Amazon won't ship the pepper spray to Wisconsin.

State law.

Hell no - do I look/sound like Pavlov's dog?

I like the idea of buying pepper spray for Christmas, though:

For what it is worth, I have never gone shopping on 'Black Friday' in all my 24 years in this country. When I want to 'gift' people I give them money, usually in units of $1000. Only one has really, really appreciated that until now. It is really a heartening story. I gave a check to my cousin, aunt's son on Dad's side when he was building a house -- all this back home. He wanted to make sure it was a gift and not a loan -- I said yeah, it is a gift in my dad's name. He took it and then I flew back here. I call my mom and she is all so happy -- she didn't know I gave him that check. The cousin took it to the bank to deposit it and was floored when he found out how much it was. He calls my mom all flabbergasted and tells her to tell me he is forever grateful -- sounds more poignant if I repeated his words. On one of my trips next time, he took me to his house and happily showed me what he had done with that money. My dad would be proud of us both.

Nope. Not shopping. We were at the northern end of the Texas drought and our harvest was about 30% of usual. We'll be doing well to keep the lights on all winter, but at least the shed's full of wood and the basement's full of vegetables ... so we'll be fine.

It helps a lot to understand what Christmas is really about, and there's a lot for which to be thankful in any case, most notably our 9-month-old daughter napping in the other room.

The baubles and gee-gaws are quickly cast aside, soon to be forgot. To have a little daughter who begins most days with a chuckle, and for whom we tried 15 years -- you can't possibly buy that.

Not today. Not ever.

But WAIT.....there's more!!! If you buy today..... operators are standing by!!!!

Geeze you sound like Billy Mays.

We don't really exchange gifts much with each other or buy things for other people. It isn't what Christmas is about.

Other than some household items that we buy for ourselves, (I want a pasta making attachment for my Kitchen Aid mixer and a flat screen for the bedroom), which we might buy the week before Christmas or after the first of the year ......I make the gifts that I want to give.

This year we are giving baskets with 4 oz jars of home made jams, jelly and sauces. Candy. Knitted vests, hats, fingerless gauntlets for some family members. And as already mentioned money or gift cards so they can buy what they want.

When I worked for the IRS about 20 years ago, you had to reserve Black Friday off on the Monday after the previous year's Thanksgiving.

It was the best day of the year to work, no managers, nobody to bug you, and you actually got a lot of stuff done.

Love it - "competitive shopping".

An event in next year's Olympics.

Like for example, the Kindle fire, which I'm using right now outside a coffee shop on a beautiful sunny morning in Las Vegas. It's a cool time to be alive.

Now this is a man (or woman) who understands something.

BRAVO!!!!

A little patience and you can pick up even deeper discount bargains in the run-up to Christmas when retailers get really really REALLY desperate.

Thank you, Crack.

I see that Holder's people ran amok in several stores on Black Friday. In another lead story dog bites man.

My husband's cousin is addicted to black Friday sales. She buys all manner of things and happily gives them out as gifts to various people, including me. Nice sentiments and I appreciate that but hate her gifts. I am not much into trinkets and don't like my house cluttered -- so they sit in some closet. Waste of money, no? How do you tell her that without seeming rude?

Remember when the big sale days were after Christmas, and before Christmas everything was expensive? The shopping tip was to shop really early, like in the summer, so you could get some decent deals.

I went to walmart last night because my cousin wanted the 19 dollar printer. It was nuts. They put pallets in the aisle and at midnight let people just tear into the pallets. When midnight hit you could hear crazy screaming from that side of the store. It's no wonder it's always walmart that has incidents. Target was far more civilized. That said, I enjoy the hustle and bussle of black Friday.

My walmart purchase wasan ice scraper for my car :)

Now I'm watching football. Crap lsu just scored!!!

@Shanna: why did a scene from The Walking Dead pop into my head while reading your post?

I purchased 2 thermal undershirts for my husband at WalMart today because it's very cold where he works. Also, 2 bags of candy.

I've never been shopping on black Friday. Except on the internet.

I need to buy my wife a Kindle Fire for Christmas. I'll buy it through the Althouse portal soon. I want to do a bit more research first

I did buy an anniversary present for my husband through the links here.

I always go grocery shopping early in the morning. I was about to leave this morning when I saw something that reminded me that it was Black Friday. Close call.
