrates how stupid you are.

So, Obama agreed with Rev Wright, eh? Or do you only go to school if you agree with somebody's religious beliefs, not church?

James - If you agree; Explain how President Obama has had a detrimental effect on education.

He did nothing while his party killed the DC voucher system. That was criminally negligent.

I say you get out there and help Santorum/Romney/Newt wipe out pre-natal care for women and contraception and a woman's choice and "government" having literaly ANYTHING to do with our daily lives.

Is lame hyperbole all you have left?

You don't have a record that is defensible.

But, hey, you can try and throw crap on a wall to see if it sticks.

Even after taking out Osama Bin Laden you couldn't bring yourself to give the man one iota of credit for handling the situation in a way others before him had not.

Obama is unique in having the chance to kill an enemy of the country?

Do you know no history at all?

Nobody likes hearing nothing but endless negativity and whining

You could shorten it to "Nobody like hearing ME", Love. That'd be quicker.

Synova - It said; "Niggerhead"

Given that his family didn't take 20 years to fix it --- I have no problem with it. Hardly Perry's fault. They didn't OWN the land to do anything before it was fixed.

One of those people is Bell.

Can anybody name a highly regarded academic who has their child enrolled in Bell's classes by choice? I'm betting the answer will be no.

Love,

Your hate group numbers above, which are hardly complete or even very useful, if used, only prove that hate groups pretty much match the percentage of the race they belong to in the population, although blacks seem to have a slightly higher percentage of race groups than their population when you leave out "general hate" which tells us nothing.

But a more interesting question about that is: Which hate group does Obama's expediently former church belong to?

Would it be the Black Separatist, the Christian Identity, the General Hate, or the unlisted: Hate for Profit from Black Folks type.

Also not listed is the Hate Whitey So People Think I'm Down type. I bet you have a card.

pm317 said...

Here is why they hid all this stuff. It is not race neutral -- Obama was very much into racial politics; his adviser Jarrett is very much into it (see a long NYT article on her that says how she wanted the campaign to use the race as a tool); his wife wrote a thesis on it. They wanted to build his brand as being post-racial. But there was all this material that showed that things were different. So what do you do? Hide them.

Holding a position as an assistant counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (LDF), he worked alongside Thurgood Marshall, Robert L. Carter and Constance Baker Motley.
(What a bunch of losers.)

He supervised more than 300 school desegregation cases and spearheaded the fight of James Meredith to secure admission to the University of Mississippi over the protests of Governor Ross Barnett.
(Is that all?)

He was appointed to the law faculty of the University of Southern California as executive director of the Western Center on Law and Poverty.
(No big deal?)

Hired to teach at Harvard, Bell established a new course in civil rights law, published a celebrated case book, Race, Racism and American Law, and produced a steady stream of law review articles. As a teacher, Bell became a mentor and role model to a generation of students of color, becoming the first black tenured professor in Harvard Law School's history.
(Hey, who hasn't?)

The, in 1980 Bell became the dean of the University of Oregon School of Law, becoming one of the first African-Americans to ever head a non-black law school.

The radical right caught fire last year, as broad-based populist anger at political, demographic and economic changes in America ignited an explosion of new extremist groups and activism across the nation.

Hate groups stayed at record levels — almost 1,000 — despite the total collapse of the second largest neo-Nazi group in America.

Furious anti-immigrant vigilante groups soared by nearly 80%, adding some 136 new groups during 2009.

And, most remarkably of all, so-called "Patriot" groups — militias and other organizations that see the federal government as part of a plot to impose “one-world government” on liberty-loving Americans — came roaring back after years out of the limelight.

It's simply not accurate to describe Bell as "highly respected."

That's not even broadly true among other law professors, much less among all knowledgeable observers.

"Highly controversial" is accurate, and indeed essential to any fair characterization of Bell even by those who also respect or admire him. I neither respect nor admire him, and I formed that opinion during the preceding millennium, long before I'd ever heard of Barack Obama.

