Nigel Tufnel will be thrilled.
Some people are easily excited.PS At a certain insurance company, it was the date used as a placeholder in certain applications. I'd love to know how big the project was to write a workaround.
5 days later you have Anthony Weiner in Corduroy.
bag, you are too bad.
Numerology! It has been a long wait since 7/7/77. Now that was a great day.
It'd really suck to die on Thursday and just miss it.
Didn't the Mayans predict everyone would make noise when they walk on Friday?
Cordoroy is important because it represents a badge of super-intelligence among ultra-liberal English writers and academics -- especially those employed at The Guardian.wv: wotnot or notwot
Let's not forget that 11/11/11 is also Veterans' Day!Thanks to all those who have served and are serving.
"Why am I so excited about 11/11/11? Friday marks The Date That Most Resembles Corduroy. I'm so excited I just can't contain myself."The waiting drove me mad... You're finally here and I'm a mess. I take your entrance back -Can't let you roam inside my head.CorduroyThe waiting drove me mad... You're finally here and I'm a mess. I take your entrance back -Can't let you roam inside my head.I don't want to take what you can giveI would rather starve than eat your bread. I would rather run but I can't walk Guess I'll lie alone just like before. I'll take the varmint's pathOh and I must refuse your test A-push me and I will resistThis behavior's not unique. I don't want to hear from those who know They can buy, but can't put on my clothes. I don't want to limp for them to walk Never would have known of me before.I don't want to be held in your debt.I'll pay it off in blood, let I be wed I'm already cut up and half dead I'll end up alone like I began.Everything has chains, absolutely nothing's changed. Take my hand, not my picture, spilled my tincture. I don't want to take what you can giveI would rather starve than eat your breast All the things that others want for me Can't buy what I want because it's free Can't buy what I want because it's freeCan't be what you want because I'm... I ain't s'posed to be just fun Oh, to live and die, let it be done. I figure I'll be damned - all alone like I began... It's your move now... I thought you were a friend, but I guess I, I guess I hate you...
For 11/11/11 this old bit seems appropriate:In Flanders fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses, row on row,That mark our place; and in the skyThe larks, still bravely singing, flyScarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,Loved and were loved, and now we lieIn Flanders fields.Take up our quarrel with the foe:To you from failing hands we throwThe torch; be yours to hold it high.If ye break faith with us who dieWe shall not sleep, though poppies growIn Flanders fields.
That was a funny, interesting article until the Cain slam at the end.Seriously? In the Guardian? Also, please not the similarity in the depth of the commentary on Cain as there most often was for Palin. It's just *obvious* that he's a joke.Funny how incredibly successful people are so mock-worthy.I sent my first snarky e-mail back to the local Dem who keeps asking me for money. Oh, NOES! His last e-mail wailed... a Republican has entered the race and is going to BUY IT with his own money! So send me money! We must stop him from buying the election with HIS OWN money! So I sent back...YES! I will help you! We all know that Other People's Money is Moral Money! We must stop anyone using his Own Money! If CAIN had spent his life doing good works with Other People's Money, instead of making his Own Money, he wouldn't be a joke. And you know it's true.
Sadly, we missed the real excitement by 900 years.
11/11/1111 would still be abbreviated as 11/11/11 on all continents...
If you go way, way back, there was the first 11/11/11 without any abbreviations.
I owned a brown corduroy 3 piece suit in high school...there is a picture of me wearing it in the yearbook....
Even better, the slash and the dash hadn't been invented back then. It was all 111111 all the time!
Of course it's really 11/11/11/11/ this time--the eleventh hour of the eleventh month of the eleventh day of the eleventh year..Veteran's day...or "Armistice Day" commemorating the end of WW I as it was originally known and as I grew up until it was changed in 1954 when I was in the 4th grade..