That said, yes, the video is a complete dud. Even if it was deliberately selected as the obviously least effective in what's planned to be a series of increasingly powerful videos between now and November, I question whether it was worth the effort of releasing it by itself.

And then Ace backs that up very credibly with an example of someone who doesn't use bad words at all, but says that Fluke was wrong and lying, which she was.

As for the comments there. I understand that they aren't for the faint of heart. Lucky for me, I don't have a faint heart. The ladies who hang out there give as good as they get and there isn't a wilting violet among them. Nor is there any lack of respect for *women* who aren't complete tools, such as Fluke, who is a complete tool. I wouldn't hang out in a place where I wasn't respected. It's an entertaining environment for someone who doesn't have her feminist panties in a twist.

If Derrick Bell thought the criminal justice system was irredeemably corrupt from inception, White dominated and Black oppressed due to racism, at least it is not hard to imagine why. And to see what simple error lies at the heart of his views.

He makes the common mistake of seeing definite causation, where there is only definite correlation, and only possible causation. And that asserted causation is easily undercut by basic reason and other equally or more viable explanations.

Seeing an over-abundance of Blacks in the criminal justice system (legit correlation), he assumes it must be because they are Black (illegit causation).

Rather, it is entirely possible some other factor (than Race) accounts for the disproportionate representation. For example, a disproportionate commission of crimes, would be a better 'cause'. That should be easily enough checked.
And if not that, there are other plausible possible causes.

My only point: the correlation he notices is fine. The causation he asserts is of weak foundation, and is certainly not anywhere near self-evident, as the theory's 'attitude' would sometimes suggest.

This was not an earth shaking video-they will have to have more to really make a difference. But BO was a huge fan of Bell who was basically a race hustler with a better vocabulary than Jackson or Sharpton.

People,

Please leave "Love" alone.

He's a racist, and as such we should pity him for his bigoted beliefs.

There is no hope for changing the opinion of one whose views on race are as warped as his.

My goodness, the point is that Obama was never vetted by the crack MSM, those same good folks who tried to throughly vet Gov, Palin, sending sqads of reporters up to Alaska to dig through the snow covered mound of stuff lying there waiting to be discovered. Ah yes, that was vetting of a kind. So, what about Candidate Obama, other than the acknowledgement that he made the legs tingle of some MSM folks. That was it! Fairly unbalnced that!

Did Love ever provide evidence?

I'm betting no.

Bigoted and misogynistic

My wife and, well, any woman I work with would be amazed to learn that.

Outside of calling out your idiocy, where, exactly, is the racism and misogyny?

I mean, with you, it's because you treat blacks like second class citizens constantly.

That's your opinion, dickhead.

I'm deeply offended that you resort to such language.

You should try and make a better argument rather than getting hostile when people notice you are terrible at this.

SPLC is a sad, sad joke.

Hate groups stayed at record levels — almost 1,000 — despite the total collapse of the second largest neo-Nazi group in America.

I bet you can point to an increase in white on black hate crimes...oh wait, you can't.

See, if you could --- you would have done so without me noting it.

There are one hell of a lot more white individuals and organizations that fit the hate group bill:

...and I bet white on black crime stats back this up...oh, wait, it doesn't.

That'show I'll refer to you little boys from now on..."The Dunce Brothers"

When two people are beclowning you so thoroughly, drawing more attention to it is a poor plan.

You're right, but playing with little minds is sooooooooooooooo much FUN!!

True. It is the only reason anybody deals with you in the first place.

Actually I mentioned bigotry, racism and misogyny...there's that reading comprehension thingi rearing its ugly head.

I read the comments. The ones you quoted weren't there. Can you provide the numbers of these alleged comments? All of Ace's comments are numbered, so it should not be a problem.

Gosh...can we assume you have plenty of statistics to back that one up?

The lack of stats demonstrating it tend to be proof.

White hate groups that do not beat or rob minorities?

What would be the point of such a group?

The FBI keeps tabs on hate crimes based on race. Can you provide the stats to back up this rise in hate crimes by whites against blacks? I'm not seeing it in the numbers, but hey, maybe you can whip something up.