@GahrieYou too?!On a more serious note, with halloween just passed, and the short days of autumn stealing on us, now is the time for uncomfortable subjects. This past year, we have had a growing problem with flash mobs. Not the kind that does impromptu dance numbers either, but real mobs. Of teenagers. Committing crimes. And here's where it gets nasty, black teenagers.I try to follow the news for any indicators of societal breakdowns so I can project into the future and try to protect my family. There had been outbreaks of violence for years obviously, but this year a trend developed of black youths swarming businesses, and victims.I believe that with the passing of the more exuberant holidays such violence will de-escalate into just neighborhood mobbings. But it will re-emerge come summertime, and be even more viscious and shocking.Growing up in the 60's we were taught that there were no differences between the races, and I truly still believe that is so. I believed that liberal progressive policies were the cause of violent anti-social behavior. But I am starting to wonder. But where do I turn now? Cities like Chicago, Birmingham, Washington DC, and Detroit are turning into free fire zones, even with their draconian gun laws. Their rampant liberal policies have left their citizens unable, and or unwilling to protect themselves.Cities like Austen, Seattle. and Boulder are just as progressive, yet they don't have the same problem with crime. Why?Surely not economics. Washington is booming under Liberal Democrats and Rino Republicans. Maybe its parenting? Daniel Moynahan had his study in the 60's about the lack of father figures in black households. White demographics are approaching if not surpassing those numbers now but we don't see a equal rise in crime rates. In fact nationally, crime rates are falling.Except in 1 demographic. The "hiphop" culture is consumed by mostly white teenagers, so that lets out media indoctrination. What possesses someone into believing a game called "knock out king" is a good thing? Or that pulling fair goers out of their cars and beating them just because their skin color is different, is fun?I've opened myself up to charges of racism. Hell I've been called worse by better people, so please, someone, tell me where I am wrong.
CarnifexI hear you. Personal protection and for that of your family will be important moving forward. Jackbooted fascist government types also factor in with the MO of the hiphop types - both are after your personal property, truth be told.Maintain your standards and keep your head up. Be generous, help your neighbor(s) when called upon, and pray for the survival of our country.
This topic reminded me of one of Henry Raddick's hilarious reviews at Amazon.com. This is his review of Bigotry (Issues in Focus) by Kathlyn Gay:"With my Uncle Sandy's intemperate public outbursts becoming more and more needlessly graphic, I bought this book to help him address his homophobia. But it's a sad day when a supposedly intelligent 74 year old man dismisses a book as worthless solely on the strength of the author's name. I told him not to judge a book from its cover, but that's hardly an argument to persuade a man who to this day refuses even to shake hands with a man if he is wearing corduroy. "
The ancestor through whom I trace my Native American ancestry was a Cordray, descended I am told from an Earl of Corduroy, who invaded England with William the Conqueror in 1066.
re: virgil xenophon --Yes, Remembrance Day was my immediate thought too. Never such innocence, never before or since, as changed itself to past without a word, and all that.
Will my thighs make that funny brrrrp-brrrrp sound when I walk?
The significant thing about the date is it's the last binary date of our lifetimes, if you exclude the "20" in the year. We have had a lot of them over the past 2 years, but Friday marks the very last one. We can tell our grandkids about where we were this day...
Not a good day for fat chicks.
Curious, you just created a hostile commentary envionment for fat people.
I can't help but snark that the Guardian could use a bit of moral corduroy to navigate the cultural swamp into which they have descended.
@CraigAh...but do you know the "real" story? The Norman invasion was planned as a sneak attack, but the Earl of Cor du Roi kitted out his men in pants of a sturdy new fabric that set up such a din as they marched to bivouac at Hastings that Harold's sentries were alerted and the element of surprise was lost.History also claims that after King Harold was slain the Saxons fled in terror from the Norman horsemen, but in fact it was the supernatural wail of thousands of pairs of velours côtelé knee britches.Ironically, centuries later the Brits would fuel the Industrial Revolution and found a mighty empire on the manufacture of textiles, among the most well known is Manchester cloth= corduroy.
